EDITOR

NOTE

FROM THE EDITOR election will be coming to a conclusion, along with final decisions about many key issues on the ballot and open leadership positions at the state, city and local municipality levels.

For the last four weeks our families have been inundated by political ads. Our work coffee breaks have been full of speculation and scandals. Even as we head to our children’s activities, concerns about the State of our Nation are being addressed by worried parents and disenchanted voters. While this magazine is being printed the outcome of the presidential

As I reflect on the potential outcome of the national election, the word GRATITUDE gives me peace. Regardless of who wins, our great country will continue to move forward. My hope is that you have been able to identify issues that motivate you to get more involved. I’m also hopeful you’ll be able to share the joy of volunteering with your kids, ultimately reminding them that they can change the world by sharing their time, talents and treasures with those in need. As you move through the hustle

and bustle of the holiday season, challenge yourself to keep GRATITUDE on your mind. As you contemplate buying gifts, consider how writing a letter expressing your gratitude for that person might impact them even more than a gift card to the movies. Finally, don’t forget to identify the things you’re most grateful for. Who are the people who make your life better each day? Move forward to conquer this hectic family month with a grateful heart. It will help you savor each day more. Happy Thanksgiving! Melissa Cox Melissa@thegrandseason.com Editorial Director

GRATITUDE “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” — John F. Kennedy

“Gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions. The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude for.” — Zig Ziglar “At the age of 18, I made up my mind to never have another bad day in my life. I dove into an endless sea of gratitude from which I’ve never emerged.” — Patch Adams

COUNT YOUR

BLESSINGS Don’t just say you’re thankful. Show those you love you’re grateful!

As Thanksgiving rapidly approaches, consider how thankfulness and gratitude differ. Perhaps author Henri Frederic Amiel said it best, “Thankfulness is the beginning of gratitude. Gratitude is the completion of thankfulness. Thankfulness may consist merely of words. Gratitude is shown in acts.”

Here are some creative thoughts and ideas to help rev up your gratitude meter and get your positive attitude running full speed as we sail into the holiday season.

YOU

STEPPING STONES Five keys to overcoming adversity

Adversity sounds like a bad thing, but experts say the opportunity to overcome a difficult situation can be a valuable gift. “Times of adversity are simply steppingstones to live a better life,” says Coach Michael Taylor, author of the new book, “Adversity Is Your Greatest Ally.” Born in the projects, a victim of child abuse and a high school dropout, Taylor was very familiar with hardships in his childhood—and has been no stranger to it in adulthood. His new book details his journey and offers advice to others seeking to do the same. Taylor shares five tools needed to overcome adversity.

Take responsibility for your life

You can’t blame your parents, where you were born or the color of your skin. You can’t blame lack of education, an ex-spouse or your age. Decide to take 100 percent responsibility for your life and make your dreams a reality.

Leave your comfort zone

Fear is a choice. You can choose to let it destroy your dreams or you can embrace fear and use it as a tool to motivate you. You need to learn to become comfortable with being uncomfortable if you truly want to accomplish extraordinary things.

Commit to growth

Read books and take classes that provide you with the knowledge and support to accomplish goals and feel better about yourself. Selfimprovement should be a lifetime goal.

Develop a positive PMA

If you’re determined to transform adversities into allies, you must start with a positive mental attitude. Negativity makes life’s challenges seemingly more difficult to overcome.

With patience and persistence, you can turn the page on a challenging chapter in your life. 10

