NOTE
Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!
month you can share Joy with those who need it most.
December is an amazing time of the year here in Arizona! The cooler weather has definitely put me in the mood to decorate and embrace every day as we get closer to the holidays. I don’t know about you, but I love this time of year. It seems that people are friendlier and happier.
As you prepare to celebrate the holidays with your family, don’t forget those who might be struggling this holiday season. Reach out and invite those without a place to belong, to join your celebration. The greatest gift you give just may be your greatest Joy of this season.
The theme for The Grand Season Family this month is Joy. I feel the holiday season is full of opportunities to share Joy with each person we encounter as we prepare for holiday festivities. I love the song, Joy to the World! As a child, the church I attended hosted a huge Christmas production every year— (at least in the eyes of a 12-yearold). The show always ended the same way, one of the performers with an angelic voice would sing “Joy to the World,” and then the congregation would join in while lighting candles. That song always gave me hope and made me want to be a person to share my Joy with others!
As you enjoy The Grand Season Family, I encourage to take a moment to visit one of our advertisers this month and thank them for making our publication possible.
I was inspired by this quote by Robert Murray McCheyne, “Joy is increased by spreading it to others.” I’m not sure what is your favorite holiday activity, but I hope this

YOU
HOLIDAY BLUES Has the Grinch robbed you of joy?
This time of year, it can be hard to be joyful if something is getting in the way? Conflict. Disappointment. Fear. Anger. These are emotions you have felt at one point or another in your relationships. In healthy relationships, issues that cause these emotions are merely stepping-stones to a more fulfilling relationship. But for others, these feelings can block the growth of a relationship. The difference in whether an issue will yield growth or disease, determines the ability of the person who has been hurt to forgive. While learning to forgive may not be easy, it is necessary. If you feel the Grinch has stolen your joy this holiday season, it might be time to look at how you can use forgiveness to move forward.
Forgiveness requires an apology
Sure, we’d all like a heartfelt apology from the person who hurt us. Your job is to ask for an apology, if you are comfortable doing so—just understand that your ability to forgive is not dependent on anyone else’s words or actions.
Forgiveness is not a one-time event
Particularly for deep-rooted injuries, meaningful forgiveness can take years to achieve. But we can always begin the process of forgiveness and deal with the resurgences of anger as they arise.
Forgiveness doesn’t mean you have to like the person
Forgiveness demonstrates your character, it’s not proof of another person’s. You don’t have to trust the person you forgive, or even like them.
Forgiveness requires confronting the person
Often, it is best to confront the person who hurt you. This allows you to articulate how the person’s words or actions hurt you, which may provide a psychological release. However, if you do not feel safe approaching the person, do not put yourself in a dangerous situation.
10
Learning to forgive may be the single most important thing you can do to grow in your relationships. Understanding the importance of forgiveness can allow you to enjoy healthy relationships, without letting the inevitable hurt that comes from loving others destroy you. The Grand Season family

LOVE
STRONG BONDS Healthy traits of a lasting relationship
Marriage is an amazing journey. However, not every year is as magical as you might have imagined. Despite the ups and downs, following are several traits of a happy and healthy relationship.
1. You Speak Your Mind
Relationships thrive when couples can express themselves freely and honestly. That means no topic is off-limits, and you both feel heard. Consistent communication is vital to building a lasting life together.
12
The Grand Season family

2. You Have Your Own Space
Just because you’re in love doesn’t mean you have to spend every moment together. Taking time to pursue your own interests and friendships keeps your relationship fresh and gives you both the opportunity to grow as individuals—even while you’re growing as a couple.
3. You Fight
Disagreements are normal, so if you aren’t fighting, chances are you’re holding back. But when people in healthy relationships fight, they fight productively and fairly. That means avoiding name-calling or put-downs. It also means striving to understand your partner instead of trying to score points. And when you’re wrong? You apologize.

Tankless Water Heaters
4. You Make Decisions Jointly
You don’t call all the shots—neither does your partner. From what movie to see to how many children to have, you make decisions together and listen to each other’s concerns and desires. Sure, this may mean you watch Transformers again on Saturday night—but on Sunday night, it’s your turn.
5. You Find Joy
Healthy relationships are full of laughter and fun. This doesn’t mean you’re giddy every hour of the day—or that your partner doesn’t drive you up the wall sometimes— but it does mean that your life together is mostly happy in sometimes simple ways.

