EDITOR

NOTE

FROM THE EDITOR Love is in the air, and so is the sun. I must admit, I’ve enjoyed the warming trend over the last couple of weeks. February is a busy month filled with Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, and the return of MLB Spring Training across the Valley. In honor of the month of love, we have dedicated this issue to sharing ideas on how to show your love to those you love the most. The magazine is packed with great ideas to spoil your partner, your kids and those closest to you. We’ve included some great tips on how to make life a little easier, and even

exposed some medical myths that may be weighing you down. In the midst of making plans for Valentine’s Day for those special someones in your life, don’t forget to make time for yourself. You’ll need it to prepare for the barrage of company that may be heading your way next month! I hope you have an incredible month and enjoy every possible opportunity to spend quality time with your friends and family. Melissa Cox Melissa@thegrandseason.com Editorial Director

CAPTIVATED Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend. —Martin Luther King, Jr.

Friends show their love in times of trouble, not in happiness. —Euripides Love is friendship that has caught fire. It is quiet understanding, mutual confidence, sharing and forgiving. It is loyalty through good and bad times. It settles for less than perfection and makes allowances for human weaknesses. —Ann Landers Nobody can predict the future. You just have to give your all to the relationship you’re in and do your best to take care of your partner, communicate and give them every last drop of love you have. I think one of the most important things in a relationship is caring for your significant other through good times and bad. —Nick Cannon If you love someone, set them free. LOVE CARRIES US THROUGH LIFE.

As children, we couldn’t tell our parents or grandparents we loved them enough. As the teen years approached, so did that crazy emotion of “puppy love.” Then as we matured, we experienced our first love which most likely taught us many incredible things and perhaps led to heartbreak. Then the love of your life swept you off your feet, and you said, “I do!” Perhaps you’ve experienced a love you can’t explain as you raise your children. Love can be experienced in a variety of ways. This month try some of the following ideas to share your love with those in your life!

Watch “When Harry Met Sally.” 8

Write love notes to your significant other, and leave them in odd places, like their shoes, on the dashboard of their car or on top of their computer. Don’t forget to say, “I love you,” to those you love.

YOU

BOUNCE BACK 5 traits of resilient parents

Being a parent takes patience, grit and an endless reservoir of love and affection. It also takes resilience—that partly innate (mostly learned) ability to bounce back from life’s little spills and giant collapses so that you can move forward with a sense of peace and happiness. Here is a look at five common traits resilient parents share that help them navigate the glorious minefield of parenting.

10

The Grand Season family

February 2017

1. Flexibility Bend before you break, and adjust with flexibility. One thing you probably know is that while some things are in your control, often children and their feelings and behaviors can turn a situation upside down. A resilient parent learns to roll with the punches. 2. Self-care It is important for all parents to learn that taking care of yourself is as important as taking care of others. If you are not well rested, fed and emotionally healthy, it is much harder to meet someone else’s needs. You cannot help your child in an emergency if you are not functioning. Life is the same way. www.grandseasonfamily.com

3. Acceptance of imperfections No one is perfect. Resilient parents learn to accept the fact that we all make mistakes and have plenty of imperfections. Perhaps your child is forgetful or loses things. A resilient parent realizes that this just might be the nature of the child and invests extra time and energy in teaching them organizational skills instead of getting frustrated or angry. 4. A positive outlook In life there will be good days, rotten days and everything in between. A resilient parent learns to focus on things that go well, rather than on the disasters. When you are running late, your child is having a temper tantrum and knocks over a glass of juice—it’s frustrating, but remind yourself about the good times. 5. A growth mentality As a parent, it’s easy to get stuck in a routine. While there is nothing wrong with routines, sometimes a person can become resentful without some fun or novelty added to the mix. A resilient parent realizes it is necessary to continue to grow and learn new skills. Taking a class, starting a new hobby—these are ways to continue learning and finding joy in your daily life!

KIDS

JUST SAY IT! How to really love your child

“Consciously refusing to make eye contact with a child is usually more painful than any other punishment. It can be devastating. It can be one of those incidents that a child will never forget.”

