ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE
TIPS ON TIPPING
Helpful guidance for showing appreciation to those who provide great service all year.
Now is the time to thank those who provide personalized services, or take care of things we can’t, with a kind note of thanks accompanied by a gift card or cash to spend at their discretion. For those you see weekly, such as a maid, gardener, hair stylist, personal care giver, UPS driver, trash collector or personal shopper, place the note and gift
in an envelope with their name on it, and give it to them face to face or tape it in a place they’ll find it. For those you don’t see weekly, mail a note of thanks with a gift card to show your appreciation. Curious about an appropriate amount? Here are a few suggested amounts for those who serve you. Hair Stylist—Amount of a haircut/color Housekeeper—Amount of one cleaning Mail Carrier—Any amount less than $20 Trash Collector—$10/person Personal Care Asst.—Amount of a week of care Pet Sitter—Amount of a week’s worth of care If finances are tight, you can’t go wrong with a handwritten note and any token of appreciation.
WELCOME DR. BOZENA WOLNIAK We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Bozena Wolniak into our practice. After purchasing a home in the area, she is ready to move out of the snows of Chicago and become a part of our family in Sun City West. Dr. Wolniak graduated from the Washington University School of Dental Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri in 1987. She and her husband, Jack, have a practice in the suburbs of Chicago. Dr. Wolniak brings a wealth of experience as well as a very gentle chairside manner. She can provide her patients with complete dental care and has demonstrated her skill in all aspects of dental treatment. Our staff and patients appreciate her soft, non-aggressive approach, her attention to detail and her sincerity and warmth. She would love for you to stop by to say “hello.” When you call to schedule an appointment, be sure to ask about any special promotion we might be offering for new patients who would like to meet and be treated by Dr. Wolniak. Don’t wait! Promotions will be for a limited time only. Sincerely, Dr. Jack Luftman and Staff “I am extremely happy to work in a dental practice where the number one priority is the highest standard of care and the patients comfort and satisfaction. I am lucky to be working with Dr. Luftman and his dedicated staff.” — Dr. Bozena Wolniak

ANTIQUE ANSWERS By Larry Cox
Q: My mother collected cookbooks during the 1930s and ‘40s. She has the 1943 edition of Joy of Cooking by Irma S. Rombauer. I understand that this particular edition is quite collectible. A neighbor has offered me $25 for it. Should I sell?— Lydia, Chesterfield, Missouri A: Don’t sell it. Joy of Cooking was originally published in 1931, compiled by Irma Rombauer and illustrated by her daughter, Marion. It was a rather straight-forward collection of recipes with a German-American twist. This cookbook, simply put, is one of the most famous and significant cookbooks in American history. The 1943 edition is especially interesting. Irma began revising her cookbook in 1942, keeping in mind that American cooking had changed since the start of World War II. Ration cards and shortages were commonplace. Her 1943 edition even featured meat substitutes, using leftover foods and sugarless desserts. I have seen several copies of this edition sell in the $75-$150 range.

And save your wallet this holiday season The holiday season is often dubbed “the most wonderful time of the year,” but for many Americans, it can be a stressful time financially.
leading to a case of buyer’s remorse come
The National Retail Federation predicts a 4.1 percent increase in sales this year, with the average American set to spend an estimated $786 in the following categories: $459.87—gifts for family $80.00—gifts for friends $26.03—colleagues $30.43—others
January. Regions Bank, one of the largest U.S. banks, has advice for consumers on how to prepare financially for the holiday shopping season.
Whether shopping online or in-store, there’s often a temptation to spend too much on gifts,
YOU STOP WORKING AT 65. YOUR MONEY STOPS WORKING AT 65. THIS COULD BE A PROBLEM. A funny thing happened on the way to the finish line. Because whatever retirement used to be, it isn’t anymore. So this is our commitment to you. We want to ensure that you have the resources to do what you want next in life. We will work as diligently to help grow and protect your money as you did earning it. Our unique culture of
independence gives each Raymond James financial advisor the freedom to offer objective, unbiased advice so they can meticulously tailor a long-term plan based solely on the financial well-being and specific goals of each client. It’s time to find out what a Raymond James financial advisor can do for you. LIFE WELL PLANNED.
Begin With the Golden Rule Spending on gifts shouldn’t exceed more than 1.5 percent of your annual income. Use this as a guide to determine how much to set aside to spend on gifts for your friends and family—and stick to it. Separate and Delegate Create a separate account to fund gift purchases and make regular contributions from your primary checking account on a weekly, or monthly basis. Only Buy What You Can Truly Afford Never leave home without a list of what you intend to buy, and be sure you have the money needed to cover your purchases at the store. Use Timing to Your Advantage While things like airline tickets should be booked far in advance, other items—toys in particular—often drop in price during the first two weeks in December. Sometimes it pays to wait, so be sure to check for deals before you head out shopping.

