S EXPERIENCE OVER 30 YEAR
By Sam Struckhoff© PICKS OF THE MONTH These hits are now available on DVD and Blu-ray. “American Sniper” (R) — Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper) was the most lethal sniper in American history, serving four tours in Iraq and earning himself the nickname “Legend.” This Clint Eastwood project draws on Kyle’s autobiography to show how war takes its toll, even on those who seem untouchable. The larger political context of the war is kept to the margins, keeping the focus tight on the film’s protagonist. As a story about a man in an extraordinary situation, Eastwood’s direction clenches tight around the heart and hands over a satisfying drama with sledgehammer action sequences. “Cut Bank” (R) — Tucked away in rural Montana, Dwayne (Liam Hemsworth) wants to get himself and his peppy blond girlfriend (Teresa Palmer) out of town, but witnesses a murder instead. By total coincidence, he had his video camera rolling and pointed in the right direction when the town’s first murder takes place in a canola field. Well, maybe it wasn’t a coincidence, and maybe it wasn’t a murder — the plot twists itself into knots, but it’s not a tight fit. JUNE 2015
OF BOOKS NOTE Reviewed By Larry Cox© Stuff Every Groom Should Know By Eric San Juan
GRAND SEASON SUN CITY AREA
JUNE 2015
(Quirk Books, paperback, $9.95.)
With wedding season just around the corner, this nifty little guide couldn’t be published at a more apt time. Eric San Juan, author of several books, including “Stuff Every Husband Should Know,” points out that marriage is a life-changing event, and whether it triggers nervous twitters, excitement or confusion, the best plan is to be prepared. This pocket-sized manual is an ideal guide for navigating one of the most important experiences in a man’s life. It starts with popping the question and covers topics such as planning the wedding and how to survive the big event. The practical advice includes how to choose the right ring, plan a wedding on a budget, pick the right tux, survive the bachelor party and even the essentials that a groom should keep in his pockets. If you’re curious about pocket content, a groom should arm himself — or his best man — with such items as a supply of aspirin, a cellphone, a list of telephone numbers for people such as the vendors, a little cash, a stain-remover pen, camera, breath mints, a handkerchief, lip balm and, yes, the ring. San Juan’s guide is easy to use and filled with useful information that every groom can depend on to navigate through the hazards a proper wedding. With it, grooms can not only survive, but survive intact.

If you’re like the average American, you order meals to take away from restaurants more often than you actually eat inside a restaurant. ••• If you’re a resident of Ohio, please keep in mind that in that state, it is illegal to get undressed in front of a man’s portrait. ••• In 2007, researchers using Google Earth discovered the world’s largest beaver dam. Located in the wilderness of northern Canada, the dam is more than a half-mile long at 2,790 feet; experts estimate the structure was started in the mid-1970s. ••• You’ve probably seen ventriloquists perform, but you may not realize that it’s a skill not limited to humans. The crested bellbird, which can be found in the wetlands of Australia and Venezuela, throws its voice in order to misdirect predators. ••• We’ve all heard the childhood tale of George Washington chopping down a cherry tree, then confessing because he could not tell a lie. Most history books don’t mention other aspects of his childhood, though; for instance, did you know that our first president, when he was 10 years old, was a champion wrestler and long jumper? ••• If you were a member of the middle class in Victorian England, you might have spent an enjoyable afternoon with friends on a boat, searching for bizarre sea creatures. This popular pastime was known as “monster spotting.”

