The Mystery Writers of America Cookbook Edited by Kate White (Quirk Books, $24.95.)
This wickedly delightful cookbook features more than 100 recipes contributed by such legendary mystery authors as Sandra Brown, J.A. Jance, Sue Grafton and Mary Higgins Clark. In addition to the recipes, there are full-color illustrations, mischievous sidebars revealing links between food and foul play, and dozens of fun facts, such as lethal plants found in the family garden. The cookbook’s recipes are divided into seven main sections: Breakfast, Appetizers, Soups & Salads, Entrees, Side Dishes, Desserts and Cocktails. Kate White, former editor in chief at Cosmopolitan and The New York Times’ best-selling author of the Bailey Weggins mystery series, offers insights and facts about major fictional characters. Whether it’s a hard-boiled breakfast, thrilling entree or cozy dessert, no one knows as much about the importance of stomach contents as these illustrious members of the Mystery Writers of America. Among the recipes are James Patterson’s Grandma’s Killer Chocolate Cake, Sue Grafton’s Peanut Butter & Pickle Sandwich, Nelson DeMille’s Male Chauvinist Pigs in a Blanket and Alison Gaylin’s Smoking Gun Margarita. Whether you’re planning a sinister dinner party or simply looking to whip up some comfort food, this cunning collection could just be the solution. For Advertising Information Call (623) 594-1630

C OUCH THEATRE By Sam Struckhoff© PICKS OF THE MONTH These hits are now available on DVD and Blu-ray. “Timbuktu” (PG-13) — In the rolling dunes of Mali, alongside centuries-old cultural artifacts, families face the threat of fundamentalism forcing its way into the rhythm of life. Kidane (Ibrahim Ahmed) lives simply, herding livestock with his wife, daughter and an adopted child who helps with the work. The pastoral scene is infested with newly arrived clerics and heavily-armed young men enforcing rules against everything from music and clothing to soccer and socializing. Director Abderrahmane Sissako creates an enchanting portrayal of fully realized, authentic-feeling characters. It’s a movie that radiates importance and love for life, without burdening the audience with heavy-handed delivery. “Old Fashioned” (PG-13) — Clay runs an antique shop in a Midwestern college town where a spontaneous young woman stops her car. Clay was once a lusty lad in a fraternity, but is now a 30-something who espouses the virtues of chivalry and chastity. Oh, how charming, you may think at this point. However you feel about dating, Clay is a blowhard. He pontificates about lust in the most un-cute, self-righteous way. As you watch, you hope dearly that the young woman realizes what’s going on and gets back in her car. TV SERIES • “Ripper Street” Third Season • “Newsroom” Third Season

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You’re still in the race to pick up new workplacerelated goodies. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Be sure to balance your workload with your personal life so that you don’t overdo it on one end or the other. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A former critic could make a surprise turnaround and become a supporter. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Data on a new project seems less than dependable. But it might turn out to be just the opposite. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Capricorneans face many decisions this month, with the Sea Goat’s kids rating high on the consideration scale. Decorate Garden With Bugs That Don’t Bite By Donna Erickson© Here’s a playful way to bring decorative fun to your garden with bugs that don’t bite. It’s an after-lunch activity, because these giant bugs are created using your recycled plastic plates! First, set out and do some exploring in the yard or even under your picnic table, and challenge your grandchildren to look for bugs in all shapes and sizes. Keep an eye on insects flying by, too. Decide which one is your favorite, and then make your own giant-size version with a few art supplies and those rinsed-off plastic plates. Here’s how: On the middle of a large and sturdy disposable plastic plate, draw an outline of the shape of your chosen bug or insect, such as a ladybug, worm, butterfly or bee. Use a black permanent paint pen or marker. To help guide you and your grandchild with the design, use clip art or coloring books for a pattern, if you wish. Cut it out with scissors. Paint the bug or insect using acrylic paints in squeeze bottles and small brushes. If you use a colored plate, you won’t have to paint it all. For
TUBULAR SKYLIGHTS
example, if you make a ladybug, use a red plate and add spots and a few other details using a black marker. While the garden decorations dry, go on a stick safari and look for sturdy 18-to-24inch-long sticks. Use strong electrical tape to attach one end of the stick to the critter. Poke the other end into the ground where your grandchild would like his or her bug or insect to “live.” Extra tip: If you’d like to create simple backyard pests to decorate stationery or postcards, apply lipstick or poster paint to your grandchild’s thumb. Make a thumbprint on the paper or postcard. Use a marker to add antennae, legs and eyes. Name the pest and then write a letter to a friend or relative. Address it together, add a stamp and send it via “snail” mail.