Jesse Ramirez, a native Arizonan, is passionate about feeding people in SHARE need. Not long after he started the Valley View Community food-bank, & CARE Jesse and his team were feeding 300 people daily in 2007. “He says, 48% of his clients are senior citizens over 65, and 32% are either children or adults in their 20s.” Each week the food bank distributes 34,000 pounds of food. You, may ask, Where does the food come from? Jesse say’s most of the food is donated from private food drives, churches, Sam’s Club, local scouting groups, private donations, businesses and organizations. Each food box contains fresh produce, can goods, beans, rice, pasta, meat and dry foods. Unlike other foodbanks, Jesse says, “We don’t charges clients a fee for the boxes, they are distributed for free to those in need.” The main purpose of the Valley View Community Food Bank is to supply people in the community with wholesome food.” Jesse says, “When you combine current unemployment rates with higher food costs, the number of families needing assistance continues to grow. In order to keep up with the need, we honestly could use some additional help.” If you are interested in helping Jesse’s team meet the need, you can participate in various ways including, volunteering at the food bank or donate food (no dented cans) or money. For more information, contact Valley View Community Food Bank at 623-933-3358.

20 SAFE DRIVING TIPS
AUTO TALK By Derrick Grant
The ability to drive is an important element an maintaining one’s independence.
As we age, it may get more challenging to drive. These safe driving tips may help those who don’t want to lose their freedom behind the wheel. 1. Avoid driving at night if you have trouble with your vision, and don’t tint your windows. 2. Avoid driving during periods of high traffic (typically during morning, lunch and evening commute times). 3. K eep your windshield, headlights and mirror clean to improve visibility. 4. Raise your seat high enough so you have a clear view of the road. Sit on a small pillow if necessary. 5. L imit distracting noise inside the vehicle. This includes the radio, conversations with passengers and use of cell phones. 6. Watch for flashing lights of emergency vehicles if you have difficulty hearing.
7. Keep a safe distance between you and the car ahead so you have ample time to brake if necessary. 8. A llow adequate stopping distances. 9. K eep windshield wiper blades in proper working condition. 10. If possible, drive a car with an automatic transmission. 11. Get periodic vision and hearing tests. Get hearing aids and new glasses when needed. 12. T ake a defensive driving course. Some insurance policies may offer price discounts when individuals take these courses. 13. Carefully read medication labels to see if they may impair driving skills. 14. Don’t drive if you’re tired, lightheaded or stressed. 15. Avoid driving during inclement weather. 16. Use other transportation services (taxis, buses) if you’re unsure of your ability to drive safely. 17. Drive on familiar streets, and limit trips to those close to home. 18. A lways wear your seat belt. 19. Keep your headlights on at all times. 20. Talk with your doctor if you have concerns about continuing to drive. Visit elderguru.com to learn more about Derrick Grant and his advice.

YMCA Programs for Vets Did you know there are special programs at the YMCA just for veterans?
BRAND NEW SHOWROOM!
Minutes away from your house. Hundreds of samples to choose from. Come see us in Surprise at the intersection of Grand & Reems
The alliance between the armed forces and the YMCA goes all the way back to 1861, when YMCA members provided relief services to the military in local encampments. An expanded agreement pairs Veterans Benefits Administration regional offices and Veterans Health Administration facilities with YMCAs to make sure veterans are connected with resources in their communities. While not every YMCA site has the program, the variety of benefits offered at many is quite broad. Typical programs include health and fitness, aquatics, camping, family, child care, arts, community development, sports, diabetes prevention programs, youth afterschool, preschool enrichment, aerobics and indoor track, cross training and more. To find a YMCA near to you, visit www.ymca. net/military-outreach, scroll down and enter a zip code to locate the nearest participating YMCA to you.

A BETTER YOU
TAKE BACK YOUR DAY These 3 steps can help you make your day more efficient.
Now that you’ve retired, do you find yourself busier than you ever were before retirement? For many, it seems like time is passing by faster than ever before, and that each new day seems busier than the previous. Want to Take Back Your Day? It’s possible by focusing on making yourself more efficient. Here are three tips to help improve your daily efficiency, accomplish your goals, and even find some extra free time. Make a Plan Organize the upcoming day the night before. Make a list of everything you have to do and check these items against one another. Can two trips be combined? Are you prioritizing the most important things first? The better you can plan out your schedule, the more efficient your day will be.
Set Priorities You don’t have time to do it all and maybe you don’t have to. Sit down and make a list of every social or professional obligation in your life. Once you’ve made the list, look at it and evaluate how important the items are to you or your family. If you find an obligation that’s not essential, take it off your “to-do” list and save your time for the more important things. Limit Multitasking Many people look to multitasking as an efficiency solution, but doing several things at once means it will take longer to accomplish each one. Instead of trying to do several things at once, focus on the most important thing, accomplish it and move on with the encouragement of success. It can be hard to explore every opportunity on your bucket list, but if you focus on accomplishing one goal at a time, you may find you are much more efficient and effective—leaving time to explore new opportunities and interests.

