NOTE
November is a month chalked full of reminders to count our blessings and various opportunities to reconnect with loved ones near and far. As a parent, I have tried to make it my goal to remind my young men the importance of counting our blessings daily, since we never know what our future will bring. This month’s issue of The Grand Season Family is all about gratitude. As I was writing this month, I began to think how fast this time of year slips by. It seems as though we are so busy checking off our lists and creating experiences for others, we forget to savor and enjoy all that is good in our lives. As I reflect, I want to encourage you to approach life with an attitude of gratitude. Don’t wait to tell your family and your friends how much you love them—tell them today! Live life with passion and be the person you wish other people would be.
During this holiday season, I hope your family will have the opportunity to reach out to those who are less fortunate. If you’re looking for a place to get involved, I’d suggest getting involved with Harvest Compassion Center’s Toy Drive. To learn more, reach out to Nicolee Thompson at nthompson@hccfeed1.org. Your generosity will change someone’s life forever! Thank you for your support of The Grand Season Family magazine. We truly appreciate you and the continued support you provide to our local advertisers. Happy Thanksgiving! Melissa McCullough Associate Publisher

YOU
KEEP CALM
Get in the spirit without losing your mind
The holidays can be filled with stress and joy, bundled into one emotionally charged season. Rodrigo Araujo, Ph.D., senior data scientist at Plasticity Labs, analyzed workplace stress and seasonality. He identified fall (October to December, including the winter holidays) as the unhappiest time of the year for people.
1. Make it a team effort
One of the biggest impacts on our stress (and happiness) is an increasingly busy and ever-fluctuating schedule. This causes an out-of-control feeling that can make our brains uncomfortable.
It’s tough to turn down invites from friends and colleagues, however, stress stems from being overextended. Saying “no” will help you prioritize your time and your mind.
The best way to combat this seasonal stress is to practice an attitude of gratitude. Here are some ways to keep your schedule from stressing you out.
10
The Grand Season family
Are you stressing to get everything accomplished for the holidays? Check off your to-do list with friends.
2. Give experiences, not stuff
Instead of shopping for stuff, give your loved ones the gift of your time by creating experiences you can enjoy together.
3. Be authentic
Host holiday events that resonate. Don’t kill yourself to create events that will impress others. Create opportunities to connect with others.
4. Say no
5. Save a vacation day
Take a day off just for you before the chaos of holidays begin. You might be surprised how this one day can enhance your mental health as you celebrate with your friends and family.
6. Volunteer
Schedule a time for your family and friends to help those who are less fortunate. You might volunteer at a soup kitchen, or perhaps give a family in need a holiday they’ll never forget.

LOVE
KEYS TO YOUR RELATIONSHIP What you need to know for joyful, lasting love Happiness within a relationship is hard to define. Not only is each relationship different, but within each relationship, each person defines happiness in an individual way. Some people view happiness as a peaceful conflict-free life. For some, happiness involves a tremendous amount of fun, great intimacy or lots of laughter. Whatever your definition, it directly correlates to your expectations, desires, wants and needs—and those things can change over time. What holds constant are 7 specific behaviors and attributes that can almost guarantee the likelihood of long-term success and happiness in a relationship. If you work toward incorporating these keys into your daily life, you will experience greater joy and less conflict in your primary relationships.
1. Respect
Every successful relationship is built on a foundation of respect. Respect means caring about your partner’s wants and needs and always taking them into account before speaking or acting. The expectation is that your partner will follow the same guidelines.
12
The Grand Season family
November 2019
2. Loyalty
We feel happy when we know that someone has our backs. Relationships have the greatest success when each partner focuses on supporting one another at all times. This means that if someone is antagonizing your partner, you will either back your partner up directly or support him or her from behind the scenes.
3. Priority
If you want to build a stronger positive relationship, let your partner know that he or she is a priority. Commit time and energy to talking and addressing each other’s wants and needs. Be sure that the two of you have “quality time” alone to connect and enjoy each other’s company.
4. Pick Your Battles
Strong and happy couples know when to bring up issues and when to put them aside. If you can let something go, move on and still enjoy your partner…let it go! If you cannot move on, then bring it up. Never bring something upsetting up in bed, and never in earshot of children or other family or friends. www.grandseasonfamily.com

