EDITOR
NOTE
FROM THE EDITOR 2017: A Fresh Perspective It’s hard to believe another year has passed and we’ve entered a new year with so many possibilities. I don’t know about you but I’m done with New Year’s resolutions. I’m honestly tired of the pressure of how I’m going to fix all of my personal, professional and parenting flaws in 2017. I’ve decided rather than setting shortterm goals I know I honestly won’t accomplish, I’m going to approach 2017 with a FRESH perspective. Rather than focusing on my failures (or others), my desire is to operate this year focused on approaching life with a FRESH outlook, and try to extend more grace and encouragement to those I encounter.
My hope for you and yours is that 2017 will be full of opportunities, experiences and unexpected blessings. When you encounter those unexpected obstacles, I hope you can take a deep breath and consider the challenge as an opportunity. Thank you for your continued support of The Grand Seasons Family, and for those local businesses who allow us to do what we love: connect, communicate and create opportunities to engage with the incredible people who live in our community. Here’s to a fresh 2017! Melissa Cox Melissa@thegrandseason.com Editorial Director

FRESH New Year’s Day. A fresh start. A new chapter in life waiting to be written. New questions to be asked, embraced, and loved. Answers to be discovered and then lived in this transformative year of delight and self-discovery. Today carve out a quiet interlude for yourself in which to dream, pen in hand. Only dreams give birth to change. — Sarah Ban Breathnach You can’t change who you are, but you can change what you have in your head, you can refresh what you’re thinking about, you can put some fresh air in your brain. — Ernesto Bertarelli 6

2017: A FRESH START How are your resolutions going so far? by Melissa Cox Each year my Type A personality gets geared up immediately after December 25 to concentrate on how I’m going to achieve my personal, professional and parenting goals in the New Year. The perfectionist in me is always so happy with my fresh thoughts being penned into a new, clean journal—but to tell you the truth I’ve been thinking a lot about my pretty notebook. While I believe my intentions are pure, I’m realizing that my goals are not materializing in the ways I
anticipated—thus allowing my subconscious self to convince me I’m a failure. So I’m taking a fresh approach to 2017. My goal is to spend time on things that ignite my passions, rather than being frustrated with the issues that fuel the fire of my fears. So this year, I’m challenging myself (and you—if you’re up for it) to approach each day with a FRESH perspective, and to live with a heart and mind open to FRESH opportunities. My hope is that I can let go of my failures, and focus on the things I get right, and learn to be brave enough to apologize when I disappoint and perhaps fail those who count on me to be their companion through this amazing journey called life.

YOU
WHO ARE YOU? Improve your most important relationship
A hollow relationship with yourself reflects in the relationships you form with others. Without a grounding belief in your own worth, you become dependent on approval and acceptance to prove your worth. Even narcissistic behaviors are often a kind of self-defense that masks a fragile sense of self-worth.
Since healthy relationships are the marker of countless benefits—from physical health to finding meaning in life—you need to get back in touch with yourself. Here are three important ways to do so: 1. Listen to your body You are hardwired to avoid painful and uncomfortable feelings and

emotions. But in doing so, you can become victim to those same emotions and impulses. The ability to face your fears and then rise above them comes not only from cognitive processes but also from deep within your body. To have an alternate route in place, spend some time reflecting on how you want to show up in the world in line with your values and aspirations.
Your relationship with yourself is undoubtedly the most important relationship in your life. To show up fully, and shine your brightness in this world, disconnect from the constraints of approval of others and reconnect to the gifts of your inner core. For an authentic life is far above and beyond the limited life of a threatened ego.
N
3. Find your North Star Your behaviors are the result of your thoughts, beliefs and emotions. When you do not step back to objectively listen to your internal chatter, you can allow it to run your life.
Application: • Write down your most deeply held values and ask yourself if you are living according to them. • If not, what can you change in your life? • How might you do things differently? • How can you live your life in accordance with your authentic self? • What voices do you need to stop listening to? • What relationships in your life help bring out the best in you?
N
uncertainty of life. And here’s the strange part— the brain doesn’t really care if the story it crafts is painful or incorrect. All it looks for is a pattern, even if this pattern is the result of biased observations and interpretations. Which is why you need to listen to its story with non-judgment, and stay aware of where your mind may be fooling you. This way, you can listen to the negative chatter in your mind and choose to dismiss it. You can watch your brain seek to connect dots and be aware of what it is doing but not become trapped in its game.

