ressed in a white flowy blouse and blue denims, actor-director-writer Radhika Chaudhari is amazed at how much Pune has changed in the past three years. That’s when she was last here, to promote her short film Orange Blossom. It won the Silver Ace Award for Best Short Film at the Las Vegas Film Festival 2014. “I just can’t believe this is the same city in which I would ride around on my Kinetic bike,” she says. “This place never fails to surprise me and I can’t recognise a single spot here. I studied here and moved to LA a decade ago only to return in 2011. Now I am back to talk about my next short film A Family of Clowns, written by American author Daniel Wallace.” Radhika completed her masters in mass communication from the Pune University and has been a part of over 30 films in various languag-

es. In India, she acted in Tere Naam and Khushi. Radhika came across the story of A Family of Clowns in a magazine. “I could visualise a film while reading the story. I impulsively sent an e-mail to Daniel about wanting to turn it into a film and he replied positively. He did not charge me a penny as royalty and readily agreed to write the screenplay too,” she says. The film has been selected in five film festivals in the US namely, 4th annual New York International film Festival, 9th annual Central Florida Film Festival, 16th annual Indie Memphis Film Festival and the 4th annual Catalina Film Festival. Radhika is a visual thinker and draws inspiration from films and real life. “I visualise a lot and prefer meeting people and watching films over reading,” she says. “I admire Daniel’s work and recently read his ‘Kings & Queens’. I am also currently working on my first feature film Pandora with Kunal Rajan. It will be directed by Charles Oliver [who in the last has done Sons of Perdition and Take].” Besides doing all this, Radhika is also setting an example at home. Her eight-year-old daughter Gia is also keen on directing. “Her teacher told me that she is a fabulous writer and recently directed a play on one of her field trips. I would be more than happy if she joined the industry,” she says. anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

When music and visual art meet Pune based classical vocalist Priyadarshini Kulkarni revolutionises the presentation of an ancient art form By Barnalee Handique @barnalee

P

riyadarshini Kulkarni is an innovative Hindustani classical vocalist from the city who fuses two art forms simultaneously — music and miniature paintings. Talking about her unique performances, Priyadarshini says, “Art forms borrow from each other; there is interdependence between them. They are attached to human life. The miniature paintings are illustrations of puthis or scriptures. In the same way, paintings have been inspired by classical ragas which are a medium of expression.” Priyadarshini has performed at the Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal, ICCR (Indian Council for Cultural Relations) in Delhi, at the Shri Shankarlal Music Festival in Gwalior, the Tansen Samaroh (is held right in front of Tansen’s tomb at Gwalior MP) and the Malharotsav (Malharotsav is the special event on Raga Malhar to celebrate the monsoon, held at Chandigarh) to name a few. Recently, she conceptualised and presented a series of episodes based on Indian classical

music for the Doordarshan national channel. Priyadarshini who belongs to the Jaipur Atrauli gharana of Hindustani classical music lives in Large Nagar area of Pune with her family. In her early years, she was trained by her mother who was an amateur singer. Pt Nathrao Neralkar of Aurangabad iniSound of tiated Priyadarshini in performance music oriented training. For specialised gharana music she received training from Pt Rajshekhar Mansur, the son of Pt Mallikarjun Mansur of Dharwad. In her concerts, the 47-year-old classical vocalist presents a theme and juxtaposes her recital with audio-visual images. For instance, if she is presenting Raga Malhar, it is accompanied by paintings, photographs and short film clips of the season. only when musicians think a little bit out of the “Different art forms such as paintings, music, box. She says, “Tradition will continue to flow iment without diluting the art form. It is im-

perative to understand the history of music and then think out of the box. And this is where she wishes younger musicians would channel their energy, instead of lifting tunes. Priyadarshini wants new age musicians to explore different art forms, fuse them together and compose something new. In her opinion, it is very difficult to retain the focus of the audience. “To make it interesting, the presentation should be changed and new elements should be incorporated. Artistes such as Zakir Hussain and Trilok Gurtu are doing great work, but the pioneer of this fusion effort of Pan dit Ravi Shankar.” Her first concert on the simultaneous presentation of two arts — ‘Abhivyakti an expression’ was staged in 2009 and had an audience of 5,000 at a youth festival at Powai. Later a number of concerts were held under the aegis of the ICCR and other prestigious platforms of art and cultural centers. Priyadarshini is also a founder and trustee of a cultural trust which works for the cause of music and traditional arts. barnalee.handique@goldensparrow.com

