Patience is one of the most valuable tools that you have at your disposal. But patience is a skill that you need to continually cultivate. If you need to work on being more patient, work on cultivating it with these ideas:

a deep breath. Consciously choose how you react to the situation at hand by shifting your perception; try to look at the bigger picture. It’s only a bump in time, not forever.

1. Let go of the gas and slow down

There may be a person in need of assistance nearby. You can practice patience by taking the time to stop and hold a door open for another person; to help a person carry their groceries to their car, or even send a smile their way to remind them that they are not alone. Being of assistance to others is a great way to practice patience.

When you catch yourself speeding through life, take action and slow down. Drive the speed limit and watch how others rush past you. Be spontaneous and take the long drive home to enjoy the journey.

2. Practice active listening

Really listen to the person in front of you, rather than already having pre-formulated responses in your mind. When you are patient and take the time to listen to others, we not only allow give ourselves the opportunity to learn from them, but you also allow the person to be heard.

3. Take a deep breath

If you catch yourself facing adversity, give yourself the space to take a step back and take

5. Practice gratitude

Take the time each day to practice gratitude. By making a list of 5 things you are grateful for from your day, you will start to see the gifts and synchronicities that come your way. VETERANS POST

Services for senior veterans have been expanded, including home-based primary care, veteran-directed care and medical foster homes. The plan is to make these services— 75 home-based primary care teams, 58 medical foster homes and 70 veteran-directed care programs—available at all Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers in the next few years. The purpose of these programs is to allow senior veterans to either delay going into a nursing home and select the care environment that they prefer, or to age in place at home. What they’ve discovered is that veterans who use these services have fewer trips to the emergency room, fewer hospital admissions and fewer stays in nursing homes. Medical foster homes are what you’d imagine: private homes where there is a trained caregiver 24/7. While living at one of these homes, the veteran receives home-based primary care. Let yourself and your partner have some quality time dedicated to yourselves, so both of your stress levels are reduced. 5 When there is a difficult situation at hand, work it out with calmness and tolerance towards the matter. This will produce an effective solution to the problem. Studies show, people who are patient towards their married life tend to have better mental health as compared to those who act out in frustration.

PRESCRIPTION POWER While diet and exercise goals typically spring to mind when people decide to focus on their health and wellness, experts say that forming good habits relating to your pharmacy routine can go far in improving your overall health. Susan Peppers, RPh, vice president, Express Scripts Pharmacy, suggests these goals to make the most of your pharmacy care.

Ask more questions.

Many of us are hesitant to speak up when we have questions about prescribed medications or therapies. Don’t be! Pharmacists have clinical expertise and can play an important role in your whole health.

Never miss a dose.

The best way to see improvement in both chronic and short-term conditions is to take medication as prescribed — the right dose at the right time, in the right way. 18 THE GRAND SEASON • MARCH 2022

Try using a pill container, or a dose reminder or taking your medication as part of your daily routine, such as brushing your teeth. Talk to your pharmacist about the best time to take your medication.

Take your medications safely.

Taking medication the wrong way, or without knowledge of their effects, can be dangerous. Read and understand the instructions printed on your prescription label, so you can be sure you’re taking your medicine exactly as intended. For example, taking certain medications on an empty stomach if you’re supposed to take it with a meal can reduce their effectiveness. You’ll also want to be sure you don’t mix your medication with certain other drugs or

alcohol, or even engage in specific activities, like driving, if the label warns you against doing so.

Clean out your medicine cabinet.

Many people find they’re more likely to take medications properly if they have a well-organized medicine cabinet. Go through and properly dispose of expired medications or those you’re no longer taking.

Check-in with your doctor.

Your health can change, and your prescriptions should change along with it. Schedule time at least once annually to go over everything you’re being prescribed. It’s a good chance to talk to your doctor about what’s working, what’s not and what might need adjustments. WWW.THEGRANDSEASON.COM

To overcome these obstacles, come up with a game plan, including hotels, flights and potential activities more than one month in advance.
