THE STRESS OF VISITING THE VET

Q: My poodle mix, “Jester,” is a sweet and energetic dog—until it’s time to go to the vet. When the carrier kennel comes out, he begins to tremble and whine, and resists being put in. He is always very stressed at the vet office. How can I help him be less scared about visiting the vet? A: You’re not alone in this. Many pets get extremely anxious when they have to go to the veterinarian. And it can be a stressful experience for the owner, too, who knows their pet is so worried and stressed out. Talk to your vet for suggestions and strategies to minimize your dog’s anxiety on the way to the office. The day before Jester’s checkup, call the vet’s office and remind them that your dog will need extra TLC during the visit. This way, the vet is prepared, too. Spend time desensitizing Jester to the carrier cage. This will take a while but will make it easier to place him in the cage for any trip—not just the vet visit.

Make pickle shot glasses: Cut off the ends of each pickle so that both ends are flat, then cut each pickle in half crosswise. Bring the love of songs back into your life...and others!

Have you ever tried to remember all the words to a song from your childhood or teenage years, or something you heard your parents sing? If you can remember one or two lines of a verse or the title, you can find the whole song on the Internet. Type one line of a song in Google, and you’ll be amazed. Not only will all the lyrics pop up, but so will links to videos of groups singing the song. World War II was full of good music, and chances are you remember at least parts of some of the songs. Search online for World War II songs, or any other era you’re interested in. Wikipedia even has categories such as “Songs of 1950s.” Or search Wikipedia by singer and click on their discography for all the songs they released.

PARKING TIPS 1. When parking in a large store lot, don’t “hover-and-settle” trying to park close. Instead, park at the far corner of the lot. For the price of a few steps you’ll save yourself the frustration of circling and will be able to easily spot your lonely car among the empty spots.

(And a little extra exercise never hurt anybody.) 2. Traveling in a town you don’t know very well? When you park, pull out your smart phone and drop a pin in your maps App. After you’re done exploring on foot, simply get directions back to the pin to find your car.

3. When parking at the airport or in any parking garage, use you smart phone to take a photo of your spot and level (or any other location information on signs) so you can easily recover where your car is parked later!

HOLLYWOOD HAPPENINGS Once upon a time in Hollywood, there were five major studios: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Warner Brothers, Columbia, Paramount and 20th Century Fox. Between them they created the majority of the greatest films made from the 1935 through the 1960s. Then, as television rose to great success, and popularity within the home, the studios began to experience a decline. It signalled the end of Hollywood’s “Golden Age,” when films like “The Wizard of Oz,” “Casablanca” and “Gone With the Wind” were released. When the crash came, MGM sold its backlot to condo builders. Sony acquired Columbia, then bought what was left of the MGM lot and moved Columbia there. Warners and Paramount had no backlots but retained their studios, while 20th Century Fox sold its backlot, which became Century City. Now Disney has acquired 20th Century Fox and renamed it 20th Century Studios. The five major studios paved the way for the new wave of movie-making today, operated by five streaming services: Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, Hulu and Apple. Time marches on. If you don’t love it, don’t stream it!

As the population of older U.S. adults grows, more Americans are taking on long-term caregiving duties for loved ones. An estimated 43.5 million adults in the U.S. have provided unpaid care in the past 12 months, according to AARP. “While caregiving presents many opportunities for growing strong bonds with loved ones, the work itself can be demanding, eventually taking a toll on those shouldering the burden,” says Lakelyn Hogan. Hogan shares the following tips to navigate the challenges. It’s easy to get lost in the shuffle of medical care. When something is wrong, you need to know what it is, and quickly. That didn’t happen with a veteran in New York not long ago. For that veteran, there was a delay in finding out about his abnormal test results. Policy says that if the results require intervention or action, the patient needs to hear from the ordering provider within seven days, but in his case, there was a 36-day delay. The person who ran the tests quickly passed along the results to a surrogate provider... who sat on them for 28 days. After handing them off to the next in line in the hierarchy (the chief of staff), the veteran was finally notified eight additional days later!

The Nightingale (R) A young Irish woman (Aisling Franciosi) is bound to the cruel Lieutenant Hawkins (Sam Claflin) in colonial Australia. At the end of her indentured service, he refuses to free her, and she is victimized by Hawkins and his cadre of friends. With no one to turn to, she enlists the help of an aboriginal man named Billy and sets out for retribution. The mood is set perfectly by director Jennifer Kent. Playing With Fire (PG) John Cena stars as a tightly wound supervisor of a top tier team of firemen. He and his squad —comedy backup by Keegan-Michael Key and John Leguizamo—rescue a trio of plucky kids (Brianna Hildebrand, Christian Convery and Finley Rose Slater) from a raging wildfire. Big boy babysitters then get a lesson in wildly unpredictable forces of nature: kids. The laughs resonate in this light, entertaining romp for the entire family.

What this demonstrates is that you, the patient, must ask questions. Specifically you need to know: When will the medical test results be ready? Who will have those results? Get the name and phone number. If you’re transported by ambulance and can communicate, ask where you’re being taken.
