Not yet, Rizal. Not yet.

Many Filipino young men and women are ignorant and passive when it comes to social issues as their actions show they are still blind to social injustices and inequality.

Rizal, the young men and women of this country are not yet free. They are chained to the stronghold of dependency and are afraid to stand for their country. They are not the change this nation is hoping for.

The torch of truth and bravery were long dead Rizal. The torch the youth has, they leave it behind to walk with darkness and to mingle in the dominion of fame, of power, of money.

They do not bring their torch to light their path. They are afraid to witness the hidden peccadillo. They are afraid to let the light conquer their desires.

Today is not the day, Rizal. Tomorrow we’ll see.

A

s we sail through the big waves of this academic year in CLSU, some will sail through a new direction encountering the high tides for the first time. Others will continue travelling the same path. And inevitably, some sailors will row their boats toward the end of their journey and will leave a legacy to other aspiring sailors.

Every school year is a fresh start for CLSU in its quest for excellently fulfilling its duties as an outstanding academic institution. This quest will not be realized without the beginning journey of more than 3,000 freshmen enrolled this year. In behalf of the CLSU Collegian, let me take this opportunity to welcome the freshmen students. They shall sail through the changing tides in CLSU for the first time. In difficult times, just bear in mind that all your ates and kuyas have experience the same, if not the worse.

All challenges we encounter may have similarities but there is a new learning perspective for each.

Our four to six-year journey in CLSU will determine who we are in the next 30 years or even for the rest of our lives so make every second count for there are second chances in life. Humongous waves come rarely, we have to stand firm the moment it will crash us. Some whose journey is about to end have already withstood the most huge waves in college and will leave us inspiration to move forward in the direction we want to take. Dreams should not remain dreams.

For the CLSU Collegian staff, 11 student writers’ journey is about to end on April 12, 2012, but it will just be the beginning of real life for most of them.

As early as now, I would like to congratulate the success of this school year for all. Whether we encounter the big or small waves, these are just all part of the ocean.

Intellectual killing

O

ver crowded fish cages is one of the probable causes of fish kills that happened in Pangasinan and Batangas. And just like these incidents, if the administration of the Central Luzon State University (CLSU) will continue to stock more than 50 students

on classroom storage.

Just like cages where fishes were killed, CLSU classrooms are overcrowded.

With this, the university should understand that learning factors include not only good teaching skills and the students’ intellectual capacity but also

This semester, the university admitted about 3,000 freshmen.

The CLSU student population including the upper classmen has reached 9,000.

In the previous years, it had been known that CLSU lacked classrooms, yet, 3,000 additional students were accepted this semester without any concrete plan to address the problem

environmental factors.

If CLSU wants to increase its enrolment, there is no problem with that because having more students means greater asset to the university. But if this university keeps on accepting students without addressing the problem on classroom shortage immediately, it may be fatal.

CLSU should know what to prioritize: quality or quantity? With our current situation, perhaps quantity comes beforequality.

CLSU Collegian finally initiates placement examination

After five years, the CLSU Collegian held a placement examination for its new editorial board.

Former Associate Editor Mariell Anne Salatamos (BA Psychology) and Features Editor Carla Padilla (AB Development Communication) were chosen editors-in-chief.

Padilla and Salatamos will serve as the EIC for the first and second semesters SY 2011-2012 respectively.

The other key editors are Carmel Bernadette Laturnas (AB Development Communication), associate editor and Edwin Respicio (BS Civil Engineering), managing editor.

The new section editors are Lorie Ann Castelo (news editor), Johnica Alejandro (features editor), Mark Lyndon Antaran (sports editor), King Ardee Miguel (literary editor), all from AB Development Communication and Nelia Rivera (opinion editor), BS Information Technology.

The said examination consisted of a written test and an interview, the first was conducted last June 10 and the last on July 17.

The examinees were evaluated based on their training and related experiences, awareness and stand on issues, communication and journalism skills, and enumeration of duties and responsibilities in their preferred positions.

Prof. Ben Domingo Jr., Dr. Regidor Gaboy and Prof. Mercedes Blancas comprised the screening committee that evaluated the aspirants in written and oral examinations.

“We hope that through the placement examination, the CLSU Collegian will have the best student writers to run the publication,” Prof.

Blancas said.