The shooting of the film had its share of ups and downs, which included the crew staying in engineering hostels and eating off farms. “I would not say we were troubled or had a difficult time,” says Mrunalini. “It was a learning experience. Devi Lal in Kick doesn’t enter the world of crime because of greed, but because he has a cause that is expected to make cherubs clap and angels weep with gratitude. In reality, it’s a little creepy but we’ll get to that later. There isn’t much by way of suspense in this film, but it does raise a few questions. Like, for instance, how much were the real actors in the cast paid for being in Kick ? If they’ve negotiated well, then this is what we hope acting in Kick has

Will the audience find anything creepy about the fact that Devi Lal feels a “kick” because a little girl, lying in bed, smiles at him? Only if they’ve read about Woody Allen. How does this girl end up in Devi Lal’s care? She has a “chest tumour” and because her parents can’t find the MONEY for her treatment, they leave her in a children’s home and jump off a building. How is getting orphaned supposed to help a sick little girl? Because their suicide note will waft to Devi Lal, naturally. So now this girl has the guilt of her parents’ suicides and a guardian who gets a “kick” when she smiles at him. If that doesn’t turn her into a violent psychopath, maybe she’ll grow up to star in the Indian remake of Kick Ass. But there are two wonderful, heartening and life-affirming things that one can take away from Kick. Early on in the film, you can see Khan being kicked on his bottom by Mithun Chakraborty. Unfortunately, we aren’t shown Chakraborty’s foot making contact, but the suggestion is plain and this is one illusion that we’ll gladly buy. More importantly, this is the last time we’ll see Salman Khan in a film in 2014. That gave us a kick. (By special arrangement with Firstpost.com)

A Nadiadwala film starring Khan isn’t expected to throw up surprise twists, which makes it easy to write a spoiler-free review of Kick because everyone knows who’s going to win the cop versus robber game, when the robber is played by Khan. Like Nawab Asia, many other restaurants dress their staff to suit the restaurant’s ambience. Joravar Sachdev, owner, 11 East Street Cafe, is meant to look like a London cafe. So waiters are dressed in a combination of black, red and white. Special uniforms take special care. At MealTango you can treat your guests to a traditional or speciality cuisine, or dine at a host’s who will whip up an authentic meal for you. Essentially, you can be a host or a guest. Founded by husband and wife Saket Khanna and Neeta Valecha, the site puts you in touch with other gourmands and then you can welcome them into your home, or get an invitation to theirs for a hearty meal. “When I first spoke to my neighbours,” says Saket, “and asked them if they would like to cook a meal for strangers, their instant reply was, ‘No way are we letting strangers into our homes!’ Thankfully, that changed and we have

The couple had to choose between the US and India to launch MealTango. “I am glad we decided to open shop in Pune because today the city has the maximum hosts and is doing better than most other cities. The idea was born in the UK when we realised that most of our friends wanted an authentic Indian meal. We started with hosting friends and travellers that we met on the Internet and then decided to launch MealTango. In six months, we have spread across 11 countries,” says Saket. Saket now has new-found respect for Indian Two to professionalism. “Someone suggested we should tango get undergraduatess on board and I am so happy I did. The energy, passion and ownership exhibited by them is brilliant,” says Saket. Another aspect that has worked for them is the Indian level of networking. “On a personal level, this has helped me develop a greater taste and love for food. The foodie population in India is massive and with initiative like this, we are moving to a whole new level,” he says. Interestingly, they haven’t spent a single penny on marketing or advertising. Publicity has been created only word-of-mouth. So, the next time you crave authentic food, don’t head to a restaurant. THRILL OF DRIVING

