CULTIVATE NEW FRIENDSHIPS It’s possible to make friends as an adult, but it may require a bit of effort and dedication. Every season of adulthood brings new challenges and making new friends can be one of them. Time constraints, family issues and health concerns can make it hard to meet people or even nurture relationships you already have. But friendships are essential for your emotional and mental well-being. Research showed that the intensity and quality of friendships are positively correlated with how satisfied you feel with your life. The study also indicated that maintaining adult friendships can help you prevent: depression, feelings of loneliness and social isolation. So, how do you make friends as an adult? Consider these steps to improve your social circle: Try to transition acquaintances into solid friendships. One way to grow your network is by tapping into your existing one. You may already have acquaintances that are potential close friendships in the works. Maybe you haven’t had the chance or time to explore those connections yet. Consider the people you encounter regularly at your fitness classes, place of worship, book clubs or favorite coffee shop. To find people who share your interests and beliefs and who can potentially become friends, try the following: • Join local groups on Facebook, MeetUp, and other platforms that take social activities offline. • Start or join a club or organization that revolves around a specific hobby or interest share about your interests on social media and check who engages • Participate in local events, such as signing up for a 5k race or volunteering at a local animal shelter. • Take a group class for cooking, dancing, golfing, or gardening You may already be doing these items, so that means you could have many potential friends around you and could move to transitioning them into closer connections. Find something that is just yours

Having your spouse as your best friend can actually be one pillar that can hold your marriage together even if your romantic attraction for one another were to fluctuate. True friendship lasts a lifetime.

This is also referred to as “rituals,” and are generally defined as unique and regularly occurring activities and interactions that help build a relationship. Every friendship begins with common interest. Find something simple you both love to do – or want to do more of – and do it together on a regular basis.

If you and your spouse are already best friends, that’s wonderful. If not, it’s maybe time to cultivate friendship in your marriage.

Seek opportunities to try new things

Friendship is about having fun. Play together. Laughter and fun are keys to building a friendship with your spouse. Fun in marriage is generally about having more adventures and enjoyment together. One of the best ways to do this is to try something new together.

Allow for conflict

Remember that neither marriage nor friendship is completely perfect. In fact, the healthiest friendships are those in which each person can be honest with the other. Sometimes, this means giving your friend “tough love” or confronting them with a difficult topic. Such an interaction may not be easy, but it’s done because you love and care for this person and their wellbeing.

Be on your partner’s team

When obstacles and outside stressors come against your partner, they need to know you’ve got their back. After all, you’re on the same team. That means you can show genuine interest in being on your partner’s side and try your best to never do or say anything that could leave them feeling insignificant or alone.
