Ringan: like a drum circle of arts By Sanjay Pendse
T
he rains and polls may be hard to predict in the city, but you can now safely predict some rich cultural osmosis to happen on the second weekend of every month. Celebrated theatre group Aasakta Kalamanch has catalysed Ringan, a new monthly multidisciplinary art event at the SuDarshan intimate theatre space in Shaniwar Peth. Ringan, which literally means a ring or circle, got off to an admirable start with the reading of three of DB Mokashi’s short stories by actor Jeetendra ‘Jeetu’ Joshi last Saturday. Award-winning actor Atul Kulkarni and actor-screenwriter Chinmay Kelkar followed this up on the next day by reading, what in Kulkarni’s own words is, his “loose adaptation” of Raymond Smullyan’s dialogue-essay: ‘Is God a Taoist?’ Over two evenings, a full house of primarily young, and paying listeners lapped up Marathi literary fare in rapt attention. Which is noteworthy at a time when attention spans threaten to shrink to 144 characters, and question marks loom large over regional language literacy among “sons-anddaughters-of-the-soil”. Enthused by the response, Aasakta reveals some of its plans for Ringan. “We have planned readings of

Which is not to say it will the fare will be restricted to reading out prose and poetry. “Soon we will also come up with a masterclass each month to engage with all disciplines of art and the artists with “Why they do what they Theatre do and how they do what talk they do” approach. This would include theatre, music, dance, visual art and the interdisciplinary work. Having created a major impact on the national theatre scene with a string of top awards, Aasakta has envisaged Ringan as its continuous engagement program with the audiences. “In the last decade of our work, we have been able to create Up prose and personal: Actor ‘Jeetu’ Joshi rehearses for the book reading. and engage with new and existing theatre audiences,” says Mehta, adding that Ringan is a way to of the time coming together. discerning groups in the city are understand audiences, and bolster In Pune, Srishti tried to present creating such informal spaces to up audience numbers, while a live cultural periodical in the…and generate learning experiences for keeping the art honest. nearer home and nearer to our time, their wards through story tellings, Ringan has had interesting Open Space created a cross-cultural book-readings, workshops, and resonances in the recent and long intimiate audience space for “bookstory telling sessions. past. tasting” sessions, documentary With Aasakta’s consistent Rangayan, the iconic parallel screenings and live performances. theatre record, one can expect theatre movement in Mumbai of Gyaan Adab has recently opened Ringan to be a cultural watering the 1960s, started as a confluence of up a similar space in Kalyaninagar. hole for a long time. Jeetu Joshi who originally burst on to stage with light comedies and farce was a revelation for many as a reader of literature. “Fed on a sumptuous diet of PL Deshpande and GA Kulkarni, Mokashi was my coming of age writer. For the 19th century, he was so rebellious in a quiet and real way. Incredibly simple and evocative prose mark his work for me,” says Joshi, who matched every twist in Mokashi’s tale, with subtle use of tone, pauses, and overtures. I’m too new to develop an attitude: Kriti Sanon By Subhash K Jha
T
wo films old, actress Kriti Sanon is baffled at stories that she has developed an attitude following the success of her debut Hindi film Heropanti. She says she hasn’t “achieved nothing to be arrogant about”. Could the fact that she has signed a film Singh Is Bling with Akshay Kumar have something to do with this? Kriti defended herself: “How can I throw attitude? I am just two films old, one in Hindi the other in Telugu. Of course, my Hindi film Heropanti has become a much bigger success than anyone ever imagined. But that doesn’t mean I’ve started thinking I’ve arrived.” “I am just a beginner. The two
films so far are baby steps. If I develop an attitude, I’ll be finished even before I’ve started. Besides, if I started misbehaving, my folks would give me a tight slap.” The “change” in attitude, she believes, comes from people’s change of expectations. “If I’m Baby slightly busier steps in now, I am B town accused of changing. It’s sad to be constantly judged for every move y o u make after your first success. If you wear your hair differently, you have changed.” “If you request for a little time to fulfil a commitment, you’re accused of being arrogant. I repeat,
I’ve achieved nothing to be arrogant about,” she said. Kriti says her time between
the release of Heropanti and the shooting of a second untitled Telugu film was taken up on social networking in Bollywood. “Unlike star kids whom everyone knows by first name in the movie industry, no one new who I was. Being an outsider, I had to literally introduce myself everywhere. I met individual producers, told them about myself, like any individual job-holder. Luckily, for me, my first producer Sajid Nadiadwala treats both Tiger Shroff and me like his kids. He’s very protective.” Kriti has a three-film deal with Nadiadwala. “But it isn’t a binding deal. I’m free to work in outside production.” She is already doing her second Telugu film opposite Naga Chaitanya. Kriti’s first Telugu film
1: Nenokkadine was an average runner. “Though it starred the the Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu, it was something unexpected for his fans,” she says. As for the resounding success of Heropanti, Kriti is over the moon. “While we were shooting we knew we were making a good film. But it was only after the first trailer came out that we realised we were sitting on a potential blockbuster.” Having done two Telugu films, without knowing how to speak a word in that language, Kriti is open to offers from the South. “But only if something really good comes up. I signed both my Telugu films before the release of Heropanti. Now my priority is a career in Mumbai,” she added.

