OF BOOKS NOTE Reviewed By Larry Cox© American Ghost: The True Story of a Family’s Haunted Past By Hannah Nordhaus (Harper Collins, hardcover, $25.)
The La Posada hotel in Santa Fe, N.M., was once a grand family home. Built in 1882 by Abraham Staab for his wife, Julia, and their children, it was one of the grandest private structures in the region. Julia’s eighth pregnancy was a difficult one. The son born died a short time after birth. The death plunged Julia into a deep depression, and she spent what was left of her life secluded in her bedroom. She died in 1896 at age 52. During the 1920s, the property passed out of the Staab family but continued to build its reputation as a resort and destination for travelers. Fast-forward four decades. During the 1970s, a janitor was mopping the floor at the hotel late one night. When he looked up from his bucket, he gasped at the sight of a dark-eyed woman dressed in a long, black gown standing near the fireplace. As he blinked, the woman vanished. This visitation was followed by other mysterious events, most of which took place in the second floor suite, once occupied by Julia. Critically acclaimed author Hannah Nordhaus, the great-great-granddaughter of Abraham and Julia Staab, weaves together the strands of Julia’s life in this true-life account, a stunning literary portrait of pioneer life in New Mexico involving ghosts, psychics, imagination and even an improbable love story. V ET’S POST
By Freddy Groves©
The Department of Veterans Affairs will no longer use net worth as a factor to determine if a veteran is eligible for health care. Previously, veterans who were ill with conditions that were not service-related could get care at VA hospitals if their income and net worth met certain thresholds and they made co-payments. Here’s how it works now: The VA calculates the gross income of the household, and then subtracts deductible expenses for the prior year. The result of doing away with assets means that low-income veterans will have fewer out-ofpocket costs for health care, with co-pays ranging from $15 to $50, opening the door to approximately 190,000 more lower-income veterans over the next five years. In 2014, the VA dropped the requirement that these veterans file updated financial information annually. Instead, the department now gets the income figures directly from the Internal Revenue Service and Social Security. If you’re not enrolled in VA health care and want to be, go online to the benefits explorer at http://hbexplorer.vacloud. us and answer the questions, which include whether you participated in Project 112/ SHAD (Shipboard Hazard and Defense), periods of service, whether you’re a Purple Heart recipient and more. The last page concerns your ZIP code, dependents, income and certain deductible expenses. It will help determine what benefits you could have if you enroll. Veterans who live in highcost areas might be able to get reduced co-pay rates for inpatient care. Call the VA at 877-222-VETS (8387) to find out. There are some services that are exempt from co-pays, such as care and counseling for military sexual trauma, readjustment counseling, smoking and weight loss services.

send messages. After checking the Internet and several price guides, including “Hake’s Price Guide to Character Toys” by Ted Hake and published by House of Collectibles, I have determined your cereal bowl is probably worth about $35 and the bicycle safety kit, if intact, in the $100 to $300 range. The pedometer’s value is more difficult to determine, since several models were issued and I am uncertain which one you have. Q: I have a 78-rpm recording of “In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening” by Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters. Do I have a rarity? — Sue, Kileen, Texas. A: Not really. Your recording was issued by Decca in 1951, and even though it charted and peaked for 11 weeks, it is not considered scarce. In a good condition, it would probably sell for a dollar or two. Write Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send him an email to questionsforcox@aol.com.

Q: I have a Victorian-era Majestic wood stove. Could you tell me how much it is worth? — Raymond, Peoria, Ariz. A: Since 1973, Richard Richardson and his daughter Sara have been involved with vintage stoves and ranges. Their business, located in Goshen, Mass., buys, sells, restores and appraises vintage stoves and ranges, and might be able to help you establish a value for your Majestic. Contact for the Good Time Stove Company is 413-268-3677, and stoveprincess@goodtimestoves. com. Check out their website at www.antiquestoves.net. Q: As a kid growing up in Brooklyn during the 1940s, I ate Wheaties for breakfast because it sponsored “Jack Armstrong” on afternoon radio. I have a milk glass cereal bowl, a bicycle safety kit and a pedometer, all products that were Armstrong premiums. I have a sentimental attachment to these three items but also wonder about current values. — Don, Surprise, Ariz. A: The Jack Armstrong radio program began during the summer of 1933 and continued until 1951. It was one of the most popular and longest-running radio adventure series ever. The broadcasts generated dozens of products, including two of my personal favorites: a coveted and rare signaling mirror and secret whistle, both used to

