EDITOR’S
NOTE
February is here and that means love is in the air! The best thing about love is sharing it with someone else; whether it be your spouse, partner, children, parents, friends or a complete stranger. This month’s issue of The Grand Season Family is focused on helping you love those in your life well. While writing the content for this issue, it seemed everywhere I turn I’m being reminded about what love should be. Contrary to popular opinion, love is not just a feeling or emotion. It requires action. I’m inspired by 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, which spells out what love really is: Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong doing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.
This issue of The Grand Season Family is packed with great ideas on how to share your love with others. This month, I hope you have the opportunity to slow down and intentionally impact someone else’s life—by sharing your love. And when you do, I hope you’ll share your stories with me at melissa@thegrandseason.com. Thank you for supporting The Grand Season Family and our advertisers. Let love guide you! YOU
LOVE YOURSELF Learn how to love yourself well
In its simplest form, loving yourself comes down to your actions. More specifically, loving yourself is about consistently carrying out actions that feel aligned with your core beliefs. If you merely tell yourself that you’re working on loving yourself, but you’re a workaholic, drug abuser, existing on less than three hours of sleep per night, secretly resenting yourself for breaking that person’s heart a few years ago, and living off of fast food and energy drinks, you’re sending a different message to your heart through those actions.

You are the only one who can take care of you, so create habits in life to refuel your soul. Try these simple ideas as you start caring for yourself:
“Advocates for YOUR Home Improvement”
SERVING THE VALLEY SINCE 1974!
Move often
When you move, you allow the various forms of energy in your body the space to shift around. If you spend all day sitting in front of a computer (or TV), then your creative, emotional, sexual energies tend to get trapped in your body. So instead of sitting in an office chair or couch, get up and move as often as you can.
Limit the junk your brain consumes
Just like your body feels grumpy if you feed it awful things consistently, so too does your mood suffer when you feed your mind garbage. Seek to fill your time with positive entertainment, and delete the continual feed of negativity.
Invest in your sleep
You spend roughly a third of your life sleeping, so you might as well get good at it. The way you sleep can either deprive you and deplete you, or it can energize and uplift you.

Be intentional in how you spend your time
Enforce real boundaries in your life so that you carve out time for the things that matter the most to you. Say “no” to people you don’t like spending time with. Spend time with your favorite people on a regular basis. Carve out time in your calendar to make time for fun, lightness, and playfulness.
Make time for rest and relaxation
Between all of your healthy meals, optimized sleep habits, and playfulness, you want to make sure you’re also allowing yourself the time and space to breathe and relax. Take naps when you feel like it. Rest and relaxation are vital to loving yourself.
Spend time alone
Whether you’re single, in a relationship, or married, one of the best ways that you can cultivate a loving relationship with yourself is to regularly spend some time alone. For Advertising Information Call (623) 594-1630

LOVE
FAN THE FLAME Reignite the passion in your relationship
Healthy relationships grow and change throughout marriage—but perhaps you’ve unintentionally placed your spouse at the bottom of your “to do” list, and realize it’s time to prioritize your marriage. Challenge yourself to rekindle your love again with these ideas:
1. Get closer by finding some distance in your marriage.
Make a rule that for the first ten minutes of any night out, you will not discuss the “business” of your relationship: no kid talk, no work recap. You may just remember what having a fun conversation is like again!
2. Make a top 10 list.
Spend a few moments jotting down your greatest hits from your years together—from the biggies to the smaller memories. Surprise your partner with the list—leave it on the bed, email it, sit down after dinner and read it together. The exercise will give you an important reminder of why you picked each other in the first place.
3. Fall in love... with yourself.
It may sound counter intuitive, but one of the best ways to increase the passion within your relationship may be to find new ways to develop yourself outside of it. You can’t feel love for someone else, if you’re feeling crappy about your own life.
4. Give your partner a squeeze.
Have you touched your spouse today? If the only physical contact that you have with the person to whom you’re married on a typical day is a quick peck on the cheek before work or bed—it’s time to get your act together. Try simply hugging for thirty seconds. Hugging has been proven to boost levels of oxytocin, a hormone that increases feelings of bonding, particularly in women.
5. Take the one-a-day challenge.
The habit of criticism is hazardous to any relationship, and no one can happily survive in a marriage if they feel more judged than admired. Limit yourself to one criticism a day, figuring out which one matters most is a good exercise. Do this over time and you’ll see each other in a more positive light and likely rediscover why you fell in love in the first place.
6. Stop giving unsolicited advice.
Okay, so maybe you do know the correct, more efficient way to do everything, but what matters in a marriage is not who’s right, but that each person is dedicated to contributing to each other’s happiness. Remember, it’s not your job to correct your spouse.
7. Be realistic about relationship highs and lows.
Stop worrying that “the feeling is gone” and remember that even the best marriages get stuck sometimes, and if you’re focused on what’s wrong instead of bringing your best self to your marriage, that’s a good recipe for failure.

