OF BOOKS NOTE Reviewed By Larry Cox© Underwater Babies by Seth Casteel (Little, Brown & Company, $21)

Photographer Seth Casteel says his life changed forever when a little dog jumped into a swimming pool. Casteel was born in Decatur, Ill., and eventually developed skills to become a self-taught professional photographer. In 2007 he began taking pictures of rescue dogs in shelters to help in the adoptive process. His business as a photographer was only moderately successful until he made a major investment — purchasing a sophisticated camera that could capture images underwater. After photographing dogs swimming underwater, he posted several of his images on the Internet, and they immediately went viral. When his daily hits surpassed 100,000, he compiled his better pictures in a book, “Underwater Dogs.” It became a bestseller and triggered a second book, “Underwater Puppies.” In his third book, Casteel uses his camera to capture “Underwater Babies.” His new book is fascinating and filled with more than 60 images. The connection that dogs have with water and the incredible range of emotions they reveal during their adventures underwater are shared by their human counterparts. Casteel points out that the main mission of his latest project is to create a joyful, whimsical series of images of babies swimming to generate awareness about water safety for children. Each of his photos was shot during an actual swim lesson, with each baby learning water safety and survival skills. For Advertising Information Call (623) 594-1630

C OUCH THEATRE By Sam Struckhoff© PICKS OF THE MONTH These hits are now available on DVD and Blu-ray. “Tangerines” (R) — After the fall of the Soviet Union, a benevolent old farmer finds himself caught in a war between Georgia and Abkhazian separatists. When the conflict comes right to his front yard, Ivo (Lembit Ulfsak) buries a few soldiers, and finds that two of them are still alive — one man from each side. The adversaries agree not to shed blood under his roof, but it’s a cramped, fragile peace between sworn enemies. Before this film was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars last year, many in the West had never heard of Estonian actor Lembit Ulfsak. After watching this performance, it’s like finding out that there’s been another Ian Mckellen just hanging out, putting his awesome talent into stuff you’ve never seen. “3 Hearts” (PG-13) — This French triangular drama takes a pretty foreboding look at a story of star-crossed love. Marc and Sophie have an instant connection when they accidentally meet on the streets of a provincial town in France. They make a date to meet again, but circumstances intervene and they go their separate ways. Later, Marc marries a swell gal named Sylvie, and then learns that Sylvie is sister to Sophie, the one who got away. Harsh tones and meaningful glances ensue. HOROSCOPE

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Making things more complicated than they need to be can be a problem for the typically orderly Lamb. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Avoiding personal involvement in a troubling situation might be advisable at this time, especially since you probably don’t have all the facts. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A problem with a colleague you thought had been resolved could recur. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Giving your self-esteem a boost could be a good idea for the Moon Child, who might feel a bit daunted by the month’s occurrences. LEO (July 23 to August 22) New relationships move to new levels, while long-standing partnerships are strengthened. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A recent workplace problem will prove to be one of miscommunication. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) After dealing pretty much in the dark with a matter that seemed to be taking forever to resolve, you should soon be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A positive message should help lift that energy-draining sense of anxiety. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Try to control that heated Sagittarian temperament while dealing with what you believe to be an unfair matter. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Nursing hurt feelings could keep you from learning what went wrong. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Nature is dominant this month. Try to spend time outdoors with someone special. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An upcoming career decision could be based on how well you might be able to apply your artistic talents.

Celebrity cat owners such as Ellen Degeneres, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry have made cat ownership trendy, and research shows that cats do more for their owners than influence celebrity style. A recent study found that 95 percent of cat owners believe their feline friends lighten their mood, while 74 percent say they’d rather be at home with their cat than get a massage. In addition, 79 percent of cat owners say they treat their cat like people, or even their children. Given the importance of cats in owners’ lives, pampering them in return seems only fair. Here are three purr-fect ways to spoil your feline friends. • Give treats a homemade touch: Don’t just settle for store-bought cat treats. Create your own. Recipes that include cheese, chicken, biscuits and more can be found online. Each gives you the chance to provide your pet with a one-of-a-kind taste sensation and the relief that they’re enjoying wholesome ingredients. • A little massage: When spending time with your cat, show them affection with a relaxing massage. Start with long, gentle strokes, applying weight at about five grams per pound of your cat — this is a very light touch. Keep one hand on your cat constantly while the other massages the legs, tail and spine, going in the direction of the fur. • Offer real outside time: Allowing your cats to spend long periods of time outside is not advised and isn’t good for your cat’s health, but in the right moments, brief periods of outside time can be beneficial. If you have a well-closed-off area on your property, consider letting your cat out for a supervised visit. The new sensations will pique their curiosity.

