I don’t know about you, but I still struggle with the idea of disappointing those I love. This quote from Doreen Virtue speaks to me, “Boundaries are a part of self-care. They are healthy, normal and necessary.”

As you celebrate this month, I hope you can enjoy each moment with the ones you love, and spend time taking care of your needs.

If your plastic food containers develop an unpleasant odor, never fear: Scrub with a paste of baking soda and lemon juice. Rinse and air-dry.

Boundaries act like invisible lines that help maintain a sense of individuality and mutual respect in a healthy relationship. Setting boundaries in a relationship is a way to cultivate mutual respect and a balanced partnership. Boundaries are guidelines that can help prevent resentment, stress, and emotional fatigue from creeping into your relationship.

To paint a clearer picture, consider a couple where one partner always sacrifices their needs and wants. Over time, this imbalance may lead to increased stress and even resentment, negatively impacting the mental health of both individuals. To avoid that stress and resentment, it’s important to practice healthy boundaries within a relationship. The boundaries you establish will be unique to your relationship, but the following areas are a great place to start a discussion.

Boundary #1: Personal Space and Time

Personal space—both physical and emotional—is not a luxury but a necessity for maintaining your sanity and sense of self. Being glued to your partner 24/7 may seem romantic, but it often leads to a stifling and stressful environment. Balancing “we” time with “me” time helps keep the relationship fresh and gives you the space to grow individually.

Your emotions are your responsibility, and the same holds true for your partner. Setting emotional boundaries means understanding that you can’t be the sole emotional support for someone else, nor can they be that for you. This boundary is crucial for your mental well-being.

Boundary #3: Financial

Money is often cited as a leading cause of stress in relationships. That’s why setting financial boundaries can significantly ease mental stress for both parties. It’s important to have an open dialogue about finances throughout your relationship. Strive to continually discuss financial and generous giving goals.

#4: Social Media and Technology

Let’s face it, the digital world can be intrusive. Having your phone buzz every minute with social media notifications when you’re trying to have dinner with your partner can be stressful and alienating. Set up “no phone zones” or “tech-free times” during the day, especially during meals or other shared activities.

Boundary #5: Communication

While setting boundaries is good, but it’s effective communication that brings these boundaries to life. Being honest about what you can and cannot tolerate is fundamental to maintaining a healthy relationship and mental state. Schedule regular check-ins with your partner to discuss how things are going.

YOU SET YOUR LIMITS

Boundaries are essential to a healthy life. Setting and sustaining boundaries is a skill—a skill that many of us don’t learn. It’s possible to pick up pointers here and there from experience or through watching others set boundaries. But for many of us, boundary-building is a relatively new and challenging concept.

Having healthy boundaries means “knowing and understanding” what your limits are. Below, are some insights into building better boundaries.

1. Name your limits.

You can’t set good boundaries if you’re unsure of where you stand. So, identify your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual limits. Consider what you can tolerate and accept and what makes you feel uncomfortable—those feelings help you identify what your limits are.”

2. Be direct.

With some people, maintaining healthy boundaries doesn’t require a direct and clearcut dialogue. Usually, this is the case if people are similar in their communication styles, views, personalities and general approach to life.

With others, such as those who have a different personality or cultural background, you’ll need to be more direct about your boundaries.

3. Practice self-awareness.

Again, boundaries are all about listening to your feelings and honoring them. If you notice yourself slipping and not sustaining your boundaries, ask yourself: “What’s changed?” or “What is the situation creating that’s making me resentful or stressed?”

4. Be assertive.

Of course, you know that it’s not enough to create boundaries; you actually have to follow through. Even though you know that people aren’t mind readers, you still expect others to know what hurts you.

5. Start small.

Like any new skill, communicating your boundaries takes practice. Start with a small boundary that isn’t threatening to you, and then incrementally increase to more challenging boundaries. Build upon your success, try not to take on something that feels overwhelming.

STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE MIMOSA

INGREDIENTS

10 strawberries

2/3 c. strawberry ice cream

1/2 c. crushed Nilla wafers

10 oz. vanilla vodka

1 bottle Champagne Whipped cream

DIRECTIONS

Run a sliced strawberry around the rim of Champagne flutes. Dip each rim in Nilla crumbs. Into each flute, drop 1 tablespoon strawberry ice cream, then add 1 ounce vodka and top with Prosecco. Top with whipped cream, a sprinkle of Nilla crumbs, and a strawberry for garnish. Serve.

SPRING CHAMPAGNE

INGREDIENTS

1/2 c. pineapple wedges, divided 1 c. orange juice

1 c. pineapple juice 1 bottle champagne

1/4 c orange sanding sugar 1/2 c. sliced strawberries

DIRECTIONS

Run a pineapple wedge around the rim of each glass. Pour sanding sugar into a shallow bowl, then dip top of each glass in sanding sugar. Fill each glass about a quarter full with orange juice, then add pineapple juice until juice comes up about halfway. Top each glass with champagne. Garnish glasses with strawberries and pineapples.

BRUNCH PUNCH

INGREDIENTS

ice

2 c. orange juice

2 c. vodka

2 liter sprite

2 c. pineapple juice

1 bottle prosecco

2 c. strawberries, sliced 2 c. raspberries

1 c. fresh mint leaves, plus more for garnish Sanding sugars, for rims

DIRECTIONS

To a large punch bowl, add ice, Sprite, orange juice, pineapple juice, vodka, Prosecco, strawberries, raspberries and mint leaves and stir to combine. In a small dish of sanding sugar, rim glasses with fresh strawberry and coat rims with sugar. Ladle punch into glasses and garnish with more mint.

AVOID THE GUILT

You may be wondering what exactly are money boundaries? Put simply, they are rules you set in place to balance the relationship between your finances, your loved ones, and yourself. Setting boundaries with our money has the potential to make our lives happier and healthier.

As we grow older, many of us tend to put others’ needs before our own. We often feel obligated to financially take care of our children, grandchildren, or in-laws, because we want them to be secure. However, we shouldn’t take care of our loved ones at our own expense.

Set Your Loved Ones up for Success

Do you feel guilty for setting money boundaries? Then try to think of it this way: taking care of yourself is just another way to take care of your loved ones. You may think that helping your son with the down-payment on his house is the best gift you could give, even if it means placing your own financial needs on the backburner?

However, if you pay off your home, you might be able to avoid moving in with your son later in life. If you pay for life insurance now, your son won’t

go into debt paying for your funeral. You may feel selfish, but by taking care of your own financial needs now, you’re actually reducing the burdens your family has to take on later.

Identifying Your Financial Goals

Financial goals aren’t the same thing as financial boundaries. Think about the goals you want to attain—then consider what boundaries will help you reach those goals. Can you reach your goals without altering how you spend money? If not, it might be time to set some financial boundaries. When family members ask for money, tell them you need a day to think about it, rather than immediately saying “yes.” If you’re setting firm boundaries with other people, sometimes you’ll have to sit down for a big talk. Let’s say your son wants to move back in with you for a year. You could tell him that he can move in rent-free for three months, after which he will need to pay a specific amount in rent and contribute to food and utilities expenses.