COUCH THEATER By Sam Struckhoff
Now Out on DVD and Blu-Ray! Mississippi Grind (R) Gerry (Ben Mendelsohn) has done a whole lot of gambling, and very little winning. Divorced, deluded and deep in debt to a tenacious loan shark (Alfre Woodard), poor Gerry pins his hopes on a younger, better player, Curtis (Ryan Reynolds). Gerry convinces Curtis to join him on a trip down the Mississippi River placing bets and flipping cards at every stop. Gerry is an addict with tragedy in his bones, but truly believes success and happiness is just a good streak away. 90 Minutes in Heaven (PG-13) Based on a real-life memoir, pastor Don Piper (Hayden Christensen) was in a head-on collision with a semi-truck on a narrow country bridge. He was declared dead by first responders due to such severe injuries. Through his recovery, Piper experienced tremendous emotion and physical pain. Piper says he saw heaven in all its glory, only to be ripped back to earth and returned to his broken body.

MOMENTS IN HISTORY
Dec. 6, 1917— A Belgian steamer and French freighter, both loaded with ammunition, explode in Canada’s Halifax Harbor, leveling part of the town and killing nearly 1,600 people and injuring some 8,000. The ships were carrying 8 million tons of TNT intended for use in World War I. Dec. 5, 1945— Five U.S. Navy torpedobombers take off from Florida on a routine training mission over the Atlantic Ocean. The squadron leader later reported that his compass had failed and his position was unknown, and a rescue aircraft was dispatched with a 13-man crew. No trace of the 27 crewmen or six aircraft was ever found. Dec. 4, 1956— The “Million Dollar Quartet” convenes at Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, in an historic impromptu jam session. Present were Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley. A tape recorded that day is not discovered until 1981.

MUST PLAY GOLF COURSES IN THE VALLEY OF THE SUN
adapted from Golf magazine
Now that your friends and family are visiting from near and far, it’s the perfect time (and excuse) to play some of the best courses around. Troon North (troonnorthgolf.com): Still the king of the Scottsdale public “must-plays” thanks to a pair of courses that dish out cacti, arroyos, rock outcroppings and stunning vistas of Pinnacle Peak and the surrounding mountains. We-Ko-Pa Golf Club (wekopa.com): The two layouts on tribal land owned by the Ft. McDowell Yavapai nation just east of Scottsdale rival any in the area. The Cholla course, a Scott Miller design, has stunning scenery and holes that zigzag artfully through canyons, over ridges and down mountain slopes. Southern Dunes Golf Club (golfsoutherndunes.com): Located 25 minutes south of Phoenix’s Sky Harbor Intl. Airport, Southern Dunes is a big, bold, 7,300-yard layout and possibly Lee Schmidt’s and Brian Curley’s

very best work (Fred Couples consulting). The Boulders (theboulders.com): Jay Morrish sculpted two superb courses from the prehistoric rocks that define this property in the town of Carefree. Grayhawk Golf Club (grayhawkgolf.com): This facility didn’t invent the “country club for a day,” theme, but may have perfected it in the ‘90s, when Phil’s Grill (named for Phil Mickelson) was a beehive for pros. Gold Canyon (gcgr.com): Gold Canyon Golf Resort’s Dinosaur Mountain, a Ken Kavanaugh design, should be mentioned in any discussion of Scottsdale’s best layouts. The mountains make it worth the drive, no matter where you’re staying. Talking Stick (talkingstickgolfclub.com): Though their flat fairways provide less drama than many Valley courses, you won’t find a more artfully crafted set of bunkers in town. Talking Stick sports a pair of Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw-designed tracks on tribal land, complete with mountain views but thankfully no houses.