5. Loving Gestures
The concept that “actions speak louder than words” is an important one when it comes to relationships. It is not enough to simply feel that you love someone, you must also show that you love that person. Use kind words, be physically affectionate, leave little love notes around the house…whether it’s a verbal gesture or a material one, make sure to let your partner know that you love him or her.
6. Put in the Work
Partners in a successful relationship understand that you need to put in the work to keep things running smoothly. That means sometimes you need to do things that you do not want to do because it matters to your partner.
7. Focus on the Positives
Even the best of relationships have challenges and even the most wonderful of partners can have less-than-stellar moments. When times are tough, those who are seeking a happy relationship will combat the negative with a positive. Reverse your thinking to remind yourself that your mate has great qualities and that you are happy to be together. For Advertising Information Call (623) 594-1630

REFLECT
ENHANCE GRATITUDE
Ways to improve your wellbeing We have read over and over again in positive psychology research, from Martin Seligman to Shawn Achor: If there is a one-word answer to the secret of happiness, it is gratitude. Gratitude may just be the strongest tool in the kit when it comes to pulling ourselves and others out of a funk, or rebooting a terrible blue mood. Here are some simple exercises that can enhance your sense of gratitude all year round.
1. Savor
Slow down! Stop. Breathe. Take notice and delight in the present moment. Let yourself get excited about little things. Cultivate tiny moments of joy, and notice those times when they spontaneously happen.
2. Plan experiences
What can you plan this season that will make your holidays more memorable? Be purposeful about planning and creating special experiences, and you will reap the rewards. Is there a tradition you can renew? An activity you can plan with your family in town that will create a cherished memory? It could be as simple as taking a photo of extended family or tossing a football together in the backyard.
3. Play music
Listening to music can make us feel more alive. When you play music that resonates with you, it heightens your senses and gives you a greater feeling of awe and reverence for life. Create a playlist that you feel deeply connected to personally. Tune into it when you need a gratitude lift or a shift in perspective.

4. Write a letter to your younger self
6. Fall asleep to gratitude
Happiness researcher and author Shawn Achor suggests writing a letter to your younger self with the wisdom you have today. This simple act can transform your past (by showing yourself compassion) and can transform your present. Read your letter, and you will likely find advice you can still use today.
In a journal, write down what you feel thankful for each day. Capture specifics and small details. Make this the last activity you do before you fall asleep. Not only are you immersing yourself in all that brings you joy, you are putting your mind in a thankful and positive place before you drift off to sleep.
5. Make a highlights list
7. Make a resilience list
What are your standout experiences for each month of this year? Capture those in a simple list. You will experience more gratitude as you recall special experiences, trips and treasured memories. Sometimes time moves so fast, we miss the gratitude that comes from reminding ourselves of how fulfilling our lives already are.
Write down five tough times and how you made it through. We all need reminders that we are stronger than we think. When you know you can cope with what comes your way, you can put worry down and more fully live in the present moment.
8. Take the focus off you
Do something nice for someone else, that is totally unexpected. Leave a happy note for your waitress, pay it forward and buy that eggnog latte for the car behind you in line at Starbucks, or call someone you haven’t talked with in a while. Happy acts for other people give you a sense of contentment, too.
SQUISH & CRUNCH ARE NOT CARPET SOUNDS BUT SOFT IS!!! Hello my name is Paige O’Dowd and all my friends thought that I was crazy getting into such a male-dominated field but my answer to them was who knows clean better than a woman. GROWTH
COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS
The holidays are a reminder to take inventory of all the blessings we have in our lives. Making gratitude a habit can have positive benefits to your own happiness, as well as those around you, by creating stronger bonds in your relationships. During this season of celebration, try some of these ideas with your family:
Amazing grace
The dinner table is a great place to reflect and reinforce our feelings of gratitude. Before you eat, start at one end of the table and encourage every person to share something they are thankful for in their lives.
“Advocates for YOUR Home Improvement”
Focus on what you have
Write down three positive things you are grateful for every night before you go to bed. Research shows that gratitude journaling can put you in a dramatically better mood and even prolong that feeling for weeks and months the more you practice. To beat the negativity bias, gratitude opens up your brain to attract positivity like bees to honey.
The write stuff
Think of someone in your life who has made a significant positive impact and write a letter expressing how much that person means to you. If possible, meet
Connect with those you love as you give thanks this season. this person face-to-face and read the letter aloud. Notice the person’s reaction and savor those moments to recall in the future.
Teachable moments
Try a new experience with the family and look for teachable moments, such as volunteering at a food bank or handing out gifts at a children’s hospital. Sometimes, the best way to appreciate all of the good in our own world is to take a moment to bear witness to the situations of those who are suffering. Gratitude in the face of adversity can help us weather the storms, provide a greater perspective to the plight of others and strengthen social bonds.

