EDITOR
NOTE
FROM THE EDITOR Take me out to the ballgame—or not. It’s that incredible time of the year when the Valley of the Sun doubles in population and buying a ticket to anywhere outside of Arizona is now particularly pricey. While Cactus League visitors will dominate our roads, restaurants and casinos, we know there is much more to do in the Valley of the Sun than just hit as many ballgames as life allows. Our theme for this month is Adventure. If you have schoolaged kids who are anything like my boys, they’re probably itching for Spring Break. While your crew might love to hit some theme parks near or far, don’t forget we have an
incredible playground of adventure to experience right here in our backyard. Get your family moving by hiking the local trails, or hop in the car and conquer the drive to visit the majestic views of Antelope Canyon. I hope you and yours have a great month, and perhaps we’ll run into each other at the ballpark while we all enjoy our fair share of peanuts, popcorn and cracker jacks. Play ball! YOU
RISE & SHINE Tips to prepare for your day
Are most of your mornings spent running out the door with breakfast in hand and applying your makeup on the go? It’s easy to snooze, and rush all the way to work—but building a routine that gives you a calm and efficient morning can make you feel more prepared to take on your day. If you haven’t nailed it yet, don’t fret. Try this routine on for size: 1. Rise and shine. Do you hit the snooze button one too many times? Avoid being late again. Place your alarm out of reach so that in order to turn it off you have to get out of bed. If you use your phone to wake up, consider setting your alarm tone to a song that annoys you—you’ll be happy to get out of bed to make it stop!
2. Perk up. Get yourself moving with a morning ritual that activates your mind. Enjoy your cup of coffee or green tea alongside a brain teaser, Sudoku or crossword puzzle. Or spend the time writing a journal entry, scanning the morning headlines or reading a chapter of a book. Taking a few moments to warm up the mind can encourage greater productivity all day long. 3. Eliminate bed head. You can shave substantial minutes off your morning routine by doing your hair the night before. After washing and conditioning your locks, leave hair up in buns or clips while sleeping. In the morning, undo the up-do and use a little spray before heading out the door.
You may not have time for a full workout in the morning, but moving a bit upon getting out of bed can get the blood flowing, help wake you up and give you a metabolism boost.

4. Makeup magic. When there’s no time for a full morning makeover, stick to the basics. Start with a moisturizer with SPF so you can protect your skin and keep it hydrated. Use under eye concealer to easily eliminate any signs of fatigue. If you do need to abbreviate the full eye makeup routine, don’t omit a quick coat of mascara, which can help you look widereyed and more awake with a few seconds of effort. Lastly, give lips shine and protect them from chapping with a lip balm that preferably contains SPF.

KIDS
COMMUNICATION GAPS Do you sound like a broken record?
As parents, our ultimate goal is to raise independent, healthy adults. Sometimes that goal seems impossible to accomplish, especially when you’re teaching your kid how to do things for themselves (like make their bed, wash laundry, pack lunch, help with the dishes). All of the tasks we are trying to teach our kids often require multiple steps and a specific sequence. Since the young brain is under construction, your child may only hear one or two of your directions, and then forget the rest. As I’ve been transitioning my boys toward independence, I have found a pattern that seems to work for a short time—and then I
12
The Grand Season family
need to repeat the pattern to help them stay on track. Here are the steps I take: 1. Show them: I have my boys watch me do the task. 2. Do the task together: Then I have them do the task with my guidance. 3. Allow them to do task alone: At this stage they usually forget an important step, but instead of getting frustrated, I walk them through the process again, because I know repetition is the best teacher. 4. Create reminders with the steps for the tasks they’re responsible to complete.
March 2017
www.grandseasonfamily.com
I have found placing cheat sheets around the house helps my kids with their confidence because they don’t have to memorize every step. As my kids have grown up, I have made their cheat sheets into decorations for various rooms, using chalk boards, picture frames, and white erase boards. These guides have helped me replace my broken record syndrome with an attitude of willingness to help my kids rather than just telling them what to do. I have found my kids are much more responsive when I dig around in the dirt with them.

