‘Emotion is a top priority for me’ Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift speaks to TGS Life about her new film and songwriting

@shetty_anjali n her next film, The Giver, she plays a character completely opposite to her real self. Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, at 25, is one of the most popular artistes among the youth. Known for her emotion-filled songs, Taylor tells about her love for music and her upcoming film. “I play Rosemary, an emotionless character,” she says in an e-mail interview. “She is the first child who was designated to be the Receiver of Memory, but after five weeks of training with The Giver, she was asked to b e

released from the community.” It is based on a 1993 novel which is set in a seemingly utopian world with no conflict. All the memories of the time before this dystopian future are transferred by one person (The Giver) to another, should (s)he need them to make decisions. “She (Rosemary) is an emotionless person,” adds Swift, “where in, for me, emotion is such an important part of my life and now I guess my job, because people wouldn’t listen to my songs if they weren’t heart-broken or deeply affected. Emotion is such an important part of everything in my world.” Detractors warn boys from dating Taylor; every heartbreak and squabble is known to make it into song. Ask her if it is mere coincidence or a deliberate take, and she says, “What I do with song-writing, is celebrate memory. Almost every song of mine is in the past tense. I don’t have any future songs like what’s going to happen tomorrow. I rarely write songs about what’s happening now. What happened at one time, or something I am looking back and I didn’t fully appreciate it at that time but I am appreciating now.” Swift believes retrospection is a very important part of the song-writing process. Taylor has recently turned into an agony aunt on Instagram. (One fan called Hannah asked for Taylor’s advice via Instagram about a crush who has a girlfriend, and Taylor went all out with advice.). If not in the entertainment business, she believes she would have been a music teacher or stylist. “I am a travel junkie, I love exploring new places, destinations and food. If not in the entertainment industry, then I would have been a music teacher or a stylist.” anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

Smita Talwalkar, free and fearless By Prachi Bari

@prachibari he was a girl with a dream. She studied at Hujurpaga school in Pune. Smita Govilkar, better known as Smita Talwalkar, made the Marathi film industry stand up and take notice of her films, that highlighted issues of the common people. Smita was just a woman with a ‘never say die’ attitude, who faced life with a positive attitude always. Smita was always confident and optimistic. Asked about her change in hair do from her long silky mane, she quipped, “suits me na… it’s new and fits my personality…” “She never let misfortune or trouble affect her but would take it in her stride and keep working,” recalls Mrunal Kulkarni, who catapulted to fame with her role in Smita’s Marathi serial Avantika. Even when she was not well, she ignored it and carried on working. “In the past two to three months Smita refused to see any of us. In fact, when we requested that we would drop by, she would laugh and state that I don’t have a problem but you might not like what you see. Instead she would talk to us at length over the phone, regaling us with anecdotes and laughter would always be her tool,” recalls Mrunal. After she was diagnosed with cancer, she chose to help others suffering from the disease to face it with a positive approach. During the Cipla Foundation, World Palliative Care Day celebrations held in Pune in 2011, Smita was a special guest and she was full of optimism, she said “Only when you accept it can you gain the courage and the right attitude to fight it and to live with it.” Smita believed that a positive frame of mind could help defeat cancer. The role of a doctor is only 30 per cent but the remaining 70 per cent depends on the patient. Like diabetes, cancer is at our threshold. There is an increase in the number of cases of cancer. The way we have accepted tuberculosis, hypertension and diabetes, we will also have to learn to accept cancer, which is an experience in itself. Cancer has lost all its dread. Ironically, despite her optimism, Smita succumbed to cancer, much to the grief of the Marathi film industry and her legion of fans and friends. prachibari@gmail.com

re you recovering from a lobotomy? Do you have the Ghajini-variety amnesia that makes you lose your memory every few minutes? Or do you perhaps have the attention span of a flea and a five-yearold’s humour? If the answer to any of these is yes, then Sajid-Farhad’s Entertainment is perfect for you. Starring Akshay Kumar and Junior, the “wonder dog” whose wonders are limited to walking, sitting, barking and pressing a switch, Entertainment TGS Rating is the story of a canine Paris Hilton. ood That’s Junior, not Kumar, by the understandable reaction to what way. passes for humour in Entertainment. At least Junior holds on to his dignity.