KIDS

LITTLE THINGS Foster childhood development

(StatePoint) WHILE EVERY CHILD IS UNIQUE, ONE THING IS CERTAIN; the first few years of life are the most important for brain development. And parents can create the right atmosphere to hone language, cognition and social and emotional skills, as well as support physical and motor development. “Everything your child observes and engages with affects his or her cognitive and physical development,” says Dr. Lise Eliot, early brain development expert and member of the Expert Panel at VTech. “You can help create an atmosphere that encourages your baby, infant or preschooler to meet essential developmental milestones.” Eliot recommends baby-proofing your home early to encourage safe exploration for physical development. As soon as babies are mobile, exploration is crucial—and the more space they have to move without limitations, the better. Also, be sure to spend time outdoors each day, visiting playgrounds and parks where children can spend time together in order to foster cooperation, sharing and empathy. Be mindful of the types of toys you purchase for the children in your life. The best choices will be age-appropriate and designed to encourage them to meet developmental milestones. “Children learn through play, and it’s never too early to incorporate teachable moments into a baby’s day,” says Dr. Eliot. To make learning and development fun, parents should seek out toys that have been approved by educators and child development experts. To help you navigate your holiday shopping with ease check out VTech’s Milestones guide, which can help you select toys based on your child’s individual needs. Remember, the best thing you can do for your children is to unplug for a bit

each day, spending time to read aloud, create art projects, sing and play together.

There's a reason the holidays are called the most wonderful time of the year. It's an opportunity to reconnect with loved ones over delicious food and shared traditions. But hosting an event can sometimes feel more like a burden than a blessing. This year, keep your holiday gathering fun—not frantic—with these headache-free hosting tips.

CELEBRATE

WONDERFUL

Five headache-free holiday hosting tips Prepare for your event in advance

Ditch dirty dishes

Start your dinner or cocktail party prep as soon as possible to make room for any last-minute surprises, like forgetting an ingredient or unexpected guests. Develop a checklist and tackle manageable projects each day. This daily preparation will allow more time on the day of the event for you to enjoy your friends and family.

Cleaning up after a holiday party can be exhausting if you use your nice china. Consider purchasing festive paper products at your local party store so that cleaning the dishes doesn’t interrupt your favorite game, movie or conversation.

Simplicity is special

Decorate the night before

Whether you’re a foodie or not, just because you’re hosting a party doesn’t mean you have to prepare all of the food. Perhaps you could plan on providing the main dish, and allow your guests to bring side dishes. Or if you want to serve all of the food, don’t be afraid to purchase prepared food items from your grocery store. It’s amazing how you can call many specialty stores or catering companies and they will do all of the work. If your budget is tight, considering creating a menu of simple recipes. Remember, your guests aren’t just coming for the food.

Set the table, decorate, decide where to put the drinks and gather the extra seats the night before. This will allow you to only have to worry about putting the food and drinks out for your guests to enjoy.

CELEBRATE

SAVOR THANKSGIVING Take time out to appreciate this special day

If you love Thanksgiving, but are overwhelmed by the thought of planning it, we’ve got you covered. With a little preparation, this Thanksgiving can be the most festive yet.

1 2 3 4 5 6

PLAN AHEAD

It sounds simple, but your ideal holiday won’t materialize unless you make it happen. Share your desires openly with family. For example, if you say, “I hope you will stay all day so we can have lots of time together,” your friends and family will then know what you’d like them to do.

RELAX YOUR EXPECTATIONS Without dwelling on it, acknowledge that something will likely go wrong with your day. Your preferences may not be everyone else’s but that’s okay. Roll with the punches and enjoy the moments for what they are.

EMBRACE THE NAP While it’s a myth that the tryptophan in turkey makes you sleepy, the energy your body needs to burn through a big meal can wipe you out. If everyone in your family wants to nap after eating, by all means embrace it!

TAKE A WALK Walking after a big meal wakes you up and aids in, digestion so gather your guests and head outside for a walk around the neighborhood or a leisurely game of football.

DON’T RUSH THE CLEAN UP If you start cleaning up as soon as your meal is finished, you might send an unintended message that it’s time for guests to stop talking and start helping. Enjoy the conversation fully before picking up all the plates.

REMEMBER Thanksgiving is truly about coming together as a family to give thanks. Focus on your blessings and help those around you do the same.

TRAVEL

BE HAPPY

5 Tips for a happier vacation Vacation only comes around once a year for some people, so it has to be both relaxing and rejuvenating. Finding that balance, however, can be a tall order to fill—unless you focus on the things that make you happy. To find out how to make your next vacation a happier one, check out this 5-step vacation guide based on a survey of travelers conducted by Howard Johnson hotels. Invite new company

This seems like a no-brainer—sometimes we need a little reminder. According to the travelers surveyed, having the company of friends and family on vacation is the most important factor to ensure a happy trip. Other must-haves? Experiencing something new and “good, ole relaxation.”