TEENS
UNDER CONSTRUCTION The brain is still a work in progress
Until scientists began to employ MRI imaging, the teenage brain was thought to be largely finished. Many assumed it only required fine-tuning in preparation for adulthood. “Now we’re finding out how wrong we were,” says Richard Restak. “The teenage brain is a work in progress that we’re only beginning to understand.” What parents once blamed on hormones is actually “a grand upheaval of the brain.” This upheaval affects everything from schoolwork and sleep patterns to teens’ propensity for taking risks. Risk-taking: Blame immature frontal lobes Dr. Ron Dahl says a desire for thrills and taking risks is a building block of adolescence. The frontal lobes help put the brakes on such behavior, but they’re also one of the last areas of the brain to develop fully. In calm situations, teenagers can rationalize almost as well as adults. But stress can hijack what Dahl calls “hot cognition” and decision-making. The frontal lobes cannot cope.
14
The Grand Season family
March 2017
Academics: “Wow! It suddenly makes sense!” Besides the frontal lobes, other key areas of the brain are transformed during adolescence. The anterior cingulate gyrus, which helps us stay focused, matures, as do key areas in the cerebral cortex that recently have been linked to language development and spatial reasoning. Such developments may explain why things will suddenly click for a struggling geometry student: The brain can finally make sense of the subject material. www.grandseasonfamily.com
Time: Teens really do need extra sleep Even the best choices, inside or outside of the classroom, will do little good if a teen is too tired. Experts recommend that parents set up a daily schedule at home and stick to it. Melatonin, an important brain chemical, can wreak havoc in an adolescent’s world. Melatonin helps make us drowsy, and in teens it’s secreted later at night. Sleep specialist, Mary Carskadon says such changes in melatonin production push teens to stay up later. Her field studies show that teens average 7 1/2 hours of sleep a night. With 9 hours being the ideal—most teens are sleep-deprived, which impacts brain development. Parents: You can help new brain cells connect In childhood, brain cells grow quickly, like new stalks on a plant. As adolescence accelerates, there’s an overabundance of new connections in the brain. As teens mature, some connections are pruned away, increasing the brain’s efficiency. The chance to help shape this pruning makes parents more crucial, not less. “This is a sensitive time, when feelings are becoming linked with rational thought,” Dahl says. “The stakes are very high, and parents need to feel that it’s okay to be monitoring what their adolescents are doing.”

MONEY
THE TRUTH
Family finances and your kids
Communication is a very important aspect of all family relationships, and all children deserve the whole truth—just not all the time. Especially when it comes to discussing the delicate issue of family finances. DON’T tell young kids how much you earn. Whether your family is more than comfortable or living check to check, salary is something to keep to yourself. Young kids don’t have the context to make sense of sums—and in revealing numbers you run the risk of becoming the talk of the playground. DO help kids understand that not all families have the same amount of financial resources. Some kids reach this conclusion early on, when they see a difference between their toys and their friends’. DON’T tell kids how much you pay the sitter. Nothing undermines the authority of a caregiver like putting a price on his or her services. DON’T gossip in front of your kids about other people’s money habits. If you need to vent about a greedy uncle or your neighbors too-big mortgage, do it quietly and far from your children’s ears.
16
The Grand Season family
March 2017
DO share examples of sound money judgment. For example, talk about that time your friends decided to spend all of their Christmas money helping families in need. DON’T tell your kids you have no money to get out of buying something. A little lie may seem harmless, but if you end up swiping your card a few minutes later, your kids will wonder if they can trust you. DON’T tell your kids how much you worry about paying for college. Tweens and teens might read your anxiety as a message that higher education is a terrible burden. DO talk calmly about college costs early on. When your child hits high school, bring up the subject. If you already know your financial parameters, share them. You also might start talking about how you want your kids to participate in sharing their portion of the college load. But only do this if you can remain calm during the conversation. www.grandseasonfamily.com

MONEY
INVEST FOR TOMORROW Improve your retirement today
While it is never too early or too late to prepare for retirement, today is always the right day to take action. “Saving for retirement can seem overwhelming, but don’t wait to get started,” says Jamie Ohl, president of Retirement Plan Services at Lincoln Financial Group. “The sooner you start making contributions to a retirement account, the more opportunity you have to grow your savings.” Use these tips to get started: MEET THE MATCH: According to a recent Lincoln Financial study, 68 percent of Americans say trying to understand their retirement plan options can be an overwhelming process. If there is one principle to remember when mulling over your options, it’s to be sure to take advantage of any match offered by your employer. Not doing so is leaving free money on the table.
18

INCREASE YOUR CONTRIBUTION: Whenever there is an opportunity to put more into your retirement fund, take it. When you get a raise or a bonus, consider increasing your contribution. If you save money on other expenses in your budget, for example, canceling a cable subscription you don’t use, try to set aside a portion of the saved money for your retirement fund. MEET WITH AN ADVISOR: Consider turning to a professional. The great majority of Americans—95 percent —trust their financial advisors and 90 percent say their advisor helps them achieve financial security. Relying on their expertise can help position you for a more comfortable retirement. More retirement tips and resources can be found at LincolnFinancial.com.