TRADITIONS
Thanksgiving is a chance for families to gather together, to feast and to enjoy being with one another. But the day can also be a meaningful time to reflect on our blessings and remember those who have impacted our lives. Many families have special traditions they use to show gratitude to their friends, family and faith. The Grand Season Family asked readers to share a cherished tradition that has helped their family experience real gratitude amid the food and fellowship of the holiday.
SAVOR MEMORIES Remember those things that count
Breakfast Club
For our family, Thanksgiving Day begins early, with our family gathered around a card table in the living room to share a special, once-a-year breakfast. Between bites of poppy seed cake and sips of eggnog, we record the year’s blessings on notebook paper: landing a new job, reconnecting with old friends, finding a great sale on kids’ shoes, earning an “A” in Spanish. No item is too small for the list.

Tree of thanks
In my family, sentiments are usually kept to oneself, so I knew my siblings and their spouses wouldn’t be comfortable participating in traditions where vocal expressions of gratitude were required. So, I pulled out a craft project I had done with my kids. I made a tree from brown construction paper and taped it to the wall. Then I made leaves out of red, yellow and orange paper. I handed out the leaves to my family, asking them to write something they were thankful for on each leaf. I told them they didn’t need to put their name on the leaves. The kids were enthusiastic. The adults were reluctant at first, but once they read the leaves, they all wrote down at least one thankful thought. I was surprised to see some leaves with detailed, heartfelt lists, and a few relatives filled more than one leaf!
Tablecloth of Memories
One year, I brought a tablecloth and a package of fabric pens. I asked our family and guests to write something on the tablecloth they were thankful for. Everyone took turns writing short notes on the cloth, and we continue the tradition every year. When Thanksgiving Day arrives, our guests smile and laugh as they read through the memories, while the children search to find their handprints, thrilled to see how much they’ve grown.

KIDS
LIFE LESSON Teaching the art of appreciation
Work gratitude into conversation Gratitude is one of the trickiest concepts to teach toddlers and preschoolers—who are by nature selfcentered—but one of the most important. Sure, thankful children are more polite and pleasant to be around, but there’s more to it than that. By learning gratitude, they become sensitive to the feelings of others, developing empathy and other life skills along the way, says Barbara Lewis, author of What Do You Stand For? For Kids. Instilling grateful feelings now, will benefit your child later in life. A 2003 study, at the University of California at Davis, showed that grateful people report higher levels of happiness and optimism—along with lower levels of depression and stress. The catch? “No one is born grateful,” says life coach Mary Jane Ryan, author of Attitudes of Gratitude “Recognizing that someone has gone out of the way for you is not a natural behavior for children—it’s learned.” Children model their parents in every way, so make sure you use “please” and “thank you” when you talk to them. Insist on their using the words, too. Try these ideas to teach your children gratitude:
18
The Grand Season family
November 2019
Try to weave appreciation for mundane things into your everyday talk. When you reinforce an idea frequently, it’s more likely to stick.
Have kids help
It happens to all of us: You give your child a chore, but it’s too agonizing watching him a) take forever to clear the table or b) make a huge mess mixing the pancake batter. The temptation is always to step in and do it yourself. But the more you do for them, the less they appreciate your efforts.
Insist on thank-you notes
Kids of all ages can write thank you notes. Young children can draw pictures or use stickers on a notecard. Older children can write notes. Teaching your children how to write thank you notes will be a skill they use forever.
Practice saying “no”
Of course, kids ask for toys, video games, and candy—sometimes on an hourly basis. It’s difficult, if not impossible, to feel grateful when your every whim is granted. Saying “no” makes saying “yes” so much sweeter.
Be patient