HALF WAY THERE! Tools for mid-year motivation
It’s time to delve back into school and push towards the finish line with great grades and dynamic projects. Now that you’re back in the groove, a mid-year infusion of new technology and tools can provide the motivation needed to ace the rest of the year. Here are several tools and technologies that can pave the way to better, more enthusiastic learning at home and in the classroom:
Social media
Teachers are increasingly communicating with students and parents over social media, whether it is tweeting updates about today’s lesson or field trip or using Pinterest to share ideas and student work. Seventy-one percent of teens use more than one social media site already, according to recent Pew research. Getting comfortable
using these tools in a more formal capacity, however, can have real world implications for students, as more industries and professions require social media proficiency.
Making music
Students and teachers of music know the varied benefits of a high-quality arts education. Learning music can help develop math and pattern recognition skills, increase coordination and foster left brain development, according to the National Association for Music Education. Be sure your tools of the trade are up to the task. For students learning to play a keyboard, look for an instrument that features the same sound quality as a traditional piano, but also contains additional high-tech options and benefits.
Noise canceling headphones
Peace and quiet are not always available during crunch time, particularly for students with many siblings, or college students living in a dorm room. Help scholars achieve greater serenity with a good set of noise canceling headphones that don’t compromise audio quality. You can help make the school year feel new again with these simple tools to help students focus on learning, rather than being distracted by busy work.

HEALTH
FAMILY FITNESS 7 ways to have fun
Healthy eating habits and gym routines can be hard to keep up after the excitement of the holidays fizzle. For parents who juggle busy schedules, it can be particularly challenging to squeeze in the recommended amount of physical activity each day. However, with a little motivation and a dose of creativity, families can resolve to stay active and get fit together without stepping foot into the gym. Here are seven ideas to consider: 1. Explore the neighborhood Take the family on regular strolls around the block. Create your own nature walks by identifying different insects, leaves and animals along the way. 2. Take advantage of local parks Visit a local park to discover different walking paths or bike trails. Spend some time on the playground while you’re at it! Equipment, such as monkey bars, climbing walls and balance beams are all fun ways to keep moving.

3. Invest in athletic gear Athletic clothes and accessories with the latest performance fabrics enhance comfort and safety while working out. What’s more, new gear can be a great way for each family member to show his or her sense of style, which can be just the motivation needed to get moving. 4. Schedule dance parties Enjoy music and shake off some stress by scheduling regular dance parties after school, during commercial breaks or before bedtime. 5. Make a game out of chores Make the most of family chores. Raking leaves, picking weeds, cleaning up animal waste and mowing the grass don’t just enhance your home’s curb appeal; they’re great forms of exercise, too! www.grandseasonfamily.com

• Valley wide for 25 years 6. Get in a routine A routine ensures consistency. Set aside time each week for bike rides, tag football and soccer games, all of which can all be done in the neighborhood, backyard or at a favorite park. When it’s too dark or cold, head to a local trampoline park, climbing gym or recreation center. 7. Make a matrix Planning fun activities increases the chance you will keep up the good work. For those who love to check items off a list, a color-coded spreadsheet can be a fun visual reminder to test out new activities. Hang this in a common area (such as the kitchen) to keep track. Once you’ve got the plan in place, get into a fitness routine that works for your family and stick with it! For Advertising Information Call (623) 594-1630

HEALTH
A COLD OR FLU? Your guide to quick relief
Every year in the U.S., there are more colds than people. Annually, nearly 320 million Americans catch 1 billion colds, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Seven in 10 people will turn to over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to help them feel better—and many of these medicines may contain acetaminophen. As a matter of fact, acetaminophen is one of the most commonly used drug ingredients to reduce pain and fever, found in more than 600 OTC and prescription (Rx) medicines. When used as directed, it is safe and effective. Taking more than the maximum daily dose (4,000 milligrams), however, is an overdose and can lead to liver damage. You can do a lot to protect yourself and your family from getting sick this season, including:
Get vaccinated
It’s the best way to minimize the chance you’ll get the flu and spread it to others. Each year’s shot is different, specifically designed to prevent the strain of flu expected to be most prevalent that year. If you have concerns, talk to your physician.

