EDITOR

NOTE

FROM THE EDITOR Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year! There’s something about the decorations, music and memories that make me smile. While many people dream of a white Christmas, I personally prefer the warming glow of a saguaro dressed up in holiday lights. For many, the next four weeks are easily the busiest time of the year that is celebrated with football, food, friends, family and faith. This Christmas, my hope is that you take some time to make some magical memories with those around you. Consider surprising your family with bubble bash—the giggles will make the effort worthwhile. (You can purchase a bubble machine, a colorful disco light and turn on

your favorite playlist to create the perfect environment to celebrate winter break.) I’d encourage you to make time to gather friends, family and neighbors around to spread a little joy to those less fortunate. Got a few last minute gifts to pick up? Take a look at our gift guide… and don’t forget to visit our local advertisers! From all of us at The Grand Season Famiy, we hope you and yours have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year! YOU

HOLIDAY BLUES Has the Grinch robbed you of joy?

This time of year it can be hard to be joyful if something is getting in the way? Conflict. Disappointment. Fear. Anger. These are emotions you have felt at one point or another in your relationships. In healthy relationships, issues that cause these emotions are merely stepping-stones to a more fulfilling relationship. But for others, these feelings can block the growth of a relationship. The difference in whether an issue will yield growth, or disease determines the ability of the person who has been hurt to forgive. While learning to forgive may not be easy, it is necessary.

If you feel the Grinch has stolen your joy this holiday season, it might be time to look at how you can use forgiveness to move forward. Forgiveness requires an apology Sure, we’d all like a heartfelt apology from the person who hurt us. Your job is to ask for an apology, if you are comfortable doing so—just understand that your ability to forgive is not dependent on anyone else’s words or actions.

10

The Grand Season family

Forgiveness is not a one-time event Particularly for deep-rooted injuries, meaningful forgiveness can take years to achieve. But we can always begin the process of forgiveness and deal with the resurgences of anger as they arise. Forgiveness doesn’t mean you have to like the person Forgiveness demonstrates your character it is not proof of another person’s. You don’t have to trust the person you forgive, or even like them.

December 2016

Forgiveness requires action Often, it is best to confront the person who hurt you. This allows you to articulate how the person’s words or actions hurt you, which may provide a psychological release. However, if you do not feel safe approaching the person, do not put yourself in a dangerous situation. Learning to forgive may be the single most important thing you can do to grow in your relationships. Understanding the importance of forgiveness can allow you to enjoy healthy relationships, without letting the inevitable hurt that comes from loving others destroy you. www.grandseasonfamily.com

KIDS

CAPTURE THE MAGIC Make time together matter

If you often find yourself wishing that everyone could just get along, that you could somehow tap into those moments of family harmony, but then the ebb and flow of life carries you along before you can do anything about it, take heart: You don’t need to wait for the next family vacation to recapture the magic. Try working these 5 ideas into your life, and make the most of your family’s time together.

1. Unplug, unplug, unplug

Yes, we all know we should do a little less staring into our phones, but recent studies show that the very sight of screens (even if switched off!) can result in more shallow interactions between people who are spending time together. Silence your phone and encourage everyone else to do the same.

2. Divide and conquer

If your kids are going through a rough patch of not getting along, experts suggest one parent taking one child out while the other stays home with the others—or splitting up on a family outing,

12

The Grand Season family

then coming back together for a meal—can give everyone a break from a dynamic that they might be stuck in. Similarly, parents should prioritize regular date nights where they can catch up with each other.

3. Maintain family routines Family rituals, like special weekend meals, movie or game nights, religious worship or even the smaller everyday ones like a regular family dinner, provide a predictable framework for being together that is comforting for everyone and that makes them feel happy at being a member of the group.

December 2016

4. Don’t get caught up in what everyone is doing wrong If you find yourself trapped in a loop of frustration at something one of your family members is doing, stop and remind yourself of a time recently when that person did something good.

