DARE TO

DREAM Ideas to spark your imagination.

The gift of life is yours, it is an amazing journey, and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. Life is about the choices you make—choose wisely. We’re just months away from a New Year. If you’re like millions of Americans you have given up on your dreams and are just living in the moment. Instead of letting your dreams disappear, use this list to start dreaming again—and if you have children, why not work together dreaming about your futures. Here are a few thoughts to consider as you recapture your dreams. Remember, today is the perfect day to take the first step toward the rest of your life.

YOU

FIND YOUR TRIBE Try something new for you

Spending time with friends will make you happier and healthier. When you spend time with people who enjoy doing the same things you do, the benefits to your body and mind just keep on coming. Connection leads to greater happiness, and a sense of belonging boosts your immune system. So if you think you could use a little more connection and cohesion with other people, how do you get started?

Here are a few ideas.

Spending time with friends will make you happier and healthier. 1. FOLLOW YOUR PASSIONS

Love to cook? Have to run? Never miss an opportunity to watch classic films? Sometimes as we get older, we let go of interests outside of work and family. You may need to think back to earlier in your life to realize what your talent or passion is.

2. GO WITH A FRIEND

Are you intrigued by your neighbor’s involvement with the local community theater? Ask if you can come along to explore or look behind the scenes. Or investigate a new activity or group with like-minded friends.

3. PUSH YOUR ZONE

Stretch yourself by charting new territory. You may discover a new talent or a new side of you. When you show courage and grit, you are even more likely to bond with those around you.

4. GET BACK TO REALITY

Meeting like-minded people on-line is easy. But online groups can remain virtual and anonymous. If you don’t get out of your living room, the benefits of connection won’t last.

5. GET PHYSICAL

Doing a fun physical activity with other people is a great way to meet friends. Fitness programs like Camp Gladiator, SoulCycle, and CrossFit can be intimidating, but their members form strong attachments.

6. VOLUNTEER

Volunteering is an experience that can change your life, as well as the lives of those you help.

KIDS

A

FIVE THINGS kids need to succeed

sk parents what they want most for their children and they’ll answer the same: Happiness. But if we hover and coddle and grant their every wish, they grow up to expect that treatment from the rest of the world and are going to be seriously unhappy when they realize that’s not how things work. And if we exert too much control while instilling traditional discipline and a strong work ethic, says a new British study, we could scar them emotionally for life. So how do we raise happy children? “The science of positive psychology has shown us that happiness comes from experiencing lots of different positive emotions: gratitude, appreciation, optimism and confidence about the future, joy and contentment in the present,” says Christine Carter, Ph.D. Get started today—no matter what age your children are—cultivating the following five character traits that happy children share. (Not surprisingly—they’re also found in fulfilled adults!)

HAPPY KIDS:

ARE PLAYFUL

ARE CONFIDENT

ARE CONNECTED

ARE GRATEFUL

“There’s so much pressure to sign kids up for loads of activities today, but not enough free time negatively impacts a child’s happiness in two ways,” explains author Katie Hurley. First, if kids are constantly doing structured activities, they are not spending time with you. Different children can handle different degrees of busyness, but a good rule of thumb is one sport, and maybe one other activity per season. Secondly, overscheduled kids don’t get time to just play, which provides a wealth of benefits that contributes to happiness: Play develops imagination and creativity, builds social skills and teaches problem-solving.

“The most important thing parents can give a child is a life that’s full of positive points of connection—at home, at school, on teams, at church and in your community,” says Dr. Ned Hallowell, a Harvard psychiatrist. “And those positive connections occur when you enjoy your kids and have fun together. Set up family traditions and celebrations. Use physical touch: Snuggle, kiss, wrestle.”

Few feelings in life are as thrilling as that moment when a child realizes, “I can do it!” The sense of security that comes with deep connections, along with the skills your child builds through play, leads to the confidence to try new things. And confident children are optimistic children. “When problems arise, as they do for all of us, the confident, optimistic child tackles them with the certainty that they are solvable and continues to try again, rather than give up,” Ned explains. Christine seconds that: “Optimism is so closely related to happiness.”

THINK POSITIVELY

Teaching kids to have a glass-half-full attitude when something negative occurs in their lives is essential to their happiness, and building all the other skills we’ve discussed so far puts them on this positive track. “Understanding what triggers all types of feelings helps children work through the negative so they get to a positive viewpoint,” Katie notes. To make this happen, parents need to be “emotion coaches,” Christine emphasizes. According to research, children who can manage their emotions experience negative feelings for shorter periods of time.