CLSU offers ABLL, BS Math

1st Plowman-CLSU Collegian grand reunion held

Central Luzon State University, through the College of Arts and Sciences started offering Bachelor of Arts in Language and Literature (ABLL) and Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (BS Math) last June 2011.

ABLL The ABLL is a four-year direct course program that focuses on the training both oral and written English communication skills of the students.

Opportunities as technical/creative writer, executive secretary, training and development secretary, public relations officer, researcher, call center supervisor, editor and the like await to the graduates of ABLL. The ABLL is administered by the Department of

English headed by Prof. Adelina Soriano.

This curriculum allows students to receive a certificate for an Associate of Arts in Language and Literature after two years and a diploma after four years.

BSMath The BS Math is four year degree program administered by the Department of Mathematics and Physics.

It has a total of 135 units of major courses, general education, and pure / applied mathematics courses.

The program includes elective subjects and it also provides options for the students either to have a practicum or to conduct a thesis during their senior year.

This degree program aims to prepare students

for mathematicsoriented occupations in business, industries, g o v e r n m e n t and educational i n s t i t u t i o n s .

Applicants who want to enrol in BS-Math should have a general academic grade of 80% or better and pass the interview. Transferees and shifters must have a general average of 2.50 or better; their grades in any general education mathematics courses must not be lower than 2.50.

CEd grad lands 10th place in LET

By Lyndon Macanas A graduate of the College of Education landed 10th place in the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) last April.

Marites Del Prado Antonio, 37, who took the exam in Baguio City, got an overall rating of 82.80 %.

Central Luzon State University registered a passing rate of 47.06 %. The national passing rate elementary level was 15.05 Antonio did not undergo formal review classes.

Thus, she had low expectations regarding passing the exams.

It started from the Battle of Manila Bay, the defeat of Spaniards during the Spanish-American War; hence, the Act of the Declaration of Independence was publicly read. Filipino revolutionary forces headed by General Emilio Aguinaldo, proclaimed the sovereignty and independence of the country from the colonial rule of the Spaniards.

Unfortunately, the United States and Spain did not recognize the declaration; instead the Spanish government later ceded the Philippines to the United States in the 1898 Treaty of Paris, with 10 signatories that eventually ended the SpanishAmerican War. By virtue of Republic Act No. 4166, President Diosdado Macapagal as a signatory,

designated June 12 as the country's Independence Day. Now we Filipinos also observe it as Flag Day. The Philippines is now a stronger republic striving towards national stability from all fronts of oppression towards economic, social, political and cultural freedom.

As we continue striding forward, stretching our wings and taking it to its limit, let us

rekindle the fire that once we had. This consuming fire will lead us to passionate action to move and act. Passion that will throttle us to promote, preserve, and protect what our forefathers fought for —independence.

Rizal’s wish: Living heroes for today

A

long with the Philippines celebration of its 113th year of Independence, it also commemorated the triple golden birthday of its foremost national hero Jose Rizal last June 19, 2011. Filipinos from all over the world paid tribute to honor Rizal’s contribution to the freedom we have today. In the different sectors of the country like the media, church, school, government, etc., they made efforts to remind all Filipinos how he lived and died passionately aiming for nationalism to be realized in the times when Philippines was a slave of selfish colonizers.

Meanwhile, if one had the chance to know Rizal popularly called as “Pepe” during his childhood, what would be the best gift one could offer him? It’s a tough question maybe.

In that sense, let’s

follow the basic steps in giving a birthday present to someone.

First step will be knowing what he likes. Pepe loved the Philippines deeply.

In his childhood in Calamba, Laguna, he often spent time in their backyard playing with his dog Berganza and pony Alipato, surrounded with fruit trees like atis, mangga, mabolo, santol, chico, tampoy, sampalok, kasuy, makopa, duhat, balimbing, granada, kamias, langca, banana, papaya and orange.

Pepe’s love for his surroundings grew so passionate that he became a naturalist to study our local plants and animals.

He was also the perfect definition of versatility. Rizal was an excellent artist, writer, and medical practitioner.

for many things.

Next, knowing what his goals are.

Rizal was the most prominent advocate of reforms during the Spanish colonial era.

He was a proponent of institutional reforms by peaceful means rather than by violent revolution. His fight for reforms by educating the Filipinos on what’s happening in the mother land led to his martyred death.