watch pops up in shops and at antique malls and is generally priced in the $25 to $100 range. The higher end price is for the watch in its original box and in mint to near-mint condition. Q: I have a membership card to the Jack Westaway Undersea Adventure Club. What can you tell me about it? I picked it up at a garage sale and paid $5 for it. — Edward, Sun City West, Ariz. A: During the 1930s, the Jack Westaway Undersea Adventure Club was sponsored by Malt-O-Meal. The club badge was shaped like a diving helmet. According to auctioneer Ted Hake, your membership card is worth between $20 and $100, depending, of course, on condition. Q: I have an unopened pack of Hit Parade cigarettes made by the American
Tobacco Company. Does it have any value? — Janet, Oswego, Ill. A: The Cigarette Pack Collectors Association was organized in 1976 and currently has about 100 members scattered throughout the country. The group publishes a newsletter for members, “Brandstand.” This might be a good place to explore the value of your cigarette pack. Contact is 86 Plymouth Grove Drive, Kennebunk, ME 04043; cigpacks@aol.com. Q: I have a porcelain doll that has been in my family since about 1910. The doll needs some repair work. Can you suggest someone who can do this for me? — Katie, Walnut Grove, Ark. A: Dolls & Designs is a business that specializes in dolls repair. Contact is 122 Main St. West, Valdese, NC 28690; www.dollsanddesigns.webs. com; and 828-893-0640. Q: I was given a trinket box by Hummel for my birthday several years ago. It is

Q: I have an old sewing machine that has been in my family for at least a century. It is a “Household” machine. What can you tell me about it? — Sally, Portsmouth, Va. A: The company began as the Providence Tool Company in Providence, Rhode Island. Even in the beginning, the main business was the manufacturing of sewing machines. The company name was changed to Household Sewing Machine in 1890 and continued until about 1906. Write Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. UV Defense Trumps Style When Choosing Shades By David Uffington© Here comes summer ... and the sun’s damaging glare. Do your sunglasses protect your eyes from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays? An American Optometric Association (AOA) survey found that nearly half of us don’t look for the level of UV protection when we buy sunglasses. The short-term effects of UV rays can result in actual sunburn of the eye, called photokeratitis. While the
For Advertising Information Call (623) 594-1630
condition is temporary, the symptoms can be painful: light sensitivity, tearing and a feeling of grit or a foreign body in the eye. Longer-term effects of exposure to UV rays can be much more serious: macular degeneration, cataracts and even cancer of the areas around the eye. Here are some of the AOA guidelines to look for when buying sunglasses: • Choose sunglasses that block 75 percent to 90 percent of visible light and at
least 99 percent of UV-A and UV-B rays. • Pick sunglasses that closely fit your face to keep UV rays from reaching your eyes from the side. • Avoid sunglasses where the lenses don’t exactly match in color or that have distortions. And don’t forget the kids. Their eyes are much more vulnerable to harmful effects of UV rays. Get them in the habit of wearing sunglasses when outdoors. Here are some terms to help you understand the different types of lenses. • Blue blocking: Good for seeing distant objects in snow or haze.
JUNE 2015
Make sure sunglasses protect your eyes from the sun.
• Photochromic lenses: Lighten and darken according to the light around you. • Polarized lenses: Reduce the glare from water or snow. • Gradient tint: Darker at the top and lighter at the bottom.

Study: Seniors Jubilant After Cleaning House By Matilda Charles© Seniors feel better after cleaning the house, according to a study done by the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing. Who knew? Researchers looked at various influences on a senior’s health and emotional well-being, such as environment, smoking, income, education, health, socioeconomics and exercise. The participants (ages 65 to 94) had one serious illness, were enrolled in both Medicaid and Medicare,
and had physical limitations that kept them from at least one daily task, such as bathing, handling medications or dressing. What the researchers didn’t expect was that doing housework and maintaining their own property had more of an impact on seniors than, for example, neighborhood poverty. They were able to prove what they’d seen: Seniors who lived in a neat and tidy environment were more satisfied than
those whose environment was chaotic. I saw something similar when I helped a frail neighbor clean out her pantry. While roomy, the pantry was a jumble of items stacked on top of one another amid outdated, expired food. It was difficult to even write a grocery list because it was impossible to tell at a glance what she had. Once the pantry was neat and organized, she was delighted, and when I saw her again, she had started on the magazines and newspapers that were piled high on every flat surface, managing to take small armloads to the recycling bin outside her back door. She was quite proud of
Seniors who live in a clean home feel more satisfied, according to one study.
her accomplishment. The lesson here: With a small amount of effort, we can keep our environment neat (and safer) ... and the exercise is good for us.

