The back-of-the-envelope method of filing a disability-benefits claim with the Department of Veterans Affairs is no more. Any veteran wishing to file claims or appeals now will need to use the correct form. The forms will walk you through describing your symptoms or conditions, which will help get your claim moving in the right direction. The change is to help the VA clear up the backlog by the end of this year. The following situations need the standardized forms: Veteran or survivor application for disability compensation or pension: VA Form 21-526EZ, Application for Disability Compensation and Related Compensation Benefits, for veterans filing for disability benefits, or Wartime veteran filing for pension: VA Form 21-527EZ, Application for Pension, or Survivor filing for dependency and indemnity compensation, pension and accrued benefits: VA Form 21-534EZ, Application for DIC, Death Pension, and/or Accrued Benefits. Veteran wishing to appeal a disability decision: VA Form 21-0958, Notice of Disagreement. (Right now veterans and survivors won’t have to use that form to start appeals for pension or survivor benefit decisions.) There are three ways to start the claims process with an intent to file (giving yourself a year to get it done): Access eBenefits online; complete a VA Form 21-0966, Intent to File a Claim for Compensation and/or Pension, or Survivors Pension and/or DIC; or call the VA at 800-827-1000. The VA recommends that veterans filing claims or appeals work with a Veterans Service Organization representative, who’s skilled with a computer or familiar with the forms. Consider it a way to get your claim right the first time. For Advertising Information Call (623) 594-1630

GRAND SEASON - SURPRISE AREA EDITION
MAY 2015
Early in “The Good Girl” we meet Mia, who’s recently returned home after being kidnapped and held for months in a remote cabin in the frigid Minnesota wilderness. So the reader knows right off the bat that she will be found and rescued safely. The real mystery of this suspenseful thriller is in figuring out what exactly happened in that cabin, and why Mia can’t seem to remember any of it. Constructed with a timejumping plot that glimpses various points before, after and during the abduction, the story is told largely in the alternating voices of three characters: Eve, Mia’s mother, who loves her daughter but has never been able to understand her; Gabe, the detective assigned to the investigation; and Colin, Mia’s abductor, a man long hardened to brutal reality but suddenly learning just what his limits are. True to this narrative design, Mia herself is a bit of a cipher. She’s viewed mostly through the eyes of the three fallible narrators, each of whom also is trying to figure her out themselves. When, late in the story, Mia finally gets her own say, the impact is devastating: Unexpected secrets are revealed and relationships altered forever. There actually are several stories intertwining here, and the themes of guilt, disappointment and resentment thread their way through them all.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An unexpected problem should be handled as quickly as possible so that it doesn’t cause too much of a delay. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bovine’s fondness for tidiness pays off when you untangle a situation that seems hopelessly snarled. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking a stand against an uncalled-for situation involving a friend isn’t easy, but somehow you’ll rise to the challenge and do it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) There are still some questions on all sides that need to be dealt with in order to allow hurt feelings to heal. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Consider a new spring makeover that will show you in your best light. SOLID AS A ROCK
G
By Roberta M. Meehan
ranite – a rock solid substance used since the days of the Roman Empire for its versatility, endurance, and elegance. Granite – a building block of Surprise, Arizona. Granite – the cornerstone of American Granite, a key industry in the northwest part of the Valley of the Sun. American Granite – this is a family business – the type of business from ages gone by that any family
could emphatically say, “This is OUR business.” That is what American Granite and Tintas Granite Flooring & Warehouse companies are all about. They are American companies that started and grew with the city of Surprise, Arizona. The owners proudly proclaim that their business grew up with the relatively new city of Surprise. As Surprise grew from a few people in 1938 to over 125,000 today, it is not surprising that the Tintas family correlates their family business growth with the growth of Surprise itself. Vasile (Bill) Tintas emigrated from Romania 26 years ago. He and his wife, Laura (also from Romania), met in this country and lived in Chicago before moving to Arizona. Bill, Laura, and their two daughters, Christine and Denice, are all a part of Surprise’s granite story. All family members know all aspects of the business. This is their business and theirs is an American success story. And, not only do they work with granite, but also quartz, Silestone, marble, and more.
— PAID ADVERTISEMENT —
After working diligently for various companies for 17 years, Bill decided 11 years ago to start his own company, Tintas Granite & Flooring Warehouse; a company that welcomes the public, contractors, realtors, designers, builders; a company that prides itself in being big enough to handle any customer and any job; a company that stresses quality over quantity but personable enough to consider each customer on a one-on-one basis. In addition to the Tintas family, American Granite and Tintas Granite & Flooring Warehouse employ about 30 full and part time workers. Interestingly, all work is done “in house” because this granite corporation believes in hiring and keeping skilled people as their own workers for every aspect of the business. This is an “all purpose” company, a “one-stop shop” that supplies not only the granite for a project but also produces complementary cabinetry and flooring, including showers, back splashes, and so forth. American Granite, while definitely working with the other parts of the organization, is primarily concerned with the granite itself. Granite, the solid foundation, comes from a variety of countries. American Granite believes the best is from Brazil because the Brazilian granite has the richest colors. Other good granite sources include Italy, India, Africa, Norway, and Ireland (to name a few!). Imported granite is used because of its quality. Native (as in Arizona) granite develops from a poorer soil and thus, while good for building, lacks the elegance, luster, and durability needed for insidethe-home construction.
either to the elegant popular look or to the more rustic leather look. American Granite inspects its purchases before importing them, which adds to the quality of the eventual products. When the granite arrives at American Granite as a slab of stone, it is initially prepared so that the prospective customer can see the marbling and help to determine the best view for the proposed use. The customer is involved in all aspects of the work. All work is custom work. A template is made and that template is used to help the customer see the best cut. After preparation, the granite is prepared to the customer’s specifications (using the “measure nine times, cut once” formula). After the granite is cut and finished (including being polished) to meet the customer’s needs, it is coated with a sealant that is good for up to 20 years (and can be re-applied after that). Considering that some of the granite from ancient Roman times is still in use, one can assume that American Granite products will be functional for a long time to come! Visit American Granite at 13410 W. Foxfire Drive in Surprise, Arizona. We’re open Monday through Friday 8 am – 5 pm & Saturday 9 am – 2 pm. We are open to the public. Some of American Granite’s 3000 plus granite slabs to choose from!
It should be noted that there are over 400 types of granite and that various granites can be polished Family Owned. From left to right. Laura, Bill, Denice, and Christine.

