Matthew McConaughey won an Oscar for 2013’s “Dallas Buyer’s Club,” then followed it with “Interstellar” (which cost $165 million and made $675 million). McConaughey has two more films completed: “Free State of Jones,” in which he plays a Mississippi farmer leading a group of farmers in a rebellion against the Confederacy (with Keri Russell and Brendan Gleason), due May 13, and the thriller “Gold,” where he searches for gold in the Indonesian jungle, with Bryce Dallas Howard, Bruce Greenwood and Stacy Keach.

Producers are trying to figure out what set the “Deadpool” box office on fire. In its first weekend it raked in $284 million. Was it comic book fans waiting 11 years for this film, or was it star Ryan Reynolds full-frontal nude scene that has people returning? Reynolds’ next is “Criminal,” with Kevin Costner and Tommy Lee Jones, out April 15, but don’t expect a nude scene from the cast. WWW.THEGRANDSEASON.COM

A: The market is flooded with fake Shirley Temple mugs, so buyers beware of reproductions and fakes. One tip-off was the price. Most authentic Shirley Temple mugs sell in the $35-$50 range. Twenty dollars was a little too good to be true. When making a purchase, ask about the dealer’s refund policy. If they say no refunds, say no deal. Q: I have two framed prints, one being a drawing of Richard Owen, 1804-1892, and the other Sir William Crookes, 1832-1919. Both are signed “Spy.” What are these prints worth?

Q: I purchased a Shirley Temple cobalt mug in a shop for $20. When I got it home it looked too new to be from the 1930s, so I took it back and got a refund.
A: Leslie Matthew Ward was a Victorian-era British portrait/caricaturist who signed his work “Spy.” He drew 1,325 cartoons for Vanity Fair magazine. His work is collectible and typical prices are caricatures of Thomas Carlyle, $75; Horace Greeley, $75; Mark Twain, $300; and George Bernard Shaw, $150. Some obscure personalities sell in the $35-$50 range. Visit www.philaprintshop. com/vanfair.html to learn more. WWW.THEGRANDSEASON.COM

The 2014 Any One Any Lung survey uncovered a significant lack of understanding about lung cancer. The survey found 84 percent of the general public feel they know little or nothing about lung cancer— which claims more lives than prostate, colon, breast and pancreatic cancer combined. “It’s really important that people realize lung cancer can affect anyone,” says lung cancer survivor Richard Heimler. His diagnosis came as a shock not only because he was only 44 years old at the time, but also because he had never smoked. Lung cancer is more complex than most people think. Here are three common myths. Myth #1: Smoking causes lung cancer. Smoking is a risk factor, but not the only one. Nearly 75 percent of Americans immediately think smoking is the cause when they hear someone has lung cancer. The truth is that close to 15 percent of people with lung cancer
WWW.THEGRANDSEASON.COM
have never smoked. Many factors contribute to a lung cancer diagnosis, including the environment, family history and genetic makeup. Myth #2: Genetics has nothing to do with lung cancer. Genetics plays an important role in lung cancer development. About 28 percent of Americans recognize changes in genetic makeup as a cause of lung cancer, but genetic mutations are closely linked to the most common form of lung cancer, known as non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Myth #3: All lung cancer treatments are similar. Today’s treatments vary greatly. New technologies look at a patient’s tumor cells on the molecular level to help doctors develop individualized treatment plans known as precision oncology. This approach provides patients with the best treatments for their type of lung cancer while avoiding treatments that won’t be effective. For lung cancer patients to get the best possible care, increased awareness and education is needed. To learn more visit www.anyoneanylung.com.

HERE’S A TIP by JoAnn Derson
TIP 1 As you install your window screens to air out the house (or even if they’re up year-round), double-check to make sure they are pet-secure. Cats love a windowsill, and they can fall through and out the window if screens are not secure. TIP 2 To preserve your manicure in the garden, wear gardening gloves. If you love the feel of dirt in your hands but don’t love dirty nails, rake your nails over a bar of soap before digging in. The soap under the nails keeps dirt out and washing up is even easier afterward!