TALK
BREAK THE SILENCE In an ideal world, we’d all have a list of funny conversation starters on deck for Thanksgiving dinner, so we’d be equipped to defuse any awkward family tensions or change the subject quickly, yet affably. At your holiday dinner table, you know it’s important to stay away from controversial topics like politics, but what do you do if you don’t want to revert to retelling old family stories over and over again?
Create connections this holiday.
Luckily for you, we have some playful and funny conversation starters perfect for Thanksgiving to get your family and friends bonding (rather than bickering or making passive-aggressive remarks) during the meal. We guarantee no one will want to escape the Thanksgiving table on November 28th with these conversation starter questions— and if all else fails, maybe just try a game of Cards Against Humanity? At least then all the awkwardness will be directed toward the game’s prompts rather than at each other.
Fun and Funny Conversation Starters for Parents to Ask Kids (Of All Ages) • Who is the funniest person at the table and why? • Pretend you just won $5 million. What’s the first thing you would buy? • What do you think is the hardest thing about being a parent? • What are you most thankful for this year? (You knew it was coming.)

LIFE HACKS Stumped on a project or presentation? Try ditching the computer and writing by hand. The experience has been proven to help creativity. If you lose something, take a picture of your room, put it on Facebook or Instagram, have your friends play “I Spy.” Stuffy nose? Leave a sliced onion near where you sleep and let it sit for the night. Your nose will be clear by the time you wake up.
MAKE AN IMPRESSION Simple advice for issues in life
As soon as you have a brain freeze, push your tongue against the roof of your mouth. It will relieve the pain instantly. If you buy unnecessary things that are on sale, you’re not saving money; you’re are still spending it. Put a sticker with a fake PIN number on your debit card. That way, if you lose it and someone tries to use it more than three times, the machine will eat the card.
Take advantage of power outages. It’s the best possible time to get a good look at the night sky. Storing batteries in the freezer can double their lifespan. Bake cookies in a muffin tin. They’ll stay soft and fluffy, and won’t spread out as they normally world. Try to spend more money on experiences and less on things. You’ll thank yourself later on in life.
The scent of a banana contains a compound that may actually help you lose weight.
Don’t let yourself be controlled by three things: people, money or past experiences.
You can “rewire” your brain to be happy by simply recalling three things you’re grateful for every day for 21 days.