FIVE TIPS FOR STRESS-FREE HOLIDAY TRAVEL Americans took more than 11 million flights during the 2014 holiday season, and many experts believe that number is on track to grow this year. If you’re worried about long lines and flight delays, these tips can make your experience more enjoyable. TIP 1—PACK WISELY Even the most seasoned travelers can optimize the packing process. Shipping gifts will save space and help you avoid additional bag fees. If you do pack gifts, keep them unwrapped as the TSA may need to access them during screening. TIP 2—SKIP THE LINE Many people know printing their boarding pass or downloading a digital copy to their phone may help expedite flight check-in. Fewer people take advantage of opportunities to reduce time spent at security and customs checkpoints. If you’re traveling domestically, sign up for TSA PreCheck at www.tsa.gov for faster security screening. TIP 3—STAY CONNECTED As the number of travelers with smart phones continues to rise, mobile applications are becoming more popular travel tools. Take a few minutes to download the apps most relevant to you. Also, consider purchasing a power bank to help ensure you have enough juice to wait out flight delays. TIP 4—STAY HEALTHY Nothing ruins a trip like getting sick, so optimize your health before your trip by getting sleep, drinking water and exercising — all help boost your immune system. If you’re over 55 consider a seasonal flu vaccine. TIP 5—PROTECT YOURSELF Consider purchasing travel insurance. It’s important travelers prepare for unexpected events, especially during the holidays, such as trip cancellation, interruption, lost or stolen luggage, and emergency medical issues. Single-shot coffee makers like Keurig are popular, but the inventor of the K-Cup coffee pods doesn’t use them himself. John Sylvan says, “I don’t have one. They’re kind of expensive to use. It’s not like drip coffee is tough to make.” Charles Dickens was forced to work at the age of 11, pasting labels on shoe polish bottles in a factory. Soon after, his father was put in debtors’ prison, and when his mother and siblings went to live with him there; young Charles was left to live on the streets and fend for himself. It’s not surprising, then, that after Dickens achieved great success as a writer, he was an ardent campaigner for children’s rights. FOR ADVERTISING INFORMATION CALL (623) 594-1630

2. Put the graham crackers and 1 tbs. of the sugar substitute in bowl of a food processor and grind until fine. Add butter and 2 tbs. water, and pulse until moistened. Press into the bottom of pan. Bake until golden brown, 10-12 minutes. Cool completely.
KITCHEN DIVA By Angela Shelf Medearis
LOW-FAT PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE Nonstick cooking spray 8 sheets low-fat honey graham crackers 2/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar substitute or stevia 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted 12 oz. one-third-less-fat cream cheese (room temp.) 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 2/3 cup low-fat 2 percent Greek-style plain yogurt 2 large eggs, at room temperature 2 large egg whites, at room temperature 1 (15 oz) can pumpkin puree 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice 1 tablespoon vanilla extract Low-fat whipped topping, optional 1. Fill a roasting pan about half full with water and place on the lower rack to help prevent cheesecake from cracking. Heat oven to 325. Coat a 9-inch springform pan with nonstick cooking spray.
3. Combine the cream cheese, brown sugar, the remaining 1/3 cup sugar substitute and salt in a large bowl. Beat with an electric mixer on medium until smooth and fluffy. Add yogurt, eggs and egg whites, reduce the mixer speed to low and beat until blended. Add the pumpkin, flour, pumpkin pie spice and vanilla. Beat until just combined. Stir with a spatula. 4. Pour the batter over the crust and rap the pan against the countertop. Place the cheesecake on the center rack in the oven. Bake until just set and the center wiggles slightly, 50 to 60 minutes. Turn the oven off and crack the door open. Let sit in the oven for 15 minutes, and then transfer to a wire rack to cool. Run a thin sharp knife between the cheesecake and the pan to release the sides. Cool completely, and then chill until cold, at least 4 hours or overnight. 5. Before serving, remove the cheesecake from the refrigerator and release the sides of the pan. Allow the cheesecake to come to room temperature, 30-60 minutes. Top with low-fat whipped topping, if desired.

SENIOR NEWS
Eating more fish was associated with greater cortical thickness. Based on these, researchers concluded that even these two diet adjustments had a positive benefit as part of the Mediterranean diet.
MEDITERRANEAN DIET MAKES BRAIN YOUNGER
The difference in two groups (those who adhered to a Mediterranean diet versus those who didn’t) was the same as aging five years. The average brain volume was 13 percent larger, which is significant.
The Mediterranean Diet Has Been in the News for Years. Some of us, however, still aren’t really sure if it offers any real benefits. Now we have a new piece of the puzzle.
This isn’t the first time the benefits to the brain have been studied. In 2010, a similar study concluded that the Mediterranean diet can help avoid damage to the parts of the brain that deal with thinking and memory.
In a recent study supported by the NIH, participants experienced less brain atrophy after adhering to that type of diet, resulting in loss of fewer brain cells and maintaining cognition.
Ask your medical provider whether you should add these types of foods to your diet and stay away from the more harmful ones.
The Mediterranean-type diet consists of low intake of dairy, poultry, meat and alcohol, and a higher intake of fruit, fish, cereal, vegetables and fats that are monounsaturated (such as olive oil).
For more information, search online for “Mediterranean diet.” Helpful websites to research the diet include www.mayoclinic.org, www.heart.org and www.webmd.com.
A Few Specifics Eating less meat resulted in larger total brain volume.

