October is such an amazing month in Arizona! The evenings are cooling down, and the sunsets are just spectacular.

This month’s issue of The Grand Season focuses on respect. As our country becomes more divided, it seems like we have lost the ability to love and respect those with differing opinions and beliefs.

With Election Day quickly approaching, I want to encourage you to get out and vote. Mid-term elections are critical this year—regardless of your party preference. Here in Arizona, we’re electing a new Governor, so make your voice heard.

I trust you have registered to vote. If you’re unable to cast your ballot in person, contact the Election Services Division at the Secretary of State’s Office at elections@azsos.gov.

Respect is essential for life-long love.

Mutual respect in a marriage is important because it is a sign of trust, support, and the knowledge that both of you love and appreciate the other for who they are. Every successful marriage is based on the foundation of mutual respect for one another. A relationship in which respect is absent will eventually lead to conflicts between a couple.

If you’re looking for specific ways to show respect for your spouse, check out these ideas:

1. Listen attentively to your partner’s needs, desires, and concerns.

2. Show that you notice your spouse’s needs, desires, and concerns by acting on what you discover about your spouse.

3. When your spouse is direct with requests, respond to what he or she asks for and act on those requests in a timely fashion. Leave no room for procrastination; really show up.

4. Speak words of acknowledgment, appreciation, and gratitude not only for what your spouse does, but for who your spouse is.

5. When using humor to lighten up your relationship, be careful to only playfully tease and not to wound with sharp barbs.

6. Only make comparisons to others for the purpose of calling attention to your partner’s strengths and talents.

7. Replace cutting sarcasm with gentle language.

8. Speak directly to your partner, rather than sharing your complaints with others.

9. Support your spouse’s choices whenever you can.

10. Acknowledge how much your spouse contributes to you and your family on the non-material, emotional level.

11. When you make a mistake, apologize as soon as possible.

12. Take responsibility for the ways you hurt your spouse. Learn from your failures, so you don’t continue to harm your relationship.

13. Be quick to offer forgiveness when your spouse makes poor choices.

14. Remind your spouse that you are proud of her or him.

15. Declare your respect for your partner in front of others.

“I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren.

Respect – it’s something we all feel we deserve from other people, but have you ever stopped to ask whether you are respecting yourself?

You may not even realize it, but you could be displaying some of the many signs of disrespect to the person staring at you in the mirror. Ask yourself whether you can relate to any of the following:

You speak poorly of yourself

You are forever playing down your gifts, talents, and desirable qualities, because you just can’t bring yourself to have pride in them.

You put others ahead of yourself

You are a kind and helpful soul, but you will always put the needs of other people

ahead of your own. This can take many forms, but they all come back to the same core principle – you don’t take care of yourself anywhere near as well as you try to take care of others.

You hide your emotions

You see sadness, worry, and vulnerability as weaknesses that ought not to be displayed in the public forum. Likewise, you tame your happiness, joy, and excitement for fear of coming across as arrogant or boastful.

You do not speak up when hurt

If someone inflicts physical or emotional pain upon you, there is a good chance that you will keep quiet instead of standing up for yourself. Perhaps you think you deserve it, or maybe you just believe you’re not strong enough to exert any influence over the situation.

You bite your tongue to avoid conflict

If there is something said that you take issue with, you’d much rather stay silent than risk conflict by disagreeing. In this way, you let others assume your complicit agreement, and you do nothing to try and stand up for your beliefs.

Keep your brain strong.

Committing to living a healthy lifestyle is key to keeping our brains and bodies as sharp as possible throughout adulthood. While change can be a challenge, experts on the topic have some tips on how to overcome common hurdles.

Set a goal (and keep it realistic). Decide on the actions you want to take—and why they’re important to you—is the first step to behavior change. Attainable goals build confidence and momentum.

PUDDING

DIRECTIONS

In a large bowl, whisk together pudding mix, pumpkin, milk, brown sugar, and pumpkin pie spice mix according to package directions. Let sit 5 minutes to thicken. Spoon into 6 small cups. Refrigerate until well chilled and pudding is set, about 1 hour. Top with whipped cream and sprinkle with more pumpkin pie spice mix.

POISON

Combine all ingredients in cocktail shaker, then fill shaker with ice. Shake until contents are mixed and shaker is cold, about 30 seconds. Pour into glass and serve.

WITCHES’

LEMONADE

Fill a tall glass with ice. Pour the Gin and top with sparkling lemonade. Very carefully and slowly pour the curacao into the glass, letting it settle on the bottom. Garnish with a rosemary sprig.

APPLE CIDER SLUSHIES

Ingredients

3 c. apple cider

1 lemon, juiced

1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon

2 mini cinnamon-sugar doughnuts

DIRECTIONS

Pour cider, lemon juice, and cinnamon in a loaf pan, whisking to combine. Freeze for 1 hour. Remove the cider mixture from the freezer and use a fork to scrape the slushy mixture, so it doesn’t turn into a giant ice cube. Once fully scraped and stirred, return it to the freezer for 1 hour more. Remove the cider mixture from the freezer once again, using a fork to scrape and stir it into a consistency like shaved ice. If it’s not frozen enough for your taste, pop it back in the freezer for another 45 minutes. Otherwise, spoon into 2 glasses and garnish each rim with a mini doughnut.

HERE’S A TIP

Loosen tight jeans with a cutting board! First, wash in cold water, then button them around something that’s about an inch wider than the waist, say, a cookie sheet, chair top, cutting board, etc. Air dry. It’s magical.

Lemon juice mixed together with coarse salt makes an inexpensive copper cleaner.

You can use a soft cloth dampened with vinegar to clean greasy stains off of suede shoes. This also works on patent leather.

Respect is an important attribute for any relationship to be successful, but what is respect, exactly? How do you show respect for others? Here are some ways you can show respect for those in your life.

LISTEN

Listening to what another person has to say is a basic way to respect them. Everyone wants to have their say. Everyone wants to feel that they’re being listened to. Whether they have something profound to say is not the point. People want to be heard. When you give another person your time, your focus and your ear, you validate them.

AFFIRM

When you affirm someone, you’re giving evidence that they matter. That they have value. That they’re important. And that they’re worthy of respect.

BE KIND

Kindness is an expression of respect. Respect for the fact that someone else is simply in need. We have all been in need. And what a relief it was when someone showed you kindness. Kindness is a tangible way of showing respect.

BE POLITE

It’s difficult to witness the decline of politeness in the modern world. Whether it’s on the highway, at the grocery store, in the parking lot, on the athletic field, on Facebook, or in political rhetoric – polite discourse and interaction is rapidly becoming a lost art. Yet, it’s so easy to be polite. An act of politeness can literally change a person’s day.

BE THANKFUL

When someone does something for you that’s beneficial. Or, they say something to you that’s helpful in some way. Or, they honestly affirm you in some way that’s important to you. You should thank them. It’s not so much that they need to be thanked. It’s that people want to feel that what they’ve done has made a difference. When there is no thankfulness for something we’ve done, or even for who we are, we feel a lack of respect.