When it comes to getting fit, many consider cardio exercise the best solution. But strength training is also an essential part of any comprehensive exercise routine. Strength training can boost cardio health, burn calories and fat and put you on the fasttrack for fitness success. It’s no surprise that strength training was listed as a top fitness trend for both men and women by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Here are some easy ways to add some strength training into your exercise routine: • Commit to a regular routine, and build from there. If you are new to strength training, consider lighter weights and fewer repetitions to get started. You can challenge yourself with larger increments and higher repetitions as you progress. • Use equipment, or keep it simple. Equipment such as kettle bells, dumbbells and medicine balls are all great options. If you don’t have easy access to weights, or want to start off simple, everyday objects, such as a frozen water bottle or cans of soup, can be used as substitutes. • Get back to the basics with functional fitness. Functional fitness focuses on strength and bodyweight training exercises to improve balance, develop muscle and condition our bodies. Basic exercises, such as squats or sit-ups, mimic movements used in daily life. Another option to keep your body tuned to daily activities is walking.

Economy On Track to Return to Solid Growth Recent economic indicators have signaled that the economy is improving, and many hoped June’s job growth would build on May’s strong gains. Instead, job growth was modest, continuing the trend over the past few years. The economy added 223,000 jobs, slightly less than the 230,000 expected, according to Bloomberg. The unemployment rate fell to 5.3 percent, as the labor force shrank. In addition, wages were unchanged from May, up just 2 percent over the past year, and in line with wage growth throughout the sixyear recovery. on track to return to solid growth in the second quarter and the rest of the year. • Consumer spending jumped 0.9 percent in May, and personal income rose 0.4 percent, reflecting the rebound from first-quarter weakness. • Manufacturing expanded in June at its fastest pace in five months, suggesting the drag from the strong

dollar may be lessening. • New and existing home sales strengthened in May, and housing prices were up 4.9 percent over the past year, continuing the positive trend in housing. • Consumer confidence rose more than expected in June. If the economy continues to improve, with modest job growth and inflation moving toward 2 percent, the Federal Reserve has indicated it plans to start to increase short-term interest rates later this year. In our view, that’s a positive sign. Make sure your portfolio is prepared with a variety of bonds with different maturities. Don’t Be Distracted Headlines from Greece and Puerto Rico have recently raised concerns and triggered market volatility. In both cases, overspending has left them without the money to pay their bills. Their troubles are distressing, but your focus should remain on making decisions based on your situation. Focus on Fundamentals Many different short-term distractions have triggered rising volatility in both stocks and bonds — and we think more are on the horizon. But stocks have tended to rise despite troublesome headlines. That’s because the fundamentals of improving economic growth and rising corporate earnings are positive signs, which we expect to continue. To help you ignore the distractions, make sure your portfolio has the right mix of stocks, bonds and international investments for your situation and comfort level with risk. That way, you’ll be able to stay invested and use any market pullbacks as opportunities to add quality investments. Provided by Lee Bradley, Investment Representative, Edward Jones, Surprise, AZ. Living a greener lifestyle isn’t just about conserving natural resources, it’s also about saving money. Whether you’re renovating your existing home, or building from the ground up, you can create a home that’s more efficient, cost effective and “green.” Here are a few tips: • Insulate against air: In terms of heating and cooling, a well insulated home conserves the most energy by creating an airtight seal, locking out any potential hot or cold air drafts. To properly insulate, replace old windows and doors with more energyefficient options. • Make energy-efficient choices: Inefficient appliances can cause a spike in your gas, water and electric usage. For a simple change, choose LED bulbs for all your light fixtures. To conserve even more energy, opt-in for highefficiency upgrades for your

larger appliances, like refrigerators, dishwashers and clothes dryers, and install water conserving bathroom fixtures to help cut down your home’s overall water usage. • Maximize natural light: When you’re able to rely on natural light for most of the day, the cost of your electric bill decreases. If you’re renovating, think about ways you can incorporate new window openings to increase the amount of natural light your home is currently receiving.