LIFESTYLE
HEADS UP
Safety should come first With the average attention span only lasting eight seconds, and the need to multitask to keep up with an on-the-go lifestyle, it’s no wonder so many of us are easily sidetracked during routine tasks. Here are some tips on how to stay safe by avoiding five distracted behaviors that give would-be criminals an upper hand.
Meandering in the parking lot.
Running with headphones Whether training for an upcoming marathon or jogging around the block, we often take the time to develop the perfect playlist to keep us going, but don’t consider the risks of tuning out the outside world. Before you press play, consider your personal safety and leave the headphones at home, especially at night. Walking your dog at dawn and dusk. Fido requires multiple daily walks to stay healthy. If your schedule only allows for exercising him in the early morning or late evening hours, you may find yourself walking in the dark when you’re overtired, which can delay reaction times when they’re most critical.
20
Whether working late or tackling weekly errands, busy parking lots and garages can be dangerous if you are distracted by an armful of bags, children or technology. Be sure to park in a secure location and when returning, make a brisk and direct path to your vehicle to ensure you get safely in your car and on the road. Before entering the parking lot, have your keys in hand to allow yourself to access the car quickly, and to lock out someone following you, if necessary.
Zoning out on public transportation. One of the perks of public transportation is the ability to use your travel time to multitask, like getting a jumpstart on your day by checking work emails. While you may enjoy not paying attention to the road, don’t let productivity goals supersede your personal safety. Stay aware of your surroundings.

LOVE
CREATE YOUR LOVE STORY Make “happily ever after” a reality
It’s easy to think of a committed relationship as a “journey from me to us.” Two unique people, with distinct thoughts, ambitions and personalities now share their lives. But no matter how compatible you may be in the beginning, you will still face unexpected challenges along the way. Like any journey in life, the best way to ensure you reach your destination is to have a map and a plan. Here are five ideas to help you create your road map to “happily ever after.” 1. KEEP EACH OTHER CLOSE We all have limited amounts of emotional capital. It can be difficult to maintain intensely close relationships with more than a few people, so make sure one is your partner. If your busy lifestyle has you spending more time with friends and acquaintances than the one you call your partner, reconsider your priorities. 2. FIND YOUR OWN HAPPINESS You can never make someone else feel happy, People in relationships need to find their own happiness without expecting their partners to make them happy. Develop your own interests, take good physical and emotional care of yourself. If you make yourself happy and your partner makes himself/herself happy — then you will have lots of happiness to share with each other.

3. BE FORGIVING Sometimes even the most loving partners can say or do petty or thoughtless things. In an unhealthy relationship this could resort in a tit-for-tat race to the bottom of bad behavior. When your partner says or does something hurtful, try to forgive rather than retaliate. That way, if you say or do something your partner finds hurtful, (and it is bound to happen) he or she will also be more inclined to grant you some grace and offer forgiveness. www.grandseasonfamily.com
4. KEEP THE BIG PICTURE IN MIND As a relationship moves forward, it’s all too easy to lose sight of the big picture, especially during emotional strain and conflict. We tend to become petty and focus on things that don’t matter in the big scheme of things. Remember that your relationship is more like a movie than a snapshot. It is a series of images that together tell a story. And just like in the movies, dramatic low points are often followed by uplifting high points. Keep this longterm perspective in mind and you’ll both enjoy your movie more and be better equipped to navigate any troubled waters you encounter along the way. 5. LIGHTEN UP There will be plenty of opportunities in a relationship to discuss difficult issues, but sometimes you just have to lighten up. One of the best ways for a couple to strengthen their connection with one another is to laugh and have fun together. While there should always be space in a relationship to discuss the heavy stuff, make sure you find a balance. Make it a priority to have fun as well. Plan surprises. Be playful. And don’t forget to laugh.