W

hen the VW Polo was launched back in 2009, it almost immediately came under criticism for its three-cylinder motors, both petrol and diesel. The rumbly, unrefined nature of the German motors was unexpected. Nevertheless, the impeccable handling manners of the hatch and the refreshing design language caught the fancy of buyers and the Polo did quite well on the sales charts. Now, Volkswagen has launched the 1.5-litre TDI diesel engine in the facelifted Polo and it has four cylinders! The new engine will hold an important place in VWs line-up, replacing the old 1.2-litre diesel as well as the range-topping 1.6 that’s seen in the Polo GT TDI and the Vento. We had expected just the higherspec Polos and Vento to receive this engine, but in hindsight, it makes perfect sense: the 1.5 attracts lower excise duty and by replacing the 1.2, reduces inventory for the company. VW has also priced the new models aggressively, effectively the same as the outgoing 1.2s. You get a bit more for your money this time round. The early Polos were also criticised for glaring omissions such as a lack of USB/aux connectivity and climate control. The new models come well-equipped and the cosmetic changes freshen up the car nicely. The headlamps have visible round reflectors inside, the front bumper has been tweaked, as have the fog lamps and the alloys are a new design. On the inside, there’s some silver trim on the centre console, a new flat-bottomed steering wheel and different seat fabric. That, and a striking new metallic orange colour option. Interestingly, we drove the new Polo just before the official launch in New Delhi and our information was that the new 1.5-litre engine would make the same power as the outgoing 1.6 TDI. But this engine felt very different. First impressions are that it revs much more lazily and there’s a more linear

Polo up

character to the power delivery. No kick in the pants when boost comes on. Once in a higher gear, cruising felt more or less the same as the old 1.6 and about as fast, but with some lack of crispness of overtakes. As we spent more time with the car, most of us agreed that this didn’t feel like a worthy replacement for the 1.6 GT. Thats because it isn’t. At the official launch, VW announced the complete Polo line-up, which indicated that the 1.5 we were driving was in fact an 89bhp/230Nm replacement for the old 1.2 TDI engine. The 1.5 TDI will indeed come in 103bhp/250Nm state of tune in the 2014 Polo GT TDI, but that will only make an appearance later this year at the same price as before. With our expectations thus reset, we can conclude that the new 1.5-litre diesel is in fact quite an improvement. You get one more cylinder, which makes the engine much smoother, though it’s still a bit noisy. It’s more linear even compared to the old 1.2, but again, slower to react. The rest of the car is evolutionary. VW have revised the suspension tuning of the Polo over time, so it doesn’t crash through bumps as much as before. Handling is still sweet and the steering is light as usual, though not as much as some of the competition. This is a good thing; it feels secure and comfortable at all speeds. Brake feel is also improved, which was another common complaint with past Polos, usually attributed to the quality of pads used. The updated diesel Polo then, is a better package than before. For approximately the same prices as the outgoing 1.2s, you get a more powerful engine that’s more impressive on the highway, a contemporary, upmarket looking hatch with sweet handling and a secure, bulletproof feel. The trade-off for the somewhat heavy-feeling engine that’s slower to react than before, is a linear, smooth response. We’re curious to see what this engine will feel like in the GT spec later this year. tushar@evo.in

A 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine replaces the 1.2 TDI in the Polo and with it comes a mild facelift and a bump up to the interiors. It is much better now, says Tushar Burman Specification: VW Polo 1.5 TDI

ou’re new in Pune. You’re probably stuck on the side of the road, trying to cross the street. Or looking down at the plate of Mughlai food and wondering if the descriptions of dishes in the menu is fiction. Or have been blindsided by the brutishness of the auto-rickshaw drivers. You are away from home, fed up and want out. Understandable. But hang on because with a few things explored, that lens will soften and getting by will be easier. Arrange for that autorickshaw ride: First things first. It’s tough going about town when you don’t have your own vehicle. Negotiating with autorickshaw folks (the term ‘negotiating’ is used very loosely here) is very draining. The situation in recent times seems to be improving in some parts of the city, where they do ply by meter. However, instead of taking a chance, you could book your autorickshaw at www.autowale.in. They have a service charge. However, rickshaw driver and the vehicle. This makes it a safer option than hailing an auto. It’s also cheaper than booking a cab.