TRAVEL
ADVENTURE TIME Experienced travelers share how to score a deal
Let’s be honest, we all have a dream vacation we’re dying to take, but sometimes costs are prohibitive. But, if you’re open to traveling during the off-season, you can make your dream a reality without compromising your experience. Expert travelers suggest how to get the most out of traveling during the off-season.
Q
Use tripadvisor.com or other sites to get the real skinny on hotels and locations. You’ll see pictures of rooms posted by guests instead of the marketing photos. Plus, you’ll get the real deal about the staff, the location, and the overall experience of staying in the hotel.
Q
Q
Q
Q
Off-season doesn’t mean the wrong season, nor a time when a city should be avoided. It merely means less people are traveling during this time. You’ll be surprised by what you can experience without crowds, while enjoying a slower pace. It does mean deals and discounts. Huge tourist destinations are the best bet for sharp discounts in the off-season, because these economies are completely dependent on tourist income as opposed to business-travel income.
Q
You’ll save more on hotels than airfare if hotels can fill an otherwise empty room from for 25 or 50 percent of what they normally get. That money is just straight to their profit. Airlines just won’t fly as many trips.
Cities and major business centers don’t have an off-season. Unfortunately, when traveling to New York City, Boston, Washington, D.C. and Chicago, you probably won’t find great deals. So, if you find a good rate on airfare or a hotel, book it. If you want to get a taste of real local culture, ask the waiter, the bartender, or the bellhop where locals hang out. You’ll be sure to find some great spots that aren’t overpriced because they’re not dependent on tourism dollars.
Q
Calling a hotel, will usually help you secure better deals. If you find a specific deal online, or something through the hotel’s own social media marketing efforts, call the hotel and book it directly. You might be surprised how they’ll match or improve the deal.

GROWTH
FLIP THE SCRIPT
Looking for more out of life?
Look around you and you’ll see three kinds of people—those who hate their work, and complain bitterly, those who just tolerate their work and see it as a paycheck and aren’t looking for more, and finally, those who love their work, and relish it. The third category is a small subset of all individuals, but this group stands out because these are, most often, the people who are living life with purpose. Research indicates there are several common behaviors that set purposedriven people apart from others. If you’re looking for “more” out of life, take a closer look at these behaviors:
Discover your life’s meaning and purpose.
People living highly satisfying lives have found their purpose in life, and that purpose usually involves some aspect of turning their “mess into a message,” or using what they’ve learned as a means of being of service to others. People with a sense of purpose are driven, focused, committed, and lit up from the inside.
Commit to improving yourself.
Individuals who impact the world for the better know that they are not perfect. Innovators usually approach life with humility and with a loving, compassionate heart. This provides them with an openness to see, learn, and experience new things.
Cultivate mutually beneficial relationships.
Those with positive influence understand the power of relationships, connection, and engaging with the world openly. They know positive, supportive and authentic relationships are the foundational building blocks to anything and everything they want to achieve.
Embrace criticism.
Living life with a growth mindset allows one to release the need to be “right.” A growth mindset requires an openness to criticism, and the ability to use feedback in a positive way.
Find joy in the journey.
Purpose driven individuals don’t take shortcuts or go look for the easy answer. They embrace failure more readily than others as “information” that guides them. They are more fluid and flexible, and more open to the “how’s” because their ultimate goal is not about upholding their title, income, reputation, or power, but about identifying new ways to help and share what they know.