Herbal Supplements Don’t Always Deliver By Matilda Charles© Perhaps seniors just don’t have the appetite they used to, or maybe the taste of foods has changed. Whatever the reason, many seniors have turned to dietary herbal supplements to get as much nutrition as possible. However, the problem is that seniors might not be getting what they expect in those pills. Now New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has gone after companies that don’t deliver what

they’ve promised. Cease and desist letters have been sent to four major retailers that sell their own store brand of herbal supplements because either the supplements contained none of the promised ingredients or there were contaminants or fillers. According to Schneiderman’s office website, contaminants and fillers included “rice, beans, pine, citrus, asparagus, primrose, wheat, houseplant, wild carrot and others.” Only 21 per-

cent of supplements tested contained any of the herbs they were supposed to have. At one retailer, a mere 4 percent of tested supplements contained the material shown on the label. Schneiderman now has asked for information from all four retailers about the processing of these supplements, as well as quality control. What does this mean for those who use herbal supplements to try to increase nutritional intake or adjust a medical condition? It means they need to be careful. The more drugs they’re on, the greater the risk of interactions. For those with compromised immune systems,

You’ve seen it on your neighbor’s driveway and walkways, or on their backyard patio, or on the floor of their garage... those cool and stylish coated concrete surfaces. How do you find the best dinosaurs in the Valley? Let out a good roar at the Arizona Museum of Natural History, of course. Located in Mesa, the Arizona Museum of Natural History allows visitors to explore the state’s backyard, from the creation of the earth roughly 4.5 billion years ago to the present. The prehistoric fun begins when you enter Dinosaur Hall. There, visitors can discover some of the largest dinosaurs that once roamed the planet. If you’re like most people, there are some nights you toss and turn in bed. Here are eight tips from the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) to help you get the good night sleep you need every night of the week: 1. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine, suggest the experts at the NSF, with time to wind down. Stop using computers or smartphones at least 30 minutes before bed. 2. Take a warm bath: This, the NSF adds, can help you relax and ease the transition into a deeper sleep. 3. Try to go to bed at the same time every day. 4. Try making your bedroom darker. Sunlight or even streetlight is a big sleep disrupter. Swap thin, transparent drapes for thick ones, even blackout drapes. 5. Install a ceiling fan: This creates a gentle, soothing breeze while giving off a soft sound to reduce unwanted noise. 6. Add some zen: Incorporate elements that inspire a tranquil environment like fragrance. 7. Paint your room a soothing color: A calming shade from a cool-color family like grey, taupe, or a cool neutral can be relaxing, and paired with cozy bedding is a great way to get a restful night sleep. 8. Regardless of the day, if you still suffer from occasional sleeplessness, try a non-habitforming sleep aid.