8 Easy Green Cleaning Tips That Use Vinegar With the array of cleaning options at the grocery store, it’s easy to forget that the most natural and effective cleaner could be sitting in your cabinet at this very moment. White distilled vinegar is an all-in-one cleaner. It can take on most cleaning challenges, regardless of size, and there’s no need to worry about harmful effects typically associated with harsh, chemical cleaning agents. Here are eight tips from The Vinegar Institute (yes, it actually exists) on how to utilize the cleaning power of white distilled vinegar in your home: • Use full-strength vinegar to banish grease and eliminate mildew. • Dilute with water to
remove grease and grime on miniblinds. • Dilute with ammonia and baking soda to freshen a musty closet. • Mix with salt and baking soda to unclog drains. • Dilute with water to deodorize the garbage disposal. • Spray full strength to get rid of unwanted grass and weeds. • Use full strength to remove your child’s ballpoint pen “art” from painted walls. • Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in 1 cup of white distilled vinegar and stir in flour until it becomes a paste. Apply paste to brass, copper or pewter and let it stand for about 15 minutes. Rinse with clean warm water and polish until dry.

PICKS OF THE MONTH These hits are now available on DVD and Blu-ray. “Cake” (R) — Claire (Jennifer Aniston) has been in constant pain since a car accident more than a year ago, and it’s taken its toll on her love life, her career and her personality. Spiraling into prescription abuse and a general feeling of nothingness, Claire can’t get over the suicide of one of the women in her chronic pain support group (Anna Kendrick). Clearly, this is heavy drama and a bit of a departure for Aniston, who has been stuck in goofball comedy purgatory. Here, Aniston shows she has the chops to carry that dramatic weight. “The Wedding Ringer” (R) — An awkward, sweaty, fidgety guy, Doug (Josh Gad), is about to marry way out of his league, but he’s got no best man, and no groomsmen at all to match his bride’s side. In comes Jimmy (Kevin Hart), who sells best-man services. For the right price, he’ll be your best man, the life of the party, and make you look good. Hart and Gad are both real comedic talents, feeding into characters, each within their comfort zones — but the chemistry isn’t happening. You’ll laugh, certainly, but this isn’t the new must-see wedding-related guy comedy. TV SERIES • “Suits” Fourth Season • “The Mentalist” Seventh Season • “The Musketeers” Second Season