If you add a teaspoon of sugar to your biscuit mix or to the dough for rolls, it will help them to brown well, and they should come out of the oven with golden tops. ••• Add a cinnamon stick or softener sheet to your vacuum bag when you change it. While you clean, you’ll distribute the good smell throughout your home. ••• Two ways to save money on laundry expenses: First, spring and summer are an excellent time to get into line-drying clothes — especially towels and jeans that take longer to dry thoroughly in a dryer. Then, clean out and shorten your dryer’s vent hose to make your machine more energy efficient. It cuts down on drying time, too, saving you time and money. ••• Got an odd job coming up? Before you go out and purchase an expensive limited-use tool, check with friends and neighbors to see if you can borrow instead of buying. Check with local hardware stores to see if it’s cheaper to rent, too. ••• Plastic grocery bags always come in handy. Try storing them in empty tissue boxes for the car or bathroom, or use an empty 12-pack soda box for more storage under your kitchen sink or in the garage. ••• This is a classic money-saving tip as well as safety advice: Lower your water-heater temperature from 140 degrees to 120 degrees. You’ll save money on heating water, and reduce the risk of a painful burn from scalding. ••• Add a small bit of boiling water to a glass of iced tea to clear it up if it is cloudy. You can do this to a pitcher just before serving.

Quesadilla is a Spanish word for “little cheese thing.” The recipe typically calls for mounds of cheese and pork chorizo between two corn tortillas. Although there’s just a small amount of cheese in this recipe, it’s the lean ground chicken and the spices that are the stars of this healthy dish. The substitution of lean ground chicken breast for pork chorizo cuts down on the calories without sacrificing any of the flavor. Chorizo sausage is usually made with ground pork and combined with fat, wine, paprika and salt and stuffed into a casing made of tripe. Paprika and red chiles are the primary spices in Mexican chorizo and infuse it with a deep reddish color. This recipe uses the same spices as the pungent Mexican sausage to marinate the

Step 1. Combine the chicken, chile powder, salt, pepper, bay leaf, cinnamon, Italian seasoning, cloves and vinegar in a bowl, mix well. Set aside. Step 2. Boil the potato in lightly salted water in a saucepan until tender, drain. Heat 1 teaspoon canola oil in a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Saute the chicken mixture, stirring to break up the pieces, until the chicken is almost cooked through. Step 3. Add the potato,
onion and remaining canola oil, cook until the potatoes begin to brown. Remove from heat and mash mixture. Top each of 4 tortillas with an equal amount of chicken mixture. Top with shredded Cheddar cheese, then another tortilla. Spray a griddle or nonstick skillet with non-stick cooking spray. Step 4. Cook the Quesadillas over medium heat until both sides are crisp, turning once. Makes 4 servings.

For a window into the old days of Phoenix, spend a memorable evening at Durant’s, one of Arizona’s most famous watering holes. Enter by way of the restaurant’s unofficial entrance, “Goodfellas” style, through the back door. You’ll pass the iconic L-shaped bar, where previous patrons included Marilyn Monroe, Joe DiMaggio and John Wayne. A combination of old Hollywood and gangster lore, the 65-year-old downtown Phoenix landmark was a favorite for local politicians who liked to mingle with business powerbrokers over lunch. A former pit boss for gangster Bugsy Siegel at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, James E. “Jack” Durant left the city after Siegel’s murder in 1947. Jack “Swede” McElroy, a local business man, invited Durant to Phoe-
nix with the promise of backing him in the opening of a new restaurant and bar. Durant managed the establishment until his death in 1987. Today, Durant’s is still a family-owned business with Carol McElroy, Jack McElroy’s daughter-in-law, as the current owner and manager. Each meal, just like it did in 1950, begins with a cold relish tray featuring carrots, celery and radishes, along with a salad topped with Durant’s signature bluecheese dressing. Although the menu has been updated over the years to reflect changing tastes, Durant’s continues to be primarily a steakhouse, in keeping with the founder’s philosophy that “Good friends, great steaks and the best booze are the necessities of life.” Begin your adventure with