Save Money on Groceries By Matilda Charles© Many seniors on a fixed income have problems affording groceries. The National Institute on Aging has some helpful tips on how to save on your grocery bills. • Read the weekly sales flyers and try to plan your menu around what’s featured. Pick up a few extras, but only if they are sale items you’d normally buy or will use before the expiration date. • Clip coupons and use them. Try store brands —

it might surprise you that they’re comparable to name brands. • Reconsider whether to buy convenience foods. Instant hot cereals, rice, entrees and soups will cost you more. • Divide bulk purchases with a neighbor, and both of you can save money. If chicken is on sale and you both take half, you’ll have enough for a few meals and can freeze the rest. You can do the same with anything that comes in large packages or that contains
more than you’ll eat before it expires. • Keep an eye on unit pricing. Bigger isn’t always cheaper. • Shop for foods that are nutrient-dense: seafood and lean meats, vegetables, fruit and whole grains. Spend your money there before you buy snack foods. • Consider free or lowcost meals: Some senior centers often host a monthly luncheon for a reduced price. If you qualify for Meals on Wheels, those can go a long way to stretching your food budget. If you qualify for the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program,

King James VI of Scotland was also, after the crowns of England and Scotland were united in 1603, King James I of England. He may have been doubly noble, but those who study such things say that his personal habits would not have been out of place in a commoner of the time period. He reportedly never bathed, claiming that baths were an unhealthy practice, and he would wear the same clothes for months on end. ••• Three of the first five presidents of the United States — John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe — died on July 4. ••• Fans of the long-running sitcom “Scrubs” will be familiar with the main character, Dr. John “J.D.” Dorian, and his best friend, Dr. Christopher Turk. You might not realize, though, that the actors who played those roles — Zach Braff and Donald Faison — also are best friends in real life. ••• Taking the stairs may be good for your cardiovascular health, but there are dangers you might not know of. In an average year, approximately 27 people are killed while using an elevator, while 1,600 die while taking the stairs. ••• The game of tag may seem like an innocent children’s pastime, but in some countries it has a sinister undertone. In Italy, players pretend that anyone getting tagged has caught the black plague. In Madagascar, leprosy is the contagion that is being supposedly spread by the game, while in Spain, it’s relatively harmless fleas.

Small Dog Dental Care Requires Extra Attention While Labradors have topped the American Kennel Club’s list of popular dogs for more than two decades, small dogs are gaining ground. Out of the top ten breeds, four — Yorkshire terriers, dachshunds, miniature poodles, and shih tzus — are small breeds. The dog that made the largest jump in popularity 2009? The Havanese, which weighs between seven and 13 pounds. Small dogs make great companions for a reason. Many are smart, personable and ideally sized for smaller homes. But small dogs do come with special needs, and owners should be aware of them. For example, due to the small size of their mouths, dogs under 20 pounds have a greater risk of dental problems.
Owners of small dogs should be extra diligent about their pets’ oral hygiene. Scheduling regular check-ups can help vets catch problems in tooth and jaw development. Those with puppies should pay attention when their dogs start losing their milk teeth. If
adult teeth don’t emerge from the gums, there could be a problem requiring a vet visit. Adult dog owners should examine their dogs’ gums for signs of infection, like discoloration or bleeding. Abnormalities may be signs of periodontal disease, which requires treatment by a veterinarian. Prevention is just as important as detection. Brushing pets’ teeth daily is one of the best ways to maintain oral health.

Not every car owner intends to keep their vehicle forever. But if you plan to keep a vehicle for less than five years, resale value should be an important consideration. There’s an old saying that a car loses 30 percent of its value as soon as it’s driven off the sales lot. While that’s true to an extent, it’s difficult to attach an exact number. The standard for car
depreciation is that all cars, in general, lose about 15 to 20 percent of their value each year. A car buying service can help you decide which models are going to retain their value the best. Before purchasing a vehicle, make sure to research which makes, models, trim levels and options tend to have the highest residual and resale values. For example,