Of course you’ve been teaching your children to say “Please” and “Thank you” since they began to talk. Now a bevy of research connects a deeper understanding and attitude of gratitude with true happiness and life satisfaction. As you model generosity, and your child gets to observe the gratitude that someone feels from it—this feeling will help him realize how much he has to be grateful for.

RECESS ANYONE School stress taking a toll on your child?

TAKE A DAY OFF

ASK FOR HELP

EAT DINNER

CREATE A CALENDAR TALK WITH KIDS

Instead of rushing through your weekend with your list of obligations and activities, take a day off. Let your kids sleep in. Take a walk. Play a game. Spend time together without technology.

If your child is struggling with a specific subject at school, schedule a time to talk with his teacher. Find out if extra help after school—or perhaps a tutor—can help your child gain confidence and reduce stress.

This time of year many families find they eat out more than they eat in. Try to pre-plan meals and prepare healthy snacks for the week ahead. Research shows, eating dinner together builds connectedness and reduces stress.

12

The Grand Season family

If your child is overwhelmed by projects and tests, create a calendar to list their projects. Then, teach your child how to manage their time by doing daily tasks to accomplish the larger goal.

October 2016

SET GOALS

Revisit your child’s goals for the academic year. Many kids think their parent’s expect more than they actually do. Discuss your goals for your child, and find ways to help them set goals that fit their academic abilities.

Health professionals have found stress to be associated with many chronic illnesses. Help your kids identify stress triggers and help them find ways to release their stress.

BUDGET

Trying to save for the holidays? It can be easy to let your finances fall by the wayside when juggling work, family, school and other priorities. Since October is Financial Planning Month, it’s a perfect time to make sure you are prepared for the future. Here are some tips that will help you achieve your financial goals.

(StatePoint)

Pack your own lunch

Take advantage of coupons

Remember to treat yourself

Stay Positive

To help stick to your budget, skip pricey restaurants. Instead, save money and spend the evening cooking with your family. If going out is necessary, consider ordering water instead of a beverage.

Coupons are a great way to save money and stretch your budget. Coupons can be found for almost any purchase on the web. Also, check out your favorite retailer’s mobile applications, you’ll be surprised by what you can save.

Just because you’re sticking to a financial plan doesn’t mean you can’t treat yourself. Budget time and money to indulge in your favorite activities like a night at the movies, seeing your favorite sports team in action, or going bowling.

MONEY

TIPS FOR TEENS Build your teen’s financial smarts

(BPT) For most teens, high school is an exciting time for those sweet, first tastes of independence: first dates, first cars, first paychecks. As low-stakes as some of these milestones may seem, there’s one area that deserves some extra attention in every family: personal finance. Today’s teens are spending $260 billion a year in the U.S., yet only 17 states require completion of at least one financial literacy course for high school graduation.

Share these tips with your teen to help them make wise financial decisions.

Save Early

As soon as you start earning money or receiving an allowance, you should open a savings account. Parents and teens can decide together how much of the earnings should be set aside for savings.

Needs vs. Wants

When something fun comes up at the last minute it’s hard to say no. The best thing teens can do is prepare for situations that lead to impulse purchases. Start by making a list of needs and wants. Each month, plan for the things you need, and figure out how much is left over for the fun stuff.

Keep Track of Spending

Now that you’re aware of how much you need for necessities and what’s left over for the fun stuff, it’s time to start keeping track of everything you spend. Being mindful of every dollar you spend will help you understand your spending habits—and help you find ways to reduce your spending and save even more.

Build Good Credit

Money decisions you make even now as a teenager will make a difference later. Good credit is essential to getting a good rate on a car loan or leasing an apartment later on. To build good credit, always pay your bills on time and carefully manage your checking account.

Before graduating high school and going out on your own, it’s important to sit down and get a solid idea of what it takes to make ends meet while living the lifestyle you desire. The Grand Season family

GROWTH

10 THINGS Happy People Don’t Do

Happiness is something we all strive to attain, and yet it can be a struggle to get there. Research shows that much of our happiness depends on small choices we make on a day-to-day basis. So consider the things happy people don’t do– and perhaps making a few small changes in your life will increase your happiness factor.

