PAWS CORNER Q: I need to find a new home for my two cats. I’m in my 70s and have chronic health conditions. No one in my family can take them, and the local shelter charges $85 per cat. I can’t afford that so what do I do? A: Many shelters take in pets as voluntary surrenders due to uncontrollable circumstances like personal medical problems. They charge a one-time rehoming fee per pet ranging $45-$150, depending on the shelter. The rehoming fee helps cover the cost of food, housing and medical care for surrendered animals. Tips for reducing that annoying discomfort

Go low impact You don’t need to put tremendous weight on your joints or jump up and down in order to break a sweat or elevate your heartrate. When you’re already in pain, this type of exercise can actually make things worse. Instead, opt for high-quality, low-impact workouts.

The health benefits of regular exercise are undeniable, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends 30 minutes of exercise at least five times per week. High-impact exercises like running and weight training, however, can lead to joint pain, especially if you have a joint condition. The good news is that smart exercises with low impact can alleviate joint pain and deliver the same health benefits.

Hydrate It may seem obvious, but ensuring that you drink the recommended daily intake of water is vital to reducing pain in your joints. Proper hydration helps your body eliminate wastes and toxins that can lead to painful joint conditions. Plus, it helps to keep the joints lubricated and flexible, reducing friction and inflammation and helping to maintain healthy tissue.

Here are a few tips to consider for a healthy start to 2020.

Stretch daily Stretching increases flexibility and range of motion, improves movement and function, reduces pain and stiffness and prevents further injury. Just remember to move slowly and keep it gentle.

Keep moving Trying to protect your joints by not moving actually does more harm than good. Regular exercise can actually help joint pain and ease symptoms of chronic joint conditions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Just be sure to talk to your doctor about your exercise plan before you get started.

At the very least, spend a good five to 10 minutes in the morning stretching your hamstrings, quadriceps, calf muscles and hip flexors. Your body will thank you for it in the future.

Dinner theater—Interactive murder mystery-type dinner shows have become very popular. Good food, lively entertainment, and fun. A perfect date combination.

Designate a spot for incoming papers Papers often account for a lot of our clutter. This is because we put them in different spots. Designate an in-box tray or spot in your home and don’t put down papers anywhere but that spot.

Visit the aquarium—Aquariums aren’t just for schoolchildren, they’re also a great place for a date. Take a leisurely stroll while you survey the sea life.

Start clearing a starting zone What you want to do is clear one area. This is your no-clutter zone. It can be a counter, or your kitchen table, or the three-foot perimeter around your couch. Wherever you start, make a rule: nothing can be placed there that’s not actually in use. Everything must be put away. Once you have that clutter-free zone, keep it that way! Each day slowly expand your no-clutter zone until it envelopes the whole house! Clear off a counter You want to get your house so that all flat spaces are clear of clutter. Maybe they have a toaster on them, maybe a decorative candle, but not a lot of clutter. So start with one counter. Clear off everything possible, except maybe one or two essential things. Pick a shelf Now that you’ve done a counter, try a shelf. It doesn’t matter what shelf. It could be a shelf in a closet, or on a bookshelf. Don’t tackle the whole bookshelf— just one shelf. Clear all non-essential things and leave it looking neat and clutter-free. Pick up 5 things and find places for them These should be things that you actually use, but that you just seem to put anywhere, because they don’t have good places. If you don’t know exactly where things belong, you have to designate a good spot. Do this for everything in your home, a few things at a time. Momentum is a friend of clutter reduction.

Make the most of the opportunity. Be intentional in how you spend your time Enforce real boundaries in your life so that you carve out enough time for the things that matter the most to you. Say no to people you don’t like spending time with. Spend time with your favorite people on a regular basis. Carve out time in your calendar to make time for fun, lightness and playfulness. Make time for rest and relaxation Between all of your healthy meals, optimized sleep habits, and playfulness, you want to make sure you’re also allowing yourself the time and space to breathe and relax. Take naps when you feel like it. Rest and relaxation are vital to loving yourself. Spend time alone As contradictory as it sounds, one of the best ways that you can cultivate a loving relationship with yourself is to regularly spend some time alone, regardless of whether you’re single, in a relationship or married.

By Patricia Goodson, Publisher A couple of months ago, my husband Bob and I had the opportunity to experience an incredible trip to Hawaii. You see, Bob had always wanted to see Hawaii, and take a cruise as well. After spending time with our friends at Ford’s World Travel, we booked the perfect trip aboard Princess Cruise Line’s “Star Princess.” The Star Princess was as well-equipped as any 5-star hotel. There was always something happening on board. If you’re a foodie—this

One of the highlights of our trip included exploring Hilo, it was filled with black-sand beaches, tropical rainforest and volcanic mountains. While in Honolulu, we visited Pearl Harbor, where the site of the USS Arizona Memorial and the “Punchbowl” are haunting reminders of the tragic events of December 7, 1941. While in Maui, we visited Mt. Haleakala, a dormant volcano—the views were stunning. HOLLYWOOD HAPPENINGS Sophia Loren, one of four of the last living movie legends of The Golden Age of Hollywood (the others being Jane Fonda, Shirley MacLaine and Robert Redford), received a lifetime achievement award from Lina Wertmuller at the Capri-Hollywood film festival on Dec. 30. Sophia started her career in the 1950s and made more than 80 films, including “Two Women,” for which she won a best actress Oscar in 1961.

When Jennifer Hudson made the rounds of talk shows promoting “Cats,” she revealed her current project is portraying Aretha Franklin. Franklin told Hudson after seeing her in Broadway’s “The Color Purple,” “You are my choice to play me when they make a movie of my life.” Hudson confessed: “That was a long time ago. I can’t believe it’s actually happening.” The film is called “Respect” and co-stars Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra MacDonald, Mary K.