It is an endearing ‘roam’ com Film: Amit Sahni Ki List Cast: Vir Das, Vega Tomatia, Anindita Nayar and Kavi Shastri Director: Ajay Bhuyan

S
urprises, they say, come in small packages. I went into this odd-sounding film, Amit Sahni Ki List, honestly, with zero expectations. I came out pleasantly surprised, bathed in the scent of an ambrosial rom-com filled with endearing nooks and corners secreting a kind of cosmic view of a man-woman relationship that affords both humour and sadness. The rom-com as genre is perpetually misunderstood and misinterpreted in Bollywood. Not this time. Okay, so what’s the list about? It’s a to-do thingy prepared by our everyman-hero, a regular highincome guy on Facebook, played by the very engaging Vir Das. Amit has put together a list (yes, an actual handwritten list) of the qualities that he wants in his soul-mate. Life of course has other plans. Before he meets his Dream Woman (or DW, as Amit’s acronym-obsessed mom would say), he runs into the adventurous bohemian dog-loving bungee-jumping Mala (Vega Tamotia). Their courtship is done with a colourful candour that is not blindingly romantic. The couple
sing, dance, run across fields... but with a warning signal playing somewhere invisibly saying, “Babe, bumps ahead”. It would be unfair to give away the goings-on in the second movement of this very engaging rom-com. Suffice it to say that the dips and curves in the narrative all add up to an experience that leaves us smiling and sometimes chuckling. Amit Sahni Ki List is not a great TGS Rating piece of cinema. It doesn’t oosd aspire to have any lofty heights of tragic romanticism (a la Ek Villain). Nor does it, thankfully, converge on a neo-classic film of the past to derive its romantic imagery (a la Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania). It is what it is. An uncluttered, elegantly narrated rom-com about rom-com landscape (a territory an inherently flawed hero, so surprisingly liberated of vulgarity), confused about his aspirations as he gets some solid support from a romantic entity that he ends up the supporting cast, especially wallowing in the kind of giddy Kavi Shastri who is terrific as Vir’s romanticism that he probably jockey-buddy (langotiya yaar). Just enjoy Amit Sahni’s journey from a romantic heretic to a helpless believer in true love para-gliding into Chattisgarh to win over his lost sweetheart (a bit of Mani Ratnam’s Saathiya here). The journey is peppered with funny exchanges and smart swipes at contemporary sexual mores. Watch him in that sequence where he runs into his former girlfriend, now pregnant. As she tells him why she dumped him, Vir’s face registers a deep embarrassment. Luckily the film never needs to run into any mortifying roadblocks. It’s a smooth ride all the way. Scary bits get repetitive Film: Pizza 3D Cast: Akshay Oberoi, Parvathy Omanakuttan, Dipannita Sharma and Arunoday Singh Director: Akshay Akkineni

W
hen Karthik Subbaraj’s Pizza hit theaters in 2012 a ton of people on Twitter urged me to watch it. I had my doubts about its quality seeing as a lot of people had also recommended Singham 2 earlier. The horror geek in me eventually dragged myself to the nearest theater, and I wasn’t in the least bit disappointed. Pizza was a lean, entertaining, fun horror movie stripped off the commercial trappings of Tamil cinema and free of the froth that surrounds star vehicles. Most
importantly, unlike attempts like Ragini MMS 2, this was a movie made by a bunch of people who truly love and understand horror films. With its tiny budget, an original take on the haunted house genre and box office success, it was only a matter of time until Bollywood sniffed an opportunity to cash in on Pizza. And with Pizza 3D, they go the whole hog by throwing in 3D. The bad news is, for those who’ve seen the original, Pizza 3D feels like a pointless remake. Those who have never heard of or seen Subbaraj’s film, however, might have a good time watching this movie. Sure, a faithful remake also needs hard work and the idea of not fixing what isn’t broken is a fair excuse to rehash the original scene by scene, but there’s no escaping the pointlessness of it all. For Pizza 3D’s
core audience of horror film junkies, it adds up to a fatal problem - when you know when the jump scares are going to pop up and what they are, it’s difficult to be scared or thrilled. While Pizza was a TGS Rating good film, the scares in it weren’t exactly ood pathbreaking. In fact, they were the opposite: they were clichéd. hat started as a simple milkshake with a dollop of ice-cream is now one of Pune’s most favourite drinks. It’s what everyone will try out when they visit Pune. Sujata Mastani is the brand that put Mastani on Pune’s food map in 1966. The drink involves an all-natural base of milk, cream, organic pulp and fresh fruits or dry fruits. Over the years, the original flavours of mango, pista, rose, chocolate and keshar have expanded to 20 different flavours including cookies and cream and anjir. To