HEALTH
A BRIGHT SMILE Keep your kids’ teeth healthy
We all want our kids to have movie-star smiles as adults. As parents, this means knowing how to protect their teeth when they’re young and training them to practice good dental health care habits to benefit them in the future. Since you’re probably in the process of tossing candy from Valentine’s Day and Christmas, now is the perfect time to “brush up” on instilling good oralhygiene habits. Consider this: according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), nearly one in three children ages two to five years old in the U.S. are affected by tooth decay, which is one of the top chronic infectious diseases among children and can compromise their health, development and quality of life in both the short and long term.
DO CUT DOWN ON SUGAR. Children shouldn’t graze on candy and sugary drinks (including sports drinks and juice). That prolonged exposure to sugar and acid can wreak havoc on teeth. Instead, stick to designated meal and snack times and have them drink plenty of water throughout the day. DON’T PUT BABIES TO BED WITH A BOTTLE. Milk and juice contain sugar. When babies are put to bed with a bottle, the sugar coats their teeth while they are sleeping, causing tooth decay. If you use a bottle before sleep, opt for water.
“Parents are bombarded with unsolicited advice and health findings that are constantly changing,” says Dr. Jade Miller, AAPD President. “We don’t want to add to that stress, but there are a few common misconceptions that could help make a huge difference in your child’s oral health—which is linked to their overall health and wellness.”
DO WEAN CHILDREN OFF OF PACIFIERS BY AGE THREE. Pacifiers are a natural way for children to self-soothe. Prolonged use, however, can increase the risk of cavities and affect the way a child’s teeth bite together, often causing an overbite.
The good news is that tooth decay is nearly 100 percent preventable. The following do’s and don’ts from the AAPD can hold tooth decay at bay and keep kids smiling for years to come:

TRAVEL
AFRICA IS CALLING 5 cornerstones of an unforgettable trip
If you love to travel, chances are you have a bucket list filled with once-in-a-lifetime destinations you simply cannot wait to visit, whether you dream of exploring the homeland of your ancestors, cities renowned for their culinary feats, or a place known for its wildlife. If your focus is the latter, no bucket list is complete without an authentic African safari that provides the opportunity to step into the native habitats of Africa’s big five animals, rare birds and great apes. If this type of intimate animal experience is on your mustdo travel list, here are five reasons Uganda is the perfect destination for your African adventure.

Get up close and personal with mountain gorillas and chimpanzees. Uganda is home to more than half the world’s population of endangered mountain gorillas, and trekking to see these majestic creatures in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a top bucket list item for nature enthusiasts. The country is also a prime location for those hoping to catch sight of chimpanzees, as Budongo Forest Reserve is home to 700 of these playful primates, including three groups that have been habituated and can be visited by humans. See it all at Murchison Falls National Park. It’s a four-hour drive northwest of the capital city of Kampala. Bisected by the Nile River, Murchison Falls boasts 76 species of mammals and 451 species of birds. The park is home to iconic

African game such as elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes and giraffes, as well as river-loving animals like crocodiles and hippopotamuses. The dramatic falls, created by a remnant rift that plunges water 150 feet down the valley wall, provide a picture perfect photo opportunity. Catch a glimpse of the southern white rhino at Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch. It’s home to 15 southern white rhinoceroses and is the only place in Uganda to see this majestic creature. The ranch, a collaborative effort between the Uganda Wildlife Authority and Rhino Fund Uganda, serves as a sanctuary where the animals can live and breed in a protected environment. In addition to the rhinos, more than 40 species of mammals, reptiles and birds call Ziwa home.

Seize the opportunity to enjoy authentic, immersive cultural experiences. Uganda is home to more than 50 distinct tribes, and meeting individuals from any of them offers a unique opportunity to experience their way of life and make lasting personal connections. Join the Batwa Experience for a glimpse into the living history of a tribe that once called Uganda’s forests home. You can also learn the art of basket weaving or beekeeping from communities across Uganda who use these arts to sustain their villages. Uganda is often referred to as “The Pearl of Africa,” and those who visit quickly understand why. To get started, head to www. visituganda.com and begin preparing for the African adventure of a lifetime.

The unofficial anthem of American baseball,
“Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” is traditionally sung during
the middle of the 7th inning. It was written in 1908 by Jack Norworth and Albert von Tilzer, both of whom had never been to a baseball game.
THE LIFE SPAN OF A MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL IS 5–7 PITCHES. DURING A TYPICAL GAME, APPROXIMATELY
70 BALLS ARE USED.
In 2008, Dr. David A. Peters found that sliding headfirst into a base is faster than a feet-first slide.
Baseball gloves have evolved more than any other piece of the sport’s equipment. The last major league ballpark to install lights was Chicago’s Wrigley Field in 1988. Until then, the Cubs did not have lights and played all their home games in the daytime.