6. You Treat Each Other With Kindness
Nothing is a stronger sign of a healthy relationship than treating the person you love with care, consideration, empathy, and appreciation. If you find yourself showing more respect to people you hardly know than you show your partner, take a step back and revisit your priorities.
Prefer the Older Tech? No Problem. That’s Easy For Us!
7. You Let Things Go
Your partner will annoy you. You will annoy him or her, too. You will say things you don’t mean. You will behave inconsiderately. The important thing is how you deal with all this. So they forgot to pick up milk for the second time? Tell them you’re disappointed, of course—then let it go.
8. You Are Intimate
Sex is an important part of healthy relationships, but it’s only one part, and it’s different than intimacy, which is less about physical satisfaction than about bonding, friendship, and familiarity. If you’re in a healthy relationship, you’ll feel connected—in and out of bed.
Air Conditioning • Electrical • Plumbing • Water Treatment
9. You Talk to Your Partner, Not to Other People
When you have issues and concerns, you share them with your partner, not your coworkers at Happy Hour. You’ll always have your friends as a sounding board, of course, but not as a crutch to avoid hard conversations with your significant other. For Advertising Information Call (623) 594-1630

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS
Try something old or new!
Traditions are a family’s way to pass down important events and memories, associated with a specific holiday. For instance, at Thanksgiving, you ate a turkey, played football outside and ate pie until you could eat no more. The greatest thing about traditions is they can be started at any given point, and can be used to help your family cultivate a deep bond, or can signal to new friends that they are indeed a part of your family traditions. Consider using the following ideas to cultivate your family’s Christmas Traditions:

KIDS
CAPTURE THE MAGIC
Make together time matter
If you often find yourself wishing that everyone could just get along, that you could somehow tap into those moments of family harmony, but then the ebb and flow of life carries you along before you can do anything about it, take heart: You don’t need to wait for the next family holiday to recapture the magic. Try working these 5 ideas into your life and make the most of your family’s time together.
1. Unplug, Unplug, Unplug
3. Maintain family routines
2. Divide and Conquer
4. Don’t get caught up in what everyone is doing wrong
Yes, we all know we should do a little less staring into our phones, but recent studies show that the very sight of screens (even if switched off!) can result in more shallow interactions between people who are spending time together. Silence your phone and encourage everyone else to do the same. If your kids are going through a rough patch of not getting along, experts suggest one parent taking one child out while the other stays home with the other—or splitting up on a family outing, then coming back together for a meal—can give everyone a break from a dynamic that they might be stuck in. Similarly, parents should prioritize regular date nights where they can catch up with each other.
18
The Grand Season family
December 2019
Family rituals, like special weekend meals, movie or game nights, religious worship or even the smaller everyday ones like a regular family dinner, provide a predictable framework for being together that is comforting for everyone and that makes them feel happy at being a member of the group. If you find yourself trapped in a loop of frustration at something one of your family members is doing, stop and remind yourself of a time recently when that person did something good.
5. Greet with a hug and part with a kiss
Hugging produces happy chemicals in the brain. Plus, who doesn’t want to start and end the day on a loving note? Doing so will increase your well-being and stimulate good feelings all around.

INGREDIENTS 15 baked sugar cookies 1 (8-oz.) block cream cheese, softened to room temperature 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract Pinch kosher salt 2 tsp. coconut oil 1 1/4 c. white chocolate chips Christmas sprinkles, for garnish
DIRECTIONS Line a small baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large food processor, process cookies until sandy. Alternatively, place cookies in a large resealable plastic bag and use a wooden spoon to crush cookies into crumbs. In a large bowl, stir to combine crushed cookies, cream cheese, vanilla, and salt. Using a small cookie scoop, form cookie mixture into small balls and place on the cooking sheet. Repeat until all mixture is used and place baking sheet in freezer for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, mix coconut oil with white chocolate chips. Microwave on low in 30 second intervals, stirring in between, until white chocolate is completely melted.
Whipped Cream 1 c. mini chocolate chips, plus more for topping 2 (8-oz.) packages whipped cream, thawed 8 chocolate chip cookies (like Chips Ahoy), plus more for topping
Repeat layers until you’ve reached the top of the dish. Cover the entire trifle with remaining whipped cream. Refrigerate at least 2 hours, to soften the cookie layers. Top with chocolate chips and crumbled cookie pieces before serving.