give a classic a new twist, TGS Life asked city chefs to give their own spin to the drink and here’s what they came up with. ITALIAN TWIST Inventor: Chef Prasad Metrani, Chef de Cuisine of The Westin Pune Koregaon Park Thought process: Mastani is a famous dessert drink and though I have been living in Maharashtra for many years, I have not tasted it anywhere but in Pune. I got my first taste at Sujata Mastani in Sadashiv Peth last year. I had chosen the dry fruit one. It is a refreshing drink which got me thinking about different flavour pairings and culinary infusions. My version has traditional and basic flavours of Middle Eastern ingredients, Italian inspiration and some Indian flavours. Fresh herbs, spices, fruit puree have been brought together. I chose the ingredients keeping in mind the vibrancy of

Its USP is the clever interior packaging that squeezes out every inch of space for passengers and to that extent, the dashboard is pushed up against the front bulkhead and the seats are slim. The second row of seats slide fore and aft and split 60:40; it’ll even tumble out of the way at the pull of a lever. The all-important third row flips forward and splits 50:50 and, even with all three rows up, there’s enough boot space for three largish soft bags. Then there’s the styling. It’s all cuts and creases, a healthy dollop of chrome, an edgy chin and a smart backside that help it stand out against the Ertiga’s conservative lines. The Mobilio is, surprisingly, fun to drive and it starts with the way both engines (borrowed from the City but with altered gearbox ratios) respond to the throttle while being adequately powerful to lug around the weight of the joint Indian family and its dog. I have a go in the 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol first. The action starts at 1800rpm; if you want instant progress below that you will need a downshift. The mid-range is strong and if you keep your foot planted, the engine will pull cleanly and quite strongly to a buzzy 7000rpm. Gearshifts are typical Honda in crispness and accuracy and the Mobilio petrol will do serious triple-digit speeds when pushed. The 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel, again borrowed from the City, is very responsive too. There’s little lag (important when you have the weight of seven people to move around) and it is a
happy cruiser – 120kmph is easily maintained. This engine gives its best in the mid-range though and that’s where you should aim to keep it spinning. The engine is quite audible under hard acceleration and at idle, but, on the whole, it is more refined than the City and the Amaze. For now, both diesel and petrol are available only with a five-speed manual. On the move, the Mobilio grips and goes around corners in a very un-MUV like way – there’s not much body roll, the steering weights up well and the handling is predictable at all times. Over broken bits of this road, the diesel feels a bit firm, the petrol a bit less so. Overall though, the Mobilio’s MacPherson front suspension and and it leaves you feeling short-changed after the torsion beam rear axle find a nice balance drama of the exteriors. And, while I’m at it, the between high-speed stability and seats are a bit flat, the seat cushions are keeping occupants comfortable. firm and the third row is placed low Verdict What’s really nice is that it is so you sit slightly knees up. THRILL OF DRIVING
PHOTOGRAPHY: VIKRANT DATE
Better to drive with a new engine, new transmission, updated platform, better interiors and significant quality updates – this is the complete overhaul that the Indica has been crying out for, says Sirish Chandran
Zesty! I
t’s easy to forget that the original Indica marked a significant milestone for motoring in India – the first indigenously designed hatchback, the first with the ‘space of an Ambassador within the footprint of a Zen’, the first to have a boot (and estate) slapped on to a hatch (the Indigo/Marina), the first to shave the boot to create the uniquely Indian sub four-metre compact sedan. Tata Motors’ engineers always knew what Indians wanted, but they struggled to do it with as much finesse or put enough resources behind it as global players. This, then, is the all-new Indica, except it is not called the Indica, Tata Motors preferring to bury the past and begin its new innings with a clean slate. It does have a family resemblance but that was deliberate. Overall, the styling is more modern and confident and those ungainly wheelarch gaps have been done away with. There are three new signature elements – the smiley grille that has now become the ‘humanity line’ (the lines above and below the grille that stretch into the headlamps) that supposedly reflect the trust and humane approach of the Tata group of companies; the ‘slingshot line’ at the rear that starts at the T logo and stretches to the front to give dynamism to the three-quarter profile; and the ‘diamond DLO’ which is the profile of the window line. What will be of more interest to you is that the boot is neatly integrated within four metres without looking like too much of an after thought. More significant are the updates to the interior with a completely new cabin that has dual-tone colours, piano black surround for the centre console and a neatly integrated infotainment screen. The dials have moved back to behind the steering wheel while