Saying, “I love you,” multiple times a day to your child is probably something you do. But, do you ever feel your kids might not be hearing your words—or may not believe you? Most parents need to know the emotional needs of their children, and need to develop skills to meet those needs. Want to increase your skill set? Take a look at some of the concepts bestselling author Ross Campbell shares in his book, How to Really Love Your Child.

Unconditional love is the foundation of healthy parentchild relationships. Every child wants to know, “Do you love me?” However, a child asks this emotional question mostly through behavior— it is rarely communicated verbally.

“A girl’s need for physical contact (especially the more affectionate type) increases in importance as she becomes older and reaches a zenith at around the age of eleven.”

“Without a foundation of unconditional love, parenting becomes a confusing and frustrating burden. What is unconditional love? Unconditional love is loving a child no matter what. No matter what the child’s assets, liabilities, handicaps. No matter what we expect the child to be. And most difficult, regardless of how the child acts.” 12

The Grand Season family

February 2017

Every child has an “emotional tank” that can only be filled by love. Only if the emotional tank is full can a child be expected to be at his best and do his best.

Parents convey love to children in four ways: eye contact, physical contact, focused attention and loving discipline.

The most important relationship in the family is the marital relationship. Both the quality of the parent-child bond and the child’s security depend on the quality of the marital bond.

TEENS

SPACE NEEDED Growing up is hard to do

Raising a teenager is difficult for the best of parents, just as being a teenager is difficult for all teens, regardless of how easy their childhood was. These are the years that parenting needs to be done delicately. Watching your teen distance him or herself from you can be hurtful and confusing, however, understanding their need for distance is a necessary part of growing up. Once children are born, they get progressively more distant from their parents, growing their independence so that they can become their own people. Teenagers are the height of testing out their freedom. Teens need space to discover themselves as separate beings from their families. It’s valuable growing space that needs to be respected. Though it’s hard to leave your teenager alone, especially as their behavior becomes more and more concerning, it’s important to create boundaries—for both you and them. This can be as formal or informal

14

The Grand Season family

February 2017

as you feel necessary. Make sure your teen is aware that you will respect these boundaries. Allow your teen to have a voice in creating the boundaries they would like to see in place. This discussion will provide you with insight into what your teen is thinking, feeling and needing. This is not the time to close up shop and not be involved with your teen. During this phase it can be tempting to just give up—but resist the temptation. Your teen, more than ever, needs to know that you love them and are there for them. Everyone needs space, but this is especially true for teenagers. As they’re slowly separating themselves from their family identity, they need room to discover themselves. Boundaries are important for giving teenagers their privacy, but also important for safety and consistency. Let your teen know that they will have a little more space to themselves, but the space is not a license to create chaos. www.grandseasonfamily.com

MONEY

GOOD HABITS Teach kids the value of money

Money is an essential part of life, and it’s never too early to teach your children its value and the importance of saving, so they will be equipped to spend sensibly when they grow up. Learning the principles of responsible handling of money should give them many opportunities for advancement when they are older, which is why it is important that, even at a young age, children cultivate a respect for money. 1. Expand on the basics of math Once your children start school and learn the basics of math, begin to educate them about money and give them some practice. Play money games at home or download them to your computer or tablet. This way, your child will learn how cash is actually used. 2. Get them a piggy bank This simple action will teach your children the importance of saving, and engender a sense of responsibility towards handling money. Encourage your children to save a certain amount in a particular time frame, or suggest they save coins of a particular denomination. Make it a game, as well as an aim, to keep it interesting. 3. Familiarize them with the bank Take your kids to the bank and open savings accounts in their names. Let them talk to the teller and conduct their business themselves. Make sure they understand the terms and conditions of the account, and suggest they commit to depositing regular amounts on a weekly or monthly basis. For more convenient banking, ask if the accounts can be serviced online. Having their own bank account will give your children a feeling of achievement. This is a great motivator to save more! 4. Encourage them to plan how to spend their savings Planning for future spending motivates your children to achieve their savings goals. It reminds them that with enough money, they can buy whatever they want. Allow them to dream big and encourage them to save more so they can achieve their goals more quickly. 5. Let them do their own shopping Give your children their own allowances when you go shopping. Then you can observe their attitudes towards spending money. If your kids want to spend more than their allowance, advise them to be more frugal and more

