Happiness is circular. Happy people have happy habits, which, in turn, makes them happier. Here’s a list of habits that have a high chance of giving you a happiness boost.

1 Be nice.
Choose kindness whenever you can — you should be AT LEAST as nice to your spouse as you would a stranger or as you were when you started dating.
2 Say “I love you” as much as possible.

3 Be honest.
Be honest about the things that make you mad, and don’t sweat the small stuff.
4 Small tokens of love go a long way.
Frequent demonstrations, in the form of gifts and expressions of affection show your emotional attachment.
5 Cherish each other.
Don’t forget how important the little things are, like a hug or a compliment. Don’t take each other for granted.
6 Build a strong foundation of friendship.
You have to be friends. Your husband or wife should be someone that you’d want to hang out with. Of course, you
have to have the sexual aspect, but that’s not enough to sustain a relationship. You’re going to go through hard times and you need someone who you want to spend your time with.
7 Know that relationships are a two way street.
Be honest about what you want and need, and listen to your spouse about what they want and need.
8 Lastly, no marriage is perfect—and that’s okay.
Understand that nothing is perfect forever. There are going to be disagreements. There will be times when your partner says or does something that hurts you. People in happy relationships will talk about it and work through it. Those in bad relationships will let it stew until it becomes a bigger problem.

INGREDIENTS Caramel, for rimming glasses 2 tbsp. cinnamon sugar 1 (1.5-qt.) container vanilla ice cream 1 c. bourbon 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract 1 tsp. honey 1 tsp. ground cinnamon, plus more for garnish Whipped cream, for garnish
DIRECTIONS
1.In a shallow dish, rim two glasses with caramel and cinnamon sugar and set aside. 2. In a blender, combine ice cream, bourbon, vanilla, honey, and cinnamon and blend until smooth. Pour mixture into glasses and garnish with whipped cream and ground cinnamon.
Apple Cider Slushies INGREDIENTS
3 c. apple cider 1 lemon, juiced 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 2 mini cinnamon-sugar doughnuts
DIRECTIONS
1. Pour cider, lemon juice, and cinnamon in a loaf pan, whisking to combine. Freeze for 1 hour. 2. Remove the cider mixture from the freezer and use a fork to scrape the slushy mixture, so it doesn’t turn into a giant ice cube. Once fully scraped and stirred, return it to the freezer for 1 hour more. 3. Remove the cider mixture from the freezer once again, using a fork to scrape and stir it into a consistency like shaved ice. FORGIVE YOURSELF
I can’t believe you did that. You idiot. You can’t be trusted. You’re terrible. And I’ll never forgive you. These words can be devastating to someone who is asking for forgiveness. But when these are the words you say quietly to yourself, they can be crippling. Some of the harshest words you may ever hear are the words you say in your heart: “I’ll never forgive myself.” Forgiving yourself can be hard work, but it’s worth it. Here are some tips to consider when you can’t forgive yourself:
Decide to let it go
In the process of forgiving, the first barrier you have to remove is within your own mind. You must make the decision: I will not dwell on this incident. That decision doesn’t guarantee you’ll stop the mental video, but it draws a line in the sand that you have that goal. It’s a starting point.
Look at what you’ve done…objectively
A big obstacle to forgiving yourself is the inability to see things objectively. Perhaps, what you did was a big deal. Or maybe, it just feels like it was. Pretend it was someone else that you love who did what you did. Ask yourself how you would view them.
Own it, but don’t be owned by It
Taking responsibility for what you did is important. But one bad choice doesn’t have 26 THE GRAND SEASON • OCTOBER 2021
to define you. You can’t control how others define you, but you can control how you define yourself.
Grieve your loss
If a tragedy was averted in your situation, focus on the good of that, and be thankful. If, however, a tragic loss occurred, know it’s okay to grieve the pain. Beating yourself up constantly is not a requirement of grief.
Seek forgiveness from others
Forgiveness from others can free you up to forgive yourself. If you haven’t yet, seek forgiveness from the person you hurt.
Focus on what you can learn
Everyone fails. Everyone hurts others eventually. It’s part of the human experience and condition. But not everyone will learn from what they do. Be someone who is willing to learn from your past to benefit your future.
Record your reflections
Sometimes capturing a record of your thoughts and feelings can help you face them honestly. Do some light journaling for a few days. Focus on what you are struggling to let go of and what you would do if you could be free of the burden of guilt you feel.

Happiness is good for your health
Happiness and good health go hand-in-hand. Indeed, scientific studies have found that happiness can make our hearts healthier, our immune systems stronger, and our lives longer. If you need some extra motivation to get happier, check out the ways happiness has been linked to good health.
1. Happiness protects your heart
Love and happiness may not actually originate in the heart, but they are good for it. Researchers have found that happiness predicts a lower heart rate and blood pressure. In the study, participants rated their happiness over 30 times in one day and then again three years later. The initially happiest participants had a lower heart rate on follow-up (about six beats slower per minute), and the happiest participants during the follow-up had better blood pressure.
2. Happiness strengthens your immune system
Do you know a grumpy person who always seems to be getting sick? That may be no coincidence: Research has found a link between happiness and a stronger immune system. 3. Happiness combats stress
Stress is not only upsetting on a psychological level, but also triggers biological changes in our hormones and blood pressure. Happiness seems to temper these effects, or at least help us recover more quickly.
4. Happy people have fewer aches and pains A recent study asked participants to rate their recent experience of positive emotions, then (five
weeks later) how much they had experienced negative symptoms like muscle strain, dizziness, and heartburn since the study began. People who reported the highest levels of positive emotion at the beginning actually became healthier over the course of the study, and ended up healthier than their unhappy counterparts.
5. Happiness combats disease and disability Happiness is associated with improvements in more severe, long-term conditions as well, not just shorter-term aches and pains.
