WHY WRITE A CHRISTIAN BOOK ABOUT PERIODS?

Here are three reasons:

1. The Bible speaks to all of life

For roughly 50% of the population, for a large section of our lives, periods are a regular reality. 400-500 times in your lifetime—and for 60 days of the year—you’re on your period. To a greater or lesser extent, our menstrual cycle shapes our schedule, what we do and how we feel in the course of any given month—even beyond that particular “time of the month”. If you’re a Christian, there is not one area of life which can be divorced from your faith. There is not one area that God declares himself uninterested in. If the biggest reality underpinning the universe is that Jesus is Lord and that he died to bring us into an eternal relationship with God, then that should shape how we think about all the other realities of our day-to-day existence. There are plenty of great books out there that show you what the Bible says when it comes to social media, work, leisure, sex, beauty or friendship. But periods? Not so much. But God can—indeed, God wants to—speak into how we experience periods. He wants to affirm us and encourage us and challenge us as we seek to walk with Jesus on every day of the month.

2. Life speaks the gospel to us

It works the other way round too. It’s not just that the Bible speaks to us about real life; real life speaks to us about the gospel. “Consider the ravens…” says Jesus;

“Consider how the wild flowers grow…” (Luke 12 v 24, 27). Look around, says Jesus, and see how God…. And while, ok, he didn’t quite say, Consider your periods, the general principle is that we live in a created world that speaks of its Creator. So considering our periods is what we’re going to do here. This means periods don’t just have to be something we endure or put up with. They can also be something positive: something that reminds us of the spiritual realities that underpin our existence, and that presents us with an opportunity to fix our eyes on the Lord Jesus.

3. If we don’t look to the Bible to shape our thinking, our culture will shape our thinking instead

Let’s be honest: your pastor probably won’t be preaching about periods anytime soon. But there are plenty of other people who will. The last few years have seen an increasing number of voices talking about periods in our culture. Social media is full of lively conversations on issues such as period poverty, the tampon tax, free bleeding, environmentally-friendly menstrual-hygiene choices, health inequalities, the gender pain gap, specific conditions such as endometriosis, and what to call the people who have periods—women, menstruators, or something else?

Here’s the thing: nothing we read or watch or listen to is ideologically neutral—it’s all subtly (or not so subtly) telling us how to think and how to act. If religion gets a mention, it’s almost always in negative terms. Christianity is blamed for perpetuating centuries of taboos around periods. Words like “puritanical” are used as an insult.

So… is Christianity the bad guy here? How do we make sense of what the Bible says about periods when it jars with the way 21st-century Westerners see things?

If we’re not proactive about thinking Christianly about a subject, then we’ll just end up having our thinking shaped by what the world tells us. And while that’s rarely going to be all wrong, it’s not going to be all right, either. For Christians, it’s Scripture which is meant to define the good, the bad and the important. We need to learn to think critically about culture—to get equipped to sift truth from error, to identify wisdom amid the folly, and to have all our thinking shaped by God’s word.

Whoever you are, my aim is that you reach the end of this book celebrating who God has made you and how God has saved you, and the fact that he speaks liberating and positive truth into all of life’s experiences.

Peace for the Anxious Soul

Having battled with anxiety in her own life, Helen Thorne offers words of hope and help to both Christians and non-Christians who feel anxious. Here is a sample of her new book.

I can’t do this anymore… No one cares… It’s all so out of control… There is no hope… If you’re anything like me, such thoughts have crossed your mind in recent months. Whether you’ve been working relentlessly on the front line or on furlough and bored; whether you’ve been juggling the multi-faceted pressures of a home with many people or enduring the relentless silence, where it’s just you alone; whether you’ve been protected from the worst losses of recent times or have known the horrors of personal grief, unemployment, homelessness and more—the pandemic has left most of us reeling, anxious in many ways. Since the start of 2020, the Christian walk has felt increasingly like a limp.

Such doubts should not surprise, the pandemic has brought a tsunami of pain that is bound to impact our gaze. We can treat each other with compassion as we struggle with our anxious thoughts— seeing straight when brought low is so very hard to do. So, what are we to do? In the face of those thoughts, there’s a choice to be made in every believer’s heart: feed the lies or fight the lies. The path we take will have a profound impact on how we do.

OPTION A is the easiest by far. A difficult thing happens and we feel a fleeting sense of despair. Another tough thing appears and we allow

it to bolster our suspicion that life is bleak. With every subsequent moment of suffering our opinion that there is no hope gets stronger. Until, one day, we wake up and discover hope is completely out of view. We practise interpreting hard things as hopeless things. And, in the end, we become what we have been training to be: someone who can see nothing good in the months ahead. Our taught theology may survive—we might still be able to articulate something of God’s goodness that we once read in a book—but we don’t live it, we don’t love it, because we’ve spent too long practising staring into the dark.

OPTION B is a far harder call. It involves noticing the lies as they begin to form. It means living out Paul’s call to demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). To grab hold of our, often instinctual, anxious interpretations and to measure them by the plumbline of Scripture and to see where they are leading us astray. This is no mere positive thinking—the Bible never calls us to positive affirmations each day—but rather to see where our thoughts have departed from God’s sure and certain word and to dive deep into the abundant evidence God provides that, as his children, we are safe, loved, equipped and more.

Battles are never easy. There can be complicating factors along the way. But, in the Christian life, we are never called to fight alone. The Spirit of God has promised to be at work in our hearts and to keep changing us until we are perfectly like Jesus (Philippians 1:6). Our brothers and sisters in Christ, even when our only access to them is socially distanced, are there to spur us on (Hebrews 10:24).

We can listen to each other’s words and when we hear one another articulating things that are leading us to fear, despair, bitterness, insecurity or sin we can (gently) nudge each other to come back to the one who brings life and light. We can dig deep into passages like Ephesians 1 that articulate God’s identity and ours with such clarity. We can look at the narratives of Genesis, Exodus and Ruth and see God’s unending provision and care. And, when exhausted, we can keep doing so in bite-sized yet beautiful ways—drip-feeding droplets of truth into each other’s parched lives.

And, as we take thoughts captive, little by little we will find wonderful growth begins to appear.

Confidence, trust, perseverance, obedience, hope—even joy. Isn’t that the sort of spiritual fruit we’d like to bear?
