EDITOR’S

FUN

NOTE

Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year! There’s something about the decorations, music and memories that make me smile. While most people dream of a white Christmas, I personally prefer the warm glow of cacti dressed up in lights.

MAKE MEMORIES

Try something old or try something new! Traditions are a family’s way to pass down important event and memories associated with a specific holiday. The greatest thing about traditions is they can be started at any given point, and can be used to help your family cultivate a deep bond, or can signal to new friends, that they are indeed a part of your family traditions. Consider using the following ideas to cultivate your family’s Christmas Traditions:

1. Instead of a snow ball fight have a flour fight. Turn some Christmas music on, go outside, and get messy! 2. Get a few bottles of shaving cream and have each member of the family make a Santa beard on their face.

I know this holiday season will be different for all of us. Instead of hosting huge gatherings with those you love, due to COVID we will all be celebrating in a simpler setting. It’s my hope that you and yours stay healthy this holiday season. I also hope you can find new traditions to celebrate with your immediate family and neighbors. Regardless of what your holidays look like, I hope you enjoy each moment by focusing on what you have—not what you don’t. Here’s to wishing you a magical Christmas and a Happy New Year! Melissa McCullough Editor/Associate Publisher

3. Wrap 25 books. Kids can open one book each night leading up to Christmas. 4. Hide the last presents on Christmas day and make clues as to where your kids can find them. 5. Give matching Christmas pajamas for the whole family on Christmas Eve. 6. Make reindeer food out of dried oats and glitter and have the kids sprinkle it in the backyard on Christmas Eve.

7. Watch Polar Express and drink hot chocolate every Christmas Eve. 8. Take your kids shopping for a toy to donate during the Christmas season.

9. Write a letter to your kids and put it in a clear plastic, fillable ornament ball .Have a camp out one night under the Christmas tree. 10. Booby trap the children’s bedroom doors by creating a web of green and red streamers the kids have to break through on Christmas morning. 11. Photocopy your children’s letters to Santa each year and make a book out of them when they are older. 12. Make a red and green paper gratitude chain. Each night leading up to Christmas, each person writes what they are grateful for and adds it to the chain. 13. Have your children make gift coupons for people in the family (e.g. this coupon is good for one complimentary room cleaning).

If you don’t feel like yourself, or are feeling down because your hopes for the holidays have changed, try these ideas to boost your mood.

YOU

IN A FUNK? Things that you can do if you’re feeling a little down

1. Take a deep breathe. If you feel like you’re losing control, it can help calm you down to focus on your own breathing. 2. Talk with somebody else about what’s going on in their life. Hearing about what’s happening to others may help you tune out a bit and offer a little perspective on your own issues. 3. Spend some time with a pet. Whether it’s yours, or someone else’s, petting an animal can really help improve your mood. 4. Watch your favorite TV show. It’s a great distraction. 5. Take care of some plants. Water them, trim their leaves, repot them in fresh soil... it can feel empowering to nurture something, but it’s also nice to connect with nature, even if it’s in a small way. 6. Drink a glass of water. You might be dehydrated. When was the last time you drank a glass of water just for the sake of drinking it? 7. Take a different route home. It’s an easy way to get out of your routine, and you might find something new along the way. 8. Put on your favorite article of clothing. It could be your comfy pajamas, or your sequined jacket ... what’s most important is that it makes you feel really good. 9. Make a playlist with the songs that you loved as a teenager, and enjoy the nostalgia. 10. Read a book. Get lost in someone else’s story. 11. Get a blank sheet of paper and a pencil, and just start doodling. You don’t have to draw anything in particular, just do something with your hands. 12. Plan your next trip. Even if you have no idea when it might happen, think about how–when the opportunity arises–you’re going to be all ready for it. 13. Try to put into writing exactly what is making you feel like this. 14. Spend five short minutes out in open air. If you’re feeling down at home, or at the office, take a little time to get outside and to feel less suffocated. 15. If you spend most of your time on social networks, comparing yourself with others, take a break. But, if social media helps you forget your problems, by all means, feel free to indulge.