HOME
VALUE ADDED 6 smart-home features you need
Fresh paint on the walls, professional staging and an asking price that ends in 999. When you’re selling your home, you’ll do anything you can to help it stand out and sell faster. Since the National Association of Realtors is predicting modest growth for the 2017 real estate market, as a seller you want every edge you can get. Based on what you’ll find at the popular Consumer Electronics Show, the edge you’re looking for just might be a smarter home. “Smart home features are designed to make homes more convenient, appealing, secure and energyefficient—all of which are bonuses when you’re trying to sell a house,” says Geoff Lewis, president of RE/ MAX, LLC. “Sellers who want to move their homes faster may benefit from adding smart features that make their properties more appealing to tech-minded buyers.” Here are six trending smart home features that might catch buyers’ attention and help sell your home faster:
1 2 3
Temperature controls Programmable thermostats were just the beginning. Today’s home temperature controls are even smarter. Like other smart home features, smart thermostats can be controlled remotely from your mobile device. You can program them to make automatic temperature adjustments and then use your smartphone to override the program when desired, such as turning down the temperature on a hot day. Keyless/remote entry door locks Have you ever left the house and worried that you left the front door unlocked? If your home is equipped with a keyless/remote entry door lock, you can use an app on your smartphone to lock the door from wherever you are!
DIY security systems Don’t want to sign a contract or deal with complex security systems? Install-it-yourself security systems are affordable and offer security features like cameras, sensors, motion detectors and alarms or sirens without the need for a security service to monitor them.
Smart lighting From lighting automation that allows you to control lights remotely and wirelessly, to energy-efficient LED bulbs that can change color to match your mood and decor, lighting has come a long way. Some smart lights work in tandem with home automation systems to allow you to turn them on or off (or even dim them) from an app on a smartphone or tablet.

4 5 6
Smart plugs One of the easiest, most affordable smart home upgrades you can make is to add smart plugs to your home. These Wi-Fi-enabled plugs fit existing outlets and can be controlled from a smartphone app. Plug anything into a smart plug, like lights or a television, and you can turn it on or off remotely, track energy consumption or even create an on-off schedule.
Smart appliances Everyday objects that have network connectivity include a growing list of smart appliances. Many manufacturers are offering washers, dryers, refrigerators and other home appliances that can communicate with you—and each other— wirelessly. If you’re thinking of selling your home, find more helpful information at www.remax.com. March 2017

4 tips for better sleep
It’s no secret that sleep is critical to one’s overall health and well-being. We’ve all heard getting six to eight hours of sleep is recommended, but busy work schedules and ongoing personal commitments make it difficult to make sleep a priority. So how can you ensure you’re getting quality shuteye? The next time you’re ready to crawl into bed, apply these four tips to help get better sleep. HARNESS THE POWER OF LIGHT. Light plays a critical role in producing melatonin, the hormone that helps induce sleepiness and regulate your sleep/wake cycle. Setting the right ambiance in your living room or bedroom with warmer, sunset-like shades of white light when you are ready to unwind can help support melatonin production and promote better sleep. KEEP A CONSISTENT SLEEP SCHEDULE. We tend to sleep less during the work week and make up for it over the weekend. In constantly shifting our sleeping patterns, we’re subjecting ourselves to jet-lag-like symptoms. We are creatures of habit and establishing a consistent time to go to bed helps your body react in kind. PAY ATTENTION TO HOW YOU WAKE UP. Exposing yourself to bright daylight is just as critical for regulating your sleep cycle and supporting better sleep quality. Try to make sure you get enough light in the first one or two hours after waking. Light that emits cooler blue tones can help you feel refreshed, be more alert and improve your mood. TONE DOWN THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY BEFORE BED. In order to prepare yourself for a good night’s sleep, you should try to avoid intense light with cooler blue tones, which suppresses melatonin production. Relax an hour or two before going to bed—tucking away your mobile phone, computer or tablet, which might cause stress or overstimulate you prior to bedtime and disrupt your ability to sleep. Every day brings new opportunities and challenges, all of which are more easily faced if you’ve had a great sleep.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director