As he disclosed how much the country and its people had been suffering more than 300 years in the hands of colonizers, it profuse their anger and killed him. Meanwhile, Rizal’s death was not in vain; it also precipitated the Philippine revolution until the country was finally proclaimed free.

Rizal may not have reaped the fruit of his works while he was living. But, is not too late yet to pay something back for him today.

The last step in finding clues for the best gift is to know what he wished he had. For someone who lived and died for nationalism to be realized, the answer is not hard to find. Rizal didn’t have the opportunity to live once more to see if his fellow countrymen were taking good care of the motherland where countless lives were sacrificed.

If Rizal was alive, he would have wanted Filipinos to cherish the full liberty they have been gifted today. He fought for freedom but never had the

In terms of enjoying independence and practicing nationalism, Rizal would have so much to fight for in the present time. No matter how many times students are taught to appreciate how hard Filipinos fought for freedom in the past, it seems not enough for them to appreciate how lucky they are to be Filipino.

Foundations of a dream come true Way back in 1994, Dr. Catalino R. Dela Cruz, president of the Central Luzon State University Alumni Association Inc. (CLSUAAI), had his fondest dream of putting up another lodging facility that would accommodate the alumni and other guests as they arrive at the university.

Officers and members of CLSUAAI Board of Directors (BOD) shared the same dream.

After four years, the association started soliciting funds for the guestel.

The Alumni Center Building was then nearing its completion but because donors for the project directed their contributions to other projects such as scholarship or educational fund, the fund raising was not that successful.

Nevertheless, the BOD’s enthusiasm was prevailed.

In 2005 when the blueprint was completed, the fund amounted P600, 000. The estimated project cost was P18M as of 2006.

Violago of the Second District of Nueva Ecija led the ceremonial rites for the building of the guestel in April 2008, after the BOD decided to start the construction of the guestel with its limited fund of P1.5M. The first floor has fourteen rooms, a reception and information area, rest rooms, driveway and an adjacent staircase.

Batangas, a heavy rain occurred due to intertropical convergence zone which resulted in brown discoloration of the water as reported by the fisher folks living along the lake. According to Prof. Jose Abucay , a water quality and aquaculture expert at the College of Fisheries and Freshwater Aquaculture Center, CLSU, this was one of the main factors which triggered the mortality. Dr. Abucay believed that the unpredictable weather coupled by aquaculture mismanagement were the main culprit for the occurrence of fish kill.

“Let us first look back on the aquaculture practices in Batangas and Pangasinan.

Living in a country where social networking sites are more anticipated than Hollywood stars, we are fond of hearing a lot of updates about those. Now that we are living on this internetoriented generation, are we still in?

Some have thousands of friends on Facebook and hundreds of tweets on Twitter. Either way, these social networking sites are good channels of communication.

People can easily talk to their loved ones anywhere in the country and abroad as long as they have mutual sites they are registered in.

Dorsey was launched on July 2006. It offers microblogging service and social networking letting its users to send and receive messages called tweets. Users can follow other users. Sometimes, it is described as the “SMS of the Internet”.

Tumblr called a short form blog as tumblelog.

As in Twitter, users can do microblogging and can follow other users too. Tumblelogs can be customized by adding texts, images, videos, audio, quotes and links.

Among the social networking sites Facebook is the most popular. As of January 2011, the site has more than 600 million active users and still counting according to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Another adopted subculture of Hip-Hop

In fact we have our own version of battle rapping called Fliptop.

This is just like modern “balagtasan”. However, instead of poet, the two rappers recite the rhyming words in a capella. The rap

Fliptop is Battle Rapping or Battle Rhyming that puts two witty people in a competition that includes a lot of braggadocio – bragging and boasting. They insult each other with witty put-downs, punch lines, and friendly offenses words with powerful rhymes.

Rudiments of the Battle League Fliptop has four elements: emcees or the contestants, referee, judges, and the crowd.

The emcees or the contestants is the body of the competition. The two emcees compete for three rounds of one minute each. Each emcee must use his/ her rebuttal insulting and lyrical ability not only to shame his/ her opponent, but also to convince the audience that he/she is the better rapper. The emcee should maintain his/her temper in order to continue battling.

In the beginning of the rap battle, the referee tosses a coin, and one of the emcees calls it in the air. If he calls it right, then, he chooses who goes first.