Happy people do not:

1. Worry too much about

what others think

Happy people are still human, and everyone cares a little about what others think. But the difference is that happy people don’t ruminate or obsess about others’ opinions of them. They value other people’s perspectives and are open to advice and guidance, but happy people ultimately stay true to their core beliefs and don’t waver from them—even if that means not fitting in with everyone else.

2. Waste time doing

things they dislike

Happy people don’t spend time watching TV shows they don’t love; they don’t attend events that make them feel anxious; they don’t stay in careers that don’t fill them with joy. One of the greatest secrets of happy people is that they know what they don’t enjoy, and they don’t waste time on it out of a sense of fear, inertia or obligation.

3. Allow

themselves to stay stuck in the past

While happy people do pay attention to—and strive to learn from—things that have happened in the past, they’re careful not to spend too much time ruminating on what was. Happy people know that the present is much more valuable than the past, and they focus most of their attention on the now.

18

The Grand Season family

October 2016

5.

Obsess over what might happen in the future

Happy people know that there are a great many things they cannot control, and the future is one of them. Rather than worrying about what could go wrong, happy people strive to prepare as best they can and then direct their attention back to the present moment.

4. Try to manipulate or change other people

Happy people know that change is an inside

job, and the only way people change is if they want to. This knowledge is essential to happy living because it means not wasting time trying to manipulate others. Instead they focus on what they can do to take themselves out of a negative situation.

www.grandseasonfamily.com

6.

Strive to achieve absolute perfection

Perfectionism is the enemy of happiness, and happy people are well aware of this. Though they strive to do their best and aim high with their goals, they aren’t caught up in having “perfect” lives or being the “perfect” spouse, worker or parent.

9.

Seek fulfillment in the wrong places

Happy people see fulfillment in meaningful things—connections with others, spirituality and meaning, and rewarding career paths. They know that status symbols are not as valuable in the long run as a sense of belonging and giving back to the community and the world at large.

10. Happy people don’t stay in negative situations for long Perhaps most important of all, happy people don’t stay in negative situations or tolerate negative people in their lives. Happy people find a way to leave situations, careers and relationships that cause excessive amounts of stress.

Getting everyone in the family to help out in the kitchen is easy, especially on weekends, and they’ll love feeling more involved. The next time you make breakfast, ask your kids to help you.

Set up a pancake bar

Make a weekend breakfast extra special by setting up a short-order pancake station in your kitchen. Offer different flavors of pancake mix, set out chocolate chips, sliced fruit or any other ingredients to create special pancakes that appeal to your family. Don’t forget to top each pancake with a pat of butter or a dollop of whipped cream and, of course, warm syrup. (Make a few extras and freeze for the week ahead.)

Host a breakfast lottery

Do your kids complain about having to eat the same thing every day? Surprise them with a special breakfast lottery. Have ingredients on hand for several breakfast entrees, like pancakes, waffles, or crepes. Put the names of each breakfast item in a hat and make whichever one you draw. This makes for an entertaining and suspenseful breakfast.

Try mini pancake kabobs

When it comes to breakfast kabobs, the possibilities are endless. Mini pancake kabobs are a lively twist on a classic breakfast. All you need is pancake mix, syrup, kabob skewers and your favorite pancake toppings. Cook small, cookie-sized pancakes on a griddle. Then, stack them on skewers with toppings like fruit and peanut butter. Top each kabob off with a drizzle of warm syrup. 20

SNACK HACKS Satisfy your child’s after-school hunger

“How was your day?” you ask your child after school. Rather than hearing a funny recess anecdote or story about a tough test, she murmurs back, “I’m hungry.” School days are long, and if your child participates in after-school activities, they’re even longer. Busy kids need plenty of fuel to keep their bodies and minds going. “Considering most kids get just 20 minutes to eat lunch, and some as early as 10:30 in the morning, after-school hunger becomes a big problem,” says Laura Fuentes, cookbook author, food blogger and founder of MOMables. Fuentes suggests five simple tips to help fight after-school hunger and keep kids going until dinnertime.

1. Plan Ahead

3. Pack a balanced lunch

Adding extras to lunch keeps things interesting for kids, plus helps them feel full for longer. Plan ahead to keep hunger pangs at bay all day. Think about including frozen smoothies, a warm can of vegetable soup, or a variety of dried or fresh fruit.

