OF BOOKS NOTE Reviewed By Larry Cox© Father of Route 66: The Story of Cy Avery By Susan Croce Kelly (University of Oklahoma Press, hardcover, $24.95)

Cy Avery was a Tulsa, Okla.-based oilman and real-estate investor. He also was a visionary. Before he cobbled together plans for a national highway that would stretch almost 2,500 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles, traveling through most states was a challenge, since few roads were even paved. The story of Avery and Route 66, the legendary “Mother Road” he helped to build, is fascinating because it almost didn’t happen. Avery, who had moved to Oklahoma as a teenager in a covered wagon, discovered at an early age that travelers often were confronted by “the mighty monarch mud.” As soon as he became an adult, he began his fight for better roads, not just in Oklahoma, but throughout the country. Getting approval and funds to build the national highway was not easy. For example, he met with opposition by members of Oklahoma’s Klu Klux Klan and had a dustup with the then-governor of Kentucky over the numbering of the highway. Even the route proved controversial when states and towns bypassed by the road began to protest. Route 66 was finally established in 1926. By the Depression era it had become a way West. Avery’s Route 66 would become a fixture in the imagination of not just America but of the world, and it would help bring about another iconic road — the Interstate Highway System of the 1950s. C OUCH THEATRE By Sam Struckhoff© PICKS OF THE MONTH These hits are now available on DVD and Blu-ray. “The Theory of Everything” (PG-13) — Renowned scientist Stephen Hawking is best known as the man who revolutionized the way we think about time and space. This biopic focuses primarily on the romance between two brilliant Cambridge students — Hawking (Eddie Redmayne, who won best actor at this year’s Academy Awards) and his first wife, Jane (Felicity Jones) — and their struggle as Hawking’s health begins to decline. By keeping the film centered on this story of love and the hardships that assail it, “The Theory of Everything” has more to say about human emotion than it does about black holes. “Beyond the Lights” (R) — This touching romance follows Noni (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a pop singer about to take over the charts with her astounding voice and full-scale sex appeal. Trouble is, stardom and objectification aren’t all Noni was told they would be by her overbearing stage mom. When things seem darkest and Noni can’t take it anymore, she’s rescued by a hunky, virtuous cop named Kaz. Even when the plot wears thin, the performances and directing give it gravity it needs. Grand Season Business Profile

Communication, Service and High-Quality Craftsmanship Reinforce Albrecht and Son By Pamela Holechek© An early retirement, along with a move to Arizona from Wisconsin, helped form the creation of Albrecht and Son Painting, Remodeling and Construction. Once here in the Northwest Valley, joining his siblings, Thomas Albrecht Sr. unexpectedly broke from leisurely tradition and picked up his tools again. He soon encouraged his son Thomas Albrecht Jr. and his family to move here from Chicago and establish a business. “My father, a former tradesman and painter, taught me and my wife, Elizabeth, how to run a successful business,” says Thomas Jr. of his father and mentor, Thomas Sr., now deceased. “He was a good teacher and had great ideas.” The family-owned and operated Albrecht and Son was launched in 1989. Thomas attributes the company’s staying power of 26 years to superior “communication and service, along with high-quality, hands-on, honest work.” Thomas describes Albrecht and Son as a custom remodeling company. “Our people are employed by Albrecht and Son, not by a union,” he says. “We don’t piecework anything. We are contractors who are licensed, bonded and insured with liability insurance.” In addition to craftsmen, the company maintains a complete office staff, a design expert, project managers and superintendents, ensuring each job is performed in the most professional and timely manner possible. “We are the leading general contractor for residential remodels in the Northwest Valley,” says Thomas, who is also Albrecht and Son’s chief estimator. “And about 90 per-

