1. Words of affirmation

This language uses words to affirm other people. For those who prefer the words of affirmation language, hearing “I love you” and other compliments are what they value the most. Words hold real value within this language.

This language is about giving the other person your undivided attention. Distractions, postponed dates, or the failure to listen can be especially hurtful to these individuals. Being there for them is crucial.

3. Receiving gifts

Dr. Chapman says for some people, what makes them feel most loved is to receive a tangible gift. This doesn’t necessarily mean the person is materialistic, but a meaningful or thoughtful present makes them feel appreciated.

4. Acts of service

For these people, actions speak louder than words—lending a helping hand shows you really care. People who thrive on this language have very little tolerance for people who make more work for them.

LIGHT A SPARK This is one of my favorite times of the year because it is a season of giving. Everyone seems to be a little more generous and charitable around Christmas. Although the spirit of giving can abound this time of year, the spirit of “me-ism” can quickly sneak in if we’re not careful. Below you will find some relatively simple ways your family can serve together (regardless of age) this holiday season. Many of these activities require little to no money. Try one, two, or even all of them. 1. Deliver cookies to the employees at a fire station, police station, or hospital on Christmas Day. 2. Choose a child’s name off of a giving tree and pick out the gift together as a family. 3. Recruit several families and adopt a nursing home. Buy a simple gift for each resident (lotion, slippers, holiday throw blankets, etc.) and arrange a time to deliver the gifts. 4. Send Christmas cards to military personnel overseas. 5. Deliver a baked good to your neighbors. 6. Leave a Christmas card (and perhaps a little treat) in your mailbox for the mail carrier. 7. Go caroling at a nursing home. 8. Ring bells for the Salvation Army. 9. Host a Christmas dinner for the widows and widowers at your church. 10. Take balloons or small gifts to the children’s ward of your local hospital. You probably won’t be able to deliver them to the children themselves due to privacy policies, but you can ask the nurses to deliver them or ask permission of the parents who happen to be present at the time. 11. Go to the grocery store together as a family and pick up a few items for your local food pantry. 12. Clean out your coat closet and take your old coats to a local shelter.

The holidays usually are a busy time of the year filled with cocktail parties, nights out with friends, and family gatherings. Just because your schedule seems a little more “full” than usual doesn’t mean you have to kiss your healthy lifestyle goodbye.

We’ve all heard of mindful eating, right? Put it into practice this holiday season by engaging all five senses when eating that delicious slice of pumpkin pie or forkful of green bean casserole. Being mindful of what you are eating forces you to slow down, allowing your body to process and digest your food better.

FOR THE RIM 1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice 3 tbsp. crushed graham crackers FOR THE DRINK 2 oz. vodka 1 oz. Kahlua 1 1/2 oz. pumpkin spice creamer Cinnamon stick, for garnish

In a pitcher, combine Aperol, cranberry juice, and orange juice. Pour in Prosecco and stir to combine. Fill wine glasses with ice and pour in spritz. Top each with cranberries, an orange slice, and a rosemary sprig.

Dampen the rims of 4 martini glasses and then line the rims with sugar crystals. Combine eggnog, brandy, amaretto, nutmeg, and ice cream in a blender; process until smooth. Pour mixture into martini glasses and garnish each glass with a whole cinnamon stick.

On a shallow plate, combine pumpkin pie spice and crushed graham crackers. Dip the edge of each glass in water, then into the mixture, coating the edge of each glass. Pour vodka and Kahlua into glasses filled with ice. Top with creamer. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice.

Too often, people who see a service dog in public rush up and try to pet the dog. Please educate them on the proper etiquette when they see a service pet. A: With any pet, it’s not just good manners to ask before approaching or trying to touch them. It’s also a safe way to interact with pets and their owners. This is especially important with service and companion animals. They’re doing a job. It isn’t always evident that they’re working. For example, you may see an autism support dog sitting or lying next to their owner. They’re not off duty; they’re helping their person stay calmer in a social setting. As reminders: • Speak to the owner/handler, not the animal • Don’t touch, talk to, feed or handle the animal • Guide/service dogs have the right of way