Clockwise from above: Zest retains Indica family resemblance but it’s all brought bang up to date. Speedo and tacho moved back to behind the steering wheel. Revotron 1.2-litre turbo petrol delivers 88.8bhp and 140Nm of torque in Sport mode. Boot neatly integrated within four metres to avail of excise duty breaks
the steering wheel itself is now a smaller 360mm in diameter. Space inside the cabin is fantastic – best in class both in roominess and comfort. The infotainment system developed by Harman is almost as feature-rich as BMW’s iDrive or Audi’s MMI and features everything: Bluetooth audio streaming, parking sensors, voice control for audio tracks and air con temperature, audio readout for text messages and you can even reject Specification: calls with an SMS. The gloss of the racing season is the betting, the gambling and the flamboyant fashion, but behind it is a well-oiled machinery that looks after the horses that are the focus of the whole activity. Barnalee Handique meets some of the individuals who have been working round-the-clock to prep the horses for this season
The Men & Women
behind the horse FAISAL ABBAS, STABLE OWNER Faisal Abbas has been in the business of training horses for 14 years. Presently in his stable he has 67 horses belonging to various stud farms such as Poonwalla’s, Ruia, Shapoor and others. Reveals Faisal,“ Taking responsibility of so many horses at the same time is not a joke. As a stable owner, it is important to understand the equine psychology. Horses are proud, noble and emotional creatures. In order to get the best out of your horse, you need to communicate with it apart from giving it the best home and food you can. We observe the horses keenly during their resting, training and eating periods and often identify a problem, if any, as soon as it develops. It’s like looking after a child.” There have been many occasions when Abbas has been able to spot a winner from the group of horses. He reveals, “When you watch the horses working out, you have a gut instinct that one horse will be special or that he is in a really good form. A trained eye can spot by the way he moves, his attitude… some horses have the will to win and you can sense that he will have a good chance.” Every trainer has got a different set-up but the fundamentals are the same. “The horses come to our stables when they are two years old. They are trained to be able to race by October. Horses are moody and they need a lot of time to settle down and acclimatize to a new environment. GOVIND RAI, MASSAEUR & VILAS SATHE, FARRIER We met Govind Rai, the groom, masseur and Man Friday where horses are concerned. He feeds, grooms, exercises and massages the horses. “Massages help maintain muscle tone. Kneading relieves them of tensions and knots, increases strength, endurance and agility,”
Behind the turf
he reveals. Rai has been in this profession for 17 years. He is in charge of two horses. Usually, when the horses come in, they take time to adjust to a new groom and stables. Rai says,“They are like humans with their own likes and dislikes, and acceptance is very important. With the each passing day, the horse understands my voice and touch, and the bond strengthens between us.” Vilas Sathe, the farrier, was trimming the hooves of a horse. Using rasps and nippers he cuts away the hoof material. This procedure is an important part of hoof care because it helps maintain balance by helping even weight distribution. It also helps maintain hygiene as the animals are confined and walk over their faeces and urine. Shoeing a horse improves its gait and to helps it gain traction. DR LEILA FERNANDEZ, PHYSIOTHERAPIST & ACUPUNCTURIST Like athletes, horses need constant attention and have to be monitored. Like humans, horses too have regular issues such as neck and back pain, modular issues, limpness and so on. If the pain persists and the muscle gets stressed, it may spasm. Leila checks the various pressure points in the horses to see if they are fine. If a horse is suffering from back pain or limps, tests are conducted to diagnose the problem. If it is a crude line problem, she tries to resolve it. If it is not a bone but a muscular issue than physiotherapy with ultrasound is suggested. “Otherwise, adjunct to physiotherapy, acupuncture is also needed. It helps relax the muscles and reduce pain. It is a supplementary method of treatment which can be used along with medicine, diet and rest,” says Leila, who has trained in the US and has been working since 1995. Acupuncture helps relax muscles. The needles used are longer and though meridians are the same, pressure points are different.