C OUCH THEATRE By Sam Struckhoff© PICKS OF THE MONTH These hits are now available on DVD and Blu-ray. “Wild” (R) — Reese Witherspoon plays a woman who takes a solo walk for more than 1,100 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail — for reasons that aren’t easy to spell out, even for her. There a sense that she has no control over her life. She seems caught between destructive behavior when she’s alone, and toxic relationships when she tries to connect. Based on the memoir by Cheryl Strayed, this is doubtlessly Witherspoon’s best performance since “Walk the Line,” perhaps her best on film. “The Rewrite” (PG-13) — Hugh Grant has a way of stumbling over his words, fidgeting, looking around and then saying something understatedly clever or disarmingly earnest. It’s his modus operandi. If he were a pro wrestler, stammering through a sheepish grin would be his signature move. In this way-too-old-for-coming-ofage dramedy, Grant plays a washed-up Hollywood screenwriter who reluctantly accepts a gig teaching screenwriting at a little college in upstate New York. First he’s a jerk, but then he must learn some lessons and repair relationships with the various stereotypical characters he’s offended with his offbeat charm. Hi, I'm Rick Lane, owner of "Save On Services". My brother, Marcus, and I answer our own phones and perform all repairs so that we know the WORK IS DONE RIGHT and you're treated as a VALUED CUSTOMER. We have no warehouse, low advertising costs and no employees, so we can offer you the LOWEST PRICES POSSIBLE and a LIFETIME WARRANTY ON ALL PARTS AND LABOR. Instead of worrying, just call us (Rick or Marcus!) right now. Frankly, most garage door problems are easier to repair and less costly than you might think. And if we don't have an inexpensive solution, we'll direct you to the right place. However, we can probably help you right away with advice, pricing questions, parts, service and repairs. If you're eager to get the door working again there's no problem we can't fix the same day you call. But no matter what the problem is, we can give you good advice.
Here’s some advice…BEWARE! Some companies have technicians who are paid a commission and have to charge more to make a paycheck.
When you hear prices for springs start at $45 to $120 — LOOK OUT! There will be more hidden charges.
K ITCHEN DIVA If you’re tired of eating ordinary spaghetti, try my recipe for collard green ribbons with garlic, lemon and pasta. Cutting tender collard greens into ribbons and tossing them with olive oil, garlic, lemon and pasta transforms it into a delicious and hardy new dish.
WE BEAT THE BIG BOX STORES!
Collard Green Ribbons with Garlic, Lemon and Pasta 2/3 package or more of whole-wheat, thin spaghetti 16 ounces fresh collard greens (about 20 big leaves) 1/4 cup pine nuts 3 tablespoons olive oil 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes 5 small cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon lemon zest 1-1/2 teaspoons sea salt 1/2 teaspoon agave syrup or honey

By Angela Shelf Medearis© 1 teaspoon black pepper 3 ounces Parmesan cheese 2 lemons, cut into wedges Step 1. Bring a big pot of salted water to a boil, and cook pasta according to package directions. Drain quickly, reserving a bit of cooking water, and set aside. Step 2. Cut out center rib of each collard green. Stack a few greens at a time and roll them up into a cigar-like shape. Slice across the roll as thinly as possible (1/8 to 1/4 inch). Shake up the greens and give them a few chops so the strands aren’t so long. Step 3. Heat a heavy-bottomed 12-inch skillet over medium heat and toast pine nuts until they start to turn golden and fragrant. Pour nuts out of skillet and save for later. Step 4. Return skillet to medium heat and pour in 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Sprin-

Enjoy Sustainable Living Throughout the Home Living green isn’t just about saving energy. Sustainable living also means putting environmentally-friendly practices in place throughout your home, such as recycling. With these tips, you can make recycling easier for the whole family. • Establish collection bins to make it easy to gather all your recycling in one place. The number of bins you need depends on your city’s guidelines for sorting. If no sorting is required, a single bin will do. Otherwise, use different colored bins to make it simple to sort paper, aluminum, glass, etc. • Many households use the kitchen as the primary source of recyclable goods. If space is at a premium, keep a smaller collection
bin in the kitchen that can be easily transported to a sorting station in a larger area, such as the garage. • Don’t forget to recycle in other rooms, too. Many common bathroom items, such as shampoo and soap bottles, and even cardboard toilet paper tubes, can be recycled. • Remember that recycling can also come in other forms, like donating unwanted clothing to charity or using leftover water to quench thirsty plants or freshen the dog’s bowl. • Be sure to rinse away any food or liquid residue from containers to manage odors and keep your recycling area tidy and odor free. • Maximize your bin space by compressing cans and bottles.