6

The Albrecht and Son Painting, Remodeling and Construction team gathers for a photo. Pictured from left are Bruce Wenzel, Joe Brown, owner Thomas Albrecht Jr. and Dana Normand. cent of our business comes from former customers and referrals.” Assuredly, Albrecht and Son can assist clients who love their homes but want to put a more personal style into its design. Endless options are available in the company’s design showroom, where staff can share their knowledge of products and guide homeowners through every step of the remodeling process. From small to large jobs, Albrecht and Son can remodel kitchens and baths — floor to ceiling — including tile work, flooring, drywall, painting, wall coverings, lighting, vanities, tubs and showers. Additionally, new custom cabinets can be installed, or existing cabinets can be refaced, restained or painted to achieve a new look. To boost energy efficiency and add value to a home, Albrecht and Son’s longtime staff can replace or upgrade

windows and doors. They can also expand interior spaces with room additions, or revive a home with custom interior and exterior paint. Broad expertise and exacting work set Albrecht and Son apart from other businesses that offer similar services, claims Thomas. “We exceed industry standards, offering a warranty that extends beyond the Registrar of Contractors’ recommended two years,” he says. For more than 26 years, Thomas notes that he, his family and the staff at Albrecht and Son have made it a priority to build a great rapport within the community they serve. “Other companies have just popped up during good times and then folded,” he says. “We have continued our commitment of providing precise workmanship and unwavering support.” The result of this dedication has earned Albrecht and Son partnerships with Sun City

West’s PORA, Sun City, Sun City Grand, Youngtown, Surprise, Peoria and other area homeowners associations and chambers of commerce. Another impressive endorsement comes from the Better Business Bureau of Arizona in the form of an A-Plus rating. Community support for Albrecht and Son reaches farther. The team often provides time and materials to help Valley nonprofit organizations. One extraordinary alliance is the company’s tribute to veterans, by constructing safe, barrier-free conditions in their homes. To fully experience the extensive services of Albrecht and Son, make an appointment for a free consultation by calling 623-933-4312, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Customers are also encouraged to visit their website at www.albrechtandson.com, which offers a link to contact them via email.

Improve Your Vision With Proper Nutrition Here’s food for thought: Just as specific foods and nutritional supplements have value in treating specific diseases, some can also encourage eye health. Eating right can help you save your own sight. Here are some suggestions from ophthalmologist Dr. Rob Abel, author of “The Eye Care Revolution.” • Cold water fish (sardines, cod, mackerel, tuna) are an excellent source of DHA, for structural support to cell membranes and to treat dry eyes and macular degeneration. • Spinach, kale and green leafy vegetables are rich in carotenoids, especially lutein and zeaxanthin, to protect against sun damage. • Eggs contain cysteine, sulfur, lecithin, amino acids and lutein. Sulfur protects against cataract formation. • Garlic, onions and shallots are also rich in sulfur, necessary for glutathione, an important antioxidant for the lens. • Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins A, C, E and beta-carotene. Yellow and orange vegetables, such as carrots and squash, are important for daytime vision. • Wine has many important nutrients to protect the heart, vision and blood flow. • Nuts and berries are nature’s most concentrated food sources. Grains such as flaxseed are high in the beneficial omega-3 fatty acids, which help lower cholesterol and stabilize cell membranes. • Extra-virgin olive oil is a healthy alternative to butter and margarine. In addition, Dr. Abel suggests you drink six 8-ounce glasses of filtered water every day as water helps create the fluid in your eyes.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

You can even put in snippets of text from your email communications to see if a pattern shows up. Put in the name and click “Images” to see if you spot familiar pictures. Forget About Fad Diets and Focus on Health If you recently committed to managing your weight or dieting, it may be time to change your approach. For long-term results, ditch fad dieting and adopt a balanced approach to eating with a focus on healthy foods. Being healthy isn’t just about fitting into your jeans. According to a recent national survey, there are many reasons why women consider dieting: 68 percent want to improve their health, 51 percent want to look their best, and 39 percent want to have more energy. With these goals in mind, it may not come as a surprise that survey participants reported being on an average of nine diets in their lifetimes. In fact, 76 percent of American women who have dieted admit to having tried a fad diet. However, nearly two out of three women believe fad diets are difficult to maintain. What’s more, these diets may even be unhealthy, according to the Weight-control Information Network (WIN). Some fad diets fail to provide your body with the nutrients your body needs. In addition, sustained rapid weight loss can increase your risk of gallbladder problems, and heart problems