If you’re up for the challenge, you’ll be in the company of pro football players and even an 8-year-old girl who polished off the steak to fuel up for her soccer game the following day. Side dishes are sold separately, but they are very tasty with your choices of asparagus, stuffed baked potato, crab macaroni and cheese, sautéed mushrooms and more. Shedding Light on Solar Power More and more Americans are making the switch to solar powering their homes. In 2014, the U.S. added more than 186,000 individual residential solar installations, according to GTM Research. With this rising home trend, make sure you know fact from fiction by rethinking these common myths about what it means to “go solar”: • Myth No. 1: Solar systems must receive constant sunshine to power a home. Actually, ultraviolet (UV) rays that power solar systems can peak through even on the cloudiest days. • Myth No. 2: Solar panels take away from the “curb appeal” of the home. With more of today’s homeowners choosing to go solar, there are more options than ever to make the panels blend seamlessly with the aesthetics of your home and roofing. Today’s solar power systems can be combined with slate, metal, and asphalt roofing, to ensure a smooth transition to your home. • Myth No. 3: Installing and financing a solar system is too expensive. Installing a solar system on your home is more affordable than ever. Through residential solar leasing models offered today, the barriers of going solar are broken down through solar system installations with no upfront costs and as little as $0 down.
Solar panels can blend in seamlessly with your home.

Fill Your Home with Quality, American-Made Furnishings from
Family-owned and operated Furniture Solutions, has been furnishing homes across the West Valley for nearly 20 years. The store offers a wide selection of American-made furniture, including sofas, sectionals and recliners. Pictured from left to right are Jose Trevino, David Monsalove, Eric Copp, owner Wendy Fortner, Brittney Moore, Margie Martin and Nancy Borkiewicz. Look around the two showrooms at Furniture Solutions and you’ll soon discover the superior quality of the different styles, sizes and finishes the home furnishings store has to offer. Whether you’re looking for a new bedroom set, dining room set, living room set, or just a new lamp to put in any of those rooms, Furniture Solutions has the items to bring out the best in your home. Family-owned and operated Furniture Solutions, located at 15472 N. 99th Ave., Suite 3, in Sun City, has been furnishing homes across the West Valley with moderately-priced, mostly American-made furniture since 1995. Furniture Solutions owner Wendy Fortner literally grew up in the home furnishings industry and still does business the old fashioned way. “My parents owned several stores and I worked in many as a buyer, manager and salesperson,” she explains. “I recognize each customer individually and treat them equally as important, whether they’re purchasing a lamp or enough furniture to fill an entire home. Every sale counts and every customer is valued.” Furniture Solutions offers a wide
selection of American-made sofas and sectionals, leather or fabric upholstered, reclining and stationary. “We always have something that appeals to everyone and every budget,” says Fortner. “From contemporary and southwestern to traditional and transitional, we have your furniture solutions!” If you’re looking for a top-ofthe-line recliner, Furniture Solutions sells those, as well. “We have recliners for the very small and for those who are bigger and tall,” says Fortner. “We offer manually-operated and powered recliners, wall hugger recliners, swivel rocker recliners, and swivel gliders and gliding recliners.” Furniture Solutions also carries television console and entertainment centers, accent pieces, occasional tables,
pictures and other accessories. “Our mission is to help retirees with their entire home furnishing needs,” says Fortner. “We not only offer a wide array of well-priced, quality home furnishings and accessories, but we can assist our customers in disposing of their unwanted furniture.” Furniture Solutions also offers in-home delivery and set up, home decorating services and the lowest sales tax in the Valley, adds Fortner. Fortner says many customers mostly focus on how furniture looks, but she encourages customers to also focus on how furniture feels. While Furniture Solutions sells a vast array of furniture, if customers still can’t find what they need in the store, there is a large selection available in catalogs and through various websites, and custom and special orders
“We fit you to the furniture like a tailor does a suit,” says Fortner. “And then we fit the furniture to your home, for many years of comfort and beauty.”
can be provided at a great price.“We don’t want customers spending too much money and we offer a price guarantee on everything we sell,” adds Fortner. Furniture Solutions is known for having a unique selection, great quality, excellent customer service and satisfied customers. “One of the comments I hear most often is that if we didn’t sell such great quality furniture, our customers would be back to buy more furniture more often,” says Fortner. Furniture Solutions offers a larger selection of furniture than the big box stores in the area, notes Fortner. “We have an amazing selection of fabrics and wood finishes, and can fit something for everyone’s needs,” she says. “We also don’t have any high-pressure salespeople on our staff, only nice and knowledgeable experts to assist you with your decorating needs.” Furniture Solutions is located in the Greenway Terrace Shopping Center and is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To make an appointment, call 623-486-0333. Customers are also encouraged to visit www.furnituresolutionsaz.com.