When it comes to good health, you can certainly feel it in your bones. That’s because your bones are alive. Every day, the body breaks down old bone and puts new bone in its place. While it is normal to lose some bone with age, too much bone loss can lead to osteoporosis. With osteoporosis, the bones become weak and are more likely to break, especially those in the wrist, spine and hip. Because bone loss often happens over time and doesn’t hurt, many people have weak bones and don’t even know it. A broken bone is often the first sign of osteoporosis. It’s a good idea, therefore, to know the risk factors. These include: • Poor diet: Too little calcium can increase your chances of getting osteoporosis. Not enough vitamin D can also increase your risk. Vitamin D helps the body use the calcium in your diet. • Not enough physical activity: Not exercising and not being active for a long time can increase your chances of getting osteoporosis. Like muscles, bones become stronger — and stay stronger — with regular exercise. • Body Weight: Being too thin makes you more likely to get osteoporosis. • Medicines: Certain medications can cause bone loss. • Age: Your chances of getting osteoporosis increase as you get older. Since osteoporosis has no symptoms, it’s important to talk to your doctor about your bone health. If your doctor feels you’re at risk, he or she may order a bone density test. It’s quick, safe and painless. If your bone density test shows that your bones are weak, your doctor may suggest lifestyle changes and prescribe medication that can help.

By Pamela Holechek© It’s a rare business that survives 25 years, run by the same family, in the same location, no less. And when it happens, it’s definitely worthy of acknowledgment. This summer, Nino’s Mexican Restaurant in Sun City will celebrate its silver anniversary. Johnny G. Garcia and his son-in-law Christopher Gene Calzada I — along with Johnny’s wife, Mary Alice, and his daughters Margarita Garcia and Anna “Fifi” Calzada — opened Nino’s Mexican Restaurant in July 1990 at King’s Inn Shopping Center, located at the southeast corner of Grand and 107th avenues, sharing their heritage of traditional Mexican cooking. Johnny G., with his outgoing personality, quickly became the restaurant’s front man and community ambassador, while the younger, more reserved Christopher I took on the master chef duties. By Matilda Charles© The FBI website has a list of scams that are aimed at seniors. Many of these swindles have been going on for years, and the scammers still are finding plenty of victims. Here are some examples: • Medicare and insurance fraud: Scammers posing as Medicare representatives call to try to get personal information. Or, even more brazen, they set up fake mobile clinics and entice seniors to provide their Medicare information. • Reverse mortgage scam: Seniors can lose all their home equity to scammers or even be conned into aiding the scammers in stealing equity from a flipped property. Beware reverse mortgages, and don’t sign anything without expert advice. Be wary of investment seminars, including those hosted by churches. • Funeral and cemetery scams: Scammers read the obituaries and pounce on the spouse to try to collect money that the deceased didn’t even owe. Or, shady funeral-home operators will try to pad the bill. • Telemarketing: Seniors make twice the average number of purchases over the phone, so they’re a handy target. Don’t buy anything from anyone who calls you. If you want something, make the call yourself. • Charity scams: Especially after a natural disaster, the scammers are looking for money. If you want to donate to an organization, make the call yourself. Clip this column and share it with your friends the next time you get together. Maybe you’ll keep one potential victim away from the scammers. To read about more senior scams, go online to www. fbi.gov/scams-safety/fraud/ seniors.

Shield Your Eyes From the Sun Many people aren’t aware that the sun can do damage to their eyes when they are unprotected from ultraviolet (UV) rays. Ultraviolet radiation is invisible to the human eye and damage is cumulative over time, so it’s imperative for everyone — from young kids to grandparents — to take the necessary steps to protect their eyes. Wearing sunglasses is an easy way to shield the eyes while outdoors, but it’s important to look beyond the choices in frames and find sunglasses with lenses that offer the best UV protection. E-SPF, or Eye Sun Protection Factor, is a global index that rates the overall UV protection clear and sunglass lenses provide for the eyes versus going without eyewear. Varied Degrees of Protection Lenses with an E-SPF index of 50-plus means your eyes are 50 times more protected than they are without wearing lenses at all. The index ranges from zero to 25 for clear corrective lenses and from zero to 50-plus for polarized sunglass lenses. Finding the Right Shades To better protect your eyes from harmful UV rays outdoors look for sunglasses that offer the following: • Lenses with an E-SPF index of 50-plus • Large, close-fitting wraparound frames to reduce exposure to rays coming from around the lenses • Polarized lenses — adds protection by reducing glare reflecting off of water, asphalt, windows and snow Also, it’s possible to get your eyewear prescription in sun lenses.