HANUKKAH
CELEBRATE TRADITION December 22- 30, 2019 The eight-day Jewish celebration known as Hanukkah or Chanukah commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend. Jews had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. Hanukkah, which means “dedication” in Hebrew, begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and begins December 22, 2019 The events that inspired the Hanukkah holiday took place during a
particularly turbulent phase of Jewish history. Around 200 B.C., Judea—also known as the Land of Israel—came under the control of Antiochus III, the Seleucid king of Syria, who allowed the Jews who lived there to continue practicing their religion. His son, Antiochus IV Epiphanes, proved less benevolent: Ancient sources recount that he outlawed the Jewish religion and ordered the Jews to worship Greek gods. In 168 B.C., his soldiers descended upon Jerusalem, massacring thousands of people and desecrating the city’s holy Second Temple by erecting an
COMPLETE
altar to Zeus and sacrificing pigs within its sacred walls. The Hanukkah celebration revolves around the kindling of a nine-branched menorah, known in Hebrew as the hanukkiyah. On each of the holiday’s eight nights, another candle is added to the menorah after sundown; the ninth candle, called the shammash (“helper”), is used to light the others. Jews typically recite blessings during this ritual and display the menorah prominently in a window as a reminder to others of the miracle that inspired the holiday.

LIFE HACKS Before frying, sprinkle a little salt in your pan. This will help keep the oil from splattering. Adding vodka to your shampoo can strengthen you hair, prevent dry scalp, and stop dandruff. If you are coughing uncontrollably, raise your hands above your head and it will stop. Use toothpaste to clear up hazy car headlights.
SIMPLE THINGS Little ideas to make life easier
One of the best ways to study is to pretend that you’re going to have to teach the material. Pineapple juice is five times more effective than cough syrup. It also prevents colds and the flu. Daytime naps help to improve your memory and cut the risk of heart disease. Can’t brush your teeth after a meal? Gargle salt water instead. You’ll be amazed at all the gunk that comes out.
When proofreading, read the document out loud to yourself. Your mouth will catch errors you might glance over. Did you know that it’s beneficial to lick small cuts? A variety of compounds in human saliva can speed up healing. Placing a banana peel over a bruise for 10-30 minutes will almost completely remove its color.
Reading a book before bed make your eyes tired. As a result, your brain is tricked into feeling tired and falling asleep is much easier. Get rid of rust by rubbing it with aluminium foil soaked in vinegar.
LOVE
Feeling depressed? Drink water, you may just be chronically dehydrated. While driving, move your seat as far back as you can while still being able to touch your pedals. This will help prevent speeding.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

MONEY
COMMON QUESTIONS Curious about your savings?
Q: I’m tempted to cut back on retirement savings to help with my daughter’s college costs. A: Fidelity recommends having four times your salary in retirement savings by age 40 and six times by age 50. If you’re past those goal-posts and socking away north of 15 percent each year, you can dial back for a bit to help with college. “But as soon as your kids graduate, you have to try to double down on retirement,” says Coombes. Nearly a quarter of parents saving for retirement also expect their kids to support them during retirement. “There’s a real risk of becoming a burden to them when you retire and, in turn, risking their financial security,” says Coombes. Q: I’m in my 50s and don’t feel as on track for retirement as my friends. A: First, stop sizing up other people’s nest eggs. You might think peer pressure will motivate you to save more, but a study in The Journal of Finance found the opposite is true. Kick your savings into high gear by increasing contributions to your employer-sponsored retirement plan (if you have access to one) and your IRA. Starting at age 50, you can stash an extra $6,000 a year in catch-up contributions in a 40l(k), plus an extra $1,000 in an IRA, for a total annual savings of $31,000 across both accounts. Automatic contributions are the best way to turn good intentions into actual savings, says Godwin. And if your kids haven’t left home yet, know that your retirement savings may rise by up to 1 percent once they do, according to a study by the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. Downsizing to a house with cheaper upkeep, lower taxes, and a pint-size mortgage could free up money to invest. Q: I’m retired but finding my Income Isn’t enough. A: Even though you’re feeling pinched, it’s worth paying for a meeting with a finance pro. “There are three things they’ll look at: Can you lower your taxes? Can you increase your returns by investing differently? And are your Social Security benefits as high as possible?” says Matt Fellowes, PhD, founder of United Income, a money-management firm for aging households. Go to plannersearch.org to find a certified financial planner who specializes in retirement for people with your net worth. Thinking of heading back to work? Loop in your adviser. “You want to make sure the net effect of the job is going to make up for any money you might lose due to higher taxes or lower benefits,” says Fellowes.