TIP 3 If you use ground chicken or turkey to make lower-fat meatballs, give them some time to firm up by making the meatballs and putting them in the fridge for an hour or so. They hold together much better that way. TIP 4 Add an eraser to your whiteboard marker by gluing a small pompom on the end with a drop of hot glue. Use giftwrap tape to tape a small magnet to the side of the marker, and it’s ready to go up on the fridge with your dryerase board.

It was British art critic and social reformer John Ruskin who made the following sage observation: “Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.” You’ve almost certainly heard of “M*A*S*H,” one of the most popular TV series of all time. One of the main characters on the show, which ran from 1972 to 1983, was Corporal Klinger, played by Jamie Farr. It’s interesting to note that in the 1950s, Farr actually served as an enlisted man in the U.S. Army in Korea—and the dog tags he wore on the show were the same ones he wore during his service. For reasons that are not entirely clear, inventors have created a robot that can solve a Rubik’s cube in just slightly more than one second.

PUTTS & PARS GOLF RESORTS ARE EVOLVING While golf is still at the core, the newest properties increasingly offer activities and immersive experiences that appeal to golfers and non-golfers alike— changing the way guests view and book their getaways. Central Florida’s Streamsong Resort is one of the destinations on the forefront of this trend. Set on 16,000 acres, Streamsong emerged on the site of a former phosphate mine. With towering sand dunes and extreme elevation changes, its land is more reminiscent of Scotland than central Florida. In just a few years, its two intersecting golf courses—Streamsong Red and Streamsong Blue— have earned a place on some of the industry’s most prestigious rankings, including GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 Courses You Can Play in the U.S. A third course, Streamsong Black, will open in late 2017. “Today’s golfer wants a broader experience,” said Richard Mogensen, Streamsong’s general manager. “Our facility is designed with this in mind.” Beyond its two golf courses, the resort
Streamsong even looks different from the traditional golf resort. Its modern 216-room lodge and intimate 12-room clubhouse have captured architectural accolades for their design, which pays homage to the property’s surroundings. “Golf is absolutely in our DNA, but our eye is also always on delivering a complete experience,” Mogensen said.
nature trail and tennis courts provide additional opportunities to unwind and enjoy the setting. Dining options, like
features many options to enjoy the outdoors or just relax. Home to some of the best bass fishing in the U.S., Streamsong offers guided catch-and-release fishing expeditions on its lakes. A sporting clays course is just 10 minutes from the lodge, and is the perfect spot for beginners to learn and pros to refine their shots with guidance from certified instructors. The AcquaPietra Spa, infinity lakeside pool,
the award-winning contemporary Italian restaurant SottoTerra, tempt the palate with fresh, innovative fare in spectacular settings.

SUPER SPRING SALADS
They can be so much more than just a plain, boring, healthy meal!
These days, everyone is putting a twist on salads. There are many ways to incorporate the numerous spring vegetables into a “super” salad by adding a combination of flavorful ingredients and simple preparation methods. Here are a few tips: Make it colorful! Skip the iceberg and opt for spinach or another dark leafy green. Dark leafy greens supply a tremendous amount of nutrients, including vitamins A, C and K, iron, calcium and fiber. Add in some carrots, red bell peppers, tomatoes, blanched asparagus, beets or any other vegetable to add color, and you’ll get additional nutrients critical for maintaining eyesight, bone health and digestive health. Salad isn’t just for vegetables anymore! Try adding apples, citrus segments, grapes, strawberries or blueberries to your plate of colorful vegetables. Just

like many vegetables, fruits contain antioxidants that can help protect against certain forms of cancer as well as reduce levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol. Try to avoid or limit the amount of dried fruits you add to your salad, such as dried cranberries or blueberries. These often have added sugars that can up the calorie content of your meal. Add a healthy crunch! A few toasted walnuts or almonds, spicy baked garbanzo beans and quick pickled vegetables are a great addition to any salad. Add some protein! Protein takes longer to digest, so it keeps us full longer. Protein also is needed for healthy muscles. Eggs, lean meat, beans and cheese (in limited quantities) are easy ways to add protein. Find a heathier dressing! There now are quite a variety of light dressings and vinaigrettes to choose from. Vinegar-based dressings typically have less fat and calories than creamy dressings. Oil and vinegar is a healthy choice in limited amounts—the healthy fat from the oil helps your body to absorb some of the vitamins from the salad. Find a dressing that works for you.