Other dogs in the film aren’t so lucky. One little critter was cast only to latch on to Sonu Sood’s crotch and dangle from it. In another scene, an enormous pack of dogs lumbers towards Kumar, Raj and Sood, who seem to have somehow gone from Bangkok into a Windows XP wallpaper. In the course of Entertainment’s 140-minute running time, there are a few amusing instances, mostly before the interval. Depending on your mental age and how repressed you are, there will probably be a reaction to Kumar pulling out a (small) bone from his shorts. “It’s a haddi in his chaddi!” squealed someone in the theatre during the press screening, and so it is. stereotypes and is by temperament like the Carry On series. But the film is tacky, terribly lazy and the same jokes are regurgitated again and again. They weren’t scintillatingly insightful to begin with and the repetition doesn’t serve anyone well. The dialogues are filled with the stupidest of puns, which are accompanied by the usual sound effects. The performances are hammy enough for us to not need any pork farms in the country for the next decade or so. Akshay Kumar tries to replicate Mehmood’s ghost story episode from Pyar Kiye Jaa to disastrous effect. Prakash Raj contorts his face so much and so unnecessarily that it isn’t an acting performance as much as a demonstration of face yoga. Predictably, there are some appalling moments in Entertainment. For instance, Habibullah, Panna Lal’s lawyer (Johny Lever) is stabbed with knives and for some reason, this is supposed to be funny. At another point in the film, one character is asked to list his positives and he replies that he’s HIV positive. One scene sees Saakshi take on a woman (who was previously seen beating the bejesus out of Akhil). Akhil responds to the sight of the Sakshi picking the other woman up and giving her a violent whirl with a grin and “Aurat hi aurat ka bojh utha sakti hai”. Fat jokes, dogs attacking crotches, mistaken identity, puns — all you get in Entertainment is terrible clichés. It says a lot about how starved for real entertainment this country is when Entertainment, with its stale jokes and stupidity, gets a laugh. (By special arrangement with Firstpost.com)

people who annoy him, and Groot, a lovable tree-like humanoid who can kick copious amounts of butt with his branch-limbs. They’re all bizarre and completely mismatched, and the film milks this mismatched-

ness to hilarious levels. They bicker, they fight, they punch each other in the face, but ultimately they realise that they need to stick together if they want to save their respective worlds.

The villains are equally cool — Ronan (played by Lee Pace) is pretty scary to look at, Nebula (Karen Gilan) is pure evil and Thanos (voiced by Josh Brolin) also makes an appearance. The minor characters like John C Reilly as a corspman, Michael Rooker as Yondu and Benicio Del Toro as The Collector are all fun as well. They’ll probably all have more significant roles in the sequels (teasers from Guardians of the Galaxy 2 were shown at ComicCon earlier this year). With its many characters and landscapes, the universe imagined in Guardians is vast. Marvel continues to close the gap between the Avengers and the Guardians, and it’s insane to think of what we’ll get in the future. It’s not often that we get adrenaline, heart and humour rolled into one cohesive, iconic epic. And once the film is over, you’ll know the fun has really just begun. igella Lawson, Vikas Khanna, Matt Moran, Sanjeev Kapoor and David Rocco are just a few of the legion of celebrity chefs we watch on TV every day. It would be right to say that among the different reality shows that are so widely spread across channels, cooking shows dominate the TRPs. Back in the ’80s, we had one TV channel with one show dedicated to cooking, where one host would be seen behind a kitchen platform with a few bowls of ‘dhaniya’, ‘mirch’, ‘jeera’, ‘adrak’, etc. A little into the ’90s and we saw India’s first celebrity chef, Sanjeev Kapoor, add a little twist to cooking on his show ‘Khana Khazana’ with new ideas and a slightly better looking kitchen. Today, reality cooking shows have reached a whole new level. From ‘Vicky goes Veg’ to ‘Masterchef Australia’, each show is unique, giving us a different taste of the culinary world. They are fun to watch, inspirational and easy to relate to. As these celebrity chefs weave their way into the new age cooking culture, they are broadening the horizon in terms of ingredients, vegetables, meat and spices. Liaison Officer Shahi Farooqui says, “Today, when I watch these reality shows with my daughter, I wonder how we as children sat and watched that one old and boring show in the