GREAT DATES
SHAKE IT UP!
Skip the movies, and try something new
Have you ever felt like you’re stuck in the “dating rut?” Try these ideas for some fresh date nights:
Restaurant tour Pick an area with a bunch of restaurants. Start with cocktails and appetizers at a restaurant with a bar or lounge, head somewhere different for the main course and finish up someplace else with fabulous desserts. Rent a boat for the afternoon If a sailboat is not your thing, rent a rowboat, paddle-boat, or kayak.
Host an indoor picnic Serve dinner on a picnic
blanket laid out in the living room. Open a bottle of wine with some favorite finger foods.
Learn a new activity together Take a dance or photography class or learn how to play shuffleboard.
Be tourists for the day Go sightseeing around your city. Stop inside places you often pass, but never go into. Recreate a memorable date Think of a favorite
past date and create it once again.
Take in amateur night Visit a local bar, club, or coffeehouse, and watch the amateurs display their talent. If you’re adventurous, get up there and try it yourself. Bowling Bowling is an old-school date idea with a
casual, relaxed feel. It not only makes a fun date, but also makes a great first date.
Be daring Go rock climbing, bungee jumping or sky diving.
Bingo Playing bingo is actually more fun than you might think. Find a local community organization, buy your cards, and get ready to shout “Bingo!”
Go skating Roller-skating is always fun, even if neither of you have ever done it. Ice skating is a great option as well.
Drive-In Another old-school date idea that’s making a comeback of late. There’s something so cozy about watching a movie at the drive-in. Amusement Park Ride roller coasters, eat cotton
candy, get your picture taken in the photo booth, try your hand at some carnival games, and check out the view from the top of the Ferris wheel.
Visit the Aquarium Aquariums aren’t just for
children, they’re also a great place for a date. Take a leisurely stroll while you survey the sea life.
Visit your local ballpark or stadium Get tickets to a professional game or cheer for your hometown favorite. Up, up and away Take a hot air balloon ride. Glide over the rooftops pointing out sights of interest or just enjoy floating on air. Check out Rainbow Ryders–they’re the best in the valley! 16

KIDS
ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER Ways to show your kids you love them
Children who feel important and worthy have higher self-esteem, a more positive outlook on life and healthier relationships, says Dr. Robert Myers. He also points out that these children tend to have an easier time handling conflict, are more respectful of others and are generally more well-rounded individuals. While many parents strive for perfection in raising their kids— this is an unrealistic goal. The bottom-line is children just want their parents to see, value and love them unconditionally—regardless of their performance. As a parent, you have the power to show your children just how much they matter to you—in what you say, do and in how you act. Here are some simple things you can do to show your kids how much they mean to you:
Tell Them You Love Them
Hug them, kiss them and tell them “I love you” every single day. You can even say how lucky you feel to be their parent— and say it often. These seem like such little things, but for kids, it makes a world of difference to hear their parents express genuine affection for them.
Ask Them About Their Day
Always ask them about their day to show them that you’re interested in what goes on in their lives — the good, the bad and the ugly.
Give Them Your Undivided Attention
When you ask them a question, or when they’re trying to tell you about something, make sure to give them your undivided attention. Put the phone down and look them in the eyes as they’re speaking.
Give Praise When Praise Is Due
Praise them when they’ve done something worthy of praise. Tell them you’re proud of them for even the smallest of accomplishments.
Remind Them of Their Strengths
Regularly remind them of all of their good qualities, and encourage them to continue honing those strengths.
Set Clear Boundaries
They may not like them, but they respect them—and they know they need them.
18
The Grand Season family
February 2020
Say “You” More
Make a conscious effort to begin or end sentences with the word “you.” “You are funny,” or “I like reading books with you.” This is a subtle way to ensure the focus of your words is on them.
Share Your World
Open up and give them a glimpse into your own vulnerabilities (when appropriate). Just make sure you’re still respecting the boundaries that you set, and that you’re not “oversharing.” At the end of the day, you’re still the parent, and they’re still the child.
Laugh with Them
Laughter isn’t only the best medicine—it’s also the best way to bring people closer together. Sharing in an experience that makes you both laugh reinforces and strengthens your connection to each other. www.grandseasonfamily.com
Show Up
Attend their extracurricular actives as often as you can. Even if you can’t stay the whole time, just showing up speaks volumes.
Respect Their Space and Their Feelings
Even when you can’t relate. Letting them know that you hear them is all that matters.
Don’t Talk Down to Them
They may be little, but they’re still humans and deserve to be treated with respect.
Know Who Their Friends Are
Make the effort to actually know their friends’ names— not just, “That girl with the blonde hair” or “That kid who wears a lot of purple.” And make sure to ask about them often.
For Advertising Information Call (623) 594-1630
Know What’s Going On at School
Let them know that you’re around if they need help with homework, and if something is beyond your knowledge, don’t be afraid to hire a tutor or homework helper to step in.
Let Them Into Your Life Ask Them What They Think
Ask for their opinions on things and respect their ideas. You don’t have to agree with them on everything; the important part is to make them feel heard.
Be Patient With Them
Forgive them for their mistakes and remind them that you make mistakes too.
Acknowledge When You’re Wrong If you make a mistake or are wrong about something, don’t be afraid to say “I’m sorry.” Not only will they appreciate your selfawareness and humility, but they’ll also be more likely to learn from your example.