Columbia ParCar Arizona Offers Safe and Comfortable Eco-Friendly Vehicles There are many ways to contend with the ups and downs of automotive fuel costs, one of which is to not drive at all. But a more sensible, ecological solution that can keep you on the road is found at a factory-direct golf car dealership in Sun City West. Columbia ParCar Arizona is part of the family-owned Nordic Group of Companies Ltd., headquartered in Wisconsin. The company continually strives for cutting-edge technology in its American-made vehicles. A visit to the Columbia ParCar sales and service center, a 20,000-squarefoot building located near the Safeway in the Sundome
Plaza Shopping Center at 13525 W. Camino Del Sol, will have one believing it still is possible to drive and save. At the Columbia ParCar Arizona showroom, customers may inspect the many electric-powered golf cars available for sale, verifying their innovative, safety-first features. Then, for complete assurance, one may take a free test drive to fully experience why these cars are distinctive. “We are electric-car experts, and we solve a need for the retiree lifestyle,” says Caleb Amundson, vehicle solutions manager at Columbia ParCar Arizona. “We put together vehicles, not just on a custom-style basis, but on

a solutions basis.” “Whether the purpose is golfing, driving in the community, going to the grocery store, or going to friends’ houses, these activities are for extensive, community-type use of the car,” he continues. “We offer models that extend beyond the prototypical vehicle that is out there. Our product line dates to 1946, making Columbia ParCar the most experienced manufacturer in the industry.” Amundson notes that industry standards for Columbia electric cars, as compared to its competitors, are impressive. “Our vehicles are constructed with a solid-steel frame that boasts a lifetime warranty,” he explains. “Parts on the vehicle are protected for five years and labor is covered for three years.” Columbia ParCar vehicles have the most robust drive motor, which makes for a more comfortable drive in hot or harsh climate conditions, says Amundson. “The Columbia power-control system is the most efficient
on the market, allowing for a more usable range on a single charge,” he adds. “From a reliable 40 miles to as much as 80 miles, the vehicle’s overall design delivers a comfortable, ergonomic, long-range ride.” Columbia ParCar electric cars have an on-board charger, which allows the vehicle to consume less energy when charging. To engage the inventive built-in charger, just connect the advanced Columbia charging batteries’ 110/240 VAC system to the nearest electrical outlet. “Wattage use is similar to leaving a lamp turned on between six and 12 hours,” says Amundson. “Thus, the cost of charging the vehicle is two cents per mile on average, whereas a gas-powered golf car averages approximately five to seven cents per mile.” Columbia ParCar Vehicles also possess an intelligent, energy-recovery braking system. Amundson explains that the recovered energy is recycled back into the batteries when the car is in operation.

Columbia ParCar vehicles come with 13-inch steelbelted street tires that offer a two-inch lift, making them especially visible in traffic. Street-legal cars come equipped with seat belts, yet many automotive parts and accessories can be added, including heaters, air conditioning, audio system, sliding seats, fitted storage, and other custom detailing. Every Columbia ParCar electric vehicle is built to meet applicable federal regulations, as well as to meet or exceed National Highway Traffic Safety Administration standards, says Amundson. “The most applauded feature
on these vehicles is their environmental footprint, which produces zero emissions,” he adds. Columbia ParCar Arizona is a full-service dealer. The on-site service and repair department is backed by 25 years of experience from Service Manager Albert Tiffany, who says technicians will deliver superior care to Columbia ParCar vehicles, as well as most other makes and models of golf cars. Columbia ParCar Arizona also stocks more than 25,000 parts and accessories, with ordering capability for most other makes and models. In the new-car division,
customers may choose from 20 vehicle colors to match custom-upholstery choices. Pre-owned golf cars are also available. Columbia also has a commercial division which provides vehicles for parks, military bases, warehouses and municipalities. Columbia provides and services vehicles for nearby Luke Air Force Base. Columbia ParCar Arizona recently opened a mobile service department, geared toward customers who aren’t able to drive to the company’s sales and service center. “For this type of service, one of our technicians will
drive out to the customer’s car, often performing the sixmonth recommended service, or whatever attention is needed, so that the customer can continue driving their vehicle,” says Amundson. The Columbia ParCar team also provides customers with valuable educational assistance for their vehicles. For details, call 623-9744584 or visit www.columbiaparcaraz.com. The Columbia ParCar Arizona sales and service center in Sun City West, is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The sales department is also open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