High-efficiency appliances can help reduce energy consumption.

K ITCHEN DIVA Of all the berries of summer, blackberries are the ones that arrive early and stay late into the season. In warm climates, this strikingly beautiful fruit begins producing in late spring, and if the weather is not too hot, will continue throughout the summer. If you’ve grown tired of strawberries and can’t find fresh raspberries or blueberries at the market, there most likely will still be baskets of blackberries. Blackberries, like blueberries and raspberries, are a super food. They are rich in vitamin C and fiber, but their most desirable healthy trait comes from their darkblue color, which is linked to high antioxidant levels. Antioxidants are considered a natural deterrent to many cancers and other diseases, and there is a long list

By Angela Shelf Medearis© of wonderful heath effects associated with eating fresh blackberries regularly. You can use blackberries in both sweet and savory dishes. My recipe for Grilled Cheese Sandwiches with blackberry-basil spread is a great way to showcase the sweet perfection of blackberries. Grilled Cheese Sandwiches with Blackberry-Basil Spread 12 ounces fresh blackberries 12-15 fresh basil leaves, chopped 1 loaf multigrain bread, Italian ciabatta, sourdough or a French boule, cut into 8 thick slices 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons butter or mayonnaise 3-4 ounces of American cheese, sliced 3-4 ounces of fontina cheese, sliced

Step 1. In a large, deep bowl, gently mash the blackberries with a potato masher or a fork, and stir in the chopped basil. Heat an electric griddle or large, heavy non-stick or castiron skillet over medium-low heat for at least 5 minutes. Step 2. Brush 4 slices of the bread with half of the olive oil and the butter or mayonnaise. On the remaining 4 slices of bread, place a single slice each of the American and the fontina cheese. Top with a few spoonfuls of smashed blackberries. Place the oiled and buttered

slices of the bread on top of the blackberries and press the slices together gently. Step 3. Carefully turn the sandwiches over so that the oiled and buttered side is in contact with the bottom of the griddle or skillet. Carefully brush the top of sandwiches with the remaining oil and butter. Turn heat down to medium low, and let each side cook for about 4-5 minutes to let the cheeses melt and the bread toast. Remove from the heat and serve immediately. Makes 4 sandwiches.

877-322-8228. Hint: Order one every quarter from a different credit bureau. • One of the biggest changes involves medical bills. Far too many consumers with perfect credit have seen their credit scores plunge when they’ve been hit with medical bills. From delays in insurance company payments to medical providers, to needing payment plans to cover large expenses, it’s been too easy for credit scores to take a hit — when the only thing that ever went wrong was that someone got sick. Now the credit bureaus won’t put any medical debt on a credit report for 180 days. And here’s a bonus: If a delinquency has been reported from medical debt, once that debt is paid, it will disappear from the credit report and not linger for long periods as happens with other types of debt.

If you’ve ever struggled to have incorrect credit information fixed at one of the big three credit bureaus, or if you’ve been turned down for credit or housing due to that bad information, you’ll appreciate the changes that will go into effect later this year. The attorney general for the state of New York has negotiated consumer protections with the big three credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Those changes eventually will apply in the other states. Here are some highlights of the changes that are coming: • You’ll have a say: In the past, credit bureaus have simply taken the word of banks, lenders and creditors that you owed a certain amount of money — even if you didn’t. Consumers were left to work through the automated maze to try to get corrections made. Now, if you dispute something on your credit report, the bureaus will be required to use specially trained employees to check the information. • You can get an extra free updated report if changes have been made after dispute resolution. NTIQUE ANSWERS