Prepare to indulge

If you’re likely to spend extra money on delicious restaurants and fun activities on vacation, set aside money just for that. Budgeting specifically for transportation, hotel accommodations and activities can ease some anxiety when it comes to pulling out the credit cards.

Vacationers detest when bad weather rains on their plans. In fact, it’s the second biggest fear for travelers, so if your itinerary lists nothing but ski time and tubing, triple check the weather and brainstorm alternatives, just in case. Take a nap, and hang out by the hot tub.

Find hotel deals

With a little digging, you can save serious bucks on hotel deals and discounts— don’t forget to ask about staying consecutive nights discounts and possible room upgrades, too

EAT HEALTHY

The number one fear while traveling is getting sick. Some 40 percent of adults fret over falling ill. While it’s okay to cheat on your diet during vacation, try to eat extra healthy before you leave. Eating a healthy diet will boost your immune system to fend off germs in the future.

LOVE

RELATIONSHIP KEYS 7 things you need to know

Happiness within a relationship is hard to define. Not only is each relationship different, but within each relationship, each person defines happiness in an individual way. Some people view happiness as a peaceful conflict-free life. For some, happiness involves a tremendous amount of fun, great intimacy or lots of laughter. Whatever your definition, it directly correlates to your expectations, desires, wants and needs—and those things can change over time. What holds constant are 7 specific behaviors and attributes laid out below that can almost guarantee the likelihood of long-term success and happiness in a relationship. If you work toward incorporating

— RESPECT —

— PRIORITY —

Every successful relationship is built on a foundation of respect. Respect means caring about your partner’s wants and needs and always taking them into account before speaking or acting. The expectation is that your partner will follow the same guidelines.

If you want to build a stronger positive relationship, let your partner know that he or she is a priority. Commit time and energy to talking and addressing each other’s wants and needs. Be sure that the two of you have “quality time” alone to connect and enjoy each other’s company.

— LOYALTY —

— PICK YOUR BATTLES —

We feel happy when we know that someone has our backs. Relationships have the greatest success when each partner focuses on supporting one another at all times. This means that if someone is antagonizing your partner, you will either back your partner up directly or support him or her from behind the scenes.

22

these keys into your daily life, you will experience greater joy and less conflict in your primary relationships.

November 2016

Strong and happy couples know when to bring up issues and when to put them aside. If you can let something go, move on and still enjoy your partner…let it go! If you cannot move on, then bring it up. Never bring something upsetting up in bed, and never in earshot of children or other family or friends.

www.grandseasonfamily.com

— LOVING GESTURES —

The concept that “actions speak louder than words” is an important one when it comes to relationships. It is not enough to simply feel that you love someone, you must also show that you love that person. Use kind words, be physically affectionate, leave little love notes around the house…whether it’s a verbal gesture or a material one, make sure to let your partner know that you love him or her.

— PUT IN THE WORK—

Partners in a successful relationship understand that you need to put in the work to keep things running smoothly. That means sometimes you need to do things that you do not want to do because it matters to your partner.

— FOCUS ON THE POSITIVES —

Even the best of relationships have challenges and even the most wonderful of partners can have less-than-stellar moments. When times are tough, those who are seeking a happy relationship will combat the negative with a positive. Reverse your thinking to remind yourself that your mate has great qualities and that you are happy to be together.

Tips to clean up daily messes

When it comes to cleaning up after your toddler (or teenagers), it often feels impossible to keep up. Don’t let housework get the best of you! Try these helpful tips to entertain your kids, maintain your sanity and achieve your goal of keeping up a tidy home.

Play the cleanup game

In the words of Mary Poppins, “In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun, and—SNAP!—the job’s a game!” Encourage your kids to pick up after themselves by making it feel less like a chore and more like a game. Use phrases like, “Who can pick up the most balls or toys in a minute?”