Chocolate-Covered Cake Balls INGREDIENTS
Cooking spray 1 box cake mix, plus ingredients called for on box 3/4 c. (1 1/2 sticks butter), softened 3 c. powdered sugar 3 tbsp. heavy cream 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract Pinch kosher salt 2 c. white chocolate chips 2 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips 4 tbsp. coconut oil, divided Sprinkles, for decorating
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350° and grease a 9”-x-13” baking pan with cooking spray. Prepare cake mix according to box instructions and spread evenly into prepared pan. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 30 minutes. Let cool then break cake into small crumbs. In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat butter until smooth, then add sugar and beat until combined. Add cream, vanilla, and salt and mix until smooth. (Add more cream if frosting is too thick.) Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Stir cake crumbs into frosting, then form mixture into tablespoon-sized balls. Place on a prepared baking sheet and refrigerate until firm, 1 hour. In a deep-sided heatproof bowl, microwave white chocolate and 2 tablespoons coconut oil in 30 second intervals until melted. Repeat process with semisweet chocolate. Dip chilled cake balls into melted chocolate, shaking off excess chocolate. Immediately decorate with sprinkles and return to baking sheet. Refrigerate until hardened, 15 minutes.

LIFE HACKS
DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT Unique uses for duct tape
Braid an impromptu rope: Roll up three lengths of duct tape and then braid
them together to make a surprisingly strong rope. Bind a large wound: Use the tape to pull the skin together on both sides, then seek help. Make a sling: Tape the patient’s wrist then make a tape strap to run up and around the neck. Build a stretcher: Take two poles and run tape back and forth between them many times taking into account the size of the person. Fix a leaky hose: It doesn’t matter whether it’s a garden or vacuum hose. Wrap tightly. Remove a splinter: Place tape over the sliver and remove. Fix a screen: Put tape over tear to keep bugs out. LOVE Trap bugs: Place sticky-side up to catch crawlers. Clean pet hair: Wrap loop of tape and remove pet hair from clothes. Remove adhesive residue: Push tape onto residue and pull it off. Fix a leaky tent: Put duct tape on the seams.

TIPS
SAVE MONEY
On your grocery bill
Use a combination of tech tools, psychological tricks, and old-school know-how to lower your food costs, scoop up cash rebates, and stop eating so much of your paycheck.
SHOP HIGH AND LOW
Avoid shopping for foods placed at eye level. The way marketers arrange products in order to maximize profits is called a planogram: Expensive items stare you in the face (“eye level is buy level”), while less costly brands are often located below or above that. Don’t let them hypnotize you: Instead, look on the bottom and top shelves for the best deals.
SHOP HIGH AND LOW
Wear your earbuds and listen to up-tempo music while you shop, to avoid unnecessary purchases. The music played in supermarkets is deliberately slow so you’ll slow down, hang out longer and buy more. Consumers make 38 percent more purchases when slow music is playing.
Targeted, Cost-Effective, Direct Mail Advertising to Affluent, Active Lifestyle Communities. ASK ABOUT INSERTS !

TAX SEASON TIPS Make this year stress-free
MONEY
Taxes are an unavoidable fact of life. Unfortunately, they can be somewhat overwhelming, which can cause people to put the task off and miss the deadline. Use these tips for a stress-free tax season:
Get It Over With
The sooner you get your taxes filed, the sooner you can stop worrying about them. Early filing also means an earlier refund — if you’re due one — or time to plan to prepare to pay any owed taxes. To ensure it all happens on time, actually block out time in your calendar to sit down and work on your taxes. Be sure not to underestimate how much time is needed. If your situation has gotten more complicated over the last year, figure that into the equation.

The last thing anybody wants to hear is that they are being audited. You can avoid this anxiety by having the right tools on hand. Start by keeping your records filed in an organized way – both digitally and on paper with a filing cabinet that locks. As you do your taxes, it is a good idea to take your time, and do a practice run. A printing calculator is a good way to keep records of all necessary calculations. Nogales Sunset

Maximize Your Refund
While many people look forward to their tax refund and view it as a windfall, it is important to keep in mind that this money is simply your own income that you overpaid to the state and federal government throughout the year. That said, you should have a smart plan for using your refund wisely, so it’s not wasted on impulse purchases. A few good ideas for tax refunds is investing the money into a retirement account, using it to pay down debt or padding out your rainy-day fund. www.grandseasonfamily.com

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

CLEAN
EASY DOES IT
For those who are overwhelmed by their clutter, here are some great ways to get started de-cluttering, five minutes at a time.
De-cluttering your home doesn’t have to be overwhelming
1. Designate a spot for incoming papers. Papers often account for a lot of our clutter. This is because we put them in different spots. Designate an in-box tray or spot in your office and don’t put down papers anywhere but that spot.