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

A Woman’s Guide to Social Security By Matilda Charles© About 60 percent of Americans receiving Social Security are women, and the Social Security Administration has put together information that is specific to them. Here are a few things from its booklet, “What Every Woman Should Know”: • Women who haven’t worked can be covered by a spouse’s benefits as early as age 62. • Women who are divorced can claim benefits on their

former spouse’s Social Security. File for both your own and his to see which will get the most money. If your divorced spouse is still working, you can claim your own benefits now and then see which are higher when he retires. Or you can claim his benefits now if he is retired and continue working, letting your own credits add up until you retire. (Beware: You’ll pay $1 for every $2 over the allowed maximum earned,
which is $15,720 for 2015.) • The number of years a woman has to have been married before divorce is 10 years. You must wait two years to claim his benefits. • If you’re a widow, you can get benefits at age 60 or older as long as you don’t remarry before reaching that age. • If you’ve been abused and need to flee and hide, Social Security will issue you a new number as long as you have proof. • Be absolutely certain that your name, Social Security number and earnings are correct on your W-2 form. When you receive your annual statement, check it carefully, especially the earnings.

Q: Although I don’t consider myself a collector, I buy occasional board games and puzzles when I find good ones at flea markets or garage sales. I currently have almost 50, including “Pollyanna,” “Bomb the Navy,” “Car 54,” “Get Smart” and a 1930s edition of “Monopoly.” How can I find out if any of my games are worth keeping? — Kyle, Surprise, Ariz. A: Games create a feeling of nostalgia with many collectors, which has, of course, led to an increase in values. For example, your “Car 54” game, issued

This “Car 54” board game from 1951 is worth about $300.
in 1951, currently is worth about $300, up at least tenfold from just a decade ago. There are several factors to consider when purchasing older board games. Bruce Whitehill is one of the foremost authorities in this field of collecting. His book, “Games: American Board Games and Their Makers 1822-1992” is considered one of the better references. Published by Wallace-Homestead, it also has current values. Whitehill buys, sells and appraises games. There is a charge for appraisals. Contact is Big Game Hunter, 11 South Angell Street, No. 116, Providence, RI 02906; games@ thebiggamehunter.com; and www.thebiggamehunter.com. Q: I have a collection of Jim Beam bottles that my father compiled. He is in a nursing home, and I am liquidating his collection. Can you help me? — Shirley, Cheyenne Wells, Colo. A: One of the better groups for Jim Beam enthusiasts is the International Association of Jim Beam Bottle and Specialties Clubs. Yearly dues are $20, which would put you in contact with collectors throughout the country. Contact information is 2965 Waubesa Ave., Madison, WI 53711; www.jimbeamclubs. com; and 608-663-9661. When struggling with chronic pain, many often feel their concerns fall on deaf ears. Without physical symptoms, friends, family and sometimes even physicians may fail to empathize with the debilitating effects of the condition. Just because chronic pain lacks physical manifestations, it doesn’t mean the battle is without casualties; sleep loss, decreased productivity and strained relationships are just a few of the things that may result from chronic pain conditions. There are an estimated 100 million Americans living with chronic pain, according to the American Academy of Pain Medicine. Many of those sufferers are dealing with conditions like osteoarthritis, sciatica, fibromyalgia and diabetic peripheral neuropathy, among others. While each individual experiences pain differently, there are some effective pain management techniques, including prescription medication, which can provide potential options to try before costly surgeries or potentially addictive narcotic pain therapy. Talk to your doctor to find out if these tips can help supplement your chronic pain regimen. • Be active: Look for low-impact physical activities like yoga, walking or aquatic exercise to get you started on a manageable exercise routine. • Eat healthy foods: Certain foods, like cherries, ginger and hot peppers have ingredients that may help to reduce pain. • Get a good night’s sleep: Creating a good sleep environment is the first step toward improving your sleep.

Think you know your Cuervo from your Patrón? Take a trip to Mexico by visiting the Tequila Bar inside La Hacienda restaurant at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Resort in North Scottsdale to sample flights of tequila categories reposado, anejo and blanco, and learn what makes each type distinct. The Tequila Bar offers artisan tastings of more than 200 varieties of tequila from 36 different labels. What makes the experience unique at The Tequila Bar are their tequila gods and goddesses. Each weekend, one of these tequila aficionados will be on hand to serve customers some of the best tequila they’ve ever tasted and teach the process of tequila making, as well as explain the many grades and flavors of tequi-
la that are available. Many of these tequila gods and goddesses have undergone extensive training to better understand the wonders of this unique liquor. Some have trained in Mexico and earned an Award T certification from the Tequila Regulatory Council (a nonprofit organization in Mexico that verifies the performance and the fulfillment of Mexican standards concerning tequila), an accreditation similar to that of a sommelier. The Award T certification enables staff to provide customers and co-workers more information about tequila and the assurance that the restaurant’s selection of tequilas are all certified. For a truly unique tequila taste, try the snake bite, which is garnished with a real (dead) rattlesnake.