“Since I have been working with the horses for some time, they are very familiar with my touch and voice. For horses which are high strung, I calm them and spend some time with them till they are ready to accept my presence. During the procedure the horses are usually calm as the process is painless and last only for 45 mins,” she says. DR AKRUTI CHOKSI, EQUINE DENTIST Animal dentistry is a specialisation. An equine dentist has an equally important role to play in this industry. Akruti Choksi is a specialist in this particular field and is also the first Indian member of the International Association of Equine Dentistry. Horses usually have delicate teeth and the most recurrent problem they have is dental fractures. It is because the bit, the part that goes into the horse’s mouth cause problems if the teeth are overgrown. This irritates the horse and makes it uneasy. Another issue is that horse’s teeth keeps growing and need to be filed to be kept in check. While filing

the dental balance and the natural shape of the horse’s teeth should be kept in mind, so that they wouldn’t have problem chewing. The instruments used in equine dentistry is similar to humans, but larger in size. In nature, grazing for 16-20 hours keeps the horse’s teeth levelled. DR ANIL KUMAR, VETERINARIAN Anil Kumar, the veterinarian, has been busy since the horses from nearby states started coming in. That was two month’s ago! The most common problems that horses face are difficulties in adapting to the environment, underfoot conditions, fever and sores. Presently, he has 1400 horses under his care. The race course has one of the best hospitals in the country. It is equipped with the latest instruments, has an operation room and recovery room, ultra sound and scanning unit. Number of surgeries like knee, throat, arthroscopic, trachea are performed here. There is also provision of collecting stem cells for future regeneration of that particular breed. barnalee.handique@goldensparrow.com

ctors have a power that many might envy — the power of essaying varied, even atypical characters and then returning to their normal lives. The problem however begins when the boundary line between reel and real life begins to blur. Meena Kumari, a legendary performer of roles of star-crossed and ultimately-doomed women, was a victim of this trend and that melancholy tinges her life — and poetry. “Shamaa hoon, phool hoon, ya ret pe qadmon ka nishaan/Aap ko haq hai mujhe jo bhi ji chahe keh le” is a couplet that uncannily echoes the crushed, social-conforming, desire-denied woman she played in countless tear-jerkers. Or even, “Ab yahaan kuch nahi sannata hi sannata hai/Dekh ke veerana log abh bhi yehi kehte hai/Kisi dulhan ka maqbarah hai yeh khandar to nahi!!!” Meena Kumari’s four-decade life was scarcely enviable — a childhood stunted by the need to work to support her family, a fairytale romance that ultimately
soured, lack of genuine love and support, a grievous and eventually fatal illness from heavy drinking and, on the other hand, being ruthlessly typecast onscreen as a quietly-suffering woman in thrall to a dominant male figure. Poetry was the only exercise of free self-expression for this intelligent and sensitive woman, who writing under the pen name “Naaz”, could fashion some imaginative and striking imagery or convey an endearing wistfulness, in
that queen of languages, Urdu. But then this was inaccessible to the majority, who only had recourse to some transliterations, occasional translations and, of course, the record “I Write, I Recite”, in which she performed some of her compositions, set to music by the evergreen Khayyam. Distinguished scholar Noorul Hasan has performed the signal service of bringing her poetry to a wider audience, translating nearly 50 of her works into English,
to popular culture, specially its Bollywood manifestation. This is brought out well in the nazm titled “Khaali Dukaan/The Empty Shop” with its wistfully expressed requirement of “Pyaar ka ek khoobsurat khwab...”, and “Mohabbat ka ek purtapak lamha...” but “Bas inhi ek do cheezon ki main khareedar thi/Aur waqt ki dukaan in cheezon se khaali hai”. The translation - “I came looking for nothing but these/And the shop of Time/Supplies none of these things” - faithfully reproduces the rhythm. This is not a compilation of her entire work but a representative selection Book displaying the refined review while also sensibility she could providing a achieve in verse too.
