Over the past decade, we have learned how our brains are hardwired for emotional contagion. Emotions spread via a wireless network of mirror neurons, which are tiny parts of the brain that allow us to empathize with others and understand what they’re feeling. Your brain picks up the smiles, yawns and fatigue response of someone sitting on the other side of the room. But it’s not just smiles and yawns that spread. We can pick up negativity, stress, and uncertainty like secondhand smoke. Observing someone who is stressed—especially a family member—can have an immediate effect upon our own nervous systems. Secondhand stress is much more contagious from a romantic partner than a stranger, but when observers watched a stressful event on video with strangers, 24% still showed a stress response. According to Heidi Hanna, “Most people have experienced spending time with someone who triggers a stress response just by walking in the door. This can be a conditioned response from previous interactions” The cues that cause secondhand stress can be very subtle changes in the people around us—yet they can have huge impacts. In fact, you don’t have to see or hear someone to pick up their stress; you can also smell them. Research shows that stress causes people to sweat special stress hormones, which are picked up by the olfactory senses of others. In such a highly connected world, we need to find ways to improve our emotional immune system, otherwise we risk the negative effects of second-hand stress. Here’s how:
Be Calm and Carry On
We found that if you create a positive mindset about stress and stop fighting it, you experience a 23% drop in the negative effects of stress. When we see stress as a threat, our bodies and minds miss out on the enhancing effects of stress.
Smile More
Instead of returning a stressed nonverbals with an equally stressed grimace of your own, return it with a smile or a nod of understanding. Suddenly you have the power.
Be Confident
One of the greatest buffers against picking up others’ stress is stable and strong self-esteem. The higher your self-esteem, the more likely you will feel that you can deal with whatever situation you face. Exercise is one of the best ways to build selfesteem, because your brain records a victory every time you exercise. Nowadays, we avoid smoking lounges and we wash our hands, but in the future, we may realize the key to health and happiness is improving our emotional immune system to protect ourselves from others’ stress. And of course, it’s not just other people’s stress that matters — our own mindset affects the happiness of those around us. APPLE PIE MOONSHINE MUDSLIDE
INGREDIENTS Chocolate syrup, for glass 4 oz. vodka 2 oz. Kahlua 2 oz. Baileys 1/4 c. heavy cream Ice Chocolate shavings, for garnish DIRECTIONS Add chocolate syrup to inside of two cocktail glass. Add vodka, Kahlua, Baileys, and heavy cream to a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice and shake until well chilled. Strain into glasses and garnish with chocolate shavings.
INGREDIENTS 4 c. apple juice 4 c. apple cider 3/4 c. granulated sugar 1/4 c. packed brown sugar 2 cinnamon sticks 1/2 tsp. ground ginger 1/2 tsp. allspice 3/4 c. 190 proof grain alcohol 3/4 c. vodka DIRECTIONS In a large pot over medium-high heat, combine apple juice, cider, sugars, cinnamon sticks, and spices. Bring to a simmer, then cover pot with lid and reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer for 1 hour then remove from heat and let cool. Remove cinnamon sticks and stir in grain alcohol and vodka. Transfer to jars or bottles. Shake well before serving.
Boozy S’mores Milkshake
INGREDIENTS 8 large scoops (about 2 1/2 c.) chocolate ice cream 1/4 c. Baileys 2 oz. vanilla vodka 1/2 c. marshmallow fluff Crushed graham crackers, for rimming Marshmallow bits, for rimming Chocolate fudge, for rimming Whipped cream, for garnish Chocolate squares, for garnish Graham cracker squares, for garnish DIRECTIONS In a blender, blend together ice cream, Baileys, vanilla vodka, and marshmallow fluff. Combine crushed graham crackers and marshmallow bits on a small plate. Rim 2 glasses with chocolate fudge and dip into graham crackers and marshmallows. Pour milkshake into glasses and top each shake with whipped cream, a chocolate square, and a graham cracker square.

INGREDIENTS 5 1/2 c. Rumchata 1/2 c. Fireball 1/4 c. vanilla icing, for rim 1/2 c. crushed Cinnamon Toast Crunch, plus more for garnish Whipped cream, for garnish DIRECTIONS In a large glass, combine Rumchata and Fireball. Stir to combine and set aside. Using a butter knife, spread icing onto rim of each glass. Press cereal crumbs onto all edges of the glass. Add ice to glass, then pour Rumchata mixture over ice.