Wash your hands
Be diligent about washing your hands. Each time you wash, scrub for at least 20 seconds, which is about the length of singing to yourself two renditions of “Happy Birthday.”
Avoid germs
Try not to perform actions that spread germs, like touching your face, especially your eyes, nose and mouth. If you do get sick, stay home from school or work to avoid spreading germs to others.
Practice healthy habits
Get plenty of sleep, exercise regularly, stay hydrated and eat nutritious food. Each of these actions help build your immune system.
www.grandseasonfamily.com
Know Your Dose
If you or a family member does fall ill, you may decide to treat symptoms with medicine, which might contain acetaminophen. To ensure you’re using acetaminophen safely, follow these steps: • Always read the label on any medication you take. Be sure you understand and follow the dosing instructions. • Take only one medicine that contains acetaminophen at a time. Taking multiple medications with acetaminophen could put you at risk for exceeding the maximum daily dose. If you have questions about an OTC or prescription medication that you’re taking, talk to a healthcare provider. To learn more, visit KnowYourDose.org.

LIFESTYLE
COLOR YOUR WORLD Insights on how color impacts emotions
In different cultures, ideas vary on what colors mean. Much of the science has not yet been conclusive, and a lot of information about color and mood is subjective and intuitive. In the West, orange is believed to make you happy, while red increases your appetite. Warm colors can make you feel, well, warm and cozy, while cool colors such as blue and lavender seem to have a calming affect. “It’s a burgeoning field of research,” says Arielle Eckstut, co-author of The Secret Language of Color. “In 10 years it’s likely we’ll have more information about how color affects us biologically.” Meanwhile, here are a few things we do know about how color can affect wellbeing:
GREEN: Stress Release Spending time outside, in nature, has been found to be an effective way to relieve stress. A recent study suggests that looking at the color green may have something to do with reducing stress.
RED: Attraction or Jealousy?
BLUE: Soothing Considering that blue is one of the first colors humans needed to be comfortable with, it’s surprising that we use the word “blue” to describe feeling sad or depressed. It’s even more ironic given that, according to studies, when photoreceptors in the eye detect blue light, they send messages to parts of the brain that control alertness, hormones, sleep and other functions.

Research shows that men tend to find a woman wearing red to be more sexually desirable than a woman wearing another color. While a man may find a woman in red sexy, another woman is likely to perceive her as a threat. A recent study found that women perceive other women as both sexually receptive and more likely to cheat if they’re wearing red. The same study found that women were more likely to keep a closer eye on their romantic partners while around a woman wearing red rather than green.

Everyone can tell you what their favorite color is, or that they love so many colors it’s hard for them to choose—or that they really can’t stand a certain hue.” Color preferences arise from a number of sources, starting with cultural influences. For instance, yellow is one of the least popular colors in the Western world, while in China it’s profoundly meaningful.

GROWTH
SELF-TALK 8 steps to creating confidence
Virtually everyone struggles with a lack of self-confidence at some point in their lives and it’s perfectly normal to feel unsure of yourself in certain situations. If, however, you find a lack of confidence holding you back from fully enjoying your personal life or achieving your professional goals, it may be time to take action. “There are actually steps you can take to rebuild your confidence, even when you’re struggling to feel selfassured,” says Life Coach Susie Moore. “Confidence is a real-life super power that affects every aspect of your life, from your relationships to your career and social life, but it’s also more attainable than you think.” Moore shares the following tips on how you can be your most confident self and live a fulfilled, unconditional life: Tap the power of words and positive thinking by starting every day with an uplifting mantra. Positive self-talk such as “I am loveable. I am worthy. I am enough” can help boost confidence levels. Make a conscious decision to be more kind and gentle with yourself every day. Practice a strong pose and smile to help enhance your sense of confidence. Confidence is all about attitude. Making these small physical changes can immediately impact how self-assured you feel in any situation.

Make self-care non-negotiable. Take time to listen to your body and give it what it needs to help you feel confident. Keep your mind and body active. Being busy leaves you little time to overthink, so fill your life with activities you enjoy. Yoga, visiting friends, reading, cooking, going for walks or even organizing your closet all count! www.grandseasonfamily.com
Listen to, but don’t heed negative opinions of others. Your positive attitude and vision are more important than anyone else’s negative thoughts. Be sure to reserve time and energy for your own priorities. Busy lives mean we can get bogged down with commitments to others, and while those things are important, it’s vital to take care of yourself and your own priorities first. Build your schedule around the time you need for your own goals and let everything else fit in around that. According to Moore, “Confidence is an almost-magical quality that can help you lead your best, most fulfilled life and—more importantly—it’s in your grasp!