can result from consuming too few calories for too long. To maintain a healthy weight and healthier lifestyle, try these healthy habits: • Choose healthy foods, with a diet rich in fruits and veggies. • Manage calorie intake and portion size. Keep on track by using a smaller plate, paying close attention to nutrition labels and weighing portions on a scale. • Make exercise part of your daily life. Even activities such as gardening or taking the stairs can make a difference. Managing your metabolism — how your body uses calories — is another key to healthy eating. Eating foods that deliver plenty of protein and fiber are all keys to maximizing your metabolism.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You need to be certain that all the right conditions are in place before you take that first step. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Be careful not to get involved in other people’s disputes unless you know the facts behind the disagreements. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You still need to be careful about how you’re going to spend those energy reserves you finally got around to restoring. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your aspect continues to favor travel — alone or with that special person. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Those so-called golden opportunities that continue to dazzle the Lion still need to be carefully checked out. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Changes at the workplace could make it more difficult to do things the way you prefer. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might want to check out the explanation you were given for a sudden shift in your duties. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Having confidence in your abilities is important, especially when you could be facing a new challenge. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A new work-related opportunity might not be all that it seems. For affordable fun and entertainment, place your bets at Turf Paradise. In 1954, Phoenix businessman Walter Cluer purchased 1,400 acres in North Phoenix to build a first-class race track in the Valley. Turf Paradise opened two years later at 19th Avenue and Bell Road in Phoenix, making history as the first organized professional sports franchise in Arizona. In 2000, local businessman Jerry Simms purchased Turf Paradise, subsequently investing $5 million in renovating the track and clubhouse. Currently, Turf Paradise is a thoroughbred and quarter horse racetrack with one of the longest racing seasons in the U.S. The track length is a seven-furlong infield turf course with a one-mile and one-eighth chute.

If you’ve been getting ready to file a paper benefit claim with the Department of Veterans Affairs, a deadline is looming that will force you to make a change. The VA has tried recently to go paperless, meaning that veterans open and fill out a claim online. The department says the change will speeds things up. The effective date becomes the date the file is first opened electronically, with one year to finish the details. If you’ve wanted to stay with the old-school method and submit your claims via paper (even a letter or back of an envelope would suffice), you’ve been able to do that, with the effective date when your file is deemed complete. Starting March 24, though, the VA is limiting your options. You can file online, or you can complete one of two paper forms. Form 21-0966 will be required as your intent to file. This is the first step while you gather the balance of your supporting information. Then use Form 21-526EZ for officially filing your claim. That’s it, period. If you don’t follow the new rules, your claim can languish and you’ll lose benefit time because nothing happens until you use the correct form, which is Form 21-0966. That one starts the clock running. And no, don’t expect the VA to send you the right form, at least not quickly. If you don’t own or use a computer, find someone who can help you file your claim electronically. Or talk to your veteran service organization. You might even get your library to pull up the form and print out a few for you. Just put Form 21-0966 in the Internet search box.