Nothing says spring like a beautiful bunch of crisp asparagus. While asparagus is available year-round, it’s much better when purchased locally. Asparagus is easy to select and prepare, and comes in a variety of vibrant colors including green, violet, purple and white. It also grows wild and is commercially available fresh, frozen and canned. The stalks range in size from colossal to small. Various types and colors of asparagus can be used without a noticeable difference in taste, so mix and match colors and sizes for visual interest. It tastes delicious hot or cold. Asparagus should be crisp and firm, not limp or wrinkled, with tightly closed tips. Dull colors and ridges in the stems are an indication of a lack of freshness. The stalks

Give Your Dog Comfort And Security Any time you and your family are busy, it’s important to remember that pets can get stressed out, especially if they spend a lot more time alone than normal. Fortunately, there is a way to provide a safe place where your dog can have some time

dogs. They are den animals, and although confinement may not feel natural to humans, for a dog, it’s innate and can provide welcome solace. The kennel can be placed in the family room so your pet will still be included in any family gathering, but not underfoot. There are a multitude of kennel options that range from basic plastic and wire versions to gorgeous cherry hardwood kennels that look like a piece of high-end furniture. You should remember, however, that even in the kennel, your pet can still become nervous or overly excited. It can help to provide some new toys that he or she can chew and gnaw to help relieve stress.