Do You Dream of Seeing a Broadway Show? The Arizona Broadway Theatre brings NYC talent directly to the Valley! The only way to explain the magic behind the Arizona Broadway dinner show extravaganza is to experience it first-hand. This jewel of the West Valley not only produces some of the best shows in the West Valley each year, but the dining experience coupled with the theatrical event is as magical as the talent that appears on stage. Jon Mortimer and his culinary team create the perfect pairing of wine and cuisine to satiate the “foodie” hidden in every guest’s taste buds. It’s no surprise Jon was born into a “food family” with a grandfather who was chairman of General Foods in White Plains, NY. He hails from culinary excellence, and since joining the Arizona Broadway Theatre the meals have created a healthy competition in patrons’ hearts for which aspect of ABT they love most—the cocktails, food or show! Since 2004, Arizona Broadway Theatre has brought nearly 90 musical theatre productions to the West Valley. The non-profit organization offers a total entertainment experience—a one-of-a-kind venue combining quality dining and top-notch entertainment. Due to their professionalism, Arizona Broadway Theatre maintains a great reputation in the New York City theatre community and has the unique ability to lure Broadway level talent to Peoria to perform for the enjoyment of Valley audiences. Most recently, the theatre welcomed Jason E. Simon as Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof.” In addition to entertaining audiences with their outstanding productions, Arizona Broadway Theatre focuses its programs on educational outreach and performing arts education for children through its Theatre For Young Audiences program and summer camp for youth ages three to 18.

THE FINE PRINT WHAT’S HIDING IN YOUR MAILBOX? Tips to help you avoiding being a victim of lottery scams. When you get a letter, email or text message informing you that you’ve just won the lottery and all you have to do
is pay the processing fees or taxes and provide proof of your identity, it sounds too good to be true...because it is. Thousands fall victim to such scams, and crooks are constantly working on new ways to trick people just like you. Don’t be the next victim. Never divulge your personal information. If the correspondence asks for personal information, this should be your first clue that it might be a scam. Never provide your personal and banking
conditions, including the rules and how to claim your winnings. You will never have to pay money in advance if you’ve won a legitimate lottery. If you received a check with the lottery letter and deposited it into your bank account, never send funds from the deposited check until it officially clears. This can take weeks. Under Federal Law, financial institutions have to make the funds available to account holders within days. Consider this: How you can win a real lottery that you didn’t enter?
information to people you don’t know. Consider the professionalism of the letter. Many scammers give themselves away with the nature of the letter, email or text they send. If the message is poorly written, contains typos or sentences that lack professionalism, it’s probably a scam. Check the rules of the lottery. together at any point in the last six months of the tax year. In fact, the head of household filing status might be the one that causes the most headaches. Confused about which filing status applies to you? Consult an experienced professional tax preparer.
COMMON TAX MISTAKES THAT COULD COST YOU
Tax season is in full swing, and according to the IRS, Americans often leave more than a billion dollars on the table in unclaimed refunds. With the average refund hovering at $2,800, ensure you get back your maximum refund and avoid these common filing mistakes. 1. Using an incorrect filing status When filing your taxes, you may be confused about whether your filing status is single, married filing jointly, married filing separately, or head of household. Your filing status affects a few things: what kind of credits and deductions you might be eligible for, your tax bracket and the value of your standard deduction. Filing status is a grey area for a lot of filers who are married and may fall into multiple categories. If you’re legally married and going through a divorce, you could potentially file as married filing jointly, married filing separately or head of household. You can’t file as head of household if you and your spouse lived
2. Taking the standard deduction (not itemizing) Only one in three taxpayers itemize their deductions, but millions may be missing out on the benefits. Often times, home ownership is a life change that helps taxpayers move from taking the standard deduction to itemizing. Itemizing your deduction allows taxpayers to deduct qualifying charitable donations, medical expenses, state income or sales tax, and employee business expenses, among others. Itemizing can save taxpayers hundreds of dollars. 3. Forgetting to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a tax benefit for lower-income workers. The IRS estimates 20 percent of those eligible for the EITC fail to claim the credit on their taxes. In fact, many overlook the EITC because they may not earn enough money to have to file a return, but because the EITC is a refundable credit, those who do not owe taxes can still be eligible to receive this credit. Want to save more? H&R Block will do your taxes for half of what you paid last year.