Q: My dad was a soldier during World War II, and I have inherited his Longines wristwatch. It is the Model 13 ZN stainless-steel chronograph, with silver dial and original strap. Should I have it appraised? — Carl, Sun City, Ariz. A: This exact model of Longines watch was sold by an auction house in New York earlier this year for $50,600, so my answer is yes, do have your watch appraised. In recent years, vintage and collectible timepieces have soared in value. You might want to contact the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, which has more than 15,000 members in 50 countries. Contact is www.nawcc.org, and 877-255-1849. Q: I have a number of older books, and I would like to find out current values. Do

you have any suggestions? — Mona, Surprise, Ariz. A: One of the better sites is www.abe.com. Go to the site, type in the title and author, and you will quickly discover where that particular book is being offered for sale and for how much. Be aware that condition and edition are two very important factors when determining the value of a book. Q: My dad was quite a

fisherman. In fact, most of our family vacations centered around fishing sites and campgrounds. I have several tackle boxes full of lures, and I understand they have value. How can I find out if any that I have are worth keeping? — Bill, Lafayette, Colo. A: There are several excellent references that should be helpful. A personal favorite is “Classic Fishing Lures: Identification & Price Guide,” by Russell E. Lewis and published by Krause Books. This comprehensive guide features lures by such companies as Heddon, Paw Paw, Creek Chub, Pflueger, Shakespeare and South Bend. It features more than 1,500 photos in full color, current pricing, history and facts about lure makers, and even tips on collecting and dating lures. Q: I spend my summers in Texas, where I have been finding incredible arrowheads. Is there a guide or reference

book for this field of collecting? — Steve, Elizabeth, N.J. A: The ultimate guide to United States point types is “Overstreet Indian Arrowheads: Identification & Price Guide,” by Robert M. Overstreet and published by House of Collectibles books. It features more than 8,000 illustrations, up-to-date regional market reports and tips on grading. Although there are other guides, this one — in my opinion — is the best. Q: I have a doll made by Mattel and called “Shopping Sheryl.” I think I got it for my birthday in about 1970. — Beth, Naperville, Ill. A: Your doll was, indeed, manufactured in 1970 and is valued at $65. I found it in “200 Years of Dolls” by Dawn Herlocher and published by Krause Books. Putting together a puzzle can be a great exercise for your brain.

bad habits can trigger changes in your brain and contribute to the decline of your brain health. Stay sharp as you age with these simple ways to boost your brain power: • Eat brain food: While a good diet can improve your all-around health, certain foods keep your brain functioning optimally, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Some of these top “brain foods” include wild salmon, nuts and seeds, avocados, blueberries, and whole grains. • Exercise your brain: Your body isn’t the only thing that needs exercise. Puzzles, brain teasers and games help create new associations within your brain to keep it fresh. As an added exercise, try completing everyday activities with your non-dominant hand, such as combing your hair and brushing your teeth. • Continue to learn: The learning shouldn’t stop once you leave school. Continue to try new activities and test your brain by reading, taking classes or learning a new language. • Keep a sleep schedule: Not only is sleep fundamental for regenerating your physical body, but it has restorative properties for your brain as well. A good night’s sleep helps you to look at problems in a new light and improves your ability to think creatively. If you’re having trouble getting at least six hours of sleep per night, try ditching the technology before bed. Too much screen time before you rest your eyes reduces the quality of your sleep.

Grand Season Business Profile

¡Caramba! Fresh Mexican Food Prepares Meals That Will Make You Say ‘Wow’ By Pamela Holechek© Coming up with a unique business name can be quite a task. Just ask Paul and John Klokinis. The two brothers, who have spent the past 33 years as business partners, opened a Mexican restaurant in 1992. While conducting research for the business, they compiled a list of nearly 100 possible names for the restaurant. And then, inspiration suddenly came to them. Paul recalls how that “aha” moment happened: “John’s daughter Christina was playing in the finals of a tennis match. When she won the final point, her mom stood up and yelled ‘¡Caramba!,’ which means ‘wow’ in Spanish. Right then, we knew that was going to be the name of our restaurant.” ¡Caramba! Fresh Mexican Food, assuredly, is astonishing in numerous ways. Altogether, Paul and John have opened five locations across the West Valley. A tantalizing aroma wafts outside the ¡Caramba! Fresh Mexican Food location in Surprise, a mouth-watering greeting for those entering the restaurant. Opened in 2006, this fourth ¡Caramba! site is located in the Surprise Village center at 17239 N. Litchfield Road, just northeast of Litchfield and Bell roads. Each of the five ¡Caramba! Fresh Mexican Food locations features a full menu with more than 80 entrees and four tempting desserts, an inviting red/white/green dining room, upbeat Spanish-language music, and libations dispensed from a palmhut-style bar. “We make everything fresh throughout the day, right on the spot,” says Paul. “We make