What’s the Deal With Sprouted Grains? Sprouted grains have been popular among health food enthusiasts for years, but they’ve only recently hit the mainstream, popping up in breads and cereals. They have loads of nutritional benefits and are increasingly easy to find. But what exactly are sprouted grains? A sprouted grain is the beginning of a grain seed’s life cycle, before it becomes a mature plant. Given just the right temperature and moisture conditions, the outer layer will split open and a young shoot will sprout out of the grain, releasing vital nutrients and enzymes stored inside. Grain seeds are similar to long-term storage packages, designed to keep their goodness locked inside until conditions are right to grow a new plant. According to the Whole Grains Council, the sprouting process can increase the amount and availability of some vitamins (notably vitamin C) and minerals, making sprouted grains a potential nutrition powerhouse. “Sprouted grains are a delicious way to add fiber and essential minerals such as iron, zinc or magnesium to your diet,” says Toby Amidor, a New York-based dietitian. “They aren’t just for the serious health food aficionados anymore — many new packaged foods feature these unique and nutritious grains.” Eating real, pure foods is at the core of a healthy lifestyle. By taking a closer look at packaging while at the grocery store, you can find items made with wholesome ingredients and positive benefits. These days, many grocery stores carry a variety of nutritious options on their shelves as well.

Hi, I'm Rick Lane, owner of "Save On Services". My brother, Marcus, and I answer our own phones and perform all repairs so that we know the WORK IS DONE RIGHT and you're treated as a VALUED CUSTOMER. We have no warehouse, low advertising costs and no employees, so we can offer you the LOWEST PRICES POSSIBLE and a LIFETIME WARRANTY ON ALL PARTS AND LABOR. Instead of worrying, just call us (Rick or Marcus!) right now. Frankly, most garage door problems are easier to repair and less costly than you might think. And if we don't have an inexpensive solution, we'll direct you to the right place. However, we can probably help you right away with advice, pricing questions, parts, service and repairs. If you're eager to get the door working again there's no problem we can't fix the same day you call. But no matter what the problem is, we can give you good advice.

Here’s some advice…BEWARE! Some companies have technicians who are paid a commission and have to charge more to make a paycheck.

When you hear prices for springs start at $45 to $120 — LOOK OUT! There will be more hidden charges.

NTIQUE ANSWERS By Larry Cox©

Q: I began collecting turnof-the-century souvenir tumblers several years ago. I now have about three dozen pieces and wonder if they will ever increase in value. They seem to sell in the $10 to $25 range, the same as when I first began collecting. — Paula, Surprise, Ariz. A: Your pieces sound like examples of flashing. According to “Glass A to Z” by David Shotwell, this type of glass is achieved when a thin layer of glass — usually colored — is applied over one that is clear or lightly tinted. The process involves dipping the object into molten glass, a process quite different from that of making cased or overlay glass, which requires a thicker layer. Most of the pieces I’ve seen are either amber or ruby color, and as you indicated, almost all have been souvenir pieces. In my personal collection, I have a small toothpick holder in

ruby glass that has the inscription “From Cora and Clem ... World’s Fair 1904.” This is fairly typical. Since it is a World’s Fair item, it might be worth a little more than many of the others I’ve seen in shop and at antiques malls. Q: I love older paperbacks and have been collecting them for at least 20 years. Most of the ones in my collection were purchased at garage sales and at flea markets for less than a dollar each. There is one I am especially interested about, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby,” the Armed Service Edition No. 862. — Charlie, Palm Desert, Calif. A: The Armed Service Editions are difficult to date. I suspect the one you have was issued in about 1945 or 1946. Your paperback is valued in the $45 to $325 range, again, depending on condition. Q: I have a copy of News-

week, which was the commemorative issue published after the death of Lady Diana. It is still sealed and was never opened. How much is it worth? — Mary, DeLand, Fla. A: I contacted several magazine collectors, and they seem to agree that your issue of Newsweek would sell in the $10 to $15 range. Keep in mind that millions of copies of that issue were printed. Q: I have a set of five stonecraft mixing bowls. Are they worth keeping? — Susan, Peoria, Ariz. A: Your mixing bowls, also called pink and blue because of their color, were made by McCoy and are very collectible. In fact, in recent years I have seen mixing bowls double and triple in price at most of the antique malls and shops I have visited. Your McCoy set was made during the 1970s and is valued at about $250, according to Mark Moran, who’s the author of “Warman’s McCoy Pottery.” Q: I have a set of egg cups