’80s. Thanks to the shows today, our idea of a kitchen has evolved and our ingredients are more interesting. All of this brings a new energy into our cooking. We know so much more about different types of cheeses and mushrooms. We are also aware of the different types of cuisines and food pairings.” Apart from dominating TV, even the worldwide web is flooded with sites and blogs dedicated to cuisines and food culture. Chefs interact one-on-one with the audience on topics such as which ingredients can be replaced to customise a dish. The interaction is two-way: the average hobbyist gets an insight into the hospitality industry. Food bloggers review new dishes, restaurants and unearth cuisines, and make a career out of it. Head chef at Pesto Pesto, Prakash Joshi says, “Considering the fact that people are now more aware of different cuisines, we have to ensure that our food is up to the mark. Our clients want fusion, different kinds of dressings, low fat and more flavour, but an authentic dish at the same time. Italian food is known to be subtle, but the Indian palette is accustomed to hot food, filled with various spices and flavours, so our job is to blend both in such a way that it not only tastes Italian, but also meets your expectations.” And not just taste, foodies now

What’s cooking? Besides the cooking aspect of the shows, most people have also gained an interest in the ambience of the kitchen. They want more colour, efficiency, gadgets, a pantry with a more professional layout that eases cooking and serving, etc. Even the crockery has evolved from iron, steel and brass cookware; we now have nonstick and ceramic crockery that is stylish and purpose specific.

expect variety, food presentation with fresh and exotic ingredients and are willing to spend big bucks for a satisfying meal. snehakrishnan@hotmail.com

The yummy city food trail What: Jayesh Paranjape always had the idea of a ‘food trail’, but he never thought he’d find any takers. “Through my travel company The Western Routes, I do a lot of city tours and heritage walks. While on these walks, I found that there was a demand for a formal food trail particularly among expats, foreign tourists or exchange students, which would get them a taste of authentic food of Pune. So, I started researching on food trails in other cities and found that only Delhi has a dedicated food walk concept. The idea is to take people to local restaurants which they may not have heard or read about, that serve typical ‘Marathi’ food,” said Jayesh. The first food trail he did was in September 2013. Chef and food writer Karen Anand asked him to take her and a few food bloggers on a ‘Puneri’ food trail. “So, I designed a customised food walk for them. It went really well

and everyone loved the concept. That’s how it started. Then after some more research and some alterations to the initial route, I finally came up with a breakfast trail of the old city,” he says. Social media: Currently, it’s the sole medium through which he gets participants for the food trails. After the first two food trails, he created a separate Facebook page for Pune Food Trails and got almost 300 ‘likes’ in one day. The list is growing. “Now I have people who have been on my trails and they are asking for newer routes and newer restaurants to cover. I also have a TripAdvisor page which has received a few excellent reviews. Currently we are #2 out of 40 things to do in Pune. Thanks to that, I get a lot of travellers

In the past, they have done a few festival walks too. Future plans: The plan is to have a food trail in Camp. Similar to the old city, the Cantonment area has some places known for good food. “I am currently working on a Cantonment food walk. People have been asking for a purely nonvegetarian food walk.”

Foodies on the go

enquiring about the trails.” Activities: Currently he is doing a ‘breakfast trail through the old city’. Another event is the Pune

Food Hunt It is a treasure hunt, where people have to make teams, decipher clues, locate different eating joints in the city and perform some food tasks.

Response: “The response has been overwhelming. Initially I had thought that I would get a response primarily from foreign tourists or expats only. But right from our first trail, we’ve had a good mix of foreigners, Indians who have migrated to Pune for work and even people who are born, brought-up and live in Pune.” Reach us at: www.facebook.com/ punefoodtrails

THRILL OF DRIVING

Evolution of the species VIKRANT DATE

The Punto has evolved. Ouseph Chacko drives one to see how much better it is

Verdict

T

his is the Fiat Punto Evo. True to its name, it is an evolution of the Punto we know so well. Now, the Punto has always been a good looker and Fiat knows enough not to mess with it. What they’ve done then is keep the basic silouhette and proportions of the Punto intact and what’s changed (quite obviously) is the nose, the rear and the details — the grille is bigger and lower, the badge moves up to just ahead of the bonnet, the bumper is a lot sportier and the reindeer effect headlamps (Fiat’s description, not ours) look nice. The rear gets a racier bumper and clear lens tail lamps and it’s all topped off with tasteful doses of chrome. 16-inch wheels are now standard on the Emotion, lower variants get 15s. The only eyesore is the amount of light visible under the car — the Punto has an SUVlike 195mm of ground clearance. Open the hefty door and you’ll see the interiors have taken a few leaps and bounds — the dashboard is from the new Linea, the seats get new contours, the seat cushions are firmer and a lot of attention went into setting right the old Punto’s rough edges. This last bit is quite evident — there’s little to be seen of the old Punto’s hard plastics — the dash is a mix of nice textures and soft-touch surfaces, the glovebox lid now opens

