1. Recognize stress symptoms
Don’t let stress sabotage your relationship “Stress impacts our love relationships more than we are aware of or acknowledge,” according to Judy Ford, a LCSW. She says, “Stress has become such a normal part of daily life that partners become immune to the symptoms and warning signs,” she said. Ignoring stress only ignites it. “Even when a couple tries to ignore stress, like static in the air, it is felt and absorbed.” If partners do talk about being stressed, they may not know what to do about it, Ford added. Also, “stress is contagious.” Ford compared stress to a game of pingpong, where the tension “bounces back and forth between partners.” Partners become both unable to relax and enjoy each other, she said. Following are some ideas on how to protect your relationship from stress. 8

Couples often become so accustomed to unchecked stress that they barely recognize it. So how do you know when your partner (or you) is stressed? Look for these signs: one or both partners are snappy, cranky, withdrawn, moody, pouty, teary, ornery, angry, restless, hyper, agitated, overly excited. Or, one or both partners are self-medicating with drugs, alcohol, food, etc.
2. Listen Learn how to listen. We all want the person we love to listen and understand what we’re going through. Unfortunately, listening is a skill few people actually do well, so make an effort to learn how to become an active listener.
3. Comfort Many partners forget to console their significant other and instead try to problem solve. Ford says, “Comfort each other first, problem solve second.” That’s because your partner might be looking for stress relief rather than a nitty-gritty brainstorming session.
4. Ask your partner what you can do. An important way of supporting your loved one is to ask them flat-out how you can help. According to Ford, you might say: “Is there anything I can do to make your day go smoother?”

British actor Rege-Jean Page made a splash in Shondra Rhimes’ Netflix series “Bridgerton” on Christmas night of 2020. He became an overnight sensation. Fans of the show were shocked when he announced he’d be leaving the series after the first season. When he hosted “Saturday Night Live,” he confirmed he’d left the show. Netflix knew what they had and immediately signed him to star in the $200 million film “The Gray Man,” opposite Ana de Armas, Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling, expected to be released for streaming next year.

Biggest raise in decades coming?
Don’t count your money before it’s in hand, of course. But word is that the Social Security increase we see in January could be as much as 6.1%—the largest since 1983! For the average benefit recipient, currently receiving $1,543, that could amount to $94 per month. It’s a few years too late for a serious increase, but certainly better than the 1.3% bump we saw for 2021 and the 1.6% the year before. Social Security is calculated by the cost-of-living adjustment in the third quarter each year. For 2021, they calculated that a 1.3% increase should be plenty. We know that was wrong, as prices of everything had climbed. It’s all in how and what they calculate. They use the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage
Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which measures prices on certain goods and services. But we’re not wage earners, and we don’t work in offices. We spend our money on different things. We wonder why they don’t use the index for the elderly (CPI-E), which takes into consideration the things we do buy, such as medical care, medical services, housing and health insurance. There’s a bill in the House of Representatives—H.R.4315—(to do that very thing.) We spend less than the CPI-W group on transportation, food, clothing, entertainment, education and communication. The Federal Reserve Bank did a midsummer survey on what consumers are expecting for the rest of 2021. The expectation of responders is that we’ll see a 4.8% increase on top of what we’ve already seen this year. Keep an eye on the news in October, when the rate of next year’s Social Security increase is finalized. Meanwhile start planning for next year as soon as you can. Look for savings everywhere you can find them and make the most of this opportunity!

Being calm isn’t always easy, let alone when chaos erupts around you. You have to cultivate a practice of being calm – and that practice must be consistent. Here are some tips to help you on your way: 1. Make a decision to create calm in your life—even when life gets chaotic. This decision is powerful in helping you maintain your daily practice. Know that this is possible to achieve, even if it seems impossible when you start. 2. Breathe consciously as often as you remember. Take three deep breaths when you get up, in the shower, waiting for your coffee, driving in traffic, sitting at your desk…whenever you remember throughout your day. 3. Take time for yourself—every day. To stay sane, you must take at least a few minutes, 15 - 30 minutes or more is better, to be with yourself. Go outside, take a walk, look at the sky. Allow the stress of the day to slip off your shoulders and savor some moments of joy. 4. Process your emotions. If you are upset about something, or with someone, give yourself time to recognize the emotions and make sense of your feelings before saying something you might regret. 5. Practice gratitude. When life feels like a struggle, it’s easy to get caught up in looking at everything that is wrong. Write down five things you are grateful for each day.

DEALING WITH BEGGING What to do when it gets out of control
Q. Our dog turns into a monster when she wants treats. She drools on my arm, chews on my roommate’s shoe, barks loudly and more. We eventually break down and give her a treat. How can we stop this behavior? A: First, reinforce her basic obedience training. Work with her at least once a day on the “sit,” “stay,” “lie down,” “leave it” and “come here” commands. I recommend not working with her during the time that you’re normally relaxing in the living room with your roommate, because you want to try to reinforce that certain places and times are for training, play or treats. You’ll also need to employ the “ignore and divert” strategy. Ignore her attention-seeking behavior for a specific amount of time...say, five minutes. