It’s hard to believe we’re half-way through 2023. While the temperatures are rising, I hope you find the opportunity to escape the heat and head to Northern Arizona to explore all of the natural beauty in our state.

June is a great month to slow down and reflect on all the incredible blessings we each have experienced. Having just celebrated Memorial Day, I cannot shake the overwhelming gratitude I have for the men and women who have given their lives for our freedom. This feeling is punctuated by remembering the courage and fortitude our soldiers exhibited on D-day. Thank you to each of you who have served in our Armed Forces. We appreciate each one of you.

REKINDLE YOUR ROMANCE!

All the relationship advice books say you’ve got to have scheduled date nights with your partner to keep your romance alive. What they don’t say is, the key to having a dynamic date night is to keep it interesting— and find ways to grow your relationship while exploring new things together. Try these date night ideas to rekindle your romance:

Surprise date

Every marriage needs the surprise date. I suggest each partner choose one date each month to plan fully without letting the other partner know. The surprise date gets to be a really special gift from the planner to the other partner.

New to both date

It’s so much fun to discover something new together. Try a new restaurant, or type of cuisine. Head to a nearby town you haven’t explored yet. Maybe try a sport or activity neither of you have tried.

Competitive date

The competition date is always fun, but can be dangerous if you’re highly competitive people. Go bowling, head to the gym or for a hike, play mini golf…anything that will provide a friendly challenge. If it’s an at-home date, whip out the cards or chess set. Good luck, and may the odds be ever in your favor.

Nostalgia date

Have you ever recreated your first date? Go to places you went when you first started seeing each other. If you now live in a different area you can wear something you would’ve worn, and play music you listened to back then.

Other date night ideas:

Take dance lessons. Create a playlist and take a long drive. Make your favorite dinner together. Volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. Invite friends over to play cards. Stay the night at a resort you’ve always wanted to visit. Visit a vineyard and learn about local wines.

MEN, KNOW YOUR RISKS

If you don’t have a regular source of healthcare or you’ve never had your cholesterol checked, you’re not alone. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, nearly 26 percent of men in the United States do not have a regular source of healthcare. Reverse this trend with medical tests and screenings to keep you healthy.

BODY MASS

Excess weight increases your risk for diabetes and heart disease. Your body mass index (BMI) measures your body fat based on your height and weight, and it can determine if you’re overweight or at risk for developing obesity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an adult BMI between 18.5 and 25 is within normal range.

BLOOD PRESSURE

If your blood pressure is high, you may require medication to control it and ward off heart disease, kidney disease and stroke. If your blood pressure is within the normal range, you only need to have your blood pressure checked every two years. Normal blood pressure is less than 120/80 mm Hg, according to the AHA.

DIABETES

Blood pressure higher than 135/80 mm Hg may be a symptom of diabetes. Testing for diabetes may include a hemoglobin A1C blood test, a fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test, or an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). A single test is insufficient to diagnose diabetes. A second test must confirm that your blood glucose level is abnormally high.

MENTAL HEALTH

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than 6 million men are diagnosed with depression in the United States every year. Feeling hopeless or experiencing loss of interest in things you normally enjoy for more than two weeks may signal depression. Don’t dismiss prolonged bouts of feeling down or try to tough it out. Your doctor can screen you for depression and help determine how to treat it.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is currently the country’s fifth most common cancer among men. More women than men get melanoma before the age of 50, but by age 65 the ratio reverses. Men then get melanoma twice as often as women. Check your skin every month for moles that have changed or look abnormal.

HISTORY 101

If you think your history lessons in school were completely factual, you may be mistaken.

“Much of what you know about history may be limited or even wrong,” says Marc Wilson, author of “Kidnapped by Columbus,” a historical novel. “All too often, legends, poems and myths are emphasized in favor of more complex truths. History is usually written by the victors, not the victims.”

With that in mind, here are four historical facts that may surprise you.

Columbus a Kidnapper

“In 1492, Columbus sailed the Ocean Blue,” says the famous poem that most Americans know. But Columbus never landed on or even saw North America, and when he sailed in the Caribbean and along the coast of Central and South America, he kidnapped natives to act as

guides in his search for gold and the Garden of Eden.

At the end of his first voyage, he kidnapped six natives from the island of Hispaniola and took the “Indians” to Spain to prove that he’d reached India. Native Americans have been mislabeled as “Indians” ever since.

Washington’s Cherry Tree

As the myth goes, young George Washington couldn’t tell a lie and confessed to his father that he damaged his cherry tree. However, one of his biographers, Mason Locke Weems, had no such problems with the truth and invented this whopper in the fifth edition of his Washington biography, entitled “The Life of Washington” in 1806.

And Washington never wore wooden dentures, either. He had different dentures made from gold, ivory and even lead.

Napoleon: Not Short

Napoleon wasn’t actually short. At the end of his life he was measured at 5 feet 2 inches — which sounds short until you learn this was in French inches, which are longer than British inches. In today’s inches, the fiery tyrant actually stood around 5 feet, 7 inches, which was slightly taller than the average European man of his day. He also employed tall soldiers in his personal guard, which made him seem shorter by comparison.

So, how can those interested in history go about arriving at the truth? From, historical novels to primary source materials, reading beyond the textbook can give you a more complete and accurate history.

TAKE A STEP

Sometimes what keeps us from getting what we want in life is our reluctance to change our routines and habits. Whatever it is–you can break out of these patterns and create positive change. Here are some ways to step out of your comfort zone and into greatness:

1. Face a fear you have

Do you have a fear that’s been hanging around awhile? It comes to mind and then goes dormant for lack of pushing yourself? Think of that one fear that may be holding you back from your potential and set a goal to tackle it in the next three months.

2. Do what scares you

Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Do one thing every day that scares you.” How powerful that would be to make a conscious effort to do what scares you? What would open up? Start out by making a list of three things at the beginning of the week and challenge yourself to do each one during the week. Make it fun and see what good things transpire.

3. Make a bold move

Sometimes we just need to throw our hats over the wall and take a big risk for big rewards. The first step is to set a goal that is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-limited. Then create a plan with action steps. Now, take one small action everyday towards your goal, or at least once a week.

4. Have tough conversations

“A person’s success in life can usually be measured by the number of uncomfortable conversations he or she is willing to have,” says Author Tim Ferris. Having a conversation with a friend or loved one about something that bothers you in the relationship is one of the most difficult and courageous things to do.

5. Try something new

A way to step out of what is familiar is to explore new and different things. You can start by creating a bucket list, a list where you write down all the experiences you would like to do in your lifetime like travel to certain places, run a marathon, do yoga, write a book, play an instrument, ride a zip line, become an entrepreneur. This bucket list is a great way to help you think of new ways to step out of your comfort zone.

What to do when your puppy is wetting the floor

Q. I purchased a puppy who is 2 months old from a breeder in another state. I’m having trouble housetraining her. She drinks water all day, but she can’t hold her pee and ends up wetting on the floor. I work from home, but I can’t catch her and correct her. Instead, I think I should just take the water bowl away for most of the day. Will that work?

A: Do not take away the water bowl. Pets should always have access to water, regardless of their housetraining status. Puppies have really tiny bladders and cannot hold their water for very long. Gradually take away the pads until there is just one “target” in the pen. Be patient. She’ll get this!
