Dill planted near tomatoes will draw caterpillars away from the fruits. And it’s delicious. Got poison ivy? The maddening itch might find relief from coffee grounds or a cooled cuppa. It contains anti-inflammatories. If you have a little bit of touchup paint left in your gallon can, transfer it to a mason jar. Write the exact color and brand on the lid, and it will be much easier to store.

Keep a pretty basket by your front door for anything you need to take along when you leave. This can be store returns, backpacks, exercise gear for the gym, your sunglasses, whatever. When you leave the house, check the basket! Need to chill a bottle of wine quickly? Wet a kitchen towel, then wrap it around the wine. Twist the ends to secure, and put the whole thing in the freezer for 30 minutes. Remove all of the air from a plastic storage bag with a drinking straw. Slip the straw into the bag and close as much as possible. Then suck any air out through the straw, and quickly pull out and close in a single motion. Your leftovers will stay fresh longer, and foods may stack better in the freezer.

YOU

GRIT

Cultivate mental toughness Life is an amazing journey filled with plenty of ups and downs! Just when you think you can’t move forward, you realize you have made it through the storm. Then, you realize the last storm has given you the strength you need for the next season of life. During your next storm, think about this quote, “Not all storms come to disrupt your life, some come to clear your path.”

Experts say these skills also help people weather the storms of life:

1. Resilience in the face of adversity

Resilience in an integral part of mental toughness. Resilience or grit, is the ability to keep moving forward in spite of challenges, rejection, setbacks, obstacles, and disappointments. It’s the ability to never give up, no matter what.

2. Emotional intelligence

Many experts now believe that a person’s emotional intelligence quotient (EQ) may be more important than their IQ, and plays a larger role in the achievement of success, the quality of relationships, and overall happiness. EQ is the ability to understand our own and the emotions and reactions of others. Without this ability you’re lost before you’ve started.

3. Focus

It’s possible to develop your mental toughness by keeping your attention on your long-term goals and not getting side-tracked by temporary setbacks. An unwavering focus helps you to keep perspective in the face of sudden setbacks. Don’t let short–term profits, negative feedback, or a hectic schedule prevent you from taking the next step towards your goal.

4. Commitment

Mentally tough people are more consistent than others. They don’t miss deadlines, appointments or meetings. Part of mental toughness is a commitment to always show up, to always deliver and to not get side-tracked, to always finish what you have started.

5. A realistic perspective on failure

Knowing how to handle failure is an important aspect of being mentally strong. Michael Jordan said: “In my career I’ve missed over 9,000 shots, lost almost 300 games, 26 times I’ve been trusted to make the gamewinning shot and I missed. I failed over and over again in my life and that’s why I succeed–I can accept failure.”

6. An optimistic mind-set

People who are mentally tough tend to be optimistic because they have confidence in their ability and they believe in their vision. It’s also an optimistic attitude that sees one through tough times and challenges. It is the hope created by a positive mind-set that keeps many people going long after others have given up.