of chimichangas (a deepfried burrito), with multiple toppings, plus beans and rice. Children’s meals include a beverage. With nominal drink prices, it can be happy hour all day at Nino’s Mexican Restaurant. All non-alcoholic beverages, including soft drinks, lemonade and iced tea, cost $2. Domestic and imported beers start at $3.15. And margaritas and wines start at $3.75. Nino’s Mexican Restaurant opened in memory of Johnny E. Garcia, son of Mary Alice and Johnny G. Garcia. Johnny E., who was an Arizona Department of Public Safety officer, was killed in
the line of duty on Oct. 14, 1989. A photo and tribute dedicated to Johnny E. is on the front and back covers of the restaurant’s menu. Nino’s Mexican Restaurant’s name evolved from that photo. Nino means godfather in Spanish, and the snapshot shows Johnny E. in his uniform, lovingly holding his small godson Christopher II. Another “In Memoriam” appears on the second page of the menu, this one for Johnny G., who passed away last year. “Our family was so appreciative of the support we received and the prayers
offered in my grandfather’s name,” says Christopher II. “He really meant a lot to the business and obviously to our family and our customers. He had a warm, happy personality. He talked with everyone and always made them feel welcome.” Nino’s Mexican Restaurant, located at 10659 W. Grand Ave., Suite 14, is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information or to place an order for take-out, call 623931-3572. Check out their ad for a money-saving coupon on page 29 in this issue of the Grand Season.

The Best Time to Make an Airline Reservation By David Uffington© Nobody wants to pay too much for airline tickets, but how can you know when it’s the best time to lock in your reservation? CheapAir.com surveyed 15,000 markets (that’s 5 million trips) to come up with the answers. It isn’t as easy as you might think. Your price is going to depend on your destination, the time of year, your travel days and more. Here are some of CheapAir’s conclusions that determine your price: • When to buy: The price of

When making an airline reservation, an average of 47 days in advance could get you the best price.
an airline ticket can change a whopping 70 times while it’s for sale. However, an average of 47 days in advance will get you the best price. • Waiting for last-minute deals: Not a good idea. Expect a sharp rise in price within 14 days of a flight, an average $111 more expensive. Wait until the seven-day window and you could pay $174 more. • Early booking: If you grab a seat the minute a flight is offered, you’ll likely pay at least $50 more. • Best time to book: One to four months in advance is the sweet spot when you’ll find your lowest price. Book more than 114 days before your flight and you’ll average $32 more. Schedule within 27 days of the flight and you’ll pay an average $47 more. • Holidays and summers: The rules are different here because the popular flights fill up quickly. For some destinations your best buy period can be up to 11 months ahead, when tickets first go on sale. Same for Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring break. • The variables: The CheapAir survey didn’t take into consideration whether flights were direct or had stops with layovers. For more about getting the best airline ticket prices, visit www.cheapair.com/blog and look for the blog titled “When to buy airline tickets — Based on 1.5 Billion Airfares.” When it’s time to buy, look at websites that show up when you search online for “cheap airfares” or similar parameters.