with a beautifully damped motion, there’s Merc S-Class like ambient lighting and even things like the roof lining material and the white stitching on the seats point to Fiat taking the Punto seriously upmarket. The driving position is still a bit off – it’s a short arm, long leg posture and adjustable reach and a bit more rake for the steering column would really help improve this. Rear seat space isn’t the best either but rear passengers get a few more creature comforts. The Punto Evo gets a dedicated air-con vent for the rear seats and, there’s a clever half-litre bottle holder under it, so your soft drink will stay cool. Practicality has gone up a bit as well — the door pockets are now bigger and the rear seats now split and fold forward twice. We snatched the keys to the most powerful Punto Evo available — the 90HP (actually 91.7bhp). The engine is carried over from the old car with no mechanical changes (the 75HP gets altered gear ratios) and hence, remains one of the Punto’s biggest weaknesses. The trouble is it performs acceptably well only when you use full throttle. Provided you row through the rubbery gearbox and give it lots of boot, you will make reasonably good time getting to wherever you are going. Part throttle, which is

what we use most of the time results in flat, unexciting power delivery. It doesn’t have the spiky power of the Swift and it certainly doesn’t feel like it’s making the 209Nm of torque Fiat claims it does. Part of the problem is with the Punto’s sheer weight — Fiat says that they are using thinner sheet metal now (without compromising on the crash structure) but at 1198kg, the Evo is still one of the heaviest hatchbacks around. On the plus side, the Punto is also one of the best riding hatchbacks around. Where other cars crash through big craters, the Punto’s suspension swallows them up silently. The handling is good too — there is lots of grip. The official launch of the Punto Evo is circa August this year. Prices haven’t been disclosed yet, but Fiat insists it will be very competitive so expect to pay around Rs 8 lakh for it. What you get for that money is Fiat’s Blue & Me Bluetooth system (that annoyingly doesn’t feature audio streaming), front airbags with a dual-stage airbag for the driver, rear air-con vents, power windows and climate control. True to its name, the Punto has evolved. All Fiat needs to do now is work on improving the engines and their power delivery. ouseph.chacko@gmail.com

Smart savings The Hero Splendor iSmart boasts of start-stop technology, a first for an Indian motorcycle. Ken Sunny swings a leg over

T

GAURAV THOMBRE

he Splendor was at a time, the largest-selling motorcycle in the world and despite other manufacturers launching a host of competing products, continues to sell in large numbers. It has received a number of cosmetic updates over the years, apart from new variants. Hero is now trying to take the game to a new level with the Splendor iSmart that features start-stop technology to enhance its already stupendous fuel efficiency. The iSmart borrows design cues from the Splendor NXG, and the riding position is not any different either. The partdigital dials from the Passion X Pro

would have been a nice touch, but the iSmart gets the same instrument pod as the other Splendors. Overall fit-finish levels and build quality are typical of Hero MotoCorp’s products, though given the iSmart badging we think it could have upped quality levels further. The key difference between this bike and the regular Splendor is the start-stop system. Just the way start-stop systems function in cars, the system on the Splendor kills the engine when the motorcycle comes to a halt in neutral, for five seconds or more. As soon as the clutch lever is pulled in the engine is fired again, allowing the rider to take off by simply slotting the gear lever into first, thus eliminating the need to thumb the starter button. This, apart from giving fuel efficiency a small boost, makes in-

city riding far easier. It makes life much easier for regular commuters in congested, stop-and-go traffic conditions. The motorcycle needs to be in neutral for the system to function though. There are no mechanical changes to the motorcycle however, and the Splendor iSmart is powered by the same 97.2cc four-stroke, air-cooled single-cylinder engine developing 7.7bhp and 8.04Nm of torque, and is mated to the same four-speed gearbox. Thus the iSmart does not feel any different to ride compared to the regular Splendor. Overtakes need planning however, as the engine feels stressed at high revs. Cycle parts remain unchanged, and the iSmart has the familiar, comfortable feel the Splendor is known for, soaking in undulations well. The skinny tyres do not inspire confidence around corners, though the iSmart retains the nimble feel of the NXG when cutting through traffic. A peppy engine and short gearing mean gear changes are minimal in traffic, and for all it’s worth, the Splendor iSmart is fun

