Veterans are victims of cybercrimes at a much higher rate than civilians. And it’s not just veterans, included are military spouses, survivors, activeduty personnel and our families. This is no doubt because of our benefits and the goodies to be had after stealing from us. To tackle the problem, the Department of Veterans Affairs is stepping in and partnering with outside groups like the Cybercrime Support Network (cybercrimesupport.org), whose motto is Recognize, Report and Recover. Over the past five years, veterans have reported cybercrime losses of more than $420 million. The CSN’s mix of initiatives includes ScamSpotter (ScamSpotter.org), with practical consumer advice about how to spot and avoid fraud and scams. Especially for us is Fight Cybercrime (fightcybercrime.org/military). Its crimefighting partners are pretty impressive, and include the Disabled American Veterans and Army Emergency Relief. Look over the site for a resource library for us, law enforcement and businesses.

Feeding the community
Jesse Ramirez, a native Arizonan, is passionate about feeding people in need. Not long after he started the Valley View Community Food Bank, Jesse and his team were feeding 300 people daily in 2007. Today, they are feeding over 540 per-day. About 48% of his clients are senior citizens over 55, and 32% are either children or adults in their 20’s.
Each day, the food bank distributes 6,000 pounds of food. You may ask, where does the food come from? Jesse say’s, “Most of the food is donated from private food drives, churches, Sam’s Club, local scouting groups, private donations, businesses and organizations.”
The main purpose of the Valley View Community Food Bank is to supply people in the community with wholesome food. Jesse says, “When you combine what people have gone through with COVID, unemployment, and higher food costs, the number of families needing assistance continues to grow. In order to keep up with the need, we honestly could use some additional help during Thanksgiving and Christmas.”
If you are interested in helping Jesse and his team meet the need, you can participate in various ways; volunteering at the food bank, private food drives, donating shelf stable foods, canned veggies, fruits, can protein, boxed dinners or by donating money (100% of dollars are spent on needed food).