Avoid Slips, Trips and Falls Some of the most serious injuries among older adults, age 65 and older, are caused by falling. More than 1.6 million older Americans end up in the emergency room or hospital because of a fall, according to the National Institutes of Health. Seniors who have broken a hip by falling can have trouble recovering and regaining mobility. The good news is many falls are preventable. One of the first things you can do if you take prescription medication is have your health care team review your medication. “Some prescription medicines and over-the-counter drugs, or a combination of them, can make you dizzy or sleepy. Either can lead to a fall,” said Jaza Marina, M.D., an Atlanta-based geriatrician. “If you fall, be sure to let your doctor know, even if you aren’t hurt. Sometimes falls are a sign of a new medical problem that needs attention.” Many underlying causes of falls can be treated or corrected. Dr. Marina recommends these nine proactive steps to reduce the risk of falling. 1. Remove clutter, throw rugs and electrical cords that might cause you to trip. 2. Store items on bottom shelves. 3. Add grab bars where necessary — in hallways, stairways and bathtubs. 4. Add a rubber bath mat in the shower or tub. 5. Make sure your home is well lit. Use night lights in hallways and bathrooms. 6. Keep a phone and flashlight by your bed. 7. Stay as physically active as you can. 8. Wear comfortable shoes with good support. 9. Have your vision and hearing checked. Buying or Selling a Home or Investment Property? Get Leolinda Bowers On Your Side. By Pamela Holechek©
I
n December 2004, with ink barely dry on her real-estate license and having had only three weeks of contractwriting training, Leolinda Bowers was eager to learn and see if she could do what she had never done — sales, of any kind. Rather than wait out the holidays, Leolinda quickly demonstrated tremendous initiative. She planned her first open house — on New Year’s Day. The idea, she says, was to sit and oversee someone else’s listing, to immediately test her abilities. This project met with incredible negativity, Leolinda recalls, regarding the day, the sign-in book, the 25 fliers that had to be produced, and her lack of experience in the industry. Yet, after her second, softly persuasive phone conversation with the real estate agent, Leolinda achieved her goal and away she went to Sun City West, to open the other agent’s listing for possible sale. “I thought, ‘Well, if nobody shows up, I’ll figure something out,’” she says. “But then people did show up, at least 75 of them.” Leolinda pauses, before continuing: “There is more to this story.” On that first day of 2005, Leolinda was asked to first sell one couple’s current home, so they could purchase the one she was showing. “I told them, ‘Yes, I think I can do that,’” she says. “To date, I’ve done six transactions with that couple, and we’ve since become close friends.” Now an associate broker for the Long Realty West Valley office in Surprise, Leolinda has continued to hold New Year’s Day open house showings, resulting in many more sales, she says. Admittedly, Leolinda soon recognized a vital component for writing a listing. “I learned to listen,” she says. “During my initial conversation with a seller, I listen to hear why the client loved their home. If they say they loved the sunsets from their patio, I make sure we capture a spectacular photo of a sunset from the patio and include it in the listing materials.”
Whether selling or buying residential real estate, clients can count on Leolinda Bowers, an associate broker with Long Realty West Valley, to work in their best interests. Leolinda, who was born and raised in Hilo, Hawaii, certainly knows the residential real estate market for the Northwest Valley, especially the golf retirement communities. She lives yearround in Sun City Grand, owns additional property in Sun City West, and golfs when time permits. The full-time real estate agent attributes the joy of her work to one aspect: “I am here because of my clients,” says Leolinda. “I love it when my clients find the right home and get the best possible deal in a satisfying transaction.” In addition to becoming an associate broker, Leolinda has earned accreditations as a Certified Real Estate Specialist (CRS); a Certified Negotiation Expert; and a Lifetime Membership Award for Sales Excellence in the President’s Round Table from the West Maricopa Association of Realtors® (WeMAR), which is given for significant sales volume in three consecutive years. Before her stellar real estate work, Leolinda concentrated on her education. She holds a bachelor’s — PAID ADVERTISEMENT —
degrees in biology and chemistry, as well as a master’s of business administration degree with an emphasis in project management. As one might imagine, thoroughness is one of Leolinda’s greatest assets. A visit to her website, www.leolinda. com, designed by one of her three children and illustrated by an excellent photographer, reveals her passion for sharing knowledge and expertise, all for the benefit of her clients. Whether selling or buying residential real estate, clients can count on Leolinda Bowers to work in their best interests. You can reach Leolinda in many ways. Her direct cell phone number is (602) 403-6865. Her office phone number is (623) 937-5701. You can also reach her via email: REALTOR@ leolinda.com. The Surprise office of Long Realty West Valley is located at 14245 W. Grand Ave., Suite 1. Check out the ad for Leolinda Bowers on the front cover of this issue of the Grand Season.
Don’t Fall Victim to Phone Scammers’ Tricks By David Uffington© Scammers would rather have a pipeline right into your home rather than take a chance on mail that might get trashed straight out of the mailbox. Hence the rise in telephone scams. USA.gov has a section on phone scams and fraud that covers a number of the common ones, such as these: • Slamming is when a phone company changes your service without your permission. If you find charges for this on your phone bill, call to insist you be switched back. • Caller ID spoofing makes a phone number show up on your Caller ID that might encourage you to take the call. For example, it might appear that your bank or credit-card company is calling you, and
you might be tempted to go ahead and give the personal information the caller asks for. • Cramming is adding charges to your phone bill, likely small ones that you might not notice. Consumer.ftc.gov has an extensive section on phone scams, including handling

HOLLYWOOD The first Oscar buzz of the year is for Sally Field, whose film “Hello, My Name Is Doris” won the audience award at the SXSW film fest in Austin, Texas. It also stars Beth Behrs, Tyne Daly and Peter Gallagher. Don’t Expect Slow Growth to Continue March’s disappointing job growth is one more sign that the economy seems to have slowed at the start of the year. The harsh winter weather (especially in the Northeast), the immediate impact of falling oil prices and a stronger U.S. dollar have factored into current conditions. But similar to last year, we think the slowdown is likely to be short-term because improving consumer sentiment, continued job growth and lower prices at the pump can support consumer spending throughout the year. The stock market was essentially flat in the first quarter and interest rates declined slightly, reflecting expectations that the Federal Reserve (Fed) won’t start to hike short-term rates until later in the year.
Slower Job Growth in March Let’s take a closer look at the March job numbers: • The economy added only 126,000 jobs, well below expectations for a 245,000 increase, according to Bloomberg. • Revisions reduced January and February job gains, but both remained
The economy has gained over 3.7 million jobs since the start of 2014.

