He has soiled his own bed three times so far (we crate him at night) and doesn’t make it through the day—he starts whining by the door around lunchtime and, if we’re not home, will just go anywhere in the house. How can we fix this?

A: How old is Jake? It sounds like, barring any unknown physical issues or illness, he is a young puppy with a small bladder. He simply can’t hold it as long as a fully grown dog. The fact that Jake makes it a point to whine by the door means that the house training is effective, but you may be waiting much too long to take him out. When he has to go, he will go. That includes soiling his crate, which is an absolute last resort for a dog. Follow this guideline: Take your puppy’s age in months, and add one. That gives you a rough estimate of the maximum number of hours Jake should wait before going outside to pee or poop. Take him out just before bed and first thing in the morning regardless of his age.

Out of your comfort zone
Sometimes what keeps us from getting what we want in life is our reluctance to change our routines and habits. Whatever it is—you can break out of these patterns and create positive change. Here are some ways to step out of your comfort zone and into greatness:
Face a fear you have
Do you have a fear that’s been hanging around awhile? Does it come to mind and then go dormant for lack of pushing yourself? Think of that one fear that may be holding you back from your potential and set a goal to tackle it in the next three months.
Do what scares you
Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Do one thing every day that scares you.” How powerful would that be to make a conscious effort to do what scares you? What would open up? Start out by making a list of three things at the beginning of the week and challenge yourself to do each one during the week. Make it fun and see what good things transpire.
Make a bold move
Sometimes we just need to take a big risk for big rewards. The first step is to set a goal that is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timelimited. Then create a plan with action steps. Now take one small action every day towards your goal, or at least once a week.
Have tough conversations
“A person’s success in life can usually be measured by the number of uncomfortable conversations he or she is willing to have,” says Author Tim Ferris. Having a conversation with a friend, loved one or neighbor about something that bothers you in the relationship is one of the most difficult and courageous things to do.
Try something new
A way to step out of what is familiar is to explore new and different things. You can start by creating a bucket list, a list where you write down all the experiences you would like to do in your lifetime like travel to certain places, run a marathon, do yoga, write a book, play an instrument, become a tutor. 4 salmon fillets, about 6 ounces each 1/4 cup olive oil 2 tablespoons honey Salt, to taste 4 tablespoons chopped pecans OR 1 tablespoon coarsely chopped fresh rosemary and 1 tablespoon coarsely chopped fresh thyme 2 lemons, cut into wedges or thin slices
1. Preheat oven to 425 F. 2. Line a baking sheet with foil and spray with cooking spray 3. Place salmon fillets skin-side down on the prepared sheet. Sprinkle with salt. 4. Pour olive oil and honey into a small bowl, and stir to combine well. Spoon the mixture generously over fillets. Press nuts on top or sprinkle with herbs. 5. Bake in oven until completely cooked through, about 10-15 minutes, or until fish flakes readily with tip of a fork. Use spatula to transfer to dinner plates. 6. If you don’t have a regular source of healthcare or you’ve never had your cholesterol checked, you’re not alone. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, nearly 26 percent of men in the United States do not have a regular source of healthcare. Reverse this trend with medical tests and screenings to keep you healthy.
BODY MASS
Excess weight increases your risk for diabetes and heart disease. Your body mass index (BMI) measures your body fat based on your height and weight, and it can determine if you’re overweight or at risk for developing obesity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an adult BMI between 18.5 and 25 is within normal range.

If your blood pressure is high, you may require medication to control it and ward off heart disease, kidney disease and stroke. If your blood pressure is within the normal range, you only need to have your blood pressure checked every two years. Normal blood pressure is less than 120/80 mm Hg, according to the American Heart Association.

DIABETES
Blood pressure higher than 135/80 mm Hg may be a symptom of diabetes. Testing for diabetes may include a hemoglobin A1C blood test, a fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test, or an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). A single test is insufficient to diagnose diabetes. A second test must confirm that your blood glucose level is abnormally high.
MENTAL HEALTH
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than 6 million men are diagnosed with depression in the United States every year. Feeling hopeless or experiencing loss of interest in things you normally enjoy for more than two weeks may signal depression. Don’t dismiss prolonged bouts of feeling down or try to tough it out. Your doctor can screen you for depression and help determine how to treat it.
MELANOMA
Melanoma is currently the country’s fifth most common cancer among men. More women than men get melanoma before the age of 50, but by age 65 the ratio reverses. Men then get melanoma twice as often as women. Check your skin every month for moles that have changed or look abnormal.

To remove muffins or rolls from a pan, set it on an old, damp towel for a minute. The steam must loosen the bottoms, because they just slide right out. Shake all ingredients except soda with ice and strain into serving glass with fresh ice. Fill with plain soda or lemon-lime soda. Garnish with mint sprig and lemon wheel.

Instructions
Rinse a martini glass with a little absinthe and ice, stir and let sit and bind to the glass. Fill a shaker with ice, add the Maker’s Mark® Bourbon, Aperol, bitters and vermouth. Stir gently. Discard the ice and absinthe. Strain the cocktail into the glass. Garnish with a strip of orange zest.