choose a conservative color and ensure the vehicle has features such as ABS, airbags, electric windows and adjustable steering. While you own the vehicle, keep in mind that caring for your car is just as important as choosing wisely. It is recommend that you follow your owner’s manual for suggested maintenance intervals. To help your vehicle retain most of its value, remember to: • Fix dents, scratches and dings as soon as possible to prevent more serious problems down the line. • Follow the proper maintenance schedule and keep all receipts. • If you receive notice of a recall, complete all repairs. • Make sure your vehicle is washed and detailed regularly, and avoid smoking and eating inside the vehicle. • Keep annual mileage low (average is 13,500 per year). Aside from obvious essential features in Arizona, such as air conditioning, resale value also is improved if the vehicle has an automatic transmission, leather seats, moonroof and rearentertainment system. Car buying experts caution against adding too many features: appearance packages, such as pinstripes or graphics; chrome wheels; satellite radio; telematics devices; and autodimming mirrors. When it comes time to find a new home for your vehicle, determine which option would provide the best value: Trading it in or selling it to a private party. If you decide to sell your vehicle, keep in mind that auto sales tend to be highest in March and April. Selling your vehicle in September or October is the least-desirable time because of an influx of used-car inventory from companies that dispose older vehicles in preparation for newer models. Go Green With Your Laundry
WE BEAT THE BIG BOX STORES!
Laundry’s one of those never-ending chores, and it does more than eat into your schedule. According to EnergyStar, the average household does 400 loads of laundry each year, consuming 13,500 gallons of water in the process. Those clothes need to be dried; the U.S. Department of Energy says that the average household spends $70 a year just to operate dryers. And that’s before the waste created by detergent bottles and the environmental effects of phosphates, which create destructive algae blooms, are considered. Here are some ways you can save money and the environment while you do your laundry: • Try air drying your clothes: Your dryer is the second largest energy hog in your home after your
refrigerator. Even if you only cut back on drying once in a while, you’ll end up saving money. Try using a clothesline or a drying rack instead. Dry similar types of clothing together. Bath towels will take longer to dry than synthetic fabrics, so make sure they don’t touch when you put them out to dry. • Only wash full loads of laundry: Washing one large load uses less energy than washing two smaller loads, even if you wash the small loads on low or medium settings. • Use lower temperature settings: Wash clothes using warm or cold water instead of hot, and use cold water for all rinses. You may find that presoaking heavily soiled or greasy clothing will allow you to wash out stains with a lower temperature of water.

Men, Women Experience Retirement Differently
AIRPORT SHUTTLE SERVICE
What’s retirement like? The answer may depend upon whether you’re a man or a woman. Women report more positive experiences in retirement than men, yet also say they are more likely to experience negative emotions, according to a study conducted by MassMutual. The study’s findings have implications for retirement planning, both financially and emotionally. The study surveyed 905 retir-

Women report having more positive experiences in retirement.
ees within 15 years after retirement and 912 pre-retirees within 15 years before retirement. The responses for both groups were evenly split between men and women and respondents had a minimum of $50,000 in retirement savings. One in five women is at least moderately stressed in retirement compared to 15 percent of men, the study finds. Women also are more likely to feel frustrated, sad, lonely and nervous. Before retirement, women are much more likely than men to report being stressed. The study finds that 49 percent of women pre-retirees say they are at least moderately stressed compared to 38 percent of men pre-retirees. Though whether you are a man or a woman, saving for retirement contributes to positive emotions and experiences in retirement. Those who have a 401(k) or other retirement savings plan were more likely to report experiencing positive emotions as compared to those who did not. Of the retirement plan participants, 74 percent say they are “extremely” or “quite a bit” happy compared to 68 percent who did not participate in a retirement plan. In the years before retirement, women have markedly higher expectations than men for enjoying the social aspects of retirement and somewhat lower expectations for their financial fortunes. During retirement, women report having less free time than men and yet are more likely to have new experiences, find more time for friends, and enjoy more opportunities.