SOCIAL HOUR
OVERCOMING LIFE’S OBSTACLES
When life gets tough, don’t focus on despair.
By allowing endurance and perseverance to rule the day, you can achieve more of what you set out to do. Sometimes it can seem impossible to overcome life’s obstacles, but you can often draw on the strength of others for inspiration and helpful advice, especially those who have gracefully dealt with difficult trials of their own. Author and musician Vanessa Leigh Hoffman first learned of the power of her own strength as a teenager when she was undergoing chemotherapy while attending school and writing and recording music. “One can conquer anything he or she puts a focus on,” says Hoffman, who over the course of her life endured both stage three Hodgkin’s disease and a car accident that left her in a coma for close to two weeks.“ When your face unexpected challenges in your life, Hoffman offers these tools to help you face your fears.
Be Inspired Allow your negative experiences to be your inspiration. Or allow them to inspire others. It’s hard to see the light when you’re traveling through darkness, so look for stories of those who have conquered overwhelming odds. Don’t Be Disheartened Whether it’s discouraging feedback from your boss or a bleak prognosis from a doctor, don’t let the words of experts define the scope of your potential—you are in charge of your future. You can be or do anything you set your mind to. Have Goals It’s easy to let your goals fall by the wayside, particularly when life’s challenges prove time consuming, distracting and demoralizing. Embracing your passions will help you stay motivated to follow through on your dreams. To learn more about Hoffman and her book, Treasure, visit www.VanessaLeighHoffman.com

CREATIVE CORNER
Mason Jars are all the rage this year. If you’re looking for some cute (and easy) gift ideas for your neighbors or friends, buy several mason jars and let the fun begin. DIY GOURMET PRETZEL KIT: This requires three small mason jars and one medium-sized jar. Fill one of the small jars with a high-quality chocolate candy in milk chocolate, semi-sweet or white chocolate. Fill the medium-size jar with pretzels. In the remaining two jars, place decorative items, such as sprinkles, nuts or bits of crushed candy canes. DIY HOT CHOCOLATE: You’ll need one large mason jar, premium hot cocoa mix, chocolate chips, marshmallows and crushed candy canes. Add the hot chocolate mix first, and then layer the remaining ingredients, filling the jar. Create a festive tag with simple instructions to heat and enjoy the hot chocolate mix. Attaching the tag and a red or green bow will add a festive look.

$100 GIFT CARD TO SUN CITY PET MARKET! Lidia Cobal, Sun City
To ensure a safe, enjoyable season for your four-legged friends, keep these pet safety tips in mind. Be smart about stocking stuffers. When filling your pet’s stocking, don’t get carried away. Avoid items that have stuffing that pups can get into and eat. Don’t celebrate with a bang. Fireworks are popular on New Year’s Eve, but many animals are frightened by loud noises. To shield your pet, close the curtains and play familiar background noises to soothe them.
and can cause digestion problems, so avoid them both. Keep an eye on doggiedoors. When guests arrive, doors will be opening and closing constantly. If worried about a pet jail break, download a pet tracking app like Tagg, which attaches to your pet’s collar.

Take the stress out of laundry with these timesaving tips!
Laundry doesn’t have to be a dreaded chore. With these effective and efficient tricks, you can rest easy knowing your laundry will turn out like you want.
Brighten your home with natural light SALE!
Separate Clothes Spending time separating clothes will make a huge difference in how long your clothes last. Sorting clothes by color and texture, using the correct amount of detergent and reading laundry care labels can help keep your favorite articles of clothing looking fresh.
Ad Deco d a rat Fixt u ive re!
Prevent Fading Always wash clothes inside out to preserve colors— this is especially important for dark clothes, like jeans. To keep your bright colored fabrics from fading, try tossing one cup of salt into the washing machine with your load. For whites, add one cup of white vinegar to a load during the rinse cycle. Keep Your Clothes Looking Their Best Help your outfits live up to their stylish expectations by keeping them freshly ironed. Before you begin pressing, set the iron to the correct temperature. You can find this information on the tag. Whether you’re wearing shirts, slacks, skirts or dresses, make them look extra sharp by using Faultless Premium Spray Starch. Troubleshoot Tough Stains The key to successful stain removal is to fight back before it sets in. From vinegar and table salt to club soda and lemon juice, many stains can be eliminated using basic household products. Do-It-Yourself Dryer Balls When drying towels or bedding, ditch the standard dryer sheets in favor of tennis balls. Using one or two tennis balls as dryer balls helps evenly circulate air in the dryer to keep fabrics soft and reducing the dry time. Plus, tennis balls are long lasting—eliminating waste and expense. PAIN Doesn’t Have to Be a Four-Letter Word NovaSpine Pain Institute Is Committed to Helping You Manage Pain Dr. Clifford Baker Living with chronic pain is a reality many people have just learned to accept—especially if they’ve spent years trying to find a physician who listens and desires to solve the root problem, rather than just mask the pain with pills, patches or creams. Let’s face it, living in Arizona there are plenty of pain clinics where the practitioners are more than willing to make big promises to relieve pain but don’t have the knowledge, tools or resources to provide a different outcome. The physicians at NovaSpine Pain Institute are different—really different. Dr. Clifford Baker and Dr. David Tom established NovaSpine Pain Institute to provide a center of excellence for spine, arthritis care and chronic pain management. Every doctor in the practice focuses on compassionate, comprehensive care that’s specific to each patient’s unique condition. If you’ve lived with chronic pain for any amount of time, you know that finding a personalized care plan that fits your needs and lifestyle can be exhausting and frustrating. Dr. Baker says, “We truly want to help our patients live their lives to the fullest, and be able to achieve a better quality of life that allows them to be active, despite the conditions that may have kept them on the sidelines for years.” According to one patient, “Dr. Baker is amazing because he really listens and takes the time to understand his patients. I highly recommend him.” Every physician at the NovaSpine Pain Institute has been fellowship-trained in all aspects of spine,