5. Greet with a hug and part with a kiss

Hugging produces happy chemicals in the brain. Plus, who doesn’t want to start and end the day on a loving note? Doing so will increase your well-being and stimulate good feelings all around. www.grandseasonfamily.com

KIDS

CREATIVE CONVERSATIONS Questions that require real answers

Talking to your kids (depending on their personality and age) can be just a joy or a challenging chore. Instead of getting frustrated with one-word answers, start asking questions that require creative answers. TRY THESE ON FOR SIZE: What was your first thought when you woke up today?

IN SURPRISE

Describe your perfect day? If you could switch places with one friend for a day, who would it be? When is it hard being a friend? How can you change the world? If you could give everybody in the world one piece of advice, what would you say? If you could time travel, where would you go? What would you change? What are you most afraid of? What do you love about yourself? What’s something you know how to do that you could teach others? If you could eat only one food for an entire year, what would you choose?

CELEBRATE

HANUKKAH

THE HANUKKAH CELEBRATION revolves around the kindling of a nine-branched menorah, known in Hebrew as the hanukiah. On each of the holiday’s eight nights, another candle is added to the menorah after sundown; the ninth candle, called the shamash (“helper”), is used to light the others. Jews typically recite blessings during this ritual and display the menorah prominently in a window as a reminder to others of the miracle that inspired the holiday. In another allusion to the Hanukkah miracle, traditional Hanukkah foods are fried in oil.

14

The Grand Season family

December 2016

Potato pancakes (known as latkes) and jam-filled donuts (sufganiyot) are particularly popular in many Jewish households. Other Hanukkah customs include playing with four-sided spinning tops called dreidels and exchanging gifts. In recent decades, particularly in North America, Hanukkah has exploded into a major commercial phenomenon, largely because it falls near or overlaps with Christmas. From a religious perspective, however, it remains a relatively minor holiday that places no restrictions on working, attending school or other activities. www.grandseasonfamily.com

GIFTS

LAST MINUTE TIPS

By now you have probably spent more than a few hours looking at gifts online, and perhaps a day or so visiting the mall, Wal-Mart, Target and other shops trying to locate the perfect gift for those people you want to say thank you to, but don’t have a huge budget to draw from. Our team has created some simple gift ideas that you can use to give to you favorite golfer, teacher, neighbor, doctor, or other families in your neighborhood. With a little creativity you can create the perfect gift on a limited budget.

Chances are someone in your life is a golfer. Golfers are perhaps the easiest group to give gifts—a box of nice golf ball will make every golfer giddy. If you want to step it up, you can make a basket and include practice balls, tees, ball markers, and a golf glove. If you want to give more book a tee-time at your enthusiast’s favorite course.

For the movie lover, grab a holiday box and some tissue paper. You can wrap up candy, popcorn, sodas and a DVD for a family movie night. With a gift like this you can add your favorite movie snacks and include a gift card for the local movie theatre.

If you have several families in your neighborhood you’d like to give gifts to, but don’t want to buy for each child. Head to the store and check out some cool board games, or card games. Wrap them up in a bucket with a few snacks, and give your friends the gift of a family game night. If you want to put the gift over the top, include a gift card for pizza and drinks to be delivered to their home.

18

The Grand Season family

December 2016

Know of someone who needs to relax? Grab a basket and purchase bath products, lotions, candles and a refreshing eye mask to give the gift of relaxation. If you want to add more think about purchasing a cozy robe, or a gift card for a massage. www.grandseasonfamily.com

For those you’re still not sure what to get, you can always wrap up a nice bottle of wine with two wine glasses and wine charms for a simple gift, or you create an arrangement of gift cards in a vase for your loved one.