V ET’S POST It used to be that a veteran could literally put a name and phone number on a piece of paper, write a line or two about wanting to file a claim, and the Department of Veterans Affairs would be responsible for getting in touch to help fill out a form. The start date began when that first correspondence was received, and the veteran had a year to finish sending the information. Now back-of-the-envelope filing is no more. As of March, claims must follow a set of new requirements and be on specific forms to be considered. As a result, a second lawsuit has been filed against the VA. Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars have added their voices to a suit filed earlier by the American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America, AMVETS and the National Veterans
By Freddy Groves© Legal Services Program. Their objection: Veterans who can’t access the online forms or who cannot fill them out not only lose benefits, but lose the start date on the claim. Best advice: Find someone to help you go online and start a file, either a VSO, your grandchild, the chaplain at your American Legion Post or your attorney’s secretary. You’ll then have a year to complete the information. Online, look for Form 21-0966, which is your Intent to File. Fill it out and send to your regional benefits office. Then you’ll need Form 21-526EZ, the form for officially filing your claim. If that’s impossible right now, call the VA at 1-800-8271000 and say that you intend to file. They’ll have to take your initial information over the phone. You then have a year to follow up.

How to Find a Wall Stud Finding a wall stud is often a necessary but frustrating task. If you plan to hang a heavy picture frame, a television mount or a shelf, then it is essential that you secure it to the wall with nails or screws that penetrate into not only the drywall but also a stud. Before searching for a wall stud, keep in mind that they are usually positioned on 16-inch centers; in rare cases, they are on 24-inch centers. Also, electrical outlets and switch boxes are normally nailed to one side of a stud. One easy way to find a stud is to look for drywall nail/screw dimples in the wall. If you look carefully enough, you can see them. Another easy way to find a stud is to look closely at the baseboard trim. See where the finished nails are located in the trim. If the finish carpenter was worth his salt, the finish nails are located on the wall studs.
Similarly, if chair rail or crown molding is installed on the wall, look for the finish nail locations on the molding. Again, the molding should be fastened to the wall with finish nails that are secured into wall studs. You also can measure from the corner of a room to find a wall stud location, with the knowledge that studs are usually located on 16-inch centers. This method doesn’t always work, because most rooms are not divisible by 16 inches. However, when rough framers construct a wall, they usually start at one end of the wall and add additional studs every 16 inches along the length of it. If the above solutions do not yield results in finding a stud, take a magnet of any type and gently run it along the surface of the wall until it sticks to the wall. When it does, you’ll know the magnet is directly over a drywall nail or screw that is secured to a stud.

Summer is a great time to ditch the gym and take your workouts outside to help you get into shape. Here are some tips to help you stay in shape and maximize your workouts this season: • Be resourceful — no gym, no problem: Enjoy the sunshine and your surroundings. Try taking your workout to the nearest park where there is a bench. Work your triceps, shoulders and core with bench dips — sit on a bench and place your hands next to your hips, palms facing down. Slide your butt forward off of the bench and bend your elbows, bringing upper arms almost parallel to ground, then return to the starting position. Keep your lower back close to the bench and complete 12 reps. For an added upper body workout, do pushups with your hands on the bench with legs fully extended for 12 reps, and then flip over for an inverted push up — hands on the ground and feet extended on the bench for an additional 12 reps. • Hydrate: Dehydration can decrease strength, reduce endurance and delay muscle response. When you sweat you lose more than just water, so
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids with electrolytes.
make sure to drink fluids with electrolytes. • Travel smart: When you’re on the road, maintaining a workout routine can be difficult. Keep your workout regimen alive. Remember that even small steps count. Book a hotel room at least a few floors up and take the stairs. Or, if you’re limited to lower levels, do calf raises in the elevator. • Say no to excuses: Prioritize fitness so excuses can’t get in the way. In the early morning hours, you are less likely to be bothered by phone calls and emails. Get your workout in early while enjoying the beautiful sunrise, and then you can get on with your day and feel accomplished, knowing you’ve already checked breaking a sweat off your list.