We even grind our own spices for our special flavoring techniques. We don’t use lard or MSG, just canola oil that is cholesterol-free with no trans fats.” When a craving for healthy and delicious south-of-theborder cuisine beckons, ¡Caramba! Fresh Mexican Food can help satisfy every appetite — for adults and children. You can even start your day at ¡Caramba! Fresh Mexican Food. The restaurant offers more than a dozen breakfast choices, including a Mexican breakfast pizza for $8.25. Breakfast is served all day, seven days a week, starting at 10 a.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. on weekends. For lunch and dinner, one of the more popular items at ¡Caramba! Fresh Mexican Food is the Giant Caramba Burrito, which weighs about two and a half pounds and sells for $6.50. It consists of two tortillas filled with red and

green chile, beef or chicken, lettuce and tomatoes, smothered in two blends of cheese. ¡Caramba! Fresh Mexican Food’s award-winning “Best of Phoenix” margaritas cost $4.25 and are simply amazing, as are the secret-recipe sangrias, claims Paul. “Our margaritas are one of our biggest hits,” he says. “We also carry a large selection of Mexican and domestic beers, as well as wine.” Paul and John, to further please customers, coined and adhere to the slogan “Where You Don’t Peso Much.” ¡Caramba! Fresh Mexican Food is mindful to tailor and serve dishes fit for any patron. There’s even a menu board that suggests how entrees can be made low-fat, low-carbohydrate, gluten-free or entirely vegetarian. They also serve salads and award-winning Mexican sandwiches. Additionally, ¡Caramba! Fresh Mexican Food offers catering for every function,

notes Paul, from a lunch basket to a banquet. “For more than 20 years, we have customized our menu to suit every need and budget,” he says. Paul says that many of ¡Caramba! Fresh Mexican Food’s staff boast more than 20 years of employment with the company. And among the staff’s favorite customers, the list includes former Gov. Jan Brewer, police officers, firefighters and the members of the military. Both Paul and John say they are blessed. “To be here in the United States and be successful and help the community, it makes you feel good,” says John. For a city with the motto “West’s Most Western Town,” Scottsdale has become even more western with the addition of Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West, where visitors can experience the Old West through art, artifacts and depictions of cowboys. An easy stroll from Main Street, home to many galleries, bistros and souvenir shops, the museum is a welcome extension to an already thriving arts and cultural district in Old Town Scottsdale. Not only will visitors enjoy Wild West memorabilia filed with saddles, fine artwork and bronze sculptures, they will also learn about historical figures like Geronimo and the explorers Lewis and Clark. A multitude of interactive exhibits, multimedia productions and ongoing educational events attract all ages. Open since January 2015, this 43,000-squarefoot, two-story building is an architectural marvel in itself. Located on the site of the old Loloma Transit Station, the building combines a sleek modern design with Old West charm. Flanked by rows and rows of succulents and saguaros, the pathway leading to the entrance is stamped with tooled leather designs. The exterior of the building consists of concrete walls with textured ribs reminiscent of the towering saguaros of the Sonoran desert. The museum’s interior, with it’s pairing of natural and man-made materials, combines cedar millwork with brush steel accents that allow the colorful artwork and exhibits to shine. Wagon wheels suspended from the ceiling, exposed pipes, and light shows projecting tumbleweed and cowboys set the scene, and the floor-toceiling windows nicely frame the exterior desert landscape. Ongoing exhibitions of more than 80 paintings walk visitors through America’s West in the 19th and 20th centuries. Heritage Hall depicts photographs of the many individuals who made significant contributions to the West, including Annie Oakley, Wyatt Earp, John Muir, Red Cloud and Frank Lloyd Wright. To further transport you back in time, digital kiosks display videos of cowboy lore and visitors can take snapshots against a

backdrop of a campfire and covered wagon. Mosey on through the outdoor sculpture courtyard with an ever-changing array of art exhibits or attend a special event in the 135-seat theater, where performances, special programs and an ongoing film production highlights the story of the West. At every turn, visitors can be entrenched in the Old West and gain a better understanding of how history has shaped the area. The Western Spirit: Scottsdale Museum of the West is located at 3830 N. Marshall Way in Scottsdale. The museum is open 9:30 a.m.