HEALTH

EAT RIGHT

Avoid excess baggage while traveling (BPT) No one wants to come home from vacation packing extra pounds in addition to great souvenirs and fond memories. Yet even the most dedicated, healthy eater can find it difficult to maintain good dietary habits while traveling. It is possible to stay on track while on the road, however, healthier dining doesn’t mean sacrificing flavor. Here are four tips to help you make better choices while savoring the fun of your trip:

Don’t delay dining

With so many things to see and do on your vacation, it’s easy to forget to eat. Extreme hunger is a recipe for binging and unhealthy choices. “After about three hours without food, blood sugar begins to fall,” says dietician Amy Jamieson-Petonic. “Once you’ve crossed the five-hour mark, your blood sugar begins to plummet, and you grab whatever you can to refuel.” Instead of letting your hunger reach crisis point, try to stick to your regular eating schedule. Pack some healthy snacks in your travel tote or handbag to tide you over in case you get hungry between meals.

Map out healthy meals

Just as you planned other aspects of your trip, it’s important to plan meals, too. Make a map of where and when you will eat to avoid unhealthy temptations. Resources like HealthyDiningFinder. com can help you locate restaurants that serve healthy and delicious fare, like My Fit Foods visit www.myfitfoods.com to learn more.

Avoid liquid calories

It’s fine to indulge, but avoid going overboard and look for lighter options. Cocktails can be loaded with calories! So can fresh fruit smoothies! Since those calories are in liquid form it’s easy to consume and not realize the impact until you step on the scale.

Walk, hike, bike, swim and jog it off

Maintaining your physical activity level can help keep you in the healthful mindset you need in order to make better food choices. Many fun things to do on vacation also involve beneficial exercise. Walking is one of the best ways to see and experience a new location, and it’s a great way to offset any extra calories you might consume on your trip.

MONEY

PAYING FOR COLLEGE Tips on how to make a plan

When it comes to planning for college, it can be easy to thumb through glossy brochures while ignoring one important reality: COST. The average tuition and fees at private four-year colleges and universities increased by 11 percent since 2010 according to the College Board. With this figure in mind, the experts at Wells Fargo are offering tips to help families make a financial plan for college:

Get a Ballpark Figure College costs can vary widely, depending on the institution. Will your student be attending a private or public college? Will you be paying in-state tuition? What about room and board? Check out a specific institution’s published college costs for an accurate number that takes into consideration different factors. Outside Funding Explore every avenue for supplementing college costs. All families should start by completing the FAFSA, which is a

free application for federal student aid, to determine your eligibility— Families should apply in October of a student’s senior year. Next, investigate merit-based scholarships. CELEBRATE

CHRISTMAS Try something old or new!

Traditions can be started at any given point, and can be used to help your family cultivate a deep bond, or can signal to new friends, that they are indeed a part of your family.

Consider using the following ideas to cultivate your family’s Christmas traditions:

Leave cookies and milk for Santa!

Stuff an extra stocking if it may be possible you’ll welcome an unexpected guest.

Attend the play, “A Christmas Carol.” Clean your closets and take unwanted items to a shelter. Gather a group of family and friends and sing Christmas songs to people living in retirement homes. Also bring freshly baked gifts for the attendees.

Create a hot chocolate bar with homemade mix, jars of marshmallows, sprinkles, candy canes, and other fun toppings.

Read “The Night Before Christmas” as a family.

Create or purchase an ornament. Look for ornaments that have an activity that stood out for each family member during the year.

FOOD

FRESH IS BEST Smart nutrition tips

(StatePoint) Nutrition is important for everyone, but especially for children, as it is directly linked to all aspects of their growth and development. Childhood obesity affects one in six children and adolescents in the United States. Though associated with elevated risks of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, bone and joint problems, and sleep apnea—among other health problems— childhood obesity can usually be prevented.