The earliest battle according to YouTube happened in Grain Assault Event Quantum Cafe, in Makati City and in the middle of February, 2011.

Fuego, Protege, Datu and Cameltoe were the first emcees who battled in the rap arena. The tournament was uploaded in the YouTube and had hit a million of views.

Loonie versus Zaito, the most viewed battle in YouTube with a whooping over 10 million views. It has received also comments with spiky rhymes, too.

In addition, style was similar to Eminem’s movie “8 Mile”.

After the battle, competitors shake hands to show that the game was clear and done professionally and depicts sportsmanship after those insulting words and put-downs.

Natures of Fracas Battling comes in two, the freestyle and the so-called preparado.

In a freestyle battle the emcees perform rap with rhyme and tempo spontaneously while in a preparado, the contestant throws insults or answer back through rhyming rap.

Mas lumalakas nga ba ang loob ng mga sumasali at nananalo rito? O nagiging tila manikin lamang sila na dapat perpekto ang bawat bahagi ng katawan upang magustuhan ng mga mamimili?

Hindi ito upang batikusin ang mga organisasyon o iba pang sangay ng unibersidad na nag-oorganisa ng mga ganitong klase ng kompetisyon. Mahalaga lamang na ating sukatin kung may nakukuha nga bang benipisyo ang mga estudyante sa kanilang walang sawang suporta sa mga pageant sa loob ng kampus. Nakatutulong ba ito upang sila ay maging mas magaling na estudyante?

Sa bawat pagrampa ng mga kandidato sa entablado, tila inaabangan na sila ng mga manunuod na naglalaway sa kanilang mga “naggagandahang mukha at kaakit-akit na katawan.”

Ngunit

pagkatapos nito ay ano nga ba ang nangyayari sa kanila?

Marahil mapalad nga ang mga nagwawagi sa dami ng atensyon at paghangang kanilang natatanggap.

Noong nakaraang Disyembre, isang benifit concert ang idinaos sa University Auditorium para sa mga kababaihang nakatira sa Home For Girls Foundation sa Palayan City, Nueva Ecija. Mapupunta sana sa mga bata ang lahat ng kikitain ng concert para sa kanilang mga pangangailangan at selebrasyon sa Pasko.

Ang mga nakatira rito ay kadalasang nakaranas ng pisikal at sekswal na pangaabuso hindi lamang sa kamay ng ibang tao kundi maging sa kanilang sariling kapamilya.

Bientesingko pesos ang

halaga ng ticket ng naturang concert kung saan nagtanghal ang iba’t ibang cultural groups at koro sa unibersidad. Sulit na sulit sana at kung tutuusin, hamak na mas maliit na halaga ito kumpara sa presyo ng ticket sa mga pageant.

Subalit nakalulungkot mang isipin, hindi pumatok ang concert na iyon. Marami pang ibang gawain na makatutulong sana sa pagpapabuti at paghahasa ng talino at talento ng estudyante ang hindi nabibigyang pansin sa ating kampus.

Ang Intercollegiate LiteraryMusical o University Litmus ay hindi na rin natuloy nitong nagdaang taon.

Bukod sa kakulangan umano ng pondo ay wala rin naman daw regional competition na kailangang paghandaan.

Subalit preparasyon lamang ba para sa regional ang layunin ng pagdaraos ng Litmus?.

Ang College of Arts and Sciences at College of Education ay nagdaos na ng kanikanilang College Litmus upang paghandaan and Intercollegiate Litmus.

Ang mga nanalo sa College Litmus ang magiging kinatawan sana ng kanilang kolehiyo para sa huli.

Subalit ngayon ay nawala na ang pagasa ng mga nanalo na sila ay makasasali pa.

Taun-taon, nagiging oportunidad ito upang magpamalas ng iba’t ibang talento ang estudyante ng bawat kolehiyo pero sa taong Enigma, page 30

Ang huling pagbuslo ng “Clutch Shot” Buhay Collegian ... Championship Game. ... 00:15 segundo na lamang ang nalalabi. ... Huling taon ko sa koponan. ... Tabla ang laban, 98-98. ... Panalo o talo?

Parang basketball game rin pala ang buhay ko sa Collegian.