The average car on the road is about 11 years old. EPA data shows that vehicles (cars and trucks) built in 2005, on average, emit 447 grams of CO2 per mile. A 2016 vehicle is expected to generate about 90 grams less than that every mile. Producing less CO2 is good, but it would take more than 150,000 miles of driving for that 90 grams in CO2 savings to add up and compensate for the 14 metric tons it took to build the new car. Especially for those who don’t drive a lot, it could be greener to just keep a well-maintained older vehicle.

Buying a new car to reduce your carbon footprint might seem logical. Keeping the vehicle in your garage, or replacing it with a more fuel efficient used car, however, may be a greener choice. That’s because it takes a lot of energy and raw materials to manufacture a new vehicle. “It varies between models, but it is reasonable to estimate building a new $30,000 midsize car will generate greenhouse gases that are the equivalent of 14 metric tons of CO2,” says RockAuto.com Vice President, Tom Taylor.
GSM
IS YOUR OLD CAR “GREEN” ENOUGH?
What about the CO2 equivalent discharged while making parts to fix an older car? Brake pads, struts, tires and other parts wear out as the miles pile up. Fortunately, unless the vehicle is involved in an accident, the structure that makes up most of a car will never need to be replaced.

AUTO TALK
Many smaller parts like alternators and major parts like engines and transmissions can be remanufactured. Remanufacturing means only the components that experience wear are replaced. Metal housings and other major pieces can be cleaned, refinished and reused. Remanufacturing saves more than 80 percent of the energy and raw materials required to build a new part from scratch.
enough CO2 to cover the greenhouse gas cost of building it in the first place.
Despite not having tailpipes, electric cars are still on the hook for “upstream CO2” emitted by the utility which provides the electricity for the car. The EPA estimates upstream CO2 is around 100 grams per mile for most electric vehicles. That’s a whopping 347 grams less than what is produced by the average vehicle built in 2005, but it would still take over 40,000 miles of driving before the electric car saved

Does Your Home Need a Fresh Start?
Bring your dreams to life by creating the perfect kitchen or bath! If your home is in need of a fresh start, look no further than Sun City Kitchen and Bath. Owners and brothers Brian and Bradley Wrosch know all about what a fresh start can do for one’s perspective.
and Brad pride themselves on cultivating personal relationships with their clients, and only allow the highest quality craftsmen to work with them on their projects.
During the economic downturn in 2009, Brian and Brad were living in Michigan, and finding it difficult to make ends meet in both the construction and engineering fields. So they moved to Arizona.
Additionally, Brian and Brad wanted the Sun City Kitchen and Bath showroom to be a place where customers could choose all of the materials they would need for their kitchen or bath remodel. To enhance each customer’s experience, in-house Interior Designer Christa Srutowski helps clients visualize their project from start to completion by using the latest computer technology. This incredible use of software and hardware allows for precise changes and modifications to be made prior to a project’s start date.
They decided to combine their construction experience and start a business in Arizona, and thus Sun City Kitchen and Bath was born! The Wrosch brothers have been busy remodeling kitchens and baths in Sun City West and the surrounding areas ever since. Building a business from the ground floor up takes confidence, experience and tenacity—characteristics both brothers share, with Brad’s deep background in mechanical engineering and Brian’s strong construction experience (which included honing his skills in all aspects of construction after school and getting his contractor’s license once he arrived in Arizona), the brothers have never looked back. Serious Business As you know, remodeling a home is serious business— especially when it comes to kitchens and bathrooms. There is a lot more to consider than just colors and cabinet choices—this is definitely a job you don’t want just anyone doing. Unfortunately, when you choose to remodel using a big box store, you’re often hiring a company and contractors you don’t know. Brian