that are marked “Union Pacific.” A railroad buff has told me the pattern is Desert Flower. — Sam, Morgantown, W.Va. A: Egg cups have become one of the most popular collectibles in recent years. Prices can range from inexpensive to many thousands of dollars. Your Union Pacific set is probably worth about $90. Keep Your Money Safe When Banking Online The more consumers do business online for the convenience, the more opportunities there are for scams to increase. Of all the places online to do business, your banking can be the most worrisome when it comes to safety. The FDIC has a comprehensive website that contains everything you need to know and the steps to take to keep your money safe. Among the highlights: • Confirm that your bank is legitimate and your deposits insured. Check the “About Us” portion of the bank’s website to look for information about FDIC insurance coverage. Look for the FDIC logo and take the additional step of checking the FDIC website to be sure your bank is listed as covered. Beware of fake websites that mimic your bank’s name; type the name in correctly and verify you’re on the right site before you input any personal data. • Keep your information private: Since 2001, a bank is required to give you its privacy policy that will let you know who it might share your information with (for example, with product marketing), what information it keeps on file,

When banking online, it can be a good idea to change your password periodically.

and what it might share. Read the leaflet to understand where your information might end up, and opt out if you wish. This information applies if you do banking online. Ask if your bank tracks you online, and make use of your browser settings to be sure any tracking software is blocked. When it comes to passwords, don’t use an easy one, and change it periodically just to be sure it hasn’t been hacked. • Know where to go for assistance: Start with your own bank if you have questions. If you have questions about coverage, call the FDIC’s Division of Compliance and Consumer Affairs at 877-275-3342.

Is Your Vehicle a Mean, Green Driving Machine? You may take steps to reduce your environmental impact through the products you purchase and simple household actions, such as recycling — but what about the vehicle you drive? “Basic vehicle maintenance, as well as a few helpful driving tricks, can go a long way toward protecting the environment, extending vehicle life and improving fuel economy,” said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council. Here are some ways to turn your vehicle into a mean, green driving machine — for your wallet and the environment. • Follow a vehicle service schedule including fuel-saving steps like keeping tires properly inflated, replacing air filters regularly and using the correct motor oil.

Removing excess items from your car’s trunk could increase gas mileage.

• Lighten the load by getting the junk out of the trunk and the excessive things out of your car. Extra items weigh the vehicle down and cause an increase in gas usage. • Check your vehicle’s gas cap and avoid unnecessary fillups. Loose, damaged or missing gas caps cause millions of gallons of gas to evaporate into the air every year. Topping off your gas tank when filling up your car can also release harmful vapors into the air.

The DASH diet (which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) was developed through research funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health as a way to lower blood pressure and reduce the use of medication. Studies dating back to its inception in 1993 show that it’s an effective way to lose weight and reduce the risk of many diseases. This recipe for trout Veracruz is based on a Mexican seafood favorite from the port city of Veracruz. It’s a colorful, nutrition-packed, one-skillet meal that is easy to prepare and fits in beautifully with the DASH diet regimen. Job Growth Remains Solid The first set of employment numbers for 2015 picked up where 2014 ended, with continued solid job creation. The economy added 257,000 jobs in January, which was above the expected increase of 228,000, according to Bloomberg. Previous months’ numbers were also revised higher, totaling more than 3.1 million jobs created in 2014. In addition, the unemployment rate increased modestly to 5.7 percent from 5.6 percent as more unemployed workers began looking for jobs again. U.S. Economic Growth Continues The past several months have continued to show signs of stronger economic growth: • Job growth has been above 200,000 for 11 consecutive months, the longest stretch since 1994.