Trust Your Car or Truck to
Exclusively Imports
Get Service and Repairs for Less By Heather Wright Schlichting© Does your heart sink when a warning light flashes on your car’s dashboard? Do you dread taking your car to the dealership for regular maintenance because of the high cost? Put your fears aside and know that there is a reputable auto repair shop that has the same diagnostic equipment, tools and parts as a dealership, as well as a trained, professional staff. Exclusively Imports is located at 13365 W. Foxfire Dr., along 134th Dr. just north of Bell and east of Grand. They are experts at servicing your Toyota, Lexus, or any Japanese-, Asiansourced or American-made car or truck — usually for a lower cost than a dealership. “We use genuine Toyota and Lexus parts and can cover your extended warranty repairs just like your dealer,” says Michael Price, who, along with his wife, Kelly, owns and operates Exclusively Imports. Factory-trained master technicians at Exclusively Imports perform the repairs and maintenance your vehicle needs. Their team is highly trained, with a labor rate of $85 per hour, versus $110 to $125 that you will pay at a dealership, Michael notes. Exclusively Imports’ services include regular maintenance for your vehicle at 15,000, 30,000 and 60,000 miles, in addition to timing belt replacement, complete brake jobs, tires, alignments and engine light diagnostics. They have access to the Toyota Information System which keeps them up-to-date with industry issues and service bulletins. Celebrating 26 years in the auto repair industry, Michael is a native of Southern California where he received a scholarship in high school and used the money to buy his first set of tools. As an apprentice for a Japanese vehicle repair shop, he eventually started his own facility, Saddleback Imports,

in Laguna Hills, Calif. In 2005, Michael moved to Arizona and began working for a local shop, but soon realized that the Northwest Valley needed an import specialist. He opened Exclusively Imports in Surprise where he and his wife have provided exclusive service and been the repair choice for more than 1,500 West Valley import owners. Rounding out Michael’s team, three experienced ASE-certified technicians bring their skills and professionalism to Exclusively Imports and pledge to create a relationship you can trust when it comes to servicing and repairing your Asiansourced automobile. “Our education never stops,” Michael continues. “We attend classes to keep up with the latest technology, so we can remain specialists in our field.” Even though they are a smaller, more intimate shop than many of their dealership counterparts, Exclusively Imports’ multiple service bays allow them to fix most repairs while —

you wait. If you are unable to wait while your vehicle is being repaired and need a ride to work or home, Kelly drives a free shuttle service to get you where you need to be. To keep your car running smoothly and in the best shape possible, the shop maintains a repair history for each customer’s car or truck. This is just one of the many ways Exclusively Imports takes the time to know their customers as well as their cars — making the repair process seamless. “Our mission statement is to ‘Create a Relationship You Can Trust’,” says Michael. “We pride ourselves on taking the time to explain to customers just what repairs we think are necessary, and why.” This type of personal attention is rare coming from a dealer’s service manager, because he or she doesn’t actually work on the car or truck, he says. “At Exclusively Imports, we take the time to explain to a customer why a part went bad, and what doesn’t need repair now, but may need atten-

tion at a later date.” Building trust with their customers sets Exclusively Imports apart from many of their competitors. This is evident in the many referrals they receive from satisfied customers. “Referrals are the number-one source of new business for us,” says Michael. “We’ve had customers refer us in blogs online and we’ve been recommended by other local vendors.” According to Michael, Exclusively Imports has never had a complaint from an unhappy customer. “Our goal is to get it right the first time,” he explains. Besides Toyota and Lexus, Exclusively Imports offers service on the following Japanese nameplates: Scion, Nissan, Infiniti, Honda, Acura and Subaru. They also service Korean- and American-made cars. Exclusively Imports is open Monday thru Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Call 623-537-5444 to schedule your appointment and experience for yourself why they are the premier import repair facility in the West Valley.

3 Home Maintenance Tips Some home maintenance jobs require a significant investment of time and specialized equipment, but there are many projects you can accomplish efficiently with basic tools and the right approach. Follow these tips to get started: • Update your toolbox: Take inventory to ensure your collection is complete, and replace damaged or rusted tools. • Get ahead of potential problems: For example, have a plunger on hand to prevent clogged sinks and toilets from causing water damage, and keep gutters and filters clean to prevent structural damage or fire. You can also protect your home and valuables from damage by using adhesive to secure precious items from getting knocked over, and protect floors from traffic damage by securing rugs and felt pads to furniture. • Get organized: Daily home maintenance tasks like clean-

ing are easier when they are done along the way rather than letting them pile up, creating a bigger job. Store everyday needs in each room, or on each floor. For maximum efficiency, keep cleaning supplies in both the bath and the kitchen, and a broom and vacuum on each floor. Making sure you have the right tools on hand and taking preventive steps to get ahead of potential problems will make minor home repair jobs quick and easy so you can get back to enjoying the comforts of your home.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

ERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson©
When you make a meringue, be sure to spread it all the way to the crust on all sides. If you do, it will not shrink. ••• Newspaper bags are handy hand covers in many situations. Keep them close if you are painting, doing a DIY art project, working in the shop with sticky or
greasy materials, or baking and working with dough. ••• To clean burned-on bits from your cast-iron skillet, scrub with a plastic scrubber and salt as an abrasive. Dry immediately and rub with oil to keep moist. ••• Metal shower hooks can be used in the sewing basket
to hold safety pins. They can be used in a jewelry box to corral costume rings as well. ••• After your dishwasher has run its course, open up the door and let the dishes air dry. On cooler days, there’s the added bonus of humidifying the house with the steam that escapes. ••• If you want to make a message station for dry-erase notes, try this cheap and fun DIY trick: Grab a pic-
ture frame with a glass insert. Use a photo, pretty piece of patterned paper or a piece of your grandchild’s artwork covered by a sheet of tracing paper in the frame. Hang on the wall. You can write on the glass with a dry-erase marker and erase as needed. ••• Cut your kitchen sponge in half, or even thirds. You can clean just as well with a smaller sponge, and you will extend its life, saving you money.

On April 13, 1360, an Easter Monday hailstorm kills an estimated 1,000 English soldiers in Chartres, France. Lightning struck down several leaders, and hailstones began pelting the soldiers, scattering the horses. Hail typically falls at about 100 mph. On April 16, 1943, Albert Hoffman, a Swiss chemist
working at the Sandoz pharmaceutical research laboratory, accidentally consumes LSD-25, resulting in unusual sensations and hallucinations. Widespread use of the so-called mind-expanding drug began in the 1960s. On April 17, 1885, Karen Dinesen, better known by her pen name Isak Dinesen, is
born in Denmark. Dinesen’s memoir, “Out of Africa” (1937), helped demystify the Dark Continent for millions of readers. She published several other story collections before her death in 1962. On April 18, 1983, the U.S. embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, is almost completely destroyed by a car-bomb explosion that kills 63 people, including the suicide bomber and 17 Americans. The terrorist attack was carried out
in protest of the U.S. military presence in Lebanon. Crossword Solution

IT’S TIME TO REGAIN THE CONFIDENCE YOUR NATURAL TEETH ONCE PROVIDED Would you be surprised if I told you there is a new procedure that can give you a complete set of fixed teeth in one day? This is a new teeth replacement techBy G. Sroujieh, DDS, AFAAID nique capable of giving patients who are suffering from bad, non-savable teeth or who have been wearing dentures for a long time a beautiful set of teeth in one day.
With this technique we will be able to use four special implants to attach a new set of permanent teeth. In most cases, patients lacking the minimum amount of bone required to support regular dental implants, and who have been told that they were not candidates for implants, will enjoy the benefit of this technique since it requires less bone volume and does not require either bone or soft tissue grafting. The “Teeth in One Day” technique is a new implant procedure that was originally developed to help people with severe bone loss in the posterior area of the jaws. This technique offers the solution of fixed teeth for patients who until now have had no other option than wearing uncomfortable dentures. Pa-
tients usually leave with entire arches of fixed teeth on the same day of their surgery.
How does it work?
Before considering this technique, it is necessary to have your case evaluated by Dr. Sroujieh. During the initial consultation, we will listen to your concerns and offer you solutions based on your specific problems or needs. A clinical exam will be done and X-rays will be taken. Also, we will need a 3D CT SCAN for your jaws so we can plan your dental surgery virtually on the computer using special software. Impressions or molds will be taken also at that visit to fabricate the new set of teeth in our lab. On the day of the surgery, the remaining teeth, if any, will be removed. Four dental implants will be placed and a customized non-removable prosthetic bridge will be attached to the implants. This fixed set of teeth will be used for 3-6 months, after that we will replace it with a permanent strong natural looking one. In the few months following the surgery, known as the healing phase, implants will go through osseointegration, meaning new bone will form around the implants and make a biological bond with