Speak with intention. The way you talk impacts your mood, your confidence and how other people perceive you. When you use verbiage like “I’ll try” or “I don’t think I can,” you’re really allowing yourself permission to feel unconfident. Instead, build confidence and commitment with statements like “I will” and “I know I can.” Don’t overcomplicate things or allow yourself to be distracted by unimportant things. HOME
FOR SALE
Increase your home’s resale value Whatever you’re passionate about, you know hobbies cost money. Fortunately, for anyone who likes to roll up their sleeves and isn’t afraid of taking on a new house project, their hobby can actually save them money. In particular, homeowners who are getting ready to make a move and want to get top dollar for their property can take on a number of home renovation projects that will increase the value of their home.
Light fixtures Lighting has a tremendous effect on how potential buyers perceive your house. While it’s important to keep the rooms and hallways well lit, you’ll want to make sure the source that produces the light is also stunning. Crown molding It’s odd how many people look up when deciding if the house is right for them. That’s why so many realtors suggest adding crown molding. It’s a simple
If you love the satisfaction of fixing things and are hoping to get a higher offer on your house, here are five DIY projects that may increase your home’s resale value.

addition that adds a touch of charm and makes a big statement about the value of the home. Backsplash Buyers pay a lot of attention to the kitchen and the bathroom. One of the most eye-catching effects you can add is a backsplash around the sink and the counter space. Front yard Backyards are great, but when you’re selling your home, the front yard is where buyers make their first impression. Go beyond well-trimmed hedges and green lawns by building decorative fixtures such as a bench, flower crates made of reclaimed wood or other such projects that combine craftsmanship and taste. Flooring Carpet is fast going the way of wallpaper, and there are few home buyers out there who prefer carpet to wood or tile floors. Rip that carpet out! Depending on your skill level, you can choose to cut, sand, stain and install the floorboards or tile yourself. Your DIY remodeling project doesn’t have to be complicated if you use the right equipment. To learn more, call 1-877-ROTOZIP or visit www.rotozip.com.

FOOD
BULK BUYING MYTHS Purchase just enough
DON’T CONFUSE BULK BUYING WITH CLUB SHOPPING. “Buying bulk” doesn’t refer to the amount you have to buy, but rather to how a store presents products for purchase. Bulk foods like spices or grains are presented in large bins, allowing you to purchase exactly as much or as little as you need, rather than locking you into purchasing pre-packaged amounts. It’s an approach that particularly makes sense when you need just a small amount of something, or want to try something new but aren’t sure you’ll like it. This time of year buying in bulk can be a great way to experiment with new recipes, stock your spice shelf, and even discover ideas for creative recipes. Things to consider: 1. You can buy exactly the amount you want. Perhaps you’re trying a new recipe that calls for an exotic spice you’ve never tried before. You won’t spend money on more than you need, nor end up with leftover spice you may not use again anytime soon.
26
The Grand Season family
January 2017
2. Spice up your rack. Your spice rack probably contains some staples you use often. Bulk buying allows you to add some new flavors to the rack without worrying about being stuck with a bunch of something you don’t really care for. 3. It’s economical. Buying in bulk is less costly. Packaged versions of the same teas or spices typically cost considerably more because it takes energy and resources to make and transport packages, as well as to dispose of the shipping packaging that protects the product from the distribution center to the store. 4. It’s green. Since bulk foods, spices, herbs and teas are typically presented in reusable containers in stores, there’s less packaging going into the waste stream. What’s more, bulk foods are more likely to be locally produced, so the costs and environmental impact of transporting them is less than with packaged products. www.grandseasonfamily.com
FOOD
KEEP YOUR COOL It’s just lunch!
Your everyday family routine is busy—homework, sports practice, and packing school lunches. A study recently conducted by Nalgene, asked parents for their take on packing lunch. Below are some tips based on their feedback to help you keep your cool on hectic school days. 1. REMEMBER, IT’S JUST LUNCH How you pack lunch doesn’t go on anyone’s college application. It also isn’t a reflection of your parenting style. 2. SMUSHED ISN’T GOOD Kids don’t eat smushed foods. Do yourself a favor and put an end to the whining with a durable, hard case lunch box that you can pack a variety of ways. Check out the Lunch Box Buddy at Nalgene.com. 3. KEEP IT IN PERSPECTIVE Put things in perspective. Packing lunch is definitely not the worst household chore. When asked if they’d rather clean the toilet than pack school lunches for their children—packing lunches was the clear preference.
For Advertising Information Call (623) 594-1630
4. HAVE YOUR KIDS HELP When packing lunches, involve your children. Lunches should include a protein, fruit, vegetable, water and snack. Look for pre-packaged fruit and veggies at the market. Ask your kids to help pack their fruits, veggies water and snacks in their lunchbox. Keep lunch items in a specific drawer in your refrigerator. Then for their protein, pack their favorite sandwich, or diced meat and cheeses.

