October is such an amazing month in Arizona! The evenings are cooling down, and the sunsets are just spectacular.

This month’s issue of The Grand Season focuses on respect. As our country becomes more divided, it seems like we have lost the ability to love and respect those with differing opinions and beliefs.

With Election Day quickly approaching, I want to encourage you to get out and vote. Mid-term elections are critical this year—regardless of your party preference. Here in Arizona, we’re electing a new Governor, so make your voice heard.

I trust you have registered to vote. If you’re unable to cast your ballot in person, contact the Election Services Division at the Secretary of State’s Office at elections@azsos.gov.

Being prepared is smart pet ownership

Q. I read in a guide about cutting dogs’ toenails that styptic will stop bleeding if you cut their paws. What is that, and where do I get it?

A: Styptic powder can be used on small nicks and tiny cuts to stop bleeding and reduce pain. That’s helpful when trimming pets’ toenails, which can be a trau matic experience for them, especially if you should trim a little too far up the nail and accidentally cut the quick. The powder is applied with a cotton ball or soft cloth. Styptic powder should be an essential part of an easy-to-access first-aid kit for pets. You can assemble a few key items and store them in a tightly sealed plastic container. In addition to the powder, have gauze and tape, a small bar of soap, a disinfec tant like hydrogen peroxide or alcohol wipes, Benadryl (plain, with no ibuprofen or acetaminophen), cotton balls and disinfecting hand wash (for you). You might also include your vet’s phone number, extra ID tags and copies of your pet’s shot records.

Respect – it’s something we all feel we deserve from other people, but have you ever stopped to ask whether you are respecting yourself?

You may not even realize it, but you could be displaying some of the many signs of disrespect to the person staring at you in the mirror. Ask yourself whether you can relate to any of the following:

You speak poorly of yourself

You are forever playing down your gifts, talents, and desirable qualities, because you just can’t bring yourself to have pride in them.

You put others ahead of yourself

You are a kind and helpful soul, but you will always put the needs of other people

The VA Office of Inspector General appears to be willing to go after anyone breaking the law, bending the rules, doing wrong—even one of their own.

In a recent case it came to their attention that a senior OIG employee was still carrying an OIG-issued firearm and credentials after no longer being eligible to do so.

Having been transferred out of one position into another where carrying the firearm was not authorized, the individual should have turned the item in. But he didn’t. Enter the OIG investigators.

They unearthed a tangle of job classification language that revealed nobody was reading the fine print nor filling out the correct forms, even the ones who should have done so. And nobody stepped forward to take the firearm away from the employee, even the ones who knew he wasn’t authorized to have it.

The end result is a thing of beauty. The employee in question retired and two senior executives are no longer employed by the OIG, having resigned during the investigation.

Respect is essential for life-long love.

Mutual respect in a marriage is important because it is a sign of trust, support, and the knowledge that both of you love and appreciate the other for who they are. Every successful marriage is based on the foundation of mutual respect for one another. A relationship in which respect is absent will eventually lead to conflicts between a couple.

Respect is an important attribute for any relationship to be successful, but what is respect, exactly? How do you show respect for others? Here are some ways you can show respect for those in your life.

LISTEN

Listening to what another person has to say is a basic way to respect them. Everyone wants to have their say. Everyone wants to feel that they’re being listened to. Whether they have something profound to say is not the point. People want to be heard. When you give another person your time, your focus and your ear, you validate them.

AFFIRM

When you affirm someone, you’re giving evidence that they matter. That they have value. That they’re important. And that they’re worthy of respect.

BE KIND

Kindness is an expression of respect. Respect for the fact that someone else is simply in need. We have all been in need. And what a relief it was when someone showed you kindness. Kindness is a tangible way of showing respect.

BE POLITE

It’s difficult to witness the decline of politeness in the modern world. Whether it’s on the highway, at the grocery store, in the parking lot, on the athletic field, on Facebook, or in political rhetoric – polite discourse and interaction is rapidly becoming a lost art. Yet, it’s so easy to be polite. An act of politeness can literally change a person’s day.

BE THANKFUL

When someone does something for you that’s beneficial. Or, they say something to you that’s helpful in some way. Or, they honestly affirm you in some way that’s important to you. You should thank them. It’s not so much that they need to be thanked. It’s that people want to feel that what they’ve done has made a difference. When there is no thankfulness for something we’ve done, or even for who we are, we feel a lack of respect.

Lori Loughlin’s career came crashing down in 2019, when she and hus band Mossimo Giannulli were arrested for their part in the 2019 “entrance exam cheating scandal.” She served two months in prison, paid a $150,000 fine and completed 100 hours of community ser vice. Now Hallmark has quietly brought back her series “Garage Sale Mys tery.” Hallmark’s decision to reinstate her (perhaps for next season’s “When Calls the Heart” as well?) followed after an over whelmingly positive reac tion from loyal, dedicated fans who feel she deserves a second chance.