Gaya na lamang ngayon, kung puwede lamang ihinto ang oras o ‘di kaya naman ay huwag munang ibuslo ang bola upang lalo pa akong tumagal sa publikasyon.

Kaya lang hindi puwede, kailangan ko ring lisanin ang publikasyon at tahakin ang aking hinaharap.

Hindi naman siguro puwede na laging clutch shot na lamang – minsan tambak ka kaya hindi kailangan pang maging clutch ang iyong tira.

Ganyan sa basketball.

Para rin naman kasing basketball ang buhay ko sa Collegian.

Puwedeng panalo, puwede ring talo, puwede rin namang overtime o ‘di kaya naman ay foul. At nasubukan ko na yata ang lahat. Kaya’t sa huli kong kolum na ito ay hindi para sa mga propesor na nangaapi, hindi ito para sa mga estudyanteng naghahanap ng katarungan, hindi ito para sa mga fakulti na nagtatago ng kanilang kabalintunaan at hindi rin ito negatibo para sa iba na nagsilbing buhay

ng “Clutch Shot” sa apat na taon ko bilang kolumnista at limang taon bilang manunulat.

Buhay ko na ang maging isang aktibista pagdating sa kolum.

Naniniwala kasi akong wala akong karapatang isulat ang mga magagandang bagay sa unibersidad dahil hindi PR paper ang Collegian. Ako ay nagsusulat ng mga negatibong nararapat isulat para malaman ng lahat na may mga maling ginagawa ng ilang kawani, para maiayos o maitama ang mali.

Alangan namang itama mo pa ang tama na?

Kaya’t ngayon, magpasalamat kayong mga kunsintidor, suplado, mayayabang, mapang-api at demonyong tao na nasa loob ng unibersidad dahil maglalaho na ang mga pasaring sa inyo ng “Clutch Shot”.

Sa mga estudyante, pagbigyan n’yo na lamang ako ngayong maging-emo upang sariwain ang aking mga naranasan sa Kule na hindi ko naman talaga malilimutan.

Para malaman n’yo rin kung ano ang naging buhay ko at buhay ng isang manunulat ng Collegian. Kahit man sabihin na “intellectual masturbation” ito ni Sir Ben ay huling pagkakataon ko naman na po ito Sir (sabay tawa ng harharhar).

Narito ang limang taon kong karanasan

Collegian: 1. Pumasok ako sa Collegian noong 2006 at nagsilbing isa sa mga pinakamasipag na probationary writer pagdating sa pagdalo ng meetings. Naalala ko pa noon, ang stipend ko sa Collegian ay P22.50. Ayaw ko sanang tanggapin iyon noong una hindi dahil sa maliit kundi dahil hindi ko alam na may matatanggap pala kaming suweldo sa paggawa ng artikulo.

Pagkatapos nito, lumaki ang suweldo ko bigla dahil Intrams Issue ang ginawa namin.

Ako pa lamang kasi ang sports writer noon sa amin kaya marami talaga ang ipinagawa sa akin. Dito rin sa taong ito unang nawala ang pagkamahiyain ko.

Taong 2007 nang ako ay naging Sports Editor. Kaya’t tuwing dumarating ang Intrams ay tuwangtuwa ako – tiyak marami na naman akong magagawang artikulo. Iba kasi kapag Intrams, mamamalagi kami sa opisina nang halos isang linggo para makapaglabas ng arawang isyu. Sa panahon ding ito kami nagsasalu-salo sa aming kanya-kanyang luto.

Sa panahon ding ito nangyayari ang magandang pagsasamahan ng grupo dahil parepareho kaming walang pasok at ginagawa.

Mahirap ngunit masarap, ganyan

ang nararamdaman ko tuwing Intrams.

3. Disyembre 2008 noon nang mangyari ang isang insidenteng hindi kagustuhan ng lahat – namatay ang isa naming kasamahan sa publikasyon. Siya ang pinakamasipag sa kanilang grupo, pinakamabait at pinakakasundo ko noong panahong iyon.

Kaklase kasi siya ng aking kaibigan na mula rin sa aming bayan. Nahiya akong maglalabas noon dahil iba ang alam ng mga taong nangyari.