LOVE
LIGHT A FIRE
Reignite the spark with your spouse
1. Create rules of connection Is your life so busy that your spouse seems more like your roommate than your lover? If you feel like between your responsibilities with work, parenting, kids activities and volunteering you barely have time for anything other than a “goodnight kiss.” It’s important to remember that communication, affection and time together are key to maintaining a happy relationship. Take a few moments today to try these ideas to reignite the spark that once burned bright. As you know, relationships are like any other important living thing—they need to be nurtured and cared for in order grow and thrive. Here are four ideas for you to consider as you travel on the path of reconnection.
28
The Grand Season family
January 2017
When life gets busy, making plans to connect on a regular basis is key to reigniting and maintaining your intimate relationship. One couple I know cuddles every morning and every night they are together. This has become part of their routine, and even though sometimes they are both tired or rushed, they set the alarm five minutes earlier or go to bed five minutes later to make sure that this happens.
2.Build in spontaneity and adventure While scheduled “together time” is important, you can also mix it up and keep things exciting with activities that are fun and spontaneous. Surprise your partner with a gourmet breakfast in bed. Crank up some great music and have an impromptu dance party in the middle of the kitchen.
3. Make flirtation and intimacy a priority Send each other a text that say’s “I love you” or look through old photos of when you first met and then plan a date to relive some of your first outings together. When it comes to sex and intimacy, find
www.grandseasonfamily.com
time for moments when you allow yourselves to get close physically—even if it is simply giving each other shoulder massages before bed.
4. Be interesting and interested One great way to connect with your partner is to be genuinely interested in what that person is thinking, feeling and doing. When your mate is in the mood to talk, ask questions, discuss favorite activities or what funny thing happened at work that day. For those moments when you’re both “brain dead,” create a jar of quirky questions to take turns answering when you need a break. Think outside the box— try these on for size! • “If you owned an island, what type of businesses would you allow on your island?” • “If you had the opportunity to make a movie of one of your favorite stories, which one would it be?” • “If you could learn to do something in a day, what would it be?” Stop making excuses! Make time to engage, touch, talk, listen and, most of all, connect with the person who stole your heart all those years ago.
New Year— New You! Don’t let leg pain or varicose veins slow you down in 2017! Find relief from:

FUN
COLD & CLOUDY 3 ways to enjoy being inside
Living in the Valley of the Sun offers more beautiful days than bad. But when the weather doesn’t cooperate, it can be easy to feel restless when you’re stuck inside. Instead of getting frustrated, take the time to find ways to have fun while being home.
Reorganize or redecorate
Consider purchasing affordable, decorative baskets to hold papers, books and other items that can clutter your home. Once organized, you can add accent pillows and decorative accessories like lamps, throws and pictures to complete the look. (See page 42 for ideas)
Movie day
Instead of making a trip to the movie theater, bring the movie theater home—complete with all the trimmings. Gather some of your favorite movies, snacks and candies for your own little film festival. Consider sticking to a theme, like a favorite actor, genre or era.
Snatch up a book
Spend a relaxing afternoon working your way through a book on your “must read” list. Find a quiet, comfortable space you enjoy, and leave your smart phone in another room so you won’t be tempted by interruptions. Whether curled up with a book or hosting family and friends for a movie extravaganza, never underestimate the fun you can have in those rare moments when weather doesn’t cooperate.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

DECORATE
FRESH DIGS Refresh your home
Now that the decorations, lights and clutter from the holidays have finally found the way to the trash or storage, do you feel the need to refresh a special room in your home? If so, there are many options that spruce up your room with several simple items that will make a big impact. Add color A great place to start to spruce up a room is by merely changing accent colors, and the smaller decorative items around the room. You can add a bounty of colorful throw pillows (which can be found at a variety of stores depending on your budget). Then, think about adding a new plush blanket in a strong solid color. Not only will the solid color tie your pillows together, it will provide a soft item to snuggle up with.

Replace a piece of furniture If adding a splash of color with pillows isn’t enough, think about purchasing a new piece of accent furniture—perhaps crafted in your favorite color, or with distressed wood and colorful handles. A small accent piece can be an affordable way to organize those items that pile up on the coffee table, and make your home feel cluttered.
January 2017
Add decorative touches Another option is to purchase accent pieces such as light fixtures, canvas photographs, or other decorative items that ignite your interests and passions. You can also take a simple approach and just pick up a new candle and cool placemat to set on your favorite table.
The time you take to refresh your home— might also refresh your soul. www.grandseasonfamily.com