Use a carabiner clip to hold the handles of grocery bags together. They will roll about less in the trunk and are easier to carry into the house when you get home. ••• Many people keep some pet food outdoors. If you have problems with ants in your pet’s food if feeding outside, you will like this trick: Place the bowl of food into a larger pan filled with water. The ants can’t cross it, and it has the added bonus of being another source of water for the animals. Be sure to change it frequently. ••• Witch hazel is an old remedy for bruises and bumps. You can find it in the firstaid aisle by the peroxide and rubbing alcohol. Simply moisten a folded paper towel, and park it right on the bump (never near the eyes or mouth). It prevents bruising and can lessen swelling in some cases. ••• Need to cross out a note so nobody can read it? Take this tip to the scratch pad: Instead of scribbling over something to be crossed out, write random letters over your words until the whole thing is illegible. ••• If you drop an egg, sprinkle with salt before you attempt to clean it up. The salt binds the whites, which will not spread, making pickup easier. ••• Save the peels from your oranges, and dry them at a low temperature in the oven. You can add them to a pot of coffee or tea for a flavor boost that is refreshing and delicious. ••• Baking soda can be used as a tooth scrub. It’s particularly effective against stains, as it is a mild abrasive.

Cardiovascular disease — damage to the heart and blood vessels — claims more American lives each year than all forms of cancer combined, according to the American Heart Association. Yet simple preventive steps, such as getting a cardiovascular screening, can help you make strides toward keeping your heart and blood vessels healthy. Plaque buildup in the arteries — known as atherosclerosis — is the main cause of cardiovascular disease. When the blood vessels that deliver blood to and from the heart become blocked or damaged, it can affect the heart itself, causing heart disease or leading to stroke. Heart disease is the most severe form of cardiovascular disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Recognize and Reduce Risks High LDL (bad) cholesterol and low HDL (good) cholesterol are among the most well-known risk factors that can lead to cardiovascular disease, but they’re not the only ones to be aware of. If you have untreated high blood pressure, a family history of cardiovascular disease, or diabetes, your risk of developing cardiovascular disease may be elevated, the Heart Association says. Smoking and a sedentary lifestyle may

also contribute to cardiovascular risks. Cardiovascular Screening Early detection is vital to effectively treating cardiovascular disease; you’ll have a better chance to stay healthy if you catch the disease before you begin to experience symptoms. Cardiovascular screenings detect possible problems in a patient’s blood vessels before they become more serious. The ultrasound testing looks inside a person’s arteries for signs of blockage, which can help detect cardiovascular disease early. Learn and Communicate While caring for your cardiovascular health is important at any age, risks rise with age. As you grow older, be aware of the signs of stroke and heart attack. Talk to your doctor about your risks for cardiovascular and heart disease, preventive measures, and how to best detect and treat problems early.

Early detection is vital to effectively treating cardiovascular disease.

Grand Season Business Profile

Neil’s Garage Cabinets is the Solution For All Your Storage Cabinetry Needs By Roberta Meehan© Have you reached the point where you can no longer comfortably park your car into the garage? Do you have a garage closet that’s too small to store your golf clubs, bag of stray bolts and assortment of tools? Is your laundry room overflowing with accessories, additives and items you just don’t want in the main part of your home? If so, it sounds like it’s time for you to contact Neil’s Garage Cabinets — a Surprise business that can work with you to solve your storage and organizational problems. Family-owned and operated Neil’s Garage Cabinets was started in 1971 by Neil Hague to serve the local — primarily retirement — community. Nineteen years later, Neil became partners with his son Van Gallegly, an ASU graduate. Neil retired in 1996 and passed on in 2012. The business partners today are Van and his wife, Suzette. Other family members are also employed by Neil’s Garage Cabinets. Overall, the company has about 25 full

have identical storage needs and so we go out and customize a plan that will meet the individual customer’s concerns, needs and ideas. “We have different specials with different packages,” he continues. “Each is priced according to the requirements of