AUGUST 9, 2014 PUNE

THRILL OF DRIVING

to ride around town. The iSmart does not get a front disc brake even as an option though, and its brakes leave a little to be desired in terms of bite and urgency. An optional disc brake would have been welcome, considering that the Splendor iSmart is one of the most technically advanced 100cc machines. While the manufacturer has not quoted any fuel efficiency figures for the Splendor iSmart, we expect it to return slightly better mileage than its siblings. Pricing is key in this segment, and at Rs 49,125 ex-showroom Pune, the iSmart is one of the most expensive 100cc bikes. However, when you consider the technology, the premium the bike commands over the Splendor Pro (Rs 47,946, ex-showroom Pune) isn’t too much, especially since the Splendor has been the dominant choice in this segment. We wish Hero had given it a digital dash (with a trip computer to provide information like distance to empty etc), and a disc brake. Overall, the Splendor iSmart Left: Split grab rail adds a sporty touch. Below: All-analogue instrument cluster is disappointing compared to digital ones that rivals offer

is a bike that offers great fuel efficiency, courtesy a proven engine with technology that is unique and bringing a new dimension to the crowded 100cc commuter segment. The two-tone colour schemes and sporty bits add to its appeal, but with the ‘original’ Splendor with the rectangular headlamp and basic body panels still selling in large numbers, it should be interesting to see how prospective buyers respond to the new design and paint schemes in this crucial segment. ken.sunny@goldensparrow.com

As You

Wish

You want a shoe that fits, a watch that keeps perfect time, or the elusive spare to kick-start your vintage ride. Who will you call? Anjali Shetty has the lowdown

Shoe designer Naman Shah with the collection that he will be showcasing alongwith designer Jayesh Sachdev of Quirk Box at the Lakme Fashion Week

W

hen you’ve got everything money can buy, the ultimate luxury is customisation or bespoke. Things made exactly to your specifications and needs, to fit your lifestyle. It doesn’t even have to be something new. It could be the small gear in a heirloom watch that makes it tick again. We meet the bespoke people of Pune, humming away in their workshops.

Cinderella man Who: Naman Shah of Cuero What: Shoe designer What does a college graduate do when offered a position at the zeitgeist that is Google? He turns it down to become a shoe designer. Meet 25-year-old Naman Shah, who opted to pursue his hobby instead of a steady career in finance. He is not your regular shoe designer who will bombard you with designs from magazines and manipulate you into picking one that is trendy. Naman will sit you down, discuss your ideas, show you leather samples and then measure your feet. “The measurement is taken, starting with the breadth first, then the in-step, followed by the length with a special measuring tape for feet,” he patiently explains. “We do the same for flat-foots and those suffering from osteoporosis. The measuring pattern is the same but the designing is different as there are different factors to be considered.” His forte is arc

support design, especially beneficial for those with flat feet who have to stand for long hours. He also observes the way your step falls and designs to avoid sole erosion. On the difficulties of getting the fit right, he says, “Many times, feet swell up during the day making the measurements go awry. So, we request people to come at a particular time for measurements. Human error is possible as we make hand-stitched shoes, but we are slowly overcoming it.” With these specific features in mind, Cuero Luxury was launched in August 2013, with Chandrakant and Mangesh Salunkhe as partners. “I don’t really follow any designers because my father is my idol,” he says. “It was he who inspired me to take up shoe designing so that I could get every man to dress well. He urged me to delve deeper into the world of fashion.” Naman is teaming up with label Quirk Box for the upcoming Lakme Fashion week in Mumbai. Operating from his office in Salisbury Park, Naman says the motivation behind making bespoke shoes is to make style affordable. His shoes are available between Rs 8,000 and Rs 25,000. “I want to change the way men look at shoes,” says the man who trained under Chandrakant Salunkhe. “Always remember, fashion keeps changing but style stays constant.” What he can do: Make you the perfect fit and restore your favourite pair. “I have no formal training or theoretical knowledge on the subject. I learnt everything by simply observing my father.” — Dinesh Deshpande