Anacapa Restaurant Builds Reputation on Exceptional Food and Top-Notch Service By Carisa Frisby© Do you enjoy fine dining? Are you looking for cuisine that’s a little more unique? Do you enjoy the ambiance of a country club but don’t live within a country club community? If you answered yes to all three questions, Anacapa Restaurant is the place for you. Anacapa, located in the Corte Bella Country Club in Sun City West, is conveniently open to the public. Boasting amazing views of the golf course, this homeowner’s association-owned restaurant provides patrons with a different, more elegant type of dining atmosphere. In addition to the views
and luxurious setting at Anacapa, the staff provides top-notch service. For instance, it’s not unusual for the staff to greet returning customers by name, making patrons feel welcome and at home. Running the kitchen is executive chef Dan Haywood, who has more than 25 years of culinary expertise and experience. “I started locally at the Scottsdale Culinary Institute and then worked for the Boulders Resort as a pantry cook working up to sous chef,” says Haywood. “I then moved on to Hawaii, where I met my wife, then on to Vermont and then back to Arizona. to keep things fresh,” says Haywood. “The staff loves the challenge of creating a new menu.” For regular dining at Anacapa reservations are not required, but they are recommended, especially during peak season, as seating is on a first come first serve basis, suggests Haywood. For patrons with special dietary needs, Anacapa can accommodate guests who are on gluten-free diets, those with food allergies and vegetarians. “All of our meals are made in house from scratch so we control what goes into them,” says Haywood. In addition to great dining, Anacapa also has meeting rooms available. If you are interested in a fresh new venue for your next business seminar, company function, wedding or private party, look no further. From small groups of up to 10, to larger groups of between 150 and 175, the restaurant has meeting rooms available to fit every need. An updated audio/ visual system, projectors, wireless Internet access and large-screen televisions are available. Wonderful catering selections and a variety of dining options can be provided. Last year, Anacapa implemented a community volunteer marketing group to increase awareness across the West Valley. “Our mission statement defines what the Anacapa is all about,” says marketing manager Joel Piaskowski. “Our business model is to provide quality, upscale casual dining and banquet services to residents and the West Valley communities by incorporating gracious hospitality and impeccable service in a country club atmosphere.” For Advertising Information Call (623) 594-1630
Anacapa underwent a remodeling recently. After a thorough search for a design team, the restaurant was closed for several weeks while the remodel took place. “After about 10 years, Anacapa was ready for a new look to remain relevant to the community,” says Fred Hernandez, the restaurant’s food, beverage and catering manager. “Everything was changed — the paint, tile, carpeting, tables, chairs, walls and more. The end result is an exciting new look and ambiance that has pleased everyone.” Anacapa is open 11 a.m.
to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and closed on Mondays. A full service restaurant and bar, lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., while dinner is served from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Patrons can enjoy happy hour specials 2:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and the Sunday breakfast buffet runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In addition to the Sunday buffet, Anacapa offers buffets for special occasions such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and Mardi Gras. ERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson©
Clean and save takeout food containers rather than purchasing commercial plastic containers. They are all the same basically, and you will not be at a loss if you need to throw one away, leave it behind or send leftovers home with a guest. ••• To preserve your battery life on your smartphone, remember to close out applications that you’re not using. Shut down and restart your phone from time to time as well. ••• Keep musty smells out of your linen closet by stashing a box of baking soda on one of the shelves, just as you would in the kitchen. ••• Got too many coffee cups? Add potting soil and a small flower to give as gifts to brighten someone’s day. ••• Want to eat your nine servings of fruits and veggies a day? Keep fresh fruit out and in view to increase the amount you eat. Cut and otherwise prepare vegetables and store them front and center in your refrigerator. Plan your meals around the vegetables instead of the protein. ••• After you clip the coupons you want to keep from your Sunday paper inserts, pass them along to your neighbors. They may use different products and so may want your coupons. ••• Use baking soda to scrub away stuck-on food on your grill. Sprinkle it on the metal brush, and scrub away. If your grate is beyond the power of fire and baking soda, remove it and lay it on the ground on some newspaper. Spray with oven cleaner and let sit (keep pets and kids away from it). Rinse with a garden hose and replace on the grill.

of dietary fiber and is a mild diuretic, which helps to eliminate toxic materials in the gut. It’s also a great source of potassium and is low in sodium, which helps with blood pressure and heart rates. Cucumbers are high in vitamin K, which helps with bone strength. It also has established a role in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease by limiting neuronal damage in the brain. You can use cucumbers in a variety of ways. Fresh, cleaned cucumbers can be enjoyed as they are. You also can cut cucumbers into cubes with the skin and add them to vegetable or fruit salads. Finely chopped, fresh cucumber slices are delicious when mixed with yogurt, cumin, coriander, pepper and salt to make cucumber raita, the popular Indian condiment that adds a cooling effect to spicy dishes. Cucumbers also can be blended into a juice and combined with other vegetables and fruits, like my recipe for strawberry cucumber lime coolers. It’s the perfect way to cool off with cucumbers on a hot summer day.