• Auto sales hit the strongest level since 2006, with solid growth to begin 2015. • Consumer confidence remains at its highest level since 2007. • Low oil prices are good news for consumers and many companies. The U.S. economy continues to show modest signs of accelerating growth, which should continue to support stocks. Interest Rates Remain Low The Federal Reserve (Fed) has indicated it’s not in a hurry to increase short-term interest rates due to current low inflation and modest wage growth. However, we think long-term rates are likely to increase prior to the Fed increasing short-term rates. Don’t wait for the Fed to act — prepare by owning a laddered fixed-income portfolio

Prepare Your Portfolio for Increased Volatility Market volatility has increased so far in 2015 with significant up-and-down swings in the U.S. stock markets. Take these steps to make sure your portfolio is prepared: • Review your specific goals and risk tolerance to ensure you have an appropri-

ate mix of stocks and bonds. • Rebalance your portfolio to the appropriate investment mix, if needed. This may mean reducing your exposure to stocks after strong performance over the past several years. • Consider adding quality investments at lower prices during market pullbacks. As we’ve seen this year, bonds and stocks frequently move in opposite directions, which is why that mix is one of your most important investment decisions. Also look for opportunities in international stocks, intermediate-term bonds and stocks of companies positioned to benefit from lower energy prices. That way, your investments are likely to perform differently during various market conditions, improving your portfolio’s diversification. HERE’S A TIP

By JoAnn Derson©

If you have trouble threading a needle because the fibers seem to go in all directions, stiffen the end of thread with hairspray before threading a needle. ••• Tongs lost their clip? Use the rubber band from a bunch of broccoli to hold the ends together in storage. ••• Use an old vegetable peeler in the shop to sharpen pencils. ••• Wrap the metal collar of your paintbrush with masking tape before painting. Then you can peel it off and there’s no stuck-on paint. ••• Store plastic wrap in the refrigerator, or even the freezer, to keep it from sticking to itself. ••• If your lunchbox could be fresher, spray a piece of bread with vinegar and zip it up in your lunchbox overnight to clear out smells. ••• Pinprick hole in your rubber glove? Put the glove on and paint the hole with nail polish. It’ll seal up a small hole, making the glove usable again. ••• If your dog likes a treat of moistened dry food from time to time, use the water from cooking vegetables. It has a bit of flavor and some vitamins, too. ••• Fresh spices all year long? Yes, please. Find your sunniest window, and plant a little herb garden indoors. You will have a nonstop supply of fresh parsley, cilantro, basil, etc. ••• Extend the life of your smartphone battery by turning off the GPS function of apps that use it in the background, like running apps and social media apps. Turn on WiFi for better battery life as well.

Help Put an End to Pet Overpopulation Spaying or neutering your cat is considered one of the most effective ways to reduce pet overpopulation. That’s the word from experts such as the American Veterinary Medical Association. They also say the procedure is safe for kittens as young as 8 to 10 weeks old. In addition to pet population control, spaying a female cat before her first heat cycle amplifies a number of health benefits. It reduces the risk of certain mammary and reproductive cancers, as well as potentially fatal infections. Additional benefits include: • Reduced aggression: Cats that have been spayed or neutered are less aggressive than unaltered pets. This leads to fewer fights, which results in a lower risk of con-

tracting contagious diseases and lower vet bills. • Less wandering: Cats that aren’t fixed are more likely to stray from home, especially when they are in heat and searching for a mate. Spaying and neutering reduces this urge and keeps your pet close to home. • Less marking: Cats often “claim” their territory by marking with urine — even if that “territory” is your couch. After a spay/neuter procedure, cats become much less territorial, and this behavior decreases dramatically. Many believe late winter and early spring are the most effective times to spay your cat. That’s because by spaying a cat in advance of its heat cycle, it’s possible to prevent unwanted litters from being born.

