Don’t let this be a blue Christmas. Feelings of sadness that last throughout the holiday season—especially during the months of November and December—are often referred to as the holiday blues. The holidays are usually viewed as a time of happiness and rejoicing. But for some people, it can be a time of painful reflection, sadness, loneliness, anxiety, and depression.

Don’t Isolate Yourself

Even people who love the holidays can experience the blues during this busy season. The holidays are often a time of high emotions and demands, which can leave a lot of people feeling stressed and exhausted.

Find Time for Yourself

There are a number of reasons why people might experience the holiday blues. Some of the possibilities may include: lack of sleep, excessive eating and alcohol use, isolation and loneliness and unrealistic expectations. There are several things you can do on your own to make the holidays easier to deal with.

Drink In Moderation

Social isolation can be a major risk factor for depression. The problem is, sadness often makes you want to hide at home alone. Make sure that you leave enough time for yourself to relax. Even 15 to 20 minutes a day to enjoy some quiet time, read a book, listen to music, take a bath, or some other relaxing activity can do wonders for your stress levels.

Set Realistic Expectations

It’s fine to be excited about the holidays and make plans for the things you want to do. But it is also important to keep your expectations realistic and reachable. Remember, the holidays change just as people change. Kids grow older, people move, and new people will become a part of your life. VALLEY VIEW COMMUNITY FOOD BANKS Feeding the community

Jesse Ramirez, a native Arizonan, is passionate about feeding people in need. Not long after he started the Valley View Community Food Bank, Jesse and his team were feeding 300 people daily in 2007. Today, they are feeding over 540 daily. About 48% of his clients are senior citizens over 55, and 32% are either children or adults in their 20’s. Each day, the food bank distributes 6,000 pounds of food. You may ask, where does the food come from? Jesse say’s, “Most of the food is donated from private food drives, churches, Sam’s Club, local scouting groups, private donations, businesses and organizations.”

The main purpose of the Valley View Community Food Bank is to supply people in the community with wholesome food. Jesse says, “When you combine what people have gone through with COVID, unemployment, and higher food costs, the number of families needing assistance continues to grow. Traditions are a family’s way to pass down important events and memories associated with a specific holiday. The greatest thing about traditions is they can be started at any given point and can be used to help your family cultivate a deep bond, or can signal to new friends, that they are indeed a part of your family traditions. Consider using the following ideas to cultivate your Christmas traditions:

Take the family to the mountains or to a tree farm and cut down your own Christmas tree. Attend a late-night Christmas service on Christmas Eve.

Go to a Christmas concert in your neighborhood. Stuff an extra stocking if you might welcome an unexpected guest for Christmas.
