Cultivate mental toughness

Life is an amazing journey filled with plenty of ups and downs! Just when you think you can’t move forward, you realize you have made it through the storm. Then, you realize the last storm has given you the strength you need for the next season of life. Experts say these skills also help people weather the storms of life:

1. Resilience in the face of adversity

Resilience in an integral part of mental toughness. Resilience or grit, is the ability to keep moving forward in spite of challenges, rejection, setbacks, obstacles, and disappointments. It’s the ability to never give up, no matter what.

2. Emotional intelligence

Many experts now believe that a person’s emotional intelligence quotient (EQ) may be more important than their IQ, and plays a larger role in the achievement of success, the quality of relationships, and overall happiness. EQ is the ability to understand our own and the emotions and reactions of others. Without this ability you’re lost before you’ve started.

3. Focus

It’s possible to develop your mental toughness by keeping your attention on your long-term goals and not getting side-tracked by temporary setbacks. An unwavering focus helps you to keep perspective in the face of sudden setbacks. Don’t let short–term profits, negative feedback, or a hectic schedule prevent you from taking the next step towards your goal.

4. Commitment

Mentally tough people are more consistent than others. They don’t miss deadlines, appointments or meetings. Part of mental toughness is a commitment to always show up, to always deliver and to not get side-tracked, to always finish what you have started.

Knowing how to handle failure is an important aspect of being mentally strong. Pour into a ziplock bag and snip off a corner with scissors. Pipe into glasses and garnish each with pineapple and a maraschino cherry.

INGREDIENTS 6 oz. vodka, divided 3 c. lemonade, divided 2 c. frozen mango 2 c. chopped strawberries 3 c. ice Lemon slices, for garnish Strawberries, for garnish DIRECTIONS Fill blender with mango, 2 ounces vodka, 1 cup lemonade and 1 cup ice. Blend until smooth. Transfer mixture to a separate container and freeze for 30 minutes. Clean blender. Fill blender with strawberries, 2 ounces vodka, 1 cup lemonade and 1 cup ice. INGREDIENTS RIM 1/3 c. Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, finely crushed 1 tsp. lime zest 1 lime wedge DRINK 2 c. tomato juice 8 oz. vodka 2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp. horseradish 1 tbsp. hot sauce Juice of 1/2 lime Freshly cracked black pepper GARNISH 3 pickle spears 3 stalks celery 3 lime wedges Flamin’ Hot Cheetos DIRECTIONS On a small, shallow plate, stir to combine crushed Cheetos and lime zest. Rub the lime wedge around the rims of three glasses, then roll the wet rims in Cheeto mixture to coat. In a large pitcher, stir together tomato juice, vodka, Worcestershire, horseradish, hot sauce, and lime juice and season Bloody Mary mixture generously with pepper. Add ice to glasses and fill with Bloody Mary mixture. Garnish with pickle spears, celery stalks, lime wedges, and a small handful of Cheetos. Serve with straws.

VETERANS POST

The Department of Veteran Affairs has been busy. It was recently announced that it has completed 150 Fourth Mission assignments across the country. Fourth Mission’s goal is to improve preparedness for response to war and national emergencies by developing plans and taking actions to support service to Veterans as well as emergency management, public health and homeland security efforts. Here’s what the VA’s Fourth Mission has accomplished in all 50 states plus territories: • Provided 935,000 pieces of Personal Protective Equipment. • Admitted 488 non-veteran citizens to VA medical centers for treatment. • Deployed over 5,000 medical personnel to 1,215 state VA homes, 980 community nursing homes and 94 non-VA hospitals. In Arizona, they provided staffing for six civilian hospitals. In Florida, they helped over 8,000 long-term-care patients at 82 facilities. In Virginia, it was 852 long-term-care facilities.

It has gotten harder to get pets from overseas

Q. I’ve been working for months to purchase a purebred dog located in Ukraine. Today, the transaction was put on hold by the breeder, who said that dog imports are being banned by the U.S. What is going on? A: Dogs are being imported into the U.S. with rabies certificates that are fraudulent. After at least 450 imported dogs were found to have fake certificates, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention took action in June and temporarily banned the import of dogs from more than 100 countries with a high rabies risk, including Ukraine, for at least one year. Why did the number of fraudulent rabies certificates rise so quickly? In a word, the pandemic. During lockdown, demand for dogs (and cats) soared. Worried about the risk of animals being abandoned when their owners went back to the office, many shelters drastically raised fees and other requirements for adoption. Demand for imported dogs rose. At this time, there are no options for those who intend to purchase or adopt a dog from one of these countries.

24 graham crackers, crushed 1/3 cup butter 1/4 cup packed brown sugar 1 (6 ounce) package raspberry flavored Jell-O® mix 1 cup boiling water 15 ounces frozen raspberries 20 large marshmallows 1/3 cup milk 1 cup heavy whipping cream, whipped

FOR THE CRUST Cooking spray 1 c. (2 sticks) butter, softened 1/2 c. granulated sugar 2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp. kosher salt

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Mix graham cracker wafer crumbs, butter and brown sugar until well combined. Set aside 1/4 cup of this mixture for a topping and press the remainder into one 9x13 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 10 minutes. Set aside to cool. Dissolve raspberry gelatin in the boiling water and add the frozen raspberries, stirring until melted. Chill until partially set and spread on wafer base. Melt marshmallows with the milk. DIRECTIONS Make crust: Preheat oven to 350° and grease a 9”-x-13” pan with cooking spray. In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add flour and salt and mix until just combined. Press into prepared pan and bake until lightly golden, 20 minutes. Let cool while making filling and crumb topping. Make filling: In another large bowl, beat cream cheese and sugar together until no lumps remain. Add egg and beat until

combined, then beat in sour cream, vanilla, and lemon juice. Fold in blueberries. Make crumb topping: In a small bowl, mix together melted butter, sugar, flour, and lemon zest until mixture resembles wet sand. Pour filling into cooled crust, then top with an even layer of crumb topping. Bake until topping is golden and center is just set, 40 minutes.