Iba-iba ang naging kuwento. Mahal ka namin, Almira, at tiyak masaya ka ngayon dahil ipinagpapatuloy namin ang nasimulan mo. Ganyan talaga ‘pag mahal mo ang pagsusulat. Sa panahon ding ito nagimbal ang aming buhay bilang isang masayang grupo – naglaho ang aming mga pangarap sa publikasyon dahil sa labis na kalungkutan at pagdadalamhati.

Though the BODs and other members are facing problems due to

According to the rules and regulations of SUC III, a student athlete will not be allowed

to play if s/he failed more than 50% of his/ her total units in the preceding semester.

To avoid such incidents, Form for Standing of each athlete will be accomplished by his/her instructor per subject. The said form contains the instructor’s report on the student athlete’s class attendance and the like.

Yes, we can The dream of putting CLSU in the upper rank in sports is not a fight for ISPEAR, coaches and athletes only. This dream is a fight for every member of this academe.

Initially this was dreamed by the ISPEAR director.

However, like the torch of sportsmanship, this dream has been passed on to the coaches, to the athletes, and then to us.

The question “what will be the rank of CLSU in this year’s SUC III Olympics after falling to 8th place in last year’s games given that the new ISPEAR head is not a man of sports but a man of psychology?”, is illogical because the battle is not his alone.

It is everybody’s battle, because the dream of CLSU grabbing a major post in the SUC III Olympics is everybody’s dream.

Now, do you think CLSU can win the top rank in the next SUC III games?

With everyone realizing this dream of putting this dream on their shoulders, yes we can.

Intrams set every Friday

By Edwin Respicio The 48th Annual Intramural Games will be held during Fridays July 29, August 5 and August 12, 2011.

This was the decision of the newlyappointed director of (Institute of Sports and Physical Education and Recreation) ISPEAR Mr. Jay Santos and the (Council of the Deans and Directors) CODD during their meeting.

According to Mr. Santos, the scheduling of Intrams on Fridays will prevent the disruptions of classes.

The NSTP classes on Fridays will be moved to Saturdays.

Last year’s finalist is automatically seeded

in both individual and term events.

Knock-out system shall be used in individual events. there will be two brackets needed in term events and round robin per bracket will be played.

Top two teams in each bracket will advance to the crossover semis and finalists will play a winnertake-all title game.

Last year’s demo game Karate-Do will not be an official game in this year’s Intrams because the SCUAA Council has not approved its inclusion in the regional game.

ISPEAR conducts CLSUnahan Marathon

By Mark Lyndon Antaran The Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (ISPEAR), headed by its new director Mr. Jay Santos, held the 1st CLSUnahan Marathon 2011 last June 11.

The said marathon was participated by around 300 runners from more than 700 registrants that came from Baguio, Pangasinan, Bulacan, Taguig, and CLSU according to Enrico Waing, CLSU athletics men coach and one of the organizers of the event.

Waing admitted that the targeted participants were 2,000 and the aim of the activity which is to raise funds for athletes failed as the collected registration fees were not enough to shoulder the cash prizes.

“Ok naman, masaya naman. Nasa majority ng administration natin ay very supportive naman sila and we are thankful din sa mga estudyante (na sumali),” said Waing.

“Siguro kung mas maaga sana naging preparation eh mas marami pa (sumali).”

Meanwhile, Precious Noelyn Venturina (CED1) grabbed the 1st place in the 3K women event and Me-ann Raras (S3) won 3rd place in the 10K women event.

Prizes for the said marathon were: 10K P3, 000 (1st), P2, 000 (2nd), P1, 000 (3rd); 5K– P2, 000 (1st), P1, 000 (2nd), P500 (3rd); and 3K P1, 000 (1st), P500 (2nd), P250 (3rd). A registration fee of P50 was collected for 3K and 1K event participants and P100 for 10K event runners.

CLSU karateka qualifies in nat’l karatedo training pool

A CLSU karateka marked her spot in the National Karatedo Training Pool to represent the country in this year’s South-East Asian (SEA) Games.

Mary Jane Gapuz, an AB Psychology student seized silver medal in the 60kg Division of the Individual Kumite during the Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission 1st Philippine National Games (PNG) held at Bacolod City last May 22-29.

“Thanks to God nakaabot po ako sa national games.

Napakahirap ng dinanas kong training tapos ayon nag-silver pa ako, talagang more on prayer before makisabak sa bugbugan,” said Gapuz.

“Thankful din po sa shihan (master) namin na walang sawang nagtuturo samin.