Arts & crafts aftermath

There’s nothing more entertaining than a messy arts and crafts hour. From finger paints and crayons to markers and glitter, it’s all fun and games until the kitchen sparkles like a princess. Did you know that a lint roller is a great way to clean up glitter spills? Consider using a disposable tablecloth under the art projects so when time is up, the mess can simply be gathered and tossed in the trash.

Dance like a popstar

Burn some energy and get your kids involved in housework by picking up toys while jamming to their favorite playlist. Assign each family member a task, like dusting or gathering dirty clothes, and rock your way to a tidy home.

GIVING Tips for savvy donors

While many people may be thinking of pumpkins, apple picking and football in the fall, this time of year also marks the beginning of the holiday giving season. Savvy donors understand the practical benefit of giving before the end of the calendar year—to ensure credit is received on their next tax return. In fact, research suggests about 34 percent of all charitable giving is done in the last couple of months of the year. If you are planning to support a charitable organization this holiday season, consider these tips for smarter giving.

Do Your Research

More than 1 million charities are registered with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Compare organizations and study how they function by visiting sites such as the Better Business Bureau. The best charitable organizations ensure that the majority of their revenue goes to the causes they support, not operating expenses.

26

The Grand Season family

Tax Deductable?

The government recognizes the value of charitable organizations so many contributions to approved charities are taxdeductible. To be sure your gift is tax-deductible, visit the IRS website to confirm they have received their nonprofit status. Also, you must also keep accurate records. Be sure to get a written acknowledgment or receipt for your financial contribution. November 2016

Keep Track of Spending

In order to accept donations, most charitable organizations must be registered with the Department of Justice (DOJ). Before you donate, check your state’s DOJ database to confirm the organization has done their paperwork.

SAVE MORE

Keep your finances fit for the new year

It’s the holiday season and you know all that it entails, so don’t let the expenses catch you off-guard— from traveling to see family to throwing your annual party to simply completing your holiday shopping. Early planning and smart strategies can help you end the year on a positive financial note.

Plan Ahead

In the run up to the holidays, put some extra money aside from each paycheck and earmark it for holiday spending. A bit of padding in your purse won’t hurt and can only serve to make you feel more secure all season long.

Create a Budget

A comprehensive budget that accounts for all your holiday expenditures will help you determine whether your holiday needs and wants are realistic. Do some research to find out exactly how much particular items will cost.

Comparison Shop

These days, it’s easier than ever to stretch your budget. Online comparison shopping tools can help you find the best deals on all your holiday gifts. If a tough deal is hard to score on a particular item, be willing to make adjustments to your shopping list in order to stick to your budget.

Rethink Gifts

The thoughtfulness of a gift does not need to correspond to its cost. There are plenty of ways to show you care this holiday season that won’t break the bank. Consider using your talents and skills to make handcrafted gifts for family and friends.

GUILT FREE GUIDE TO HOLIDAY PARTIES Over the next six weeks, you most likely will receive invitations to happy hours, open houses, company events and neighborhood parties. The reality—you won’t be able to (or want to) attend every event you’ve been invited to. So this holiday season, decide how you would like to spend your time. If you’re not sure on how to RSVP, allow these statements to guide you:

I should. This is a clear giveaway that this isn’t the place to spend your time. Rather than going through the motions, consider sending your regrets in a kindly worded thank you note. I can’t wait. This phrase is a clear indicator you definitely need to use a sharpie on your calendar and set several reminders. However, before you attend the event, make sure your expectations are in check. I wish I could. If this phrase shows up on your radar, it might be wise to look at your schedule and see what you can do to make the event happen. If it’s not possible, move forward knowing you tried your best.

HEALTH

PERFECT ATTENDANCE Help your child avoid sick days

At school, kids are exposed to an influx of germs that can cause a number of unnecessary illnesses— including colds, flu and strep throat. Germs like to hang around water fountains, computer keyboards, toilets and students’ hands. To keep your family free from the sniffles all year long, here are some easy-to-follow tips to ensure a happy and healthy winter.