above 200,000. • Average wages were up 2.1 percent over the past year, which is similar to gains in the past. Keep in mind, though, that March’s sluggish job growth follows the best 12 months of job gains since 1994. In addition, the economy has gained more than 3.7 million jobs since the start of 2014. Outlook Remains Favorable Despite softer economic growth in the first quarter, the U.S. economy should accelerate slightly to grow between 2.5 and 3 percent in 2015. That would provide a solid foundation for rising earnings and higher stock prices over time. In addition, consumer confidence is now at its highest level since 2007, according to the Conference Board. And as the year continues, we expect more positive signs for investors: Lower oil prices can boost consumer spending,
help non-energy corporate profits and improve global economic growth. A Long-Term View The economy, like the stock market, rarely grows steadily. So how can you avoid overreacting and instead take advantage of opportunities? First of all, recognize that slower growth is frequently followed by stronger growth. But also make sure you’re prepared by checking that your portfolio has an appropriate mix of stocks, bonds and international investments based on your individual situation and comfort level with risk. A well-diversified portfolio can help you stay focused on your long-term financial goals — not on the monthly economic reports — and help keep you on track toward reaching them. Count On Can Do Engraving & Specialties to Create Personalized Lasting Memories Whether you need a plaque that includes an engraved description of a particular achievement, information for a sign sandblasted on a specific substrate, or a shirt screen-printed or embroidered with a special message, Can Do Engraving & Specialties is a company you can count on. Family-owned and operated Can Do Engraving & Specialties has been in business for 20 years with several improvements along the way. In 2007, owner Marvella Lang purchased the business from her parents, who had owned the store for 10 years prior. During the time her parents owned Can Do Engraving & Specialties, Marvella managed the store whenever they went out of town. She says this provided her with an idea of what the engraving industry offers and continues to attend training seminars of various kinds to improve her business. “We are still growing and adding more services as new things emerge,” she explains. “We strive to make sure our store is providing our customers with the latest innovations in engraving and our other services.” Marvella’s son, Matthew, has worked at Can Do Engraving & Specialties for more than five years and recently earned his bachelor’s degree in Information Technology and Web Development. “We are so proud of what Matthew has accomplished and are truly grateful for what he has brought to our company,” says Marvella. “He continues to develop creative ways to engrave on many difficult items.” Can Do Engraving & Specialties can perform engraving services on almost any material or surface, notes Marvella. These engraving services include diamond engraving,

rotary engraving, laser engraving, sand carving, bronze plaques and sublimation (which allows them to engrave with full color on specialized products). Marvella says those methods allow Can Do Engraving & Specialties to engrave on materials such as, but not limited to, metal, plastic, leather, wood, ceramic, stone, marble and glass. For example, they have engraved on an hourglass, various types and styles of urns, a bell for a ship, knives, guns, baseball gloves, chalices and other church items, rings, and watches and other types of jewelry. Their bronze plaques are displayed in many locations throughout the area — under trees, on columbariums, on benches and even at the Wildlife World Zoo — and come with many options and a lifetime guarantee. For customers looking for embroidery and screen-printing services, Can Do Engraving & Specialties can supply the merchandise needed or customers may bring in their own products. They offer several options while only requiring a minimum order of one, says Marvella. Can Do Engraving & Specialties performs printing services, too. Let them print your business cards, banners, envelopes, labels, stationery, invitations, announcements, door hangers, fliers and other documents. Marvella says the company regularly prints banners for church events and newsletters for clubs and associations, and they have also been involved in the printing of a book. But that’s not all. Can Do Engraving & Specialties also provides marketing solutions using promotional products. For instance, if you’re looking to advertise your business or special event, the compa-

Additionally, many local clubs and churches regularly have the company produce a variety of items, says Marvella. Aside from shipping across the U.S., Can Do Engraving & Specialties has sent several items overseas. The company views this as a privilege and hopes to continue to serve many others in their particular area of need, says Marvella.
Can Do Engraving & Specialties is located in the Greenway Terrace Shopping Center at 15434 N. 99th Ave. in Sun City. If a particular item can’t be found in the showroom, Marvella says the company has access to many sources to acquire what customers are looking to purchase. Can Do Engraving & Specialties hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, but the staff is usually in the store until at least 4 p.m. Customers who intend to stop by the store after 2 p.m. are encouraged to call 623-9721760 to make sure staff is still onsite. Although the store is not open on the weekends, Marvella says the company tries to accommodate customers’ needs with creative ways for drop-offs and pickups. Sun City Alterations Can Make the Necessary Adjustments to Your Wardrobe Sewing is not a lost art at Sun City Alterations. Whether a customer needs a pair of pants hemmed, a suit jacket sleeve shortened, or some cushions and curtains put together, this company can get the job done. Located next door to Can Do Engraving & Specialties in the Greenway Terrace Shopping Center at 15436 N. 99th Ave. in Sun City, Sun City Alterations has been in business for more than 25 years and owned by the same family for the past 23 years. Current owner Marvella Lang purchased Sun City Alterations from her parents eight years ago. Prior to that, she was the store’s manager for four years. Not including Marvella, Sun City Alterations currently has four employees, and three of them have worked at the store for more than five years. “They have all been sewing for a number of years,” says Marvella. “One had retired and then came back again less than a year later. I consider us a family.” “My staff is very kindhearted and work well together,” she adds. “They also work well one-on-one with each customer and know many of them by name. We’ve had some of the same customers for the 23 years I’ve been around the business.” Sun City Alterations performs many types of alterations jobs. Hemming pants and shortening suit jacket sleeves are just a fraction of the type of work the seamstresses in the store can do. They can also taper in sides, put in zippers where there were none, modify a garment due to a special medical condition, and take in and let out waists for custom-