Sana makapaglaro ako sa SEA Games,” she added.

However, Gapuz also expressed her second thoughts of joining the national training pool as she will have to leave CLSU and stay in Manila for trainings.

Maganda sana ang konsepto ng debate sa loob ng kampus ngunit sa kabilang banda ay limitado lamang ang maaring makasali dito.

Bukod pa roon ay dati naman nang nagdaraos ng University Debate kasabay ng Litmus.

Ang pinakamasakit na nangyari ay hindi rin naman natuloy ang inaasahang debate kapalit ng Litmus.

Katunayan lang ng kakulangan ng suporta ng unibersidad sa mga gawain na maghahasa sana ng mga kakayanan

ng mga estudyante sa intelektwal na aspeto.

Habang patuloy naman ang pagsulpot ng mga pageant, iba-iba lamang ng kategorya at kadalasan, paulit-ulit na lamang ang mga sumasali.

Hindi naman masama ang pagsali sa ganitong klase ng kompetisyon at marami rin itong magandang naidudulot katulad ng pagtuklas sa ibang talento at pagtibay ng lakas ng loob. Subalit, lahat ng sobra ay naaabuso lalo na kung wala namang kinalaman ang pageant sa mga organisasyon na nagsasagawa nito.

Bilang pangalawang punong patnugot, malaki ang naitulong ni Simon sa publikasyon at sa akin. Isa siya sa pinakamagaling na manunulat ng Collegian.

Naiiba rin ang kanyang determinasyon.

Si Daniel ang cartoonist namin na kakaiba at walang sawang makipagpuyatan noong miyembro pa siya ng Kule.

The Paper was beautiful in the eyes of the Pen. Every inch of the Paper, the Pen secretly admired the wonderful creature.

One day, the Pen saw the Paper crying.

The Pen asked, “Why are you crying?”

The Paper answered, “Why? Look at me!

I am ugly. I am senseless and incomplete.”

The Pen frowned.

Because she could understand why the Paper claimed he did not possess the beauty he had.

“But, you are beautiful,” she said.

The Paper did not believe the Pen. “Is there anything beautiful In an incomplete creature? See, I am a tabula rasa. I am blank.

A blank paper…

A blank paper has no meaning.

A blank paper has no essence.

The Paper cried.

Is the Pen just trying to console him?

Is the Pen saying the truth?

She could be blind.

“Will you please write any word or phrase on me?

So I will not be a meaningless paper.

So I can have my own essence.

Will you complete my incomplete being?”

“Yes, I will,” said the paper.

“But in one condition, I will Write only one letter for eight days.

And for each day, let me show you How beautiful you are.

Stay with me.”

Days passed and the Paper and the Pen became inseparable.

The once sad Paper became the most vivid Creature that ever lived in the world of ideas.

However, the Paper was forbidden to look at the letters the Pen

was writing at him.

He could only see it on the eight day.

And, the eighth day came.

“This is the last day.

You and I will share laughter and tears.

This is the last day that there will be me in you and you in me,” said the Pen to the Paper amidst of falling tears.

The Paper smiled and said, “No… I will stay by your side even after this day.

We are one.

You and me - two creatures that became one.”

“Yes, we are one.

I give my life to complete your life.

This is the last day.

The final day.

And on this day, I will write the most important letter I’ve ever known,” answered the Pen. “What is it?” asked the Paper.

The Pen smiled and said, “U” The Paper closed his eyes while the Pen was writing the last letter to him. The Pen may not see it but he now feels beautiful and complete. The Pen has completed him.

When the Pen stopped writing the letter, the Paper kept on closing his eyes while talking to the Pen, “You know, even without these words written on me, I feel complete…

I feel beautiful. Your love makes me complete, makes me feel beautiful. I no longer need these words to make me smile. All I need is you.”

The Pen did not respond.

The Paper continued, “Pen… Answer me please. Can you hear it?

All I need is you. I love you, Pen.”

Again, the Pen did not respond.

The Paper opened his eyes and, he saw the Pen, lying on the floor – inkless.

The Paper realized that the Pen is dead.

She used her remaining ink to write on the Paper, as he had requested, to give meaning to his tabula rasa. To complete his life…to make him beautiful.

The Pen told the Paper that he can look at the letters she wrote on him the very moment the last letter was written on the eighth day.

