FRESH START Now that the holidays have passed, it’s time to clear the clutter in our lives. So, while you’re cleaning out your closets, maybe it’s time to declutter your marriage as well. Regardless of how long you’ve been married, we’ve all collected clutter we need to get rid of, so we can have a fresh start this year. Think about it, what can you eliminate in your relationship that will help you and your spouse thrive this year? Below are some constructive ways to de-clutter your marriage:
1. Throw out one bad habit.
We all have bad habit clutter, things we do without even thinking about it. What’s a bad habit in your marriage you can get rid of? Do you assume the worst about your husband instead of assuming the best? Is your bad habit not giving him your full attention when he’s talking to you? Is it interrupting him when he’s talking? Choose one bad habit and toss it today.
2. Organize your priorities.
The clutter in our marriage comes from not being clear about what’s important to keep

doing for the relationship and what’s not. When we organize our priorities, we can put our marriage front and center where it can get the attention it deserves. Once you’ve prioritized your marriage, then figure out where the rest of your commitments belong.
3. Don’t hang onto grudges.
Grudges can blind us to the good things about our spouse. And, when we hold onto grudges we’ll see everything they do—even the good things—in the light of that grudge because grudges make us bitter. Practice forgiveness to get rid of the grudges you’re hanging on to.
4. Accept the things you can’t change.
Unfortunately, there is some clutter in our lives, and in our marriage we can’t get rid of. Just like that old high school jersey your husband can’t let go, there are things in our marriage that are here to stay. Do you really need everything you’ve got? If you want to simplify your life, it’s time to start de-cluttering. Getting started and following through with a plan to declutter can prove challenging. To make it a bit easier, here are some ideas to jumpstart your makeover and unleash your possibilities for a simpler life.
1. Declutter Briefly and Often
A 15-minute stint, performed regularly, delivers surprising results sooner than you might expect. Set a timer and get to work. You’ll be delighted by how much you get done in such a short amount of time.
2. Add Decluttering to Your Calendar
Make it easier to remember to declutter briefly and often by adding it to your calendar. Daily, weekly, three times a week—do whatever works best for you to get a routine going. Cross it off when you’ve taken care of it.

3. One-In-Two-Out
If you need to purchase something new, you can offset that addition by removing two other items from your home. For example, when buying a new recliner, sell or donate your old recliner and one other piece of furniture in your home that you’re not using.
4. Repurpose Stuff for Charity
Giving meaningful items to loved ones may make it easier to let go of them. Consider donating less sentimental items to charity or to a family in need. You can find a donation drop-off locations online, or schedule a pickup, maximizing the ease of giving.
5. Let Clothes Go
If you haven’t worn an item in the past year, you likely don’t need it. If parting with some of your clothes proves too difficult to bear, start small with cheap, easy-to-replace clothing like socks. Many charities accept lightly worn clothing, and you can even use the donation as a write-off on your taxes.
6. Stay Focused
You’ll feel accomplished and motivated to continue when you focus on one room and finish it completely. If you enjoy music, turn on your favorite artists and try to have fun while you declutter. Keep your eye on the end goal to remind you how good it will feel to have an organized, clutter-free home.

MIND GAMES
The brain is a complex and confusing organ. So how do you start decluttering your mind? It’s actually not difficult, if you give it a little thought. You can declutter your mind with several simple actions, try a few and see if they work for you.
1. Breathe
So simple, and yet so effective. Take a few deep breaths, and then for a few minutes, just focus on your breathing. Concentrate on your breathing as it comes into your body, and then as it goes out. It has a calming effect, especially if you continue to return your focus to your breath when your mind strays.
2. Write it down
If you have a bunch of things on your mind, it helps to get them on paper and off your mind. This keeps your head from being filled with everything you need to do and remember.

3. Identify the essential
If you want to simplify or declutter, the first step is identifying what is most important. In this case, identify what is most important in your life, and what’s most important for you to focus on right now. Make a short list for each of these things.
4. Eliminate
Now that you’ve identified the essential, you can identify what’s not essential. What things in your life are not truly necessary or important to you? By eliminating as many of these things as possible, you can get a bunch of junk off your mind.
5. Take a walk
Getting outside and doing some kind of physical activity is a great way to get stuff off your mind. I like to walk my dog, but whatever you do doesn’t matter. Spending some physical energy clears the mind.
6. Do less
Take your to-do list and cross off half the things on it. Just pick a few things to get done today and focus on those. Let the rest go away. If you do less, you’ll have less on your mind.
7. Let go
Worrying about something? Angry about somebody? Frustrated? Harboring a grudge? While these are natural emotions and thoughts, none of them are really necessary. See if you can let go of them.

Maybe some of your medications have to be stored at a certain temperature or taken at a specific time each day. Rather than worrying about memorizing all the special instructions for each medication, try some of these medication management tips.
Use a Pill Organizer
A pill organizer comes in handy because it will store your medicines based on your A.M., P.M., weekly or monthly schedule. One strategy to make the best use of a pill organizer is to schedule a weekly or monthly recurring date on your calendar to fill your pill organizer.
Write a Schedule
Keeping a consistent medication management schedule is essential for your health. Stay on track with your medications by writing out a daily or weekly schedule. Make sure to update your schedule whenever your doctor adds or discontinues a medication from your health plan.

Do not self-diagnose or make any changes to your prescription without speaking to your pharmacist or doctor. A clean, clutter-free home can do wonders. Apart from the psychological benefits you get from organizing after the process, decluttering your home means you’ll ultimately be left with the items that best serve you. To guide you through the never-ending task of decluttering your home, try these tried-and-true tips.
1. Determine your goals.
Before diving into decluttering your home, figure out what you want to accomplish first. Which rooms do you want to tackle? Whether you want to declutter your home office or your entire home, determine what’s working in the space and what’s not.
2. Figure out what items bring you joy.
Only keep items that bring you joy. This doesn’t mean they have to bring you joy 24/7, though. If you have something seasonal, like a ton of Christmas ornaments, or a collection that you don’t always want on display, you can neatly stow those away until they’re needed.
3. Start small.
If you need some motivation and want to see and feel what a decluttered area can do for you, start with a small space that you see every day. Maybe it’s that bathroom cabinet or a kitchen drawer. Decide on a room and continue in that room until you’ve gone through every area.
4. Don’t hold onto something just because it was a gift.
It’s hard to let go of something that a loved one gave you, but it’s really the acts of giving and receiving that count. If the gift isn’t something you need or like, don’t feel guilty about letting it go. Maybe it will serve someone else better!
5. Follow the one-in-two-out rule.
To better maintain a decluttered space, promise that you’ll get rid of two items for every new item you bring into your house. With this method, you won’t start to amass a ton of stuff.
6. Use the hanger trick for clothing.
Not quite sure which clothes you wear and which ones you don’t? Do a little experiment to find out by flipping the hangers in your closet. After a certain amount of time, like three months, check back to see which hangers you flipped the correct way to wear. In the end, you’ll be left with garments that it’s likely time to say goodbye to.
