Kindness is one of the most overlooked characteristics of a happy marriage. Happy marriages are inundated with kindness. They are a continual give and take of actions of kindness, never with the expectation of reciprocation, but always with the belief that being kind is a key component of love. It may not happen every single day, but on most days find a way to do one small thing for your spouse. Of course, the prerequisite for this step is to find out what is on your spouse’s plate.

2. Restrain harsh words.

Kindness is expressed through actions. By restraining your words, you are showing your spouse that you value and respect them. Few things can injure a relationship like inappropriate words.

3. Listen and Look. One of the kindest acts you

can do for another human being is to see them and give them your ear. Listening and looking requires that you use your energy for the benefit of another person. It demands that you humble yourselves, push aside your personal agenda, and focus on another. That is a kind act. Kindness is like a muscle. Q: For some reason this winter, my new house has been invaded by spiders. They are building webs in every corner of the house, and every day I’m knocking down another web with my broom. I’m worried about my cat being bitten by a spider. What do I do if this happens? A: I’m a huge fan of spiders, because they are one of nature’s best pest control services, trapping and disposing of many other tiny critters. They probably have much more to fear from your cat than the other way around, because housecats see spiders as interesting prey. Still, a spider invasion is not much fun to deal with. Look for something that is attracting spiders to your home. Do you have wood or leaves piled up against the foundation? Are there cracks in the foundation? How clean are your HVAC vents and ductwork? Addressing the source of the problem can cut down quite a bit on the number of spiders invading your house.

INGREDIENTS 3 large scoops vanilla ice cream (about 1/4 c. each) 1/4 c. heavy cream 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract 6 drops green food coloring Whipped cream, for topping Maraschino cherry, for topping DIRECTIONS In a blender, mix vanilla ice cream, heavy cream, peppermint extract, and food coloring until completely smooth, then pour into a glass. Top with whipped cream and a cherry before serving.

INGREDIENTS 1 (3.4-oz) package lemon or pineapple Jell-O 1/2 c. cold whiskey 1 c. Cool Whip Gold sprinkles 6 rainbow candy belts, cut into 2-inch pieces DIRECTIONS In a small saucepan, bring 1 cup water to a boil. Add Jell-O mix and stir until dissolved. Turn off heat and stir in 1 more cup of water and the whiskey. Place 16 plastic shot glasses on a baking sheet and pour in mixture until each is two-thirds full. TIP 1 You can use a little bit of cooking oil to remove the last bits of sticker adhesive from a glass picture frame. Remove as much of the paper sticker as possible, then dab the spot with oil on a paper towel. Rub off. When all the adhesive is removed, use glass cleaner. TIP 2 Got stale bread? If it’s not too far gone, you can try reviving it in the oven. Set the bread on low heat in the oven with a pan of water next to it. If the bread is too stale, you can always cut it up into cubes and use as croutons or toast and grind into breadcrumbs. TIP 3 Got a stinky sink? Check your garbage disposal. Pull out the removable rubber drain insert to get a better look. Sometimes, all that’s needed is to clean the insert as it can collect a nasty food slime on the disposal-facing side. Kindness is imperative to make any relationship work. But have you ever considered how kind you’re being to yourself? Daily, the voice in our head replays our mistakes, reminds us of our failures, and tell us we just don’t measure up. It’s time to silence your inner critic and be kind to yourself.