Time travel

Who: Dinesh Deshpande of Tropical Industries What: Watch-maker You can tell from the sparkle in his eye that he has many stories to tell. Watch-maker Dinesh Deshpande dropped out of school at the age of 10 to help his father repair and manufacture watches and clocks. The frail 75-year-old strives to create the perfect edge for the hand of a 200-year-old English grandfather clock. The seconds turn to minutes and the cuckoo bird calls out at the stroke of the hour. He excuses himself and shuts it down. “It will keep ringing and disturb our conversation though I love working with the tick-tock and singsong rhtythm in the background,” Deshpande admits. “We lost our workshop at Lakdi Pul during the 1961 floods, after which we shifted to Ambegaon. In 1975, we moved back to the city and since then I have been serving watch aficionados. I have no formal training or theoretical knowledge on the subject. I learnt everything by simply observing my father. This skill can never be taught. My mother never learned how to read time but was one of the most skilled watch makers we had.” Deshpande runs Tropical Industries at Sahakar Nagar, where repairing a watch or clock costs Rs 200 and goes up to a whopping Rs one lakh. He also sells in-house creations that costs Rs 500 onwards.

Gear-up

Who: Subhash Satalkar aka Bhau at Vishwakarma Garage What: Bike mechanic extraordinaire Subhash Satalkar or Bhau of Vishwakarma Garage is as loved as only a nimble-fingered mechanic can be. Greasing up since when he was 16, he has been in the business for 52 years. Today, he works exclusively on 400 vintage bikes in the city. The 68-year-old’s day starts at 7 am and doesn’t end until he is satisfied with his fi x-it project. Nothing excites Bhau as much as bikes. He has ridden his Pearl Yamaha to Leh-Ladakh and on a one-day loop to Bangalore, among other trips. Bhau says, “The bikes are not my customers or a means of making money. They are my Watch-maker Dinesh Deshpande loves priceless assets that spending time at his workshop are irreplaceable and incomparable. You name any part of an Yezdi or Java bike, and I make it here. I treat each bike as my own. I also enjoy customising them for the client. It is fun to bring out a new leaf from an already popular product.” His garage is fi lled with moulds to shape almost every bike part, and when he comes across anything new, he fabricates. The idea is to preserve and make most of engines that are cost effective and endowed with great pick-up. Repairing can cost anything from Rs 25000 to a lakh of rupees. The make and feel of vintage motorcycles is what he loves and the experience of riding them gives him real joy. He warns against getting a vintage bike just as a status symbol or on a whim. “These definitely need less maintenance than new bikes that often have parts that are outsourced and expensive, causing the owners to either sell it or wait for long periods to replace it. On the other hand, vintage bike parts can be moulded and redesigned as per convenience, but needs special attention when it comes to assembling, welding and other nuances. Some parts are tricky and need practice to plug in, otherwise it is an easy process,” he says. What he can do: Maintain your vintage bike Reach him @ Vishwakarma Auto Garage, Manik Baug

Deshpande makes every possible part of a watch or clock inhouse. “There are a few things, such as the gong, that we source from Germany,” Deshpande says. “The rest is made right here. I have equipment that can recreate and replicate the parts of any watch or clock. The only conditions I have are the buyer needs to shell out the right amount and be patient. Customising takes time, you can’t expect it to happen overnight. There are specifics involved such as drafting, designing, cutting, creation of minute objects such as hands, dials etc. Unfortunately, people do not want to wait and go in for quartz watches.” He does not repair newly-made watches because he cannot guarantee their life. He would rather work on a reliable antique. He will readily create or recreate a piece for you; but you (and your however large clock) need to come to him. He won’t come to you. “Most watches and clocks that come to me are in a really bad condition,” he says. “There is no book or set rule on repairing. It is all in my head. I keep experimenting with dials, mechanism and designs. I enjoy this the most. There are times when finding or making a certain part takes over a year. But that is the beauty of this job. It makes you feel wanted and important when people from across the globe come to you for help,” he says with a smile. What he can do: Repair antique watches and clocks. Customise a brand new piece. Reach him @ Tropical Industries, Sahakar Nagar