2. Start clearing a starting zone. What you want to do is clear one area. This is your no-clutter zone. It can be a counter, or your kitchen table, or the three-foot perimeter around your couch. Wherever you start, make a rule: nothing can be placed there that’s not actually in use. Everything must be put away. Once you have that clutter-free zone, keep it that way! Each day slowly expand your no-clutter zone until it envelopes the whole house! 3. Clear off a counter. You want to get your house so that all flat spaces are clear of clutter. Maybe they have a toaster on them, maybe a decorative candle, but not a lot of clutter. So start with one counter. Clear off everything possible, except maybe one or two essential things. 4. Pick a shelf. Now that you’ve done a counter, try a shelf. It doesn’t matter what shelf. It could be a shelf in a closet, or on a bookshelf. Don’t tackle the whole bookshelf — just one shelf. Clear all non-essential things and leave it looking neat and clutter-free. 5. Pick up 5 things and find places for them. These should be things that you actually use, but that you just seem to put anywhere, because they don’t have a place of their own. If you don’t know exactly where things belong, you have to designate a good spot. Do this for everything in your home, a few things at a time. www.grandseasonfamily.com
HEALTH
FITNESS Don’t stress over these “bad” habits
Doing the right thing isn’t always easy—and nowhere is it more apparent than in the wellness world. Every day we’re bombarded by headlines warning us about the latest thing that’s slowing killing us. Best advice? Put energy toward big-picture goals, like following a balanced diet, getting regular exercise, and taking care of your mental well-being. When it comes to the following habits, drop the guilt and focus on what matters.
Diet Drinks
Juice, sodas, and teas made with zero-calorie sweeteners were once touted as healthy, magically calorie-free alternative to sugary beverages. Then came the backlash: Scary studies linked artificial sweeteners to cancer, heart disease and unhealthy gut bacteria. Findings have been inconclusive, and the truth is somewhere in the middle, says Adrienne Youdim. MD. Don’t have more than one of these drinks a day. She says: “Recent studies have linked two or more diet sodas a day with a higher risk for stroke and heart disease among postmenopausal women.” There’s no research showing a few diet sodas a week will harm you—especially if they help you kick the much worse habit of drinking sugary drinks.
Consuming Carbs
“Carbohydrates” has become a dirty word, with trendy diets cutting out carbs almost completely. The problem is, that’s extremely impractical. Carbs are the body’s top source of fuel, and the federal dietary guidelines for Americans recommends that 45-65 percent of daily calories come from carbohydrates. Without carbs, we’d have no energy, and we’d miss out on nutrients. A smarter strategy: Focus on reducing refined carbs and simple sugars (like white bread, pasta, and sweets) rather than cutting out all carbs—a group that by the way, includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes.
Your Afternoon Nap
There are few pleasures greater than the mid-afternoon snooze. Society frowns upon napping. It would be taboo at most working places, and at home, we often see it as lazy and unproductive. Certainly, needing a nap could signal that you’re sleep-deprived, and unexplained sleepiness might be a warning of an underlying health problem. But for most people, naps are a helpful way to catch up on lost hours of shut-eye. Short snoozes can have immediate benefits too. Research suggest that 30-minute power naps can improve concentration and energy.
Mindless Screen Time
Sitting has been dubbed the new smoking, with links to obesity and other health problems—especially when TV is involved. And spending a lot of time on social media has been associated with mental health and sleep problems. However, we all need ways to escape from the pressures of daily life. Checking Instagram or binging Netflix can fit the bill, as long as it’s done in moderation, and not causing harm to your personal and professional life. FACTS
STRANGE BUT TRUE
Romans thought that roses could prevent drunkenness. The old Pony Express has been romanticized in modern times, but it’s rarely pointed out that it was a financial failure. The mail delivery service actually lost an average of $13 for every item it carried. Those who study such things say that China gets more earthquakes than any other country.
Medical specialists say that the true definition of an insomniac is someone who wants to go to sleep but can’t. If you can’t go to sleep but aren’t really trying anyway, the term doesn’t apply to you. Pure water doesn’t conduct electricity; in fact, it’s an insulator. It’s the impurities in water that conduct electricity—making it a bad
idea to use a hair dryer in the shower. There are underground lakes so pure that you can safely change a light bulb in them. The neon sign was invented in France in 1910, but the first one didn’t come to the United States until 1923. That was the year a car dealership in Los Angeles put up two brightly lit “Packard” signs. The novelties literally stopped traffic in the streets.
According to a number of psychological surveys and studies, men have more friends early in life, while women have more friends when they’re older. All tortoises are turtles, but not all turtles are tortoises.