2. Have portable snacks ready

Balancing the lunchbox can help ensure kids stay satiated longer. Make sure to include protein, healthy fats and carbohydrates, fresh fruits and vegetables in every lunch you pack. Think about dividing the foods sent to school in multiple containers so your child can eat during different break periods.

A balanced snack that can be eaten on-the-go is a life saver. Pack the pantry with wholesome options that both parents and kids love. Additionally, don’t overlook fresh fruit that is both healthy and portable.

22

4. Make a wholesome breakfast

Many kids come home starving because they haven’t eaten enough to fuel their day. Making breakfast part of your morning routine is essential for setting kids up for success.

5. Rule out thirst

“Since thirst can often masquerade as hunger, it’s important to have water available at all times,” Fuentes says. Try tucking an extra water bottle in your kid’s backpack and offer a cup immediately when they get home. To encourage kids to drink more water, add a touch of flavor and color by placing fresh orange slices or berries inside their cup.

TRAVEL

QUICK TRIPS Kids are made for adventures

Everything takes more time with young children in tow—especially when a trip to the grocery store requires a strategic plan. During this stage of life, many parents eliminate unnecessary adventures due to too much stress. If this sounds like you, it may be time to change your mindset and head out on the road. Truth is, kids can be awesome adventurers with the right guides by their sides. Use these tips to bring some spontaneity back into your lives.

Set realistic expectations

As you know, traveling with kids is not like traveling as a couple. They have to stop to eat, to play and to visit the facilities. If you plan for these stops, and embrace the adventure along the way—your kids will follow your lead.

Pick a destination

Keep a list of places you’d like to visit, and make your first few trips just a few hours from home. With movies on demand, apps for every age and a mixture of music, travel time can fly by. Kids need to get used to riding in the car. Yes, the soundtrack of your first trip may sound a lot like, “Are we there yet?” Be creative, and don’t get frustrated. Try to remember some of the games you played on car trips when you were a kid.

24

The Grand Season family

Find the right room

To ensure an enjoyable trip, you’ll want to find a hotel with large rooms, and enough space for your kids to wander. Travel websites often have great deals on last minute hotels. As you take more road trips, you’ll find hotels to fit your family’s needs.

Relax

The beauty of last-minute travel is your family doesn’t have to stick to a strict schedule. Try not to over schedule the weekend before it even starts. Maybe plan one big event for everyone to enjoy, and then spend the rest of your time at the pool, exploring parks or local attractions.

October 2016

Don’t give up!

Your first few trips may not be perfect, but keep trying. Try to look at your outings as adventures, since we all know the bumps in the road will make great stories in the future. www.grandseasonfamily.com

TRIP IDEAS

Grand Canyon

This road trip is about a 3.5 hour drive due north of downtown Phoenix. I suggest staying at the Mountain Ranch Resort near the Gateway to the Grand Canyon. Use Mountain Ranch as your hub for several worthwhile northern Arizona attractions, such as historic Williams and Route 66, Bearizona and Flagstaff.

Sedona

is a magical place and its scenery is simply mesmerizing. Art lovers and recreational enthusiasts will rejoice. Things not to miss include: Slide Rock State Park, a hike through Oak Creek Canyon, a mountain bike ride in Oak Creek Village, the iconic chapel built into the red rocks (Chapel of the Holy Cross), a Pink Jeep tour, and a creek side lunch at L’Auberge.

Tombstone

is the famous Wild West town known for the shootout at O.K. Corral. You can walk the very same streets that Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp, Johnny Ringo, Ike Clanton and a host of other Western Legends walked over 130 years ago. This Arizona Road Trip is just an hour and a half southeast of Tucson.

Monument Valley

Located on the Navajo Nation, Monument Valley is another one of the most photographed areas in the state. The landscape overwhelms, not just by its beauty but also its sheer size. This great valley boasts sandstone formations that tower to heights of up to one thousand feet.

Camp Verde’s Out Of Africa Park

The park has gained much esteem as a highly respected wildlife park for its unique approach that allows its residents to thrive and flourish through spacious habitats, preservation, rehabilitation, education, research, and public interaction.

HEALTH

BLUE LIGHT

Experiencing Headaches? Blurred Vision? Fatigue?

Exposure to blue light might be at the root of your problems.