the package and the needs of the customer.” Neil’s Garage Cabinets offers five wood grain colors from which to choose and all can be viewed on the company’s website at www.neilsgaragecabinets.com. If you contact Neil’s Garage Cabinets for help with your storage problems, a member of the staff will come out and give you a free estimate based on expectations as well as on the work involved, says Van. All work is licensed, bonded, and insured, and all installations come with a warranty, he adds. Cabinets from Neil’s Garage Cabinets — whether in the garage or in the laundry room — are built-in and are not free-standing. Van says this first involves establishing a level floor area. “Floors are not normally level,” he explains. “Logically, a slight slant makes sense for a garage floor but not for a garage cabinet. So, the bottom is first leveled and then the cabinet is constructed

upwards. Cabinets can have either permanent or adjustable shelves. Again, cabinets can be built to the customer’s specifications.” Indeed, whether you want a cabinet for your golf clubs, vacuum cleaner, tools or all of the above, Neil’s Garage Cabinets can make it happen. Van says the company has installed more than 100,000 cabinets. Neil’s Garage Cabinets also constructs solidly built workbenches. These workbenches can be assembled for any type of workbench project, notes Suzette. Do you need a bench for a variety of everyday needs? A bench for delicate workmanship? A bench for fine craftsmanship? Maybe you need a place for a knitting machine or even an awl and a jigsaw. “Whatever the need, Neil’s Garage Cabinets can help you get the workbench you desire,” she says. Neil’s Garage Cabinets does not do much overt advertising, as most customers

hear about the company by word of mouth, says Van. “Quality workmanship is a great referral,” he adds. Quality workmanship accompanied by a solid work ethic and a commitment to customer service has defined Neil’s Garage Cabinets, says Van. The company has maintained an A-plus rating with the Better Business Bureau since 1982. Van sums up Neil’s Garage Cabinets’ approach to business by saying, “Leave the guesswork out of your project. We will come in and measure, design, and work with you so that your cabinets or your new workbench will meet your specific needs.” Neil’s Garage Cabinets services the West Valley and Scottsdale. The company’s showroom is located at 11902 W. Thunderbird in El Mirage and is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call 623583-1044.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

Take Your First Steps to Becoming Healthier It’s never too early or too late to be healthy, but not everyone knows where to start. A combination of diet, exercise and healthy supplements can go a long way toward improving the quality of your life. And the prevalence of social media means that you’re never alone

in your efforts. Follow these steps to help get you started on a road to better health: • Eat wisely and well: A healthy diet is the foundation of a healthy lifestyle. In particular, starting the day with a healthy breakfast has many

benefits. Data from multiple studies have shown that people who eat breakfast are less likely to overeat and snack later in the day. • Build your support system: Improving your health can be a struggle, and a little encouragement goes a long way. Today’s social media outlets provide multiple options for seeking advice, as well as sharing health tips and information. • Get moving: Moderate

exercise can yield a multitude of health benefits, from improving mood, to lowering cholesterol, to building bone density. Other benefits of exercise include maintaining a healthy weight and boosting your energy (because your heart and lungs are working more efficiently). In addition, exercise can enhance your sex life by improving your energy and appearance, which will also boost your self-confidence. Have trouble sleeping? Exercise may be the cure.

Tips for Having a Clean and Eco-Friendly Home You faithfully separate your paper and plastic recyclables and purchase phosphate-free laundry detergent, but a look at your cleaning cabinet reveals bottles displaying skulls and crossbones. Sure, you know that harsh chemical cleaners aren’t the

best for the environment, but how else are you expected to clean your home? Luckily, it’s possible to make your home spotless without using toxic cleaners. Here are some tips on how to do that: • Purchase environmental-

ly friendly cleaning products: Put away the bleach and look for greener products. • Stop using paper towels: For windows, try using a soft cloth, like an old T-shirt. If you must use paper towels, look for brands that contain 100 percent recycled materials. • Use baking soda instead of fragrance sprays: Freshsmelling air doesn’t come from an aerosol can. If you want to banish funky odors, try sprinkling a scant amount

of baking soda into your carpet. The baking soda will absorb odors. A little vacuuming, and you’ll find yourself with an odor-free carpet. House plants, too, can help freshen the air. Chrysanthemums, English ivy, spider plants and Boston ferns can all improve indoor air quality, though you shouldn’t buy a plant without first checking to make sure that it will be safe around your pets.