“Families should focus on the importance of healthful eating and active lifestyles,” says Kristi King, registered dietitian nutritionist. “Parents can inspire kids to eat healthfully by getting them involved in shopping and preparing your family’s meals.” Before You Head to the Store Create a shopping list together, so kids feel like they are part of the decision making process. “Include food items from each of the ‘MyPlate’ food groups from the USDA, which include fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy,” says King. At the Store Once you get to the store, shop together and encourage children to pick a few new foods they would like to try. “Talk about foods’ colors, shapes,

26

flavors and textures as you shop,” says King. “ Back at Home When you return home, involve children in putting groceries away—especially foods that require refrigeration or freezing. Refrigerate perishable food items promptly and properly. “Explain to your kids the importance of refrigerating perishable foods within two hours,” King says. “And remember, the clock starts when you pull an item from the refrigerated case at the store, so head straight home after your shopping trip if you have perishables in the car.” For more healthful eating tips, recipes, videos and more, visit KidsEatRight.org. www.grandseasonfamily.com

LOVE

THE GREATEST GIFT Give your partner a gift that will last forever

It’s that time of the season when the pressure is on to buy the perfect gift for your better half. If you’re like many couples, you probably have bought yourself a gift, and handed it to your spouse to wrap for Christmas. This year, rather than wrapping up something to collect dust, consider learning to speak a new language—you’re partner’s love language.

Dr. Gary Chapman, best-selling author, counselor and speaker, realized his clients were trying all the “right” ways to show their partner love—but they were speaking the wrong language. The 5 Love Languages theorizes people tend to give love in the way they prefer to receive love. Since we don’t all have the same preferences as our partners when it comes to giving and receiving love, this is how relationships can start to get sticky. But by understanding our partners’ inherent love language, we can express our love to our partners more effectively—visit 5lovelangueages.com to learn more.

Quality time

This language is about giving the other person your undivided attention. Distractions, postponed dates, or the failure to listen can be especially hurtful to these individuals. Being there for them is crucial.

Words of affirmation

This language uses words to affirm other people. For those who prefer the words of affirmation language, hearing “I love you” and other compliments are what they value the most. Words hold real value within this language.

Receiving gifts

Ad Deco d a rat Fixt u ive re!

Dr. Chapman says for some people, what makes them feel most loved is to receive a tangible gift. This doesn’t necessarily mean the person is materialistic, but a meaningful or thoughtful present is what makes them feel appreciated.

Acts of service

For these people, actions speak louder than words— lending a helping hand shows you really care. People who thrive on this language have very little tolerance for people who make more work for them.

Physical touch

To this person, nothing speaks more deeply than appropriate touch. That doesn’t mean only in the bedroom—everyday physical connections, like handholding, kissing, or any type of re-affirming physical contact is greatly appreciated. According to Chapman, even though we tend to favor one language more than the others, we still enjoy traits of the others as well.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

BOX OFFICE

OPENING SOON Hollywood unwraps movies for everyone!

A Monster Calls

SING

La La Land

A Monster Calls is a visually spectacular drama about a young boy who attempts to deal with his mother’s illness and the bullying of his classmates by escaping into a fantastical world of monsters and fairy tales that deal with courage, loss and faith.

Following the release of The Secret Life of Pets in summer 2016, Illumination presents Sing at the holidays. Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, Taron Egerton and Tori Kelly star in a musical comedy about finding the shining star that lives inside all of us.

In this modern take on the Hollywood musical from Damien Chazelle, Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and Mia (Emma Stone) are drawn together by their common desire to do what they love. But as success mounts they are faced with decisions that begin to fray the fragile fabric of their love affair, and the dreams they worked so hard to maintain in each other threaten to rip them apart.

PG

EDITOR’S PICK Disney rolled out a blue carpet, and brought Hawaii to life on Hollywood Blvd. to introduce its newest animated feature Moana to the world. I received an invitation to attend this unbelievable startstudded event at the famous El Capitan theatre. The opening wouldn’t be complete without “The Rock,” singing for the crowd, as well as Hula dancers and fire-eaters providing pre-show entertainment. If you haven’t taken the family to see this movie yet, make sure you see it before it leaves the big screen.

MOANA PG

In the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania, Moana, a born navigator, sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her incredible journey, she teams up with her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui, to traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore. www.grandseasonfamily.com

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

PG-13 Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe. It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know.