arthritis and pain management, giving them the distinction of being ACGME Board-Certified Pain Management physicians. This honor is important for patients to understand. While many physicians practice pain management, most of them are not board certified and have not gone through the rigorous standards that are required by ACGME Board. Dr. Baker says, “We are committed to caring for our patients, and continually look for ways to meet their evolving pain management needs. Right now, we are going to nursing homes and working with home health providers to provide care to those who can’t come to one of our offices. While this is time-consuming, we are passionate about providing dynamic care to our patients wherever they’re located.” NovaSpine Pain Institute utilizes state of the art facilities to provide cutting edge techniques in pain management. They treat a wide variety of problems including sciatica, neck pain, hip, knee and shoulder pain due to arthritis, peripheral neuropathy, compression fractures and fibromyalgia. If you’re tired of pain, give NovaSpine a call today to schedule an appointment within one week and see how they can help you get back to living the life you want to live. CONSIDERING KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY?
Customized Knee Implants Offer Advantages to Patients of All Ages By 2030, the number of people turning to knee replacement surgery to end pain and regain mobility will likely increase to 3.5 million annually, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. For many patients, recovery from knee replacement surgery is painful and slow, and the results are often not what people expect. Multiple clinical studies have found that on average one in five patients who have a knee replacement are dissatisfied with the result because of pain after surgery or because their new knee feels unnatural. Seventy-two-year-old Ohio resident Tedd Boomershine went from running daily to having trouble walking and completing day to day tasks. When the pain became so severe it was debilitating, he decided to look into
replacement surgery for both of his knees. His doctor told him about his options, including a customized implant from ConforMIS, Inc. called iTotal® that is now available for total knee replacements. He liked the idea that the implant would be specifically designed to fit his anatomy based on a CT scan of his knees. “I had no second thoughts about surgery at all. I wanted to get back to my active lifestyle and enjoy my evening walks with my dog, Stella, again,” says Boomershine. “Two weeks after my bilateral surgery with the ConforMIS customized knees, I was walking without the assistance of a cane or a walker and I was able to drive. Now after eight months, my knees are pain free and have total flexibility, my legs are straighter, my stride is better and I no longer have lower back pain. The best part is that I have been able to resume my evening walks.” To learn more about this exciting new technology and read real life testimonials from patients who have found relief and experienced real life success with their customized knee implant, please visit www.conformis.com.

FAMILY FUN
CONNECT THE DOTS
This holiday season bridge the generation gap between you and your grandchildren.
As the holidays approach, take a few moments to think about the time you’ll have with your grandchildren. While their attitudes, actions or appearance may be worlds away from what you expected, you can bridge the gap between generations by being prepared ahead of time. Background Check Find out what your grandchildren like to do. During the toddler and early elementary school years, most kids love playing games and exploring the world. But as they age, screen time absorbs their time and attention more. To get to know the teens in your life, plan a trip to the mall, arcade or local sporting events. Child Proof Your Home If your family is planning to stay with you, think about putting away things you cherish and placing them out of toddler reach. If your grandchildren are a little older, make sure your Wi-Fi and cable channels are
working. Find out when family members can use the community amenities. Nothing is more frustrating than arriving at the pool only to find it’s Adult Swim. Stock the Pantry Find out what types of items they’ll want to have in your refrigerator, freezer and pantry. Regardless of their age, great snacks and chilled drinks go a long way to getting your grandkids spending more time talking with you at the kitchen table. Create Conversations Place jars around house filled with questions you would ask to get to know someone. Fill other jars with questions your grandkids can ask about you. Make sure the questions are open ended (meaning they can’t be answered with yes or no). Avoid asking teens about grades and relationships. Rather, ask questions about interests, activities and future opportunities. Chill The typical reality of spending holidays with family is that at some point, everyone will need a break from each other and the chaos of group think. Don’t be afraid to nap or go for a walk. Your family will be there when you wake or return, and you will have given them a welcome opportunity to put their head down to check the status of their life online.