Handwashing 101 It seems simple enough, but research shows only 5 percent of people wash their hands properly. The CDC provides five simple steps: wet, lather, scrub (for at least 20 seconds), rinse and dry. Hand washing is the best defense against germs and if soap and warm water aren’t available, using hand sanitizer is a good option.

Sanitize school supplies School supplies, lunch boxes and the bottoms of backpacks should be sanitized weekly. These items are exposed to a variety of germs lurking in places like gym lockers, desks and in bathrooms. Use disinfecting wipes on plastic objects and throw items like lunch boxes and backpacks in the washing machine.

Set a sleep schedule A regular bedtime and an alert morning go hand-in-hand. The National Sleep Foundation recommends establishing a nighttime routine that may include reading a book or taking a bath to signal the brain that it’s bedtime. Technology such as tablets, smart phones and gaming devices should not be kept in the bedroom. If you’re wondering how much sleep your child needs nightly, experts recommend school-aged children sleep 9-11 hours, and teenagers sleep 8-10 hours.

Eat Breakfast Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Skipping breakfast can mean decreased cognitive performance in areas like alertness, attention, memory and problem solving. A healthy, balanced diet keeps kids mentally sharp and focused.

FUN

GET CRAFTY

Quality time with your kids just got easy. As you get prepared for the holidays, here are two easy projects you can do with your children and share with your guests. It might be a good idea to take a walk through your neighborhood and a trip to the store together to gather supplies before making these crafts.

Leaf Jar Supplies: Fake leaves Mason jar/glass jar Hot glue gun

Directions: 1. Gather your leaves and place them on the jar all the way around. 2. Hot glue them to the jar. You do not need to cover the jar from top to bottom. 3. If you have multiple colors spread them out so that one color isn’t bunched together.

Turkey Trot Cookie Pops Supplies: Oreos Pretzels Orange candy pieces or candy corn Edible eyes Chocolate melting bits Candy sticks

Directions: 1. Melt chocolate according to package instructions. 2. Roll Oreo cookies in the melted chocolate. 3. Place them on pretzels immediately. 4. Add eyes and nose candy bits. 5. Place in the refrigerator for 10 minutes to set.

GROWTH

GIVE THANKS Carve a good mood groove

T

he holidays are a reminder to take inventory of all the blessings we have in our lives. Making gratitude a habit can have positive benefits to your own happiness, as well as those around you, by creating stronger bonds in your relationships, finding kindness in others and carving new “good mood” grooves into your brain. What’s more, these gratitude rituals are relatively simple to do and can be performed anywhere at any time.

THE WRITE STUFF

The dinner table is a great place to reflect and reinforce our feelings of gratitude. Before you break bread, start at one end of the table and encourage every person to share something they are thankful for.

Think of someone in your life who has made a significant positive impact and write a letter expressing how much that person means to you. If possible, meet this person face-to-face and read the letter aloud.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer

About Us

“I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

CULTURE

ME & MY SELFIES Changing the face of communication

millennials will take an average of 25,000 selfies in a lifetime The way we communicate and relate to one another is rapidly evolving

“Millennials are attracted to selfies and mobile videos as a way of sharing their opinions and voices,” says Jarret Streiner, CEO and President of Selfeo, an immersive, interactive video distribution platform. “Self-produced video and picture content brings about a whole new form of expression to users.”

It is estimated that while average millennials will take 25,000 selfies in a lifetime, they are replacing the static selfie with self-produced videos to express themselves. Users are taking to multiple platforms— including Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook Live—to share richer details of their everyday lives through streaming video content as a way of cultivating their own personal brand to their followers.

“Video-distribution platforms are taking on a growing relevance in the lives of individuals, because they provide an alternative platform to mainstream media.” says Streiner.

(StatePoint)

and new platforms and applications are constantly feeding that change. At the center of it all is the ability for individuals to create their own video, photo and written content that allows them to express opinions and thoughts in real-time.

With these types of social media capabilities so readily available to consumers, and a growing number of people looking for active engagement with one another on the hot topics of the day, experts say mobile video and selfies are here to stay. www.grandseasonfamily.com