T

echnology can be beautiful thing. It has expanded our worlds and our minds, connecting people in a way they’ve never been before. But if you’re regularly using mobile devices, it’s possible you’re one of 70 percent of U.S. adults who suffer from digital eyestrain. And if you’re using technology before bed, you’re probably suffering from the sleep and heath-altering effects of blue light. Blue light, which helps us see digital screens clearly in the daytime, is emitted from things you use every day: cell phones, tablets, laptop and desktop computers, and even TVs and digital billboards. And consistent exposure can cause disruptions in your circadian rhythm and sleep patterns, especially if you’re exposed to blue light before bedtime. Since technology consumption isn’t expected to decline anytime soon, but we still need our eyes to function properly to experience and interact with the world.

CHECK OUT THESE TIPS TO MAINTAIN YOUR HEALTH WHILE USING TECHNOLOGY: GET OUT IN THE SUN

Exposing yourself to lots of bright light during the day will acclimate your body to the cycle of being alert and present throughout the day, and improve your body’s ability to sleep at night.

HACK YOUR SLEEP When sleeping, make sure all digital devices are completely off. Sleeping in a completely dark room has been shown to improve recovery and restoration from the day’s activities, allowing you to feel more rested in the morning.

26

The Grand Season family

PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN BEFORE BED Avoid looking at bright screens two to three hours before bed so your body and eyes can “power down,” and help you start the essential nightly restoration process that is sleep.

PRACTICE THE 20-20 SOLUTION Every 20 minutes, look away from your screen for 20 seconds and focus on something that’s 20 feet away. This gives your eyes time to adjust and refocus, reducing fatigue.

October 2016

HAVE THE RIGHT TOOLS For those who wear glasses or any kind of vision correction solution, Carl Zeiss Vision created an entire line of products to help users maintain optimal eye health while interacting with the digital world. From Digital Lens, which helps to combat digital eyestrain and support screen viewing, to Duravision BlueProtect which is specifically designed to protect against blue and violet light waves.

HEALTH

GET ACTIVE Too busy for the gym?

Try these ideas to move more during the day. Park & Walk

Walking to the office from a remote lot can help you start the day energized and ready to conquer on the workday.

Take the stairs

Waiting for the elevator often takes just as long as walking up the stairs, so why not use this opportunity to get your heart rate up? Plus, you’ll get the chance to work your leg muscles.

(BPT) We’re sitting too much and it’s dangerous. The average American spends more than seven hours sitting every day, and the more time you sit, the higher your risk of serious, potentially life-threatening health problems such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Move often

When you’re nose-deep in work, it’s easy to lose track of time. Set up reminders on your phone every 90 minutes to get up and do a quick lap around the office.

Desk exercise

When you need a break, do a few reps of chair sits, or alternate between chair exercises and pushups!

Pace

Conference calls are the perfect time to be active. Put clients and coworkers on speaker, or use your mobile phone during meetings to move around without any trouble.

Meet face-to-face

Rather than sending an email, go to your coworker’s office to discuss the issue face-to-face. This gives you a good excuse to get moving.

Take lunch

Walk outside and enjoy the great weather during lunch. Fresh air and vitamin D are often all you need to stay focused.

Stretch

If you don’t have time to walk around the office, stand up and stretch instead. Stretching is a great way to increase energy levels, reduce muscle tension and get moving.

MR. CLEAN Cleaning made easy

If you have a jug of vinegar at home, you’re all set to clean or spruce up your house.

Here are some great ways to use vinegar in your home.

Clean your window blinds

Put on a white cotton glove—or wrap a thin cotton towel around your index fingers—then dip your fingers into the vinegar and slide them across the blinds.

Unclog and deoderize drains

Pour one-half cup of baking soda and then 1 cup of vinegar down the sink or tub drain through a funnel. The mixture will foam up as it unclogs your drain. When the foam disappears, flush the drain with hot water.

Shine stainless steel

Clean chrome or stainless steel by spraying it with full-strength vinegar. Then buff it to a high shine with a soft cloth.

Restore silverware

Soak silverware or jewelry in one-half cup of white vinegar and 2 tablespoons of baking soda for 3 hours. Rinse items with cold water and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.

One of the most useful household tricks for vinegar is removing accidental pen marks on your favorite shirt or blouse. Dab the spots with white vinegar on a sponge. Rinse and repeat.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer

About Us

“I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director