The Paper slowly walked near the mirror.

Without enthusiasm, he lifted his eyes and looked at his body. The former tabula rasa is now the grave of the Pen’s ink.

The Paper once again cried when he saw the letters the Pen had written to him.

The letters she wrote each day for eight days is, “I L O V E Y O U,” -to ESI, for you i’ll be a pen...

Ang mundo sa labas ng kahon

las-dos ng madaling araw.

Pagal ang katawan at namamanhid na ang mga daliri, binigyang-laya ko ang sariling panandaliang humimlay sa ‘di kalambutang kama. Payak at maagiw pang kisame ang tumambad sa aking paningin. Madilim na sa kuwarto. Tanging ang malamlam na ilaw lamang na nagmumula sa kompyuter ang pinagmumulan ng liwanag. Napabaling ako sa kapatid kong mahimbing na sa pagkakatulog. Buti pa siya, sa isip-isip ko. Walang masyadong inaasahan sa kanya. Waring kung ano lamang ang marating niya sa buhay ay tatanggapin sa aming pamilya. Malayungmalayo sa inaasahan para sa akin.

Sa tuwing sumasagi sa isipan ko ito, parang gusto kong sisihin ang sarili ko. Sana pala, hindi na lamang ako nagpakitanggilas sa aking pag-aaral simula pagkabata. Para kahit papaano, hindi sa akin bumagsak lahat ng responsibilidad na i-aahon ang buhay namin sa kinalugmukang kahirapan at panghahamak ng ilang kamag-anak na naturingan.

Pero alam ko namang mali iyon. Sino pa nga ba ang aasahan ng aming mga magulang na bumago sa takbo ng gulong ng aming kapalaran? Isa pa, naiintindihan ko rin naman ang dahilan nila sa pambubuyo sa amin na mag-aral nang mabuti. Gusto

lamang nilang gumawa kami ng paraan na lihisan na ang daang tinahak nila na ngayon nga ay labis na kanilang pinagsisisihan.

Rinig na rinig ko pa rin ang halakhakan at kantiyawan ng mga lasing sa kapitbahay.

Sa wari ko’y sanay na ang mga asawa’t pamilya ng mga ito na ang haligi ng kanilang tahanan ay nakikipag-inuman pa kahit sa ganitong oras.

Naalala ko, wala pa rin pala ang haligi ng tahanan namin.

“Tsk. Tsk. Tsk…” napapapalatak akong mariing hinilot ang kumikirot na sentido. Wala pa ako sa kalagitnaan man lang ng aking isinusulat. Nasanay kasi akong nasa harapan ko na ang lahat ng impormasyong kailangan ko upang makapagsulat.

Pero isa sa mga natutunan ko simula ng mag-kolehiyo ay ang paghihirap na maghanap sa sarili kong paraan. Bagay na labis kong ipagpapasalamat sapagkat alam kong magagamit ko itong matibay na pundasyon sa pagharap sa tunay na laban ng buhay.

Sa takbo ng buhay namin ngayon, unti-unti kong napapatunayan na maging ang pinakamalapit na taong inaasahan mong tutulong sa iyo ay darating din sa puntong mapapagod din sila.

Wala ka nang magagawa pa kundi ang sarili mo ang tanging sandalan o tanggaping habang buhay ka na lamang hahamakin ng iba dahil sa kawalan ng silbi.

Ngunit bakit ganoon?

Tumanda yata ako nang paurong… Waring wala akong natutunan sa aking pagtanda. Ano nga ba ang mga leksyon na tumimo sa bao ng aking utak?

Hindi ko malilimutan ang unang pagkakataon na nakatikim ako kay “Sir Idol” ng mahiwaga niyang pangaral na talaga namang humahagupit. Ang leksyong sana’y sa tahanan pa lamang namin ay natutunan ko na pero heto, sa kanya ko pa patuloy na natututunan.

Hindi maaaring wala akong aral na mapupulot sa tuwing nagkakaroon ako ng pagkakataong makausap siya. Isa nga siyang mentor.

Palagi niyang idinidikdik sa utak kong pasaway na ang lahat ng problema ay hinaharap at hindi tinatakbuhan.

“Kung hindi mo magagawang tulungan ang iyong sarili, paano ka pa matutulungan ng iba?