The company can also make adjustments to items found in the home, such as cushions, curtains, bedspreads, duvet covers, shams and dust ruffles. Marvella says Sun City Alterations draws customers

from across the Valley. “Some of our customers who are winter visitors have said they wait until they get back to the Valley to do their alterations because they know we’ll do a great job for them,” she explains. “Another customer has had several dresses altered for weddings that she’s been in and she’s had us alter several formals for concerts she’s performed in, too. Several dancers have been coming to the store for years, as well.” Sun City Alterations also focuses on providing excellent customer service. “I have a high standard for quality and I believe our customers have grown to expect that, as well,” says Marvella. “I have a very unique situation in that I also own the store next door — Can Do Engraving & Specialties — and the two stores often work well together. We offer embroidery at both loca-
tions, which allows customers to really personalize an item.” Marvella has done many different kinds of occupations but has found that this area of the Valley has been a great location to fulfill many needs of her customers. “We feel honored to be a part of our customers’ lives and hope to continue meeting their needs for many years to come,” she says. Sun City Alterations is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday during the winter, and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday during the summer. 7 Tips to Help Beat Stress Many things can trigger stress among retired adults — paying bills on a fixed income, failing health, caring for an ill spouse, or even grandparenting. Excessive stress can lead to serious health problems. “When stressed, the body releases substances such as cortisol and adrenaline that affect every organ and can cause muscle tension, insulin secretion and increased heart rate,” says Dr. Arthur Hayward, an Oregon-based geriatrician. “You can’t avoid stress, but managing it can help preserve your health and well-being,” Dr. Hayward adds. He recommends identifying and understanding the cause of your stress and finding ways to relieve it, such as these seven tips: 1. Pace yourself: Don’t take on too much and be aware of your limitations. 2. Set realistic goals and expectations, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. 3. Plan time for yourself: Recharge your batteries. 4. Exercise and eat a balanced diet: Get plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. 5. Try relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga. 6. Get enough sleep: If you have problems sleeping, talk to your doctor. Drinking caffeinated beverages and alcohol can affect your ability to get a good night’s sleep. 7. Stay positive: Positive thoughts can make a difference, such as “I am hopeful” or “Things will be better.”