HOLLYWOOD No sooner did Matt Damon get back from Mars, where he filmed “The Martian” with Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara, Kristen Wiig and Jeff Daniels (in theaters Nov. 25), than he started fighting Matt Damon mythical creatures attacking the earth at the Great Wall of China, aided by Willem Dafoe. Set in the 15th century, “The Great Wall” escapes Nov. 23, 2016. Woody Allen’s next film, “Irrational Man,” stars Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone and Parker Posey. Phoenix plays a philosophy professor having a relationship with one of his students (Stone). It’s due out July 17. Jon Stewart’s last “Daily
By Tony Rizzo© Show” episode will air Aug. 8. Stewart wrote, produced and directed the $5 million to $10 million film “Rosewater” with Gael Garcia Bernal, and even though it was well-received by critics, it made only $3.1 million at movie theaters. Stewart is leaving his show so he’ll have more time to direct films. He’ll be replaced by 31-year-old South African stand-up comic and TV personality Trevor Noah. Hugh Jackman has announced “Wolverine 3,” planned for 2017, will be his final “Wolverine.” Bradley Cooper keeps cranking out films. Currently on screens in Cameron Crowe’s “Aloha,” with Stone, Rachel McAdams, Bill Murray, John Krasinski and Alec Baldwin, he has “Adam Jones” coming out Oct. 2. Cooper plays a chef who assembles a crew trying to create the best restaurant ever.

Haymaker Restaurant Offers Midwestern Comfort Food and Other Culinary Creations By Roberta Meehan© Are you looking for a restaurant that’s great for the family, perfect for the big game and wonderful for a date, while still being just right for breakfast, lunch or dinner? Well, just follow your nose to the enticing aroma emanating from one of Joey Lucidi’s Haymaker restaurants. The technical name for these palaces of palatable food delights is The Haymaker Restaurant Company, but the local name is simply Haymaker. The West Valley is fortunate enough to have two Haymaker locations — the first restaurant at 24762 N. Lake Pleasant Parkway in Peoria, which opened in October 2013; and a second at 1800 N. Litchfield Road in Goodyear, which opened last year. A third location is scheduled to open at the intersection of Tatum and Bell in Phoenix in July, notes Joey. Haymaker is a family-owned and operated business and Joey comes by his food management skills quite naturally. His parents owned 11 restaurants in San Diego (and earlier in Michigan) and he says that he literally did his school homework sitting in the back of the restaurants. While Joey was in college, he took a break from the family trade and earned a degree in business and marketing. “I soon realized, however, that my passion was for food — the neighborhood grill, the family restaurant with something special,” he says. Before opening Haymaker, Joey worked at some recognized national chain restaurants, doing a little bit of everything, he