Walk: Either in the blush of a summer evening or the dreamy rainy mornings, Pune is quite a sweet treat to the walker. There’s a wanton innocence in the lanes strewn with garnet-hued hibiscuses, peach blossoms and buttercups. In parts, the roads are wide with broad footpaths like in Baner. In some places, they wind and slope like on Senapati Bapat Road. The little path that cuts across Bhandarkar Road is a wonderland in tar. Also pretty is the long, winding Sus-Pashan link road with bends that seem to take you right into the heart of the hills. You could explore the by lanes of Aundh and window shop for whitewashed bungalows. Perfect for Dreamy your imagined soirees under the stars. The Balewadi stadium is a large ground with lots of facilities for mornings sports. It has an Olympic-sized pool, which is its chief draw. The grounds of Pune University are also a great spot to head to with your running shoes (or even a thermos and a book.). No matter where you go, you find neem trees with their delicate leaves that curl up like eyelashes and fi lter the sun. Walking is like having a deep conversation with Shop till you drop at the roadside stalls at Koregaon Park the city. It may start off shy but end up meaningful.

Features Stocking up supplies: Thankfully, there are the old-time kirana or general stores in Pune so you don’t have to get into a large supermarket every time you want some sugar. They are usually well-stocked with the usual stuff such as potatoes, onions, leafy vegetables, mushrooms, regular oils and usual spices. Nowadays, they also keep jars of olives and balls of red cabbage, broccoli flowers and if you’re lucky — zucchini. (Pronounced at times as ‘jhuggini’. Hope you can identify zucchini in its raw form because the pronunciation won’t be explanatory.) Several even offer home-delivery services as well. For fancy items like sushi rolls, avocados, wines, gourmet cheeses, and such, check out Provodor in Aundh, Nature’s Basket and Fine Foods, as well as ABC Farms in Camp. Friends being strangers you haven’t met: Transition to a new place is never easy and without friends to sandpaper that experience, it’s tougher. However, there are a lot of people in the city from outside so there’s a large group that’s feeling dislodged. Meetup.com is a good way to connect with them. There are groups with similar interests out there who welcome members. There’s a variety of groups to watch movies, discuss writing, go trekking, explore haunted houses, or consider start-ups. Some are even formed to discuss appraisals. (It’s true.) Sweet Serendipity: Overall, the appeal of Pune is quiet. It doesn’t jump out at you immediately. It needs a close scrutiny, a waiting, and then, should your spirit move you, a gentle exploration. You could get curious about what lies over a hill that shimmers in the distance. Then you climb it to find a vista

Walk the talk Koregaon Park: You’ve probably heard of the area, its notoriety, its opulence, its reputation for being the petri dish where hipsters breed. Locals might tell you KP is a tired cliché. Yet, go there. It will soothe out the routine wear-and-tear of a migrant life. There’s a dulcet hedonism about the place that will help you settle down in Pune. It’s in the white lilies and swaying bamboos of the Nullah Park (it’s an enchanting little place built over what was a nullah. Dare you to go there and not be amazed.) It’s in the quiet lanes with sentries of banyan trees. It’s in those large houses, some lovely even in their ruins. It’s in the wedges of banana cakes made of buckwheat flour (at Naughty Angel). Explore that area once and you’ll revisit every time you want to exhale.

Open-air: Some cities have the sea, some have century-old tombs strewn across the cityscape. Pune’s thumbprint is its Goldilocks ‘justright’ quality of an open-air experience. Choose dinner by the pool at Green Park or on the roof-top at Post-91, a brunch in the patio of Dario’s or Terrtulia, or even a late evening drink at Salt by the humble Balewaadi phata. Choose live music at High Spirits or Soul at ABC Farms. Watch a movie on the weekend, open-air screenings at Seasons. Choose coffee at wee coffee shops like Zodiac. Choose anything open-air and you have chosen well. Sitting outdoors for a meal is quite a moodenhancing experience (so mood-enhancing that you even forgive the ulti-multi cuisine pastiche that most restaurants offer). This experience, interestingly, does not come with the caviar pricing you find in big cities.