When Joan Nick, an 87-yearold retiree, was diagnosed with the dry form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in her left eye, she was worried about going blind. Joan had already lost sight in her right eye in her 60s due to glaucoma, so the vision in her left eye was all she had — and she didn’t want to lose it. As there are no treatments for dry AMD other than supplements that slow progression in some patients, Joan’s AMD was monitored through regular eye exams to detect changes. Then, one day during an exam, Joan’s ophthalmologist asked her to read an eye chart; and to her surprise, she couldn’t read it at all. Her condition had progressed to the more severe, wet form of AMD. Joan is one of an estimated 11 million Americans who have some form of AMD, a disorder that erodes the central vision, making it difficult to read, drive or recognize faces. This vision loss can occur slowly, but in some cases it’s sudden. While AMD is the leading cause of legal blindness among seniors in the United States, recent advances in treatment hav made the disease more manageable than ever. Joan’s condition, wet AMD, is the form that reduces vision quickly and is responsible for 90 percent of all legal blindness related to AMD. Ten years

ago, wet AMD was considered largely untreatable and many patients experienced severe, irreversible vision loss. But with the introduction of new treatment options, such as antiVEGF (anti-vascular endothelial growth factor) drugs, which are injected into the eye, more patients with the condition are maintaining their eyesight and avoiding permanent vision loss. Joan is one of them. With regular treatment, she is now able to read and cook and do the things she enjoys. In its earliest stages, AMD may not have any symptoms. Eye exams are critical to diagnosing AMD in its early stages and monitoring its progression. Oral nutritional supplements may be advised for some people with the dry form of the disease. If it advances to wet AMD, eye exams enable patients to know when to start treatment before their vision permanently deteriorates. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that older Americans get an eye exam every one to two years.

Grand Season Business Profile
The Team at King Automotive Repair Work Together Like a Well-Oiled Machine By Pamela Holechek© A proposed bridge at Grand Avenue and the Loop 303 in Surprise wasn’t going to keep Dan Groman and Doug Campbell out of business. So they brought their more than 50 years of combined automotive expertise to a former Southwest Ambulance station in Sun City and opened King Automotive Repair in April 2014. “Our crew has worked together for 17 years and in that time, our operation has become a well-oiled machine,” says Groman, co-owner and manager of King Automotive Repair. Co-owner Campbell is the company’s lead mechanic. The team at King Automotive Repair services, repairs, and rebuilds or replaces engines and transmissions for most vehicles. “When you work with us, you’ll get the complete service of a team that understands your vehicle’s engine inside and out,” says Groman. “We can take care of your engine no matter what type of vehicle you have.” Other services performed by King Automotive Repair include air conditioning, brakes, steering and suspension, and routine maintenance. “Cars are
expensive, but you don’t have to purchase a new vehicle every few years when you work with us for complete routine maintenance,” says Groman. “We’ll make sure everything is working properly and help you avoid costly repairs or purchases in the future.” Groman says being an independent repair shop owner amid national competitors has not altered his day-to-day operation. “Back when I worked in the corporate world, I was told by a vice president, ‘Don’t be concerned about what the competition does. Be concerned about what you do,’” says Groman. “That has always stuck with me and that is exactly what we do.” Groman couples that sage advice with a King Automotive Repair focus that includes consistency of service, excellence in workmanship, fair pricing, free one-hour diagnostic testing, free shuttle service, a 12-month/12,000-mile warranty, and the honoring of most extended and nationwide warranties, as well as the policy to put customers’ needs first. “We’ve maintained a 98 percent repeat-customer base,” he says.
Customers can be confident that King Automotive Repair has the remedy for vehicle breakdowns, even the kind of automotive setbacks that evolve from a do-it-yourself repair that finishes with leftover parts and this question: “How could that possibly happen to my vehicle?” “Dave Coffman will have the answer,” says Groman, refer-
ring to one of King Automotive Repair’s veteran mechanics. “He’s been a mechanic for 25 years and has a photographic memory.” Another mechanic of note at King Automotive Repair is Tyler Campbell, who is Doug’s brother. Suppose that a driver reads this sentence found on the Arizona Department of