18

The Grand Season family

February 2017

patient. Educate them on sensible spending and explain the priorities when shopping. 6. Pay in cash Credit cards are a great temptation to spend money you don’t have. They’re also an easy way to get into financial trouble if you’re not disciplined and careful. Show your kids that the best way to buy things is with the money in their pockets. Handing over cash is the best way to learn how to use money responsibly. www.grandseasonfamily.com

LOVE

SOMETHING NEW Shake up your date night

VISIT THE FAIR A county or state fair can provide something out of the ordinary to do on a date. Besides the rides and carnival games, most fairs also offer free concerts and other entertainment. You could explore your love of animals in the livestock arena and petting barn or take a look at some local artwork. And don’t forget, you can’t go to the fair without sampling some of the food! Have some of your old favorites— corn dogs, turkey legs, cotton candy and funnel cakes—or try something new, like fried mashed potatoes on a stick, apple fries or chocolate covered cheesecake. TRASH OR TREASURE? You’ve probably heard the old adage, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Why not see if this idea rings true for the two of you? Visit some yard or estate sales or go to a flea market, thrift store or antique shop together. Have fun finding unusual items or things that bring back special memories for you. While you’re there, have a contest to see who can find the most ugly or unusual item. You may even want to purchase your finds as a gift for each other and a fun memento of your date.

HEALTH

MYTH BUSTERS

Not everything you hear is the truth MYTH: Eating ice cream will make your cold worse. If you’re home sick with a cold, you can totally go ahead and comfort yourself with some ice cream. The idea that dairy increases mucous production is fortunately not true, according to researchers at the Mayo Clinic. They reported, “In fact, frozen dairy products can soothe a sore throat and provide calories when you otherwise may not eat.” MYTH: Eating chocolate gives you acne. For one month, scientists fed dozens of people candy bars containing 10 times the usual amount of chocolate and dozens of others fake chocolate bars. When they counted the zits before and after each diet, there was “no difference” between the two groups. Neither the chocolate nor the fat seemed to have any effect on acne.

MYTH: Coffee stunts your growth. Most research finds no correlation between caffeine consumption and bone growth in kids. In adults, researchers have seen that increased caffeine consumption can limit calcium absorption very slightly, but the impact is so small that a tablespoon of milk will more than adequately offset the effects of a cup of coffee.

MYTH: It takes 7 years for gum to digest if you swallow it. Gum is mostly indigestible, but the occasional swallowed piece will pass through your intestines and exit the other side, just like anything else you eat that your body doesn’t need and can’t digest. The only cases where swallowed gum has caused a problem is when that gum was swallowed along with other things that shouldn’t be in your stomach. MYTH: Eating food within 5 seconds of dropping it on the floor is safe. Don’t you hate it when something you really wanted to eat falls on the floor? If you grab it within five seconds, however, it’s okay, right? Wrong! The five-second rule isn’t a real thing. The truth is that bacteria can contaminate food within milliseconds of contact.

This is an incredibly successful bit of advertising that has wormed its way into our brains and policies to make milk seem magical. The U.S. Department of Agriculture tells us that adults should drink three cups of milk a day, mostly for calcium and vitamin D. Multiple studies show, however, that there isn’t an association between drinking more milk (or taking calcium and vitamin D supplements) and having fewer bone fractures.

Healthy tips for dining out

Whether you’re traveling, celebrating a special occasion or simply spending quality time together, families across the country enjoy going to restaurants and dining out together. As consumers grow more sophisticated in their tastes and diets, restaurateurs are re-engineering their menus to accommodate their evolving preferences. More than ever before, restaurants are offering a wider array of healthful, delicious and great-tasting options that appeal to taste buds of all ages.