Choose The Right Window When it comes to remodeling your kitchen you must consider many aspects — cabinets, counters, floors and appliances — but you might not have thought about windows. According to Remodeling.com’s 2015 Cost vs. Value Report, window replacement provides a good return on investment compared to other replacement projects, increasing the value of your home. Here are three key elements to keep in mind when choosing a window for your kitchen: 1. Style: Kitchen windows are often placed above counters or sinks, making them hard to reach and prone to moisture. Choose a window style that is easy to open and close, such as an awning, sliding or casement. 2. Material type: With window placement above counters or sinks, moisture and staining can occur, so choosing an easy-to-clean material like vinyl or fiberglass, is equally important. Fiberglass windows can withstand extreme heat and cold, are energy efficient and can have the same quality look of painted wood. Vinyl windows are easy to care

for, don’t require painting or staining, and stay looking great for years. However, if wood makes more sense for you and the style of your home, then make sure to select a finish that will hold up against stains and moisture. 3. Features and options: Whether your new kitchen is traditional, modern or rustic, your new windows should complement the space. Window designs offer a variety of features including colors, hardware and grilles.

Study: Half of Hospital Visits Can Be Prevented About half of all hospital visits among older Americans could be prevented, according to a new study of nurses who work primarily with seniors. There are five simple steps that can help reduce the potential risk that an older adult will end up in the hospital. He or she should be sure to: 1. Follow doctors’ orders: Two in five nurses say one of the easiest ways to help prevent hospitalization is to follow doctors’ orders. 2. Not ignore symptoms: It’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to abnormal aches and pains. Yet 27.5 percent of the nurses surveyed said waiting too long to see a doctor is the most common thing seniors do that puts them at risk. 3. Take proper precautions to reduce risks of falls and accidents, including balance exer-

cises, hand-rails and proper lighting. 4. Stay active physically and mentally. 5. Maintain a healthy, balanced diet. Most important, however, according to respondents, is family. Ninety-nine percent of nurses polled said the role that families play in keeping seniors out of the hospital is just as important as that of the medical community. Fewer than half of seniors have a medical advocate, however, a role primarily filled by family members.

Make Your Concrete Surfaces Stand Out With Acrylic Decking of Arizona By Heather Wright Schlichting© Did you know that enhancing your home’s driveway and walkway, as well as modernizing the deck of your pool, not only makes your home stand out among other houses in your neighborhood but also increases its value? Whether you’re looking to update your patio, pool deck or any concrete surface, Acrylic Decking of Arizona can transform your home’s indoor or outdoor space into a stunning work of art. “If we can’t do a job right, we won’t do it,” says owner R.W. “Dick” Lane. Shortly after moving from Chicago to Surprise in 1999, Lane had Kool Deck concrete topping installed on his patio. That’s when he met Isabel Ramirez, a foreman for Shasta Pools. Lane became instantly impressed by Ramirez’s work ethic and concrete coating experience. With some knowledge of the concrete business himself, Lane suggested that Ramirez venture out with him as his salesman for his new company, Acrylic Decking. Ramirez agreed and later trained his brother Jaime to join the company, as well. Using the same craftsmen who’ve been with Lane since Acrylic Decking’s beginning, the business has become a family affair. Together, they have been exceeding customer expectations and creating beautiful spaces for homeowners in the Northwest Valley for over 15 years. With more than 75 percent of Acrylic Decking’s business coming from customer referrals, the company’s success, says Lane, is due to creative design, quality products, personal attention and experienced installers. “We have only one thing to sell and that

56

is our expertise,” he notes. Acrylic Decking also emphasizes customer service. Team members can come directly to you to help determine what you’re looking to accomplish and the materials you want to use, as well as provide the best estimate. “With no deposit required upfront, we will walk you through the design phase by utilizing a sample board featuring colors from your house, trim and boulders, gravel or other important architectural elements, to show you exactly how the finished job will look,” says Lane. “I will return to your home with our crew at the start of the project and maintain contact with you till the very end to assure you’re satisfied.” Acrylic Decking only uses top quality acrylic cement, paint and sealers that remain cool to the touch, slip-free and stain resistant. “We don’t use poly-type sealers because they can be difficult to repair,” says Lane. “More than 50 percent of our time is spent utilizing dustless equipment to grind off an old epoxy finish in order to apply a newer, more durable acrylic surface. We stand by the quality of our materials, and depending on sun exposure, acrylic coatings can last between five and 10 years.” Acrylic Decking also stands by their preference to use acrylic coating to create a true Kool Deck surface. “Kool Decks offer two completely separate levels of surface, creating not only design but function,” says Lane. “When walking on a hot Kool Deck, you’re only walking on the high spots — all the rest is on the bottom and contains an air cushion that results in a 20- to 30-degree differential in the temperature of the cement.