After the test, I will discuss the results with the customer and provide an estimate for repairs.” King Automotive Repair, located at 10002 W. Chris Pratt is poised for superstardom. He first gained notoriety in 2009 on “Parks and Recreation” as goofy Andy Dwyer. Unlike most series actors who are too busy to take on film work because of the demands of a weekly s h o w , P r a t t started doing one Chris Pratt film a year. He did “Moneyball” in 2011, “Zero Dark Thirty” in 2012 and “Her” in 2013. In 2014 he did double-duty: first, “The Lego Movie,” which cost $60 million and grossed $469 million, and the Lego Movie Video Game, followed by the blockbuster film “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which cost $196 million and took in $774 million.
By Tony Rizzo© As soon as he’d completed 117 episodes of “Parks and Recreation,” he jumped into the $180 million epic “Jurassic World,” which grossed $209 million during its opening weekend last month. But Pratt won’t stop to rest. He’ll soon jump right into the remake of “The Magnificent Seven,” with Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke, due out January 2017. Mark Wahlberg is currently shooting two movies, the comedy “Daddy’s Home” with Will Ferrell, and the disaster drama “Deep Water Horizon,” with Kurt Russell, John Malkovich and Kate Hudson, out September 2016. Scarlett Johansson has three major films being released in 2016. February will bring “Hail Caesar!” April will see the live-action Disney film “The Jungle Book.” And on May 6, “Captain America: Civil War” will be released.

15 Minutes of Daily Exercise is Good Enough the gold standard. It was shown to reduce the average risk of death by 30 percent. However, new research has shown that the recommended level of exercise didn’t consider the needs and health of seniors — more than 60 percent of whom weren’t up
By Matilda Charles© This is one piece of research a lot of seniors can really get behind: Exercising less than the recommended 30 minutes a day still has benefits. Until now, 30 minutes a day (or 150 minutes a week) of moderate exercise has been
to doing that much exercise (and were therefore likely to be discouraged from trying at all). A French study monitored the health and activity levels of seniors over the age of 65 for 13 years. The results were as follows: Those who did the 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise (for example, brisk walking) had a 57 percent lower risk of death. That’s significantly more than the 30 percent previously calculated for that level of exercise.
The big news, however, for those who aren’t fans of exercise, is that 15 minutes a day, five days a week, is a good target for seniors. That can include swimming, riding a bike, brisk walking, dancing, ping-pong, badminton — anything that gets you moving for 15 minutes. Granted, that 15 minutes a day (or 75 minutes per week) only gets you a 22 percent lower risk for mortality, but it’s a start.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

Tips on Increasing Mobility and Safety in the Home You’re getting older, and those day-to-day tasks that never took a second thought are becoming more difficult. Your kids are urging you to downsize and move to an apartment in a senior living community where everything would be on one level, but
that’s the last thing you want to do. After all, home is where your heart is, and it’s where you want to stay. Fortunately for today’s seniors, there are many devices that make aging easier and safer. These devices can also increase mobility in the home.
One device is a stairlift. Stairlifts can be designed for straight or curved staircases, even outdoor patios and front steps. If you’re unsteady on your feet and are at risk of falling, or if you suffer from painful osteoarthritis, here are some more ways to increase mobility while staying safe in your home. • Reduce clutter and move tripping hazards, like stacks of books, off the floor. • If you live with cats, put
collars with bells on them so you always know where they are. Pets, too, can be a tripping hazard. • Consider using a cane. Today’s canes come in pretty colors and patterns and will help you keep your balance as you’re walking around the house. • Invest in a grabber pole so you can reach cans and bags of food and other items stored on high shelves without using a stepladder.

Q: I have a Buddy Lee doll that I received in the late 1940s. It is still dressed in its original Lee overalls and cap. I rarely played with this doll, so although it is not mint, it is in excellent condition. I have been offered $150 for it, but thought I would check with you first. — Barbara, Sun City West, Ariz. A: Buddy Lee dolls have molded hair, painted eyes and are jointed at the shoulder, with stiff hips and legs. They are dressed in Lee clothes. Most of the Buddy Lee dolls I have seen do not have their original clothes, so this makes the one you have especially desirable. According to “Blue Book Dolls & Values” by Jan Foulke and published by Hobby House Press, your doll is valued in the $450 to $550 range, so my advice is explore more options before you accept

the offer you have. Q: I have about a dozen perfume bottles that originally belong to my grandmother. Most of the bottles seem to be from the 1930s and ’40s. How can I find out more about them? — Mike, Rye, N.Y. A: One of the better organizations for collectors is the International Perfume Bottle Association. Contact is www. perfumebottles.org, and 732492-2003. There are several excellent references. One of my favorites is “The Wonderful World of Collecting Perfume Bottles: Identification & Value Guide” by Jane Flanagan and published by Collector Books. Write Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send him an email to questionsforcox@aol.com. Crossword Solution
