HOLIDAY BLUES?

Don’t let this be a blue Christmas. Feelings of sadness that last throughout the holiday season—especially during the months of November and December—are often referred to as the holiday blues. The holidays are usually viewed as a time of happiness and rejoicing. But for some people, it can be a time of painful reflection, sadness, loneliness, anxiety, and depression.

Don’t Isolate Yourself

Even people who love the holidays can experience the blues during this busy season. The holidays are often a time of high emotions and demands, which can leave a lot of people feeling stressed and exhausted.

Find Time for Yourself

There are a number of reasons why people might experience the holiday blues. Some of the possibilities may include: lack of sleep, excessive eating and alcohol use, isolation and loneliness and unrealistic expectations. There are several things you can do on your own to make the holidays easier to deal with.

Drink In Moderation

Alcohol is a depressant and drinking too much can exacerbate any negative feelings that you might have. Consider limiting your consumption and avoid using alcohol as a way to deal with or avoid difficult emotions. 26 THE GRAND SEASON • DECEMBER 2021

Social isolation can be a major risk factor for depression. The problem is, sadness often makes you want to hide at home alone. Look for ways you can enjoy social connections, even if you aren’t able to go home for the holidays. If you’re feeling lonely, ask a friend to come over for a visit. Make sure that you leave enough time for yourself to relax. Even 15 to 20 minutes a day to enjoy some quiet time, read a book, listen to music, take a bath, or some other relaxing activity can do wonders for your stress levels.

Set Realistic Expectations

It’s fine to be excited about the holidays and make plans for the things you want to do. But it is also important to keep your expectations realistic and reachable. Remember, the holidays change just as people change. Kids grow older, people move, and new people will become a part of your life. CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Try something old or new!

Traditions are a family’s way to pass down important events and memories associated with a specific holiday. The greatest thing about traditions is they can be started at any given point and can be used to help your family cultivate a deep bond, or can signal to new friends, that they are indeed a part of your family traditions. Consider using the following ideas to cultivate your Christmas traditions:

Take the family to the mountains or to a tree farm and cut down your own Christmas tree. Attend a late-night Christmas service on Christmas Eve.

Go to a Christmas concert in your neighborhood. Stuff an extra stocking if you might welcome an unexpected guest for Christmas.

Clean out your closets and take clothes in good condition to a shelter. Decorate the tree while listening to Christmas music. When finished, make hot cocoa, with marshmallows, and admire your tree.

Gather a group of family and friends and sing Christmas songs to people living in retirement homes. Also bring freshly baked gifts for the attendees to take as a memory. Attend the play, “The Christmas Carol.”

Read the “Night before Christmas,” to your grandchildren. Host a neighborhood holiday party, exchange white elephant gifts.

Spoil your neighbors with Secret Santa gifts. Just wrap up a gift, and leave it on the doorstep with a note from Santa. Volunteer to feed meals to the homeless during the holidays. Invite your family and neighbors to join you.

Consider adopting a family who is less fortunate for the holidays. Invite your family and friends to participate in the gift giving. Write holiday cards and deliver them to those who may be alone for the holidays. 30