Whether you’re looking to update your patio, pool deck or any concrete surface, Acrylic Decking of Arizona can transform your home’s indoor or outdoor space into a stunning work of art. It’s the reason our acrylic coating is always used around swimming pools. Not only is it cooler to the feel, but it’s also non-slippery, making it the ideal surface to keep your family safe.” What sets Acrylic Decking of Arizona apart from their competitors is their faux flagstone, says Lane. This involves a custom process where each stone is individually painted and hand cut to create the elegant look of real flagstone at an affordable price. They can customize colors so that customers can choose the hues and designs that best suit them, and they can match the stones with existing flagstone already in the home to maintain a consistent look, with custom grout colors to match.

“Our installation teams take great pride in the professionalism of their work,” says Lane. “The process of applying the coating is critical, and this is where more than 15 years of experience counts the most.” That attention to detail and exceeding their customers’ expectations has helped Acrylic Decking of Arizona earn a sterling record with the Better Business Bureau of Central Arizona. They’ve been an accredited Better Business Bureau company since 2005. For a free estimate on concrete coating work for your home, call Acrylic Decking of Arizona today at 623-9753666 or 623-810-9475. For Senior Women, Moderate Exercise is OK By Matilda Charles© This will be good news for some seniors: They might not need as much exercise. Research from the U.K. seeks to aim senior women more toward moderate exercise. This smaller study was part of an ongoing long-term study of 1.1 million women going

back to 1998. At that time they were asked about how many hours they spent at various activities, and their health has been followed since then. The results are promising for those who’d rather not run five miles a day or work out at the gym with weights. The women who reported mod-

erate amounts of exercise ended up with significantly lower risks of cerebrovascular, venous thromboembolic or coronary heart disease events. In this case, “moderate” means enough activity to increase the heart rate or cause sweating two or three days a week. And seniors don’t need equipment or lots of time, contrary to previous studies that said 30 minutes of exercise five days a week is necessary. In this study, more frequent

exercise didn’t mean lower risks — there was little added benefit seen. One suggested doing some light gardening and then going for a walk. According to another study, even if seniors have limited mobility and are in their 80s, they still can benefit from a little physical activity. Slow walking and light housework count as physical activity and can have cardiovascular benefits. The idea is to reduce the time spent sitting and increase the time spent moving.

more gyrification was present. The UCLA researchers are back. Their updated research indicates that meditation might slow the loss of gray matter in the brain. While they expected some small amount of effect, they were surprised at the “widespread effect of meditation ... throughout the entire brain.” What does this mean for seniors? They should seriously consider meditation as part of their daily routine to possibly hold off age-related brain changes. Meditation can be learned, and so it’s best to start with a bit of instruction. If your senior center doesn’t offer classes, go online and research “learn meditation” to help you get started.

By Matilda Charles© As far back as 2007, researchers were reporting on the benefits of meditation in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. At the time, they claimed that only 12 minutes a day allowed the brain to heal. Other researchers soon began their own investigations. In 2009, UCLA researchers discovered that certain areas of the brain are larger and have more gray matter in people who meditate. Two years later those same researchers learned that in people who meditate, the connections between areas in the brain are stronger and have less of the brain atrophy that usually comes with age. In this case, the connections weren’t just between specific parts of the brain, but in the whole brain. Whether the meditation caused brain growth or stopped the reduction wasn’t known at the time. A year later, scientists learned that the brains of those who meditate have “gyrification,” allowing the brain to process information faster. Additionally, it appeared that the more years of meditation, the