WHAT’S NEW
WHAT TO ASK BEFORE BUYING A STAIR-LIFT
There are many options to consider if you’re looking at installing a stair-lift in your home.
As the population of the United States ages, home stair-lifts are becoming increasingly popular. The installation of a stair-lift allows many older adults who have difficulty with stairs but are otherwise in good health to remain in their homes and retain their independence. Today’s stair-lifts are quiet, relatively inexpensive, and can be installed without any structural damage to the home or decor. If you are considering purchasing a stair-lift, however, keep these questions in mind to help ensure that you get the best product and right fit for your home and health needs. Does It Fit? Choose a stair-lift that is available in a range of options to accommodate straight, curved, and outdoor stairways. Seek out stair-lifts with a modular design that allows for quick and easy installation with no damage or changes to the home.
What Type of Customer Service Is Available After Installation? Find out the stair-lift company’s policies on maintenance and follow-up services for the products. Look for companies available 7 days a week to respond to any concerns you may have. What Are the Safety Features? The latest technology of the best stair-lifts includes safety features such as sensors on the foot platform that will stop the lift when triggered. Is It Easy to Use? Consider who will be using the stair-lift. Look for models with light touch controls designed for individuals with limited dexterity because of arthritis or other problems. How Long Is the Wait to Install the Stair-Lift? Companies offering a modular design in stair-lift technology can respond to an order and install a stairlift in hours rather than weeks. For more information and answers to your questions about choosing a stair-lift for your home, visit www.acornstairlifts.com.

TOO BUSY FOR A WORKOUT?
Try these ideas to boost your health in five minutes or less You know those days when your normal schedule gets thrown out the window? You may be tired, overrun or not feeling 100 percent, let alone have the energy to concentrate on your health.
Create an Energy Boost With a Healthy Snack Think of food as fuel for your body. When you’re busy or don’t feel well, don’t forget to pack snacks to keep you nourished through the day. • A protein and powdered greens shake is the perfect quick snack or lunch. • Cut up veggies and store them in the refrigerator. • Make a 3-ingredient salad. All you need is lettuce, a protein, and another veggie.
• C all someone in your support network for encouragement. Although these may seem like minor tips, these small wins can help you on your journey toward a healthier way of life.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

LIVE HAPPY
SMART TIPS FOR GIFT-GIVING THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
.
Before racing out to the mall to pick up an oversized reindeer sweater for Aunt Sally and a set of drums for your 4-year-old nephew (fun for him, not so much for his parents), here are a few helpful holiday shopping thoughts based on the science of happiness. The Gift of Happiness Scientifically, the greatest predictor of happiness is, by far, social support—the breadth, depth and meaning in your relationships. So consider giving gifts that are activities, like a special evening at the local ice rink complete with hot chocolate and marshmallows. The key is to use these moments to really connect more deeply than normally. This reminds our brains of the deep social support that fuels our own happiness, as well as theirs. Encourage Savoring The difference between momentary pleasure and long-term positive memory is based on the ability to savor, or mentally return to, an event or feeling.
A gift that causes a spike in happiness at the moment but that you can’t remember even a week later is analogous to going on a fantastic vacation that you won’t recall. When shopping this season, think of gifts that will continue to benefit the recipient. For example, for your spouse, you could buy a personalized pillow with important dates in your relationship that will literally help that person savor special moments every time he or she sees it. The key is to pick a present that will continue to focus the recipient’s attention on positive, happy moments. Receiving Is as Important as Giving We’ve all heard that it’s better to give than receive, but the saying misses an important corollary: How you receive matters (a lot) to the giver’s happiness. If you receive well, your reaction to a gift can actually be a gift in and of itself. The problem is that many of us can’t receive gifts without our brains producing negative thoughts such as, “I’m not worthy of this present” or “Now I feel indebted to her.” Think about it: We’re happier when others are excited about our gifts and respond with joy and gratitude. By subtly changing our thoughts of guilt to “I am so grateful to her not only for the present, but also the friendship it represents,” we fuel greater levels of happiness for both the giver and ourselves.