THE GRAND SEASON • APRIL 2016
Brian and Brad are heavily involved with each job, working directly with homeowners on remodeling projects, and Brian spends the majority of his time at each remodel site. When you hire Sun City Kitchen and Bath to complete your remodel, every aspect of the job is completed by their team. Due to this hands-on approach, many customers have left their house keys with the brothers while on vacation in the summer, only to return to find their kitchen or bath beautifully remodeled. Sun City Kitchen and Bath’s showroom is located at 13606 W. Camino Del Sol in Sun City West and is open 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Visit Sun City Kitchen and Bath at www.sckitchenandbath. com, or give them a call at 623-217-3996. You’ll love how fresh your new kitchen or bath makes your home look. WWW.THEGRANDSEASON.COM
IDENTITY THEFT 101
TECH SAVVY
What you need to know to protect yourself from high-tech crooks.
Identity theft has been around longer than the Internet itself— the process has just gotten more sophisticated. No matter how hard we try and protect what’s ours (personal information, credit card numbers and bank account information), the more evolved criminals have become at circumventing these defenses. To that end, it’s never a bad idea to go over the newest forms of identity theft. Read on to find how you may be unknowingly giving away your information. Internet Identity Theft Information can be stolen from the databases of banks, and retailers, or other third-party entities. What this means is that every time you log onto a website and provide personal information, be it credit card, debit card or a password, you are potentially giving away information.
Gone Phishing Just like fishing, phishing uses a lure to catch its next victim. This often comes in the form of spam e-mail or a pop-up warning that looks like it came from a company you trust. For the 57 million adults that have experienced a phishing attack, they know that one click is all it takes. The truth? Legitimate companies will never ask for personal information via e-mail. Beware the Spyware Spyware is technology that surreptitiously gathers information by logging all of your keystrokes, or by using Trojans to collect information from your computer when you click on a pop-up ad or view spam e-mail. While it may seem impossible to protect yourself, there are companies that have made it their mission to defend consumers. VirnetX, for instance, a security and software company, has created Gabriel, a set of secure communication apps derived from a U.S. Department of Defense project. Gabriel offers secure mail, messaging and free voice and video calls. For more information, go to www.gabrielsecure.com.

SENIOR NEWS by Matilda Charles
KEEP YOUR BODY IN MOTION FOR A LONGER LIFE!
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released a study indicating people who are active live longer. The difference between this study and previous ones is the research was monitored. Other studies used self-reported information about the level of activity. This time researchers used activity monitors worn on the body, so the information was certain to be correct. They then tracked those participants for eight years. Researchers learned that moving doesn’t have to involve weights or sweating at the gym. Easy activity—even
making the bed, mopping the floor and walking around the neighborhood—all count as activity that can help us live longer. The reality is if you’re fairly active—meaning if you get up and move around for 30 minutes a day, you can increase the quality of your life. Sweaty workouts are not required, but moderate-to-vigorous activity is especially beneficial. If you get an average amount of activity and only move around for 10 minutes a day, you can improve your risk of mortality by one-third. (But, once we’re up and moving, why stop at 10 minutes? A BETTER YOU
The key is to adapt your food choices to your changing needs.
STAYING HEALTHY AS YOU AGE
Tips for boosting vitality begin at the kitchen table!
It’s true that aging involves physical changes, but it doesn’t have to mean discomfort and disability. While not all illness or pain is avoidable, many of the physical challenges associated with aging can be overcome or drastically mitigated by eating right, exercising and taking care of yourself. It’s never too late to start! No matter how old you are or how unhealthy you’ve been, caring for your body has enormous benefits in keeping you active, sharpening your memory, boosting your immune system, managing health problems and increasing your energy. Tips for eating well. As you age, your relationship to food may change. A decreased metabolism, changes in taste and smell, and slower digestion may affect your appetite, the foods you can eat, and how your body processes food.
Load up on high-fiber fruits, vegetables and whole grains. As you age, your digestive system slows down, so fiber is very important. Consume fiber-rich whole grains, fruit and vegetables to feel more energetic. Put effort into making your food look and taste good. Your taste buds may not be as strong and your appetite may have shrunk, but your nutritional needs are as important as ever. If you don’t enjoy eating like you used to, put a little more effort into your meals, including the way you flavor, prepare and present them. Watch out for dehydration. Because of physical changes, older adults are more prone to dehydration. Make sure you drink plenty of fluid—even if you don’t feel thirsty. Dehydration will cause you to lose your mental edge and can lead to fatigue. Make meals a social event. If you live alone, invite other people over. It’s a great way to stay in touch with friends, and you can share cooking and clean up duties.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director