On May 10, 1909, “Mother” Maybelle Carter is born near Nickelsville, Va. From the late 1920s all the way through the 1950s, she was a familiar presence on radio and a powerful influence on the course of country music. She helped make the Carters the “First Family of Country Music” and introduced songs like “Wildwood Flower” and “Can the Circle Be Unbroken.” On May 11, 1985, 50 people die in a fire in the grandstand at a soccer stadium in Bradford, England. The wooden roof, which burned in just four minutes, was scheduled to be replaced by a steel roof later that same week. On May 12, 1957, racecar driver A.J. Booth Built’s Products and Service Earn Praise By Allyson Lewark©
B
ooth Built Patio Products has been at the forefront of patio shade and enclosures in Arizona for the past 32 years. Their acute attention to detail and quality service has earned them an A-plus rating from the Better Business Bureau and they say they receive 70 percent of their business from referrals. Owners Tom and Donna Booth credit Booth Built’s success to the wonderful relationships they’ve established with customers throughout the years. “We’re very relationship-oriented and work very hard to create and maintain relationships with our customers,” says Tom. “We treat our customers the way we want to be treated.” With a smile, he adds: “I still have customers from 1988 calling us.” Tom moved to Arizona from Long Island, N.Y., in 1980, and in 1982 he took a job in the patio shade and enclosure industry. Six months later, he started his own business. Since its inception, Booth Built has improved more than 5,000 homes with zero complaints, says Tom. “All our employees are very skilled and have been with us for many years,” says Tom. “It’s rewarding to get to work with so many people.” Booth Built provides services for those who are looking for full-shade patio covers, partial-shade patio covers, sunrooms and enclosures. Tom says the
most popular choice in the West Valley is a fullshade solid patio cover. “A full-shade patio cover provides shade for outdoor living space while allowing you to still enjoy the outdoor weather,” explains Tom. “The full-shade eliminates direct sunlight and will provide shelter from elements such as rain. There are multiple color and cut options to choose from to allow the cover to match your home.” Partial-shade patio covers are also becoming very popular throughout the Valley, says Tom. Partialshade patio covers serve to reduce direct sunlight and you can choose how much shade you would like them to provide, between 60 and 40 percent shade. Similar to the full-shade patio covers, partial-shade patio covers will partially shield you from direct sunlight. They come in a multitude of cuts and colors, notes Tom. If you aren’t looking to add a patio cover, sunrooms and patio enclosures are another great option, says Tom. “An enclosure adds more space for those who want to feel like they are outside while staying protected,” he says. “You can still feel the heat. For those who want to be completely protected, I’d recommend a sunroom.” Sunrooms add additional living space for those who wish to enjoy the outside while being protected from the Valley’s extreme weather, says Tom. If you have trouble deciding what you want, Booth Built’s design consultants can meet with you at your home for a free design consultation and help you figure out which products work best with your home and your vision. — PAID ADVERTISEMENT —
“They will walk you through the process to help you choose a design and quote that fits your budget,” says Tom. To help them decide what would be the best choice for your home, the consultants will ask you many questions in order to get a feel for your ideal backyard living space. Booth Built keeps the installation process as stress-free and seamless as possible by handling all permits to meet and exceed building code standards. They also work closely with homeowners associations and architectural review boards to handle all of the details. “I enjoy transforming people’s yards and making their dreams come true,” says Tom. “I want the customers to have the backyard retreat they’ve always wanted.” To begin your backyard transformation, call Booth Built today at 623-979-3339.

Study: Healthy Heart May Help Men Battle Cancer By Matilda Charles© Men, if ever there was a reason to get exercise, lowering your chance of death from cancer is a good one. You’re not invincible, and exercise can help. Here are a few facts from a study published in the Journal of the American Medical
Association Oncology: • Nearly 14,000 men were included in the study, which initially started in 1971 as a way to track cardiorespiratory fitness. Starting in 2009, researchers began looking at the correlation between fitness and lung, colorectal or prostate cancer.
• Men in midlife (age 50) who had a high fitness level seemed to have a lower risk for colorectal (44 percent) and lung cancer (55 percent). For reasons they don’t yet understand, prostate cancer rates weren’t affected. • Further, a high fitness level offers a 32 percent lower risk of death if there ever is a cancer diagnosis. When it came to cardiovascular disease, there was a 68 percent lower risk of death from that.
• Those who eventually did have a cancer diagnosis had a better outcome (10 percent less likely to die of cancer) if they ran an 11.5-minute mile, as opposed to men who ran a half minute slower. Before you dash out to buy new running shoes, see your doctor for an assessment of your health, and ask for an exercise plan. If your environment isn’t safe for outdoor walking, consider a treadmill.

Exercises Aimed at Seniors The health benefits of daily exercise are widely known, but seniors facing health and mobility issues may feel working out is beyond their abilities. Sixty-three percent of people 60 and older don’t engage in daily exercise, according to the National Council on Aging’s The United States of Aging Survey. But resistance training can
help seniors who fear falling or damaging aging muscles and bones while exercising. For seniors with health issues that might make strenuous exercise difficult, resistance training can be an accessible, healthful option that provides both physical and mental benefits, a new study indicates. As the name implies, resistance training relies on the use
of resistance to build muscle strength. Slow, measured movements are easier and more stable for seniors to perform than the strenuous activity of many types of aerobic exercise. Before starting any kind of exercise program, seniors should talk to their doctors. Once they have the go-ahead to begin resistance training, many forms can be beneficial to seniors. Resistance training can include using resistance bands,
lifting weights or objects around the home, or using exercise equipment. Some of the exercises included in aquatics, Pilates, tai chi and yoga are types of resistance training. Resistance training offers many benefits for seniors, including improved strength, balance, coordination and posture, better bone density, plus lower risks of heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis and other chronic illnesses, as well as improved cognitive function and mood.