The Shiv mandir at Someshwar Wadi (R) reflects the quiet and peaceful side of Pune

Nightlife: An old favourite is Thousand Oaks. Good food, warm, mellow lighting, very good music, and beers. Shisha Cafe is again an old establishment. A little run-down but with the faded carpets on the wall, wine in your hands, chello kebabs on your plate, life is good. The newer, shinier spots like the Oakwood One lounge remain open until really late — maybe 1 or 2 am. over the weekends. Hoppipola in Aundh and Mezza 9 in Hinjewadi are a couple of favourite spots in the suburbs. For some late night coffee, there are the 5-star hotels of course but also check out the CCD in Chandni Chowk or the Sky Garage in Aundh. The biggest plus, perhaps, of the nightlife in the city is the relative safety it affords to women. It’s not unlikely to see a group of girls all dressed up, have fun on the dance floor and then zoom home on their two-wheelers.

that fills you up. Or you could take a wrong turn and land up at an old sixteenth century Shiv mandir at Someshwar Wadi that’s built around a banyan and has a creek in its backyard. Or watch birds in jewel-tones perch on a branch or hundreds of vines with purple flowers creep up a telephone pole. Pune is garnished with a whole lot of such mundane beauty.

Not work-life, all-life: You have one huge advantage over locals if you’ve moved to Pune from another big city. You don’t really see a 40-minute commute to be very horrible or a Life’s reason to not make any evening plans on a workday. In most other places, good going for a swim, getting to work, catching a movie, and going for drinks and dinner may be plans you make on four separate days. Not so in Pune. Places a r e still comparatively close to each other and you can indulge a last-minute whim without thinking, “So far!” Of course apart from all this, there are the malls, pubs, speciality restaurants, bookstores, and multiplexes — everything that makes urban life so comfortable in their familiarity. But that’s not how you’ll ‘settle’ down here. One settles down when you hush up and wait. When the sky will change colour, flowers will bloom in all their glory and the robust greenness of trees will envelope you. It’s when you will look up and look around and know that with a patch of earth and a patch of sky, any place could be home. And with these kinds of patches? Most certainly.

Books worth re-visiting Abhay Vaidya @abhay_vaidya

I

remember the deep impact that this book by Stephen Covey made on me when I first picked it up a few years after its publication in 1989. It is not surprising at all that this book is ranked as an all-time best-seller the world over. It is estimated to have sold more than 15 million copies in 38 languages and another 1.5 million copies in the audio version. It was this book that “launched” Covey on the world stage. He then went on to build an industry around the “7 Habits” formula, spinning out numerous books, conducting workshops around it and doing a lot more. More than anything else, the classic “7 Habits” book is an

approach to effective living. In a sense, it can help lay the foundations of life on which to build the superstructure. The book made a mark because it made a distinct departure from the “quick fi x” tips and tricks of self-help gurus who as a genre went about advising on how to get ahead in a competitive world. Stephen Covey’s book cast all that aside and took a holistic view of life. If you read the book carefully, it’ll make you think about what’s really important in life? How can you have better relationships? What is the meaning of a higher purpose in life; how to do well in your chosen field; how to avoid misunderstandings, the importance of WRITE synergy and finally, CHOICE how to be rooted in fundamental, universal truths,

which may be called the laws of the universe. As we grow up, our society teaches us to become reactive and our response to situations is often confrontationist. The book essentially tells you to be proactive and driven by your innerself without getting provoked into being reactive. Being proactive means working towards achieving self-mastery. Great enterprise requires working with others and therefore it is necessary to think win-win. “Seek first to understand and then be understood”, is a powerful principle that Covey talks about. Another great habit he talks about is to “sharpen the saw”; meaning keep physically and mentally fit through your choice of a fitness programme; moderation in habits, good reading and a deep spiritual anchor that has little to do with religion or rituals. This is a book that is definitely worth revisiting, not just by those who have read it but also by those who haven’t had a chance to pick it up. abhay.vaidya@goldensparrow.com