26

February 2017

Even though there are more nutritious choices available for children, it can sometimes be confusing for parents to decipher the better options from the more indulgent ones. Healthy Dining founder Anita Jones-Mueller has provided the following five tips to help parents identify more healthful kids’ meals: 1. Seek out high-quality ingredients: Look for options that are made with unprocessed ingredients and have a flavor profile kids will love. There are lots of familiar foods prepared in unique ways that parents and children can try. Give salmon kabobs or grilled chicken strips a shot next time you see them. www.grandseasonfamily.com

2. Opt for fresh veggies and fruit: When a meal includes fresh produce, kids not only get more nutrients, but also enjoy a rainbow of tantalizing colors. Look for kids’ meals that include salads, “dippable” sliced fruit or steamed vegetables. Fresh ingredients provide different textures that will keep young diners interested in their food. 3. Go for creativity: Kids have sophisticated palates so give them the opportunity to try new things. Look for menus featuring creative kids’ meals. From bento boxes and kid-friendly sushi to turkey sliders and creative noodle bowls, chefs are thinking beyond the traditional to create fun and memorable menu items. 4. Look for lean proteins and whole grains: To ensure that kids feel full and satisfied after eating, choose dining options made with lean proteins and whole grains. They’re two important components of a well-rounded diet. 5. Use a trusted resource: The National Restaurant Association’s Kids LiveWell program showcases restaurants that meet strict nutritional criteria for children’s foods. You can find Kids LiveWell restaurants at healthydiningfinder.com or download the app to put healthy dining options at your fingertips.

GROWTH

VISUALIZE SUCCESS 6 ways to set yourself apart

More than half a million new businesses emerge onto the scene over the course of each month, according to Forbes Entrepreneurs. But even more businesses shut down than start up. Whether you’re a new business owner or an employee looking to take your career to the next level, it’s definitely a competitive environment. How can you differentiate yourself from the millions of others? “Developing a purpose and setting goals to accomplish that purpose is the key to success,” says Per Wickstrom, founder of Best Drug Rehabilitation. “As an individual, you have a unique and fresh perspective, so it’s important to let that shine through.”

Wickstrom offers his proven tips for setting yourself apart from the rest to reach your business and career goals: Give back to the community Never underestimate the power of giving back to your surrounding community. The local community is what helps your business grow, and giving back is immensely rewarding and valuable. Tell your unique story All successful people have role models from which they draw inspiration and knowledge, but it’s important to continue to develop your own individual style and viewpoint. Don’t be afraid to be your dynamic and complex self. Continue to learn Commit to learning something new each and every day. To be innovative you need to stay on top of the trends and news in your industry. Keeping an open mind while being flexible and adaptable is a sure way to find success.

Learn from your mistakes Of course you’ll never make it to the top without learning from your many mistakes along the way. There are very few “overnight successes” in the world, and it’s likely you’ll spend years working towards your greatest accomplishments. When you experience a setback, don’t let it overwhelm your rational thinking. Instead, let it fuel your motivation on the road to achieving your goals. Focus on your passion Most successful entrepreneurs are not driven by money. Instead, they focus on their passion and spend time working on a vision that pulls them forward. When you visualize your success, it means you believe what you want is more than possible. For more insight into Per Wickstrom’s success visit perwickstom.com.

HEALTH

HOW’S YOUR HEART? Learn your ABC’s

Back in 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson declared the first American Heart Month. Since then, the month of February has been associated with cardiovascular health. And rightly so, because cardiovascular disease is the nation’s No. 1 killer of both men and women. Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association’s national movement to end heart disease and stroke in women. Every 80 seconds, one woman is killed by heart disease and stroke. That’s 1 in 3 deaths among women each year. You can reduce your risk if you know your ABCS of heart health:

• Aspirin—Ask your health care provider if taking it would be right for you. • Blood Pressure—Work with your health care team to find out if you have high blood pressure. If so, take steps to reduce it. • Cholesterol—A simple blood test is the only way to find out if you have high cholesterol. Seek your doctor’s help to learn how you can prevent high cholesterol or to reduce your levels, if needed. • Smoking—Just don’t do it. If you’re already a smoker, quit as soon as possible. You can get help at 1-800-QUITNOW or www.Smokefree.gov. To learn more, visit www.goredforwomen.org