HEALTH
BOOST YOUR MOOD Happiness can improve your health
If you want to beat the flu this season, a good mood may be your best ally. Being depressed or anxious has long been linked to a suppressed immune system, but recent research shows that a positive mood can have a positive effect on your health. A study by the University of Nottingham found that participants who were in a good mood when they got their flu shots were more protected from the virus than those who were in a neutral or bad mood. Even after taking into account all other variables, the predominant factor in the flu shots’ effectiveness came back to the positive moods. Those who were in a good mood, (even while being stabbed in the arm with a needle) showed a higher level of antibodies. This supports a growing body of evidence about how our emotions and the immune system work together. Although scientists are still trying to figure out just how the mental state triggers physical wellbeing or disease, the evidence is clear that it does. So, whether you’re getting a flu shot or just want to stay healthy this year—think of your happy place and make the most of each day. Also, try to:
Smile
Smiling triggers the brain to release feel-good neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and endorphins, sending messages to the rest of your body to help you relax while slowing your heart rate and lowering your blood pressure.
Be bored
Boredom is scientifically characterized as “an unengaged mind.” Research shows that boredom can be used as a sign to reboot our mind. It lets us know that we’re stuck on autopilot instead of using our natural curiosity to explore our environment. Instead of diverting your attention from boredom, practice mindfulness. Whether that means meditating or simply becoming aware of your surroundings and trying to experience them in a different way, boredom can be used to “check in” with yourself to find out what’s going on in your mind and with your body. Or, at the very least, use it to take a breath and be grateful for peace and quiet.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

FAMILY FUN
PLAY Make these crafts with your kids
Looking for a way to engage with your kids over the long holiday weekend? Try out some of these crafts.
Coloring-Book Tablecloth
By turning the Thanksgiving table into a giant art canvas, kids will stay entertained throughout dinner. Cans from the dinner preparations (cleaned and dried) make handy holders for crayons and colored pencils. How it’s done: Use kraft paper, art paper, or wrapping paper to cover the table; if needed, use several lengths, taping them to each other. Keep it in place with large binder clips or painter’s tape (test tape on the table’s underside to ensure it won’t damage the finish). With black marker, draw place settings and other shapes to invite coloring.
Nature Hike Wreath Craft
Looking for a way to spruce up the post-Thanksgiving dinner walk? Give each family member a plastic bag, then have everyone collect fallen leaves, bark, pinecones, twigs, and other nature finds as they walk. Back home, hand out wreath forms cut from cereal boxes (ours are 7 inches wide) and bottles of tacky glue for attaching the objects. Add leaf-shaped name tags cut from cardboard or card stock. For hanging, glue a large paper clip to the back of each wreath.
Turkey Egg Hunt
Dig last spring’s plastic Easter eggs out of the closet for this free Thanksgiving activity for kids. Stash fun stuff—like sweets, trinkets, or paper slips bearing jokes or funny observations about Grandpa’s ears—inside the eggs. While a grown-up hides the turkey eggs around the house, have each child decorate a gift bag with colorful tape and stamps and ink. Let the hunt begin. The kid who gathers the most gobbler bounty gets the first slice of pie.
Tail Feather Tag
To start, each player colors a clothespin with a marker, then uses glue dots to attach googly eyes, as well as a craft foam or felt beak. The decorated pin is clipped to the back of the player’s shirt. Once the referee says “Go!,” everyone tries to steal each other’s clothespins without losing his own. When a player’s clothespin is taken, he’s out. The last person with a turkey still attached wins the round.
Turkey Race
Have each player make a turkey from half of a plastic Easter egg, using glue dots to stick on a pom-pom head, googly eyes, felt nose and feathers. Set each turkey over a large marble. On a smooth floor, see who can roll her bird the farthest.
Wreath of Plenty Craft
Each note of gratitude pinned to this leafy wreath only improves its lush look. Set out blank leaves, pens, and straight pins and ask guests to add what they’re thankful for. To make the wreath: Wrap a 12-inch Styrofoam wreath form with strips of fabric, securing them with ball-head straight pins. Cut leaf shapes from card stock. Crease each leaf in half to add dimension. To hang, pin a loop of string to the back of the wreath. Tip: Use light-colored gel pens to write on darker paper.

Get the whole household involved
Why limit family members to such chores as washing and drying dishes? You can also put them to work on choosing menus, tasting foods and even cooking food.
Schedule a mock cooking class
If you want to get family members involved, make time on a weekend for a prepping and cooking session, where everyone can share knife skills, recipes and other culinary lessons.
Do a taste test
Let’s face it, every family has that one member who is just plain finicky. To combat that, have them weigh in for taste tests. This way, you can plan to cook that dish in bulk.