says. That experience, along with his college studies and family background, makes it easy to see how the Haymaker concept got its start. The Lucidi family is proud of the food at Haymaker; it is good, wholesome and plentiful. The meals are reasonably priced and appealing. The pricing is also enticing for seniors on a limited budget. “Much of the breakfast crowd on any given day is composed of seniors,” says Joey. The menu at the Haymaker offers a wide variety of foods and something for all tastes, from meat lovers to vegetarians. Vegetarian options (such as veggie patties) can be substituted for meat at no additional cost, notes Joey. Another bonus is that the menu is not complicated to understand, even with its exciting creations. The menu comes from a family grill that, to quote Joey, “offers both Midwestern comfort food and interesting in-house culinary creations.” At Haymaker, breakfasts are made on-site, almost all from scratch, except for the breads, which are all fresh-baked from local bakeries. Examples of breakfast dishes include California and Arizona omelettes, Haymaker Benedict and huevos rancheros. The restaurant is open for breakfast 7-10:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, and 7-11:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. The meats served for lunch and dinner (beef, pork and chicken) are fresh and never frozen, says Joey. Examples of lunch and dinner items include burgers and sandwiches of many varieties, teriyaki bistroloin bowl, St. Louis ribs and Joey’s

Joey Lucidi opened the first Haymaker Restaurant Company location (24762 N. Lake Pleasant Parkway in Peoria) in October 2013. primavera. There are also specials for seniors. The Haymaker closes for dinner at 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Much of the advertising for Haymaker is done by word-of-mouth, says Joey. Nonetheless, two of the other successful marketing devices used by the restaurant are coupons, which generally promote a summer item, and the burger of the month, which is a yearround specialty. If a burger of the month is highly successful, it could become a part of the regular menu, notes Joey. Children eat for free on Wednesdays at Haymaker. Also, the restaurant offers a different dinner special every night of the week. “Some menu items are exceptionally popular,” says Joey. “For instance, the Peoria restaurant serves between 35 and 40 pounds of
pulled pork per night.” In addition to the menu being the same at all Haymaker locations, so too is the basic restaurant decor. For instance, all Haymaker locations have a “Buffy” — a buffalo head mounted on the wall of the bar, which is made out of brick. Furthermore, “each bar has the best selection of whiskey in the Phoenix area,” says Joey. Also, written on the walls at each Haymaker location, boldly and proudly, are the “Pledge of Allegiance” and “Grace before Meals.” Joey says, “This restaurant company firmly believes in God, country and family.” For more information on The Haymaker Restaurant Company, call 623-5661515 (Peoria) or 623-5369000 (Goodyear), or visit www.haymakeraz.com. On June 15, 1215, following a revolt by the English nobility, King John puts his royal seal on the Magna Carta, or “Great Charter.” The document guaranteed that the king would respect feudal rights and privileges, uphold the freedom of the church and maintain the nation’s laws. On June 17, 1994, after a dramatic “low-speed chase” on Interstate 405 witnessed by millions on live television, former football star and actor O.J. Simpson surrenders to Los Angeles police. He was charged in the double-murder of his ex-wife and her friend. On June 18, 1812, the War of 1812 against Great Britain begins. The American war declaration had been called in response to the British economic sanctions against the U.S. and the impressment of American seamen into the British Royal Navy. On June 21, 1982, John W. Hinckley, Jr., who on March 30, 1981, shot President Ronald Reagan outside a Washington, D.C., hotel, is found not guilty of attempted murder by reason of insanity.

As you grow older, being physically active is one of the most important things you can do to stay healthy. Whether you’re well into your golden years, a baby boomer or younger, studies show regular exercise can lower your risk of heart disease, some cancers, diabetes and dementia. It also helps improve your mood and energy level. “The great thing is, no matter what your age, size or fitness level, it’s never too late to start exercising,” says Dr. Jaza Marina, a geriatrician based in Atlanta. She advises good ways to exercise include low-impact aerobic activity, swimming, tai chi and yoga if you’re physically able. “I know 80-year-olds who run 5k or 10k races. Everyone is different, so pick an exercise that you enjoy,” says Dr. Marina. Below are four basic exercises to get you started: 1. Knee bends: Holding on to a sturdy chair or counter at your side, keep your back straight, feet on the ground and gently bend your knees and lower your body. Then, raise your body back up. It’s