TRAVEL

NOT TO MISS 5 U.S. historic sites to visit

Yellowstone National Park As you plan for your next vacation, consider touring these historic sites that travel experts say are “must sees.” If you want to take a trip to the East Coast you can plan a day at Gettysburg National Military Park, Colonial Williamsburg or Thomas Jefferson’s Library. If you’re looking for a taste of the Rocky Mountain region you can visit Yellowstone National Park or Lewis and Clark’s Missouri River Route. Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming, Montana and Idaho) Yellowstone was America’s first national park, so in addition to being beautiful, it paved the way for land conservation. If you go, you’ll see bison roaming freely, prismatic springs that paint rainbows and

32

The Grand Season family

geysers. Make sure to book your hotel reservations a year in advance so you can have your choice of where you’d like to stay. Thomas Jefferson’s Library (Washington, D.C.) Jefferson’s personal collection —6,487 books that he called “unquestionably the choicest” in the United States—formed the Library of Congress. Many were destroyed in a fire, but about 2,000 remain and are on exhibit. A trip to Washington is a great place to visit for a family with kids of all ages and stages. If you book tickets early, you can take a tour of the Capitol! Washington, D.C. is the perfect place to explore

February 2017

on foot. Additionally, it hosts the National Zoo, the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, The National Art Gallery and many more amazing attractions. If you take your time, this can be the trip of a lifetime.

Thomas Jefferson’s Library

www.grandseasonfamily.com

Gettysburg National Military Park (Pennsylvania) Most historians agree the battle of Gettysburg was the turning point in the Civil War; it saw more casualties than any battle in American history. You can explore the battlefields alone, with a guide or on horseback. If you go, make sure to see the national cemetery where the Union dead are buried and where Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. Colonial Williamsburg (Virginia) It’s so close to Busch Gardens and Water Country USA that families think it’s another theme park, but this is definitely not a theme park and most certainly worth your time. The reconstruction of the town started in the 1920s and is ongoing. The Colonial-attired docents are very well trained and their attention to every detail makes this a historical site you don’t want to miss. Lewis and Clark’s Missouri River Route (Montana) If you want to spend time alone in nature, taking a canoe trip down this route will take you back to understanding the power of America. You’re guaranteed not to see a ton of people or road traffic.

HOME

FEEL SAFE?

Health hazards not to ignore

Your home should be the place you feel the safest. But there could be elements in your home that are harmful to your health. While your home isn’t toxic, these four elements have the potential to cause adverse health effects.

HARMFUL SUBSTANCES

RADON Why it’s bad for you: Radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers. What to do: Get your home tested for radon and, if high, have it remediated.

MOLD Why it’s bad for you: Exposure can cause nasal congestion, eye and skin irritation, and wheezing. What to do: Clean spills promptly and run exhaust fans when bathing.

LEAD Why it’s bad for you: When exposed to lead from paint or the dust created by deteriorating paint, children can have lowered IQs, behavior disorders and hearing impairment. What to do: Have lead-based paint removed by a licensed professional. Dust often and don’t allow children to play in contaminated soil.

COMBUSTION GASES Why it’s bad for you: Depending on saturation, exposure can cause headaches, carbon monoxide poisoning or even death. What to do: Ensure all gas-burning appliances are properly ventilated. And don’t go overboard on weatherizing your home. An air-tight home won’t allow gases to escape.

FUN

CREATE CONNECTIONS Maximize family time

Today’s modern family juggles a multitude of obligations that keep schedules incredibly busy during the year. Here are 3 surprisingly simple ideas to help carve out more time for bonding and creating lasting memories with your family.

READ

When your kids are little, the day often ends with a storybook. When children grow, don’t let their love of reading dwindle.

Read a chapter from a longer book with your elementary-aged child. For older kids, select a book or series and start a multi-generational book club. Discuss your pick weekly with extended family over skype or FaceTime.

REMINISCE

Dig out old family videos and photo albums and go through them with your children.

You’ll enjoy taking a trip down memory lane, and your family will enjoy poking fun at your questionable fashion choices of the past.

WALK Taking walks with your family is great exercise and an easy way to catch up on life’s happenings. Make it an evening ritual. Explore your neighborhood or select new parks in the area within a short distance. February 2017 38 The Grand Season family

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director