Restoring Confidence One Smile at a Time Geneva 2000 Dental & Denture Improves Far More Than Appearances Your smile is one of the first things people notice, but finding the confidence to show it while wearing dentures can be challenging. Let Geneva 2000 Dental & Denture Centre in Sun City West help you regain confidence with custom-fitted dentures and implants that look and feel as natural as your own teeth! Trevor W. Neate, owner of Geneva 2000 Dental & Denture Centre, Adhikar Dhakal, a Board Certified Denturist, and Dr. Brent Bentley, DMD, have been serving dental needs in Arizona for many years. “Geneva 2000 is unique in the way it mirrors natural teeth,” says Linda Rizzo, Practice Manager. “Unlike other dentures, Geneva 2000 uses different-shaped teeth for men and women to ensure that tooth size and shape are as close to natural teeth as possible. Our mission is to create the finest full and partial dentures available—whether they’re implant-retained or not. We personally sculpture each denture for our patients, using the highest standards of technology.” Geneva 2000 offers both implant-supported and non-implant supported dentures. Implant-supported dentures are a growing trend due to the numerous advantages they offer. Implant supported dentures are widely regarded by the profession as the standard of care in Arizona. Denture implants provide patients with improved confidence since they no longer fear the embarrassment that a denture might slip out of place when they eat, talk or laugh. “Implant-supported dentures are more comfortable for patients,” says Linda. “Without the sliding associated with traditional dentures, there’s less irritation of gum tissue, which can cause pain or canker sores. There’s also no need for messy adhesives. Even speech is improved because the wearer can relax and speak more clearly.

Denture implants can also help patients eat better. The natural feel of implanted dentures allows for a more normal diet that still includes crunchy or hard foods. Since the upper dentures don’t cover the mouth’s palate, food can even taste better. Geneva 2000 offers a free consultation to determine if you’re a good candidate for upper and lower implants. “We have an on-site dental lab located right in our office, so unlike many other facilities, we don’t send our work to an outside lab. That’s a great benefit to patients, ensuring better accuracy and efficiency.” Dr. Brent Bentley is the on-staff dentist at Geneva 2000 with many years experience in restorative dentistry. Dr. Bentley offers prospective patients free consultations, exams, x-rays, and second opinions with no obligation! His goal is to solve problems in an understanding, respectful and empathetic manner. An initial appointment is an ideal way to meet the team, learn about treatment options and ask questions. If you’re ready to upgrade your smile or are struggling with your existing dentures, call Geneva 2000 Dental & Denture Centre at (623) 977-9800 to attend a free implant seminar and learn more. Refreshments provided! The office is located at 13540 GENEVA 2000 W. Camino Del Sol #3 Dental & Denture Centre in Sun City West. WWW.THEGRANDSEASON.COM
AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION
SURVEY SAYS AMERICANS DON’T HESITATE TO TRAVEL WHEN SICK Steps to protect yourself
A recent Crowdtap survey of more than 1,000 people, conducted by Robitussin, revealed some interesting tidbits about holiday travel and how Americans handle germs. While the majority (82 percent) worry about getting sick during holiday travels, only 48 percent said they would reconsider traveling if they were sick or felt they were getting sick, and only 35 percent would actually cancel their plans. Sixty-eight percent said their own cold or flu has totally ruined a family holiday gathering and 21 percent said the illness of a family member has spoiled a holiday get-together. “The holidays aren’t just the season of giving gifts and cheer, they’re also the season of giving germs,” says Dr. Charles Gerba, a microbiologist and professor at the Univ. of Arizona. “When people block a cough by holding a hand over their nose or mouth, they’re actually concentrating the virus on their hands. Those hands then touch seatbelts, door
handles, airplane trays and countless other objects that others will come in contact with when traveling. Anytime you have a lot of people together in a confined space—a family gathering or en route to one —germs are going to spread like wildfire.” He offers some advice to help Americans protect themselves from cold and flu during holiday travels. Be Aware of Germ Risks While on the Road Americans will fly, take a bus or travel by train to visit loved ones during the holidays. While public transportation may be convenient, it’s also a germy way to travel. “There’s no time to disinfect surfaces in an airplane between flights, so you are always flying with someone else’s germs,” he says. Hygiene Is Key to a Healthy Holiday Season Good hygiene is even more vital during the holidays. “Hand washing and hand sanitizers are probably the best defense to reduce your odds of getting a cold or flu by half, especially after being in public areas,” Gerba says. If you do contract a cough, cover your mouth and nose with your arm or sleeve when you sneeze or cough, and use a trusted cold remedy, such as Robitussin Maximum Strength Severe Multi-Symptom Cough, Cold & Flu to relieve a variety of symptoms.