Who: Sangeet Lalwani What: Director, Goldmart ‘We feel good only if you look good’, is what Sangeeta Lalwani, director, Gold Mart Jewellers believes. The store specialises in customising jewellery and offers a variety of gold, diamond, ruby and emerald bangles and necklaces etc. “Customisation is what our grandmothers and ancestors did. They would sit with the local jewellers for hours and design a unique piece. This was forgotten when people started buying ready-to-wear jewellery. But the trend has come back now as people are keen on wearing individual pieces,” says Sangeeta. She does not blindly follow the trend and insists on comfort. “The idea is to be proud of what you are wearing and also be comfortable in it. We have customers who are inspired by a particular design but we make sure we discuss the utility of the design before going in for it. It is our responsibility to ensure the piece looks good and is appreciated. I do not believe in making a design for the sake of it; every customised piece is special and should speak volumes of our store,” adds Sangeeta, who personally supervises designs. A diamond customisation takes around two weeks while a gold piece will take 8 to 15 days. She says customisation can be done with any weight of gold and it does not matter whether it is one gram or 100 grams. She gets orders for replicating an old neckpiece , ancestral rings etc. “I have not come across people who are allergic to gold and we avoid use of other metals or alloys.” What she can do: A wide variety of exclusive designs in gold and damonds. In the mood A mood board can be the perfect catalyst for you to string together creative ideas in a productive and constructive way By Anjali Shetty @shetty_anjali

f you are the creative sort, build an inspiring space in your home to stir up the creative juices. No, we are not taking about a doodle pad or a diary next to the bed. It’s all about going professional, like those in the visual media, and creating your very own mood board. Mood or inspiration boards are used by designers (fashion, interiors, commercial artists, product designers, movie stylists, set designers etc.) to develop concepts and communicate them to colleagues or clients. Interior designers tells us that residents of Pune are now installing mood boards at homes. You could put one in your study, bedroom or near your desk — any place where you are most creatively productive. Roheena Nagpal, a business architect and principal design consultant for Atelier, an interior boutique in

Aundh explains, “Mood boards are the first step towards creating a design or expressing an idea. These boards create the skeletal system of a concept and start you off on thinking how you want the design to feel. Rearrange furniture to give your abode a new look even if that isn’t the best place for that piece. For instance, most of us have a bookcase, shelf or table that is a magnet for clutter because it’s the first surface you encounter when you walk in. Your sofa is fading from being 2 next to the window for years. That’s not a stain, but it means that

M

oving your furniture from one place to another is the easiest way to give your house a new look, without buying anything new. There are some more merits. Huffingtonpost. com shares a few more reasons to try something new with your furniture arrangement:

Because your furniture has been 1moved, in the same place since you what often happens is that we keep it where we first placed it,

the couch needs to be rearranged.

You don’t know what’s 3 underneath. While you might find a lot of dust, you might also find the keys you thought you lost earlier this year.

The right arrangement can make a room feel bigger. Not everything has to be up against a wall — unless you’re really short on space. In that case, getting rid of excess clutter or furniture can do wonders. IANS

Can’t stop falling in love with a ghost Title: Gulab Author: Annie Zaidi Publisher: Harper Collins Pages: 186 Price: Rs350

By Shilpa Raina

T

here is a mysterious, parallel world out there. Some believe, some ridicule and some dread. But what if one falls in love with a ghost, without even realising this? Together they build a house of dreams, till one fine day the ghost decides to move on. From the very beginning we know what to expect from the story, yet the simplicity with which the author has woven monologues and dialogues, built up suspense and created situations

keeps you hooked. What binds the narrative together is the 24-hour time-span within which the story takes many unexpected turns. Of course, it is a love story. But what sort of love will blossom between the living and the dead? We all have heard ghost stories where we have been told some spirits stay in this world because they have some unfinished job or some unfulfi lled dreams. And it is this sense of unfulfi lment that has been bothering the protagonist, Nikunj, who after years of bewilderment and failed quests of finding his beloved Saira, gets a telegram announcing her death and a request to attend Book the funeral. Then Review begins the quest of finding her grave in the Muslim

graveyard, where he meets two other men— one a Hindu and another a Muslim. Through these moments of loss, Zaidi has successfully created scenes which are eerie enough to scare the reader. Like the one where Nikunj sees himself from a distance, and realises his soul is not in his body, but outside it. Though he later claims of have “out-of-body” experience, the author indeed has powerfully used her imaginative skills to create scenes that fittingly make for a Bollywood horror script. It would be unfair to reveal how the love story unfolds, but Zaidi’s strength lies in colloquially telling a tale that might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but something many believe in. Her ability to make Nikunj believable, someone who is afraid of getting into a fight and someone who is vulnerable and lost is what makes this small book enjoyable. Zaidi has explanations for all not-so-believable moments and somehow makes us believe those moments. IANS