Let Family-Operated Sun City Roofing Find a Solution to Your Roofing Problems By Roberta Meehan© Do you have problems with your roof? Are you missing shingles or pieces of tile? How is your urethane roof? Has your flat roof been properly sealed? When was your roof — regardless of type — last inspected? Depending on how you answered the questions above, it could be time for you to call Sun City Roofing, a family-owned and operated enterprise run by Joe Watson and his sons George, James and Joe Jr. The Watsons, who together have more than 30 years’ experience in the roofing industry, pride themselves in their reputation and customer service. Sun City Roofing has an A-plus rating with the Better Business Bureau and is listed on Angie’s
List. “Potential customers want credibility and experience. We’ve got both,” says George Watson. Sun City Roofing works with all types of roofs and all types of roofing problems, including roofs that have sun lights and/ or solar panels. Arizona’s weather can be brutal on roofs, particularly here in the Valley, notes George. “The roof is an integral part of any structure,” he explains. “That includes not only houses but also roofs on any functional building. “Horrendous heat followed by rain or monsoons and then followed by more heat can wreak havoc on any roof and, if there is a problem with the roof, that problem can spread
Time for a new roof?
Arizona’s hot summers and monsoons can cause major damage to your roofs exterior and underlayment. Don’t wait until you have a leak, call Sun City Roofing to inspect your homes roof today! Winter residents should have their roof checked to help prevent costly repairs.

to any part of the building’s infrastructure,” he continues. “Damage can then occur to the underlayment, the insulation, the drywall, the wood frame, or the stucco — in addition to whatever is inside the building. This is especially true of water damage. People tend to think of roof problems in terms of leaks, but the underlying problem may have to do with improper pipe and vent flashings, broken tiles, or improper underlayment installation, to name a few.” Most roofs in Arizona are classified as tile, shingle or urethane. Flat roofs are most likely to be urethane (technically called elastomeric), while tiles and shingles are more common on vaulted roofs. Sheet metal roofing is also an option and should be discussed separately with an appropriate roofer, suggests George. The tiles used in tile roofing are usually clay, sandcast or concrete. These tiles have an underlayment of felt, which could be organic. “This felt, which is what actually provides the waterproofing, decays and must be replaced every 12–20
years,” says George. “Sometimes sooner.” Shingles, which come in numerous styles, qualities, and colors, are normally made of an organic or fiberglass material that has been saturated with asphalt and then coated with various weather-resistant minerals. In general, both tiles and shingles weather about the same, and in both cases, the weathering properties depend on the base materials used, notes George. Urethane (also called polyurethane) roofs keep best, but the urethane must be coated every seven years in order to prevent weather damage, suggests George. “As an advantage, urethane is also very lightweight and thus adds little to the external force or pressure on the structure,” he explains. “Polyurethane, in its spray form, can also be used effectively to repair existing roofing systems.” Regardless of the type of roofing one has, Sun City Roofing recommends a 10-year check-up for every roof. This should be done more frequently

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

Turn a Bad Dog Into an Obedient Pooch Is your dog bad to the bone? Does your sweet Jack Russel guard all doors from intruders -- friends and family included? Or is it your boxer puppy that won’t stop shredding socks and underwear? Some of the cutest pooches have the worst
manners. Whether you’re at work or just in another room, their mischievous play may lead to anything from home repairs to staggering vet bills. If you are a frustrated pet owner, here are five dog-training tips:
1. Proper exercise is key: A majority of behavior issues stem from a lack of proper exercise. At least one 30-minute walk per day is sufficient for most dogs. Playing in the backyard or in the house does not count as exercise. 2. Buy a dog backpack for walks: This allows your dog to have a job and adds weight with objects like water bottles or hand weights so the dog expends
more energy. 3. Challenge your dog with brain puzzles: A mentally tired dog will not spend time thinking about how to get in the garbage or waste breath yipping at neighbors. 4. Take a training class: Getting your dog to respect you is critical to having your dog listen to you. 5. Send your dog to a camp or hire someone to take Fido on a walk. A tired dog can be a good dog.
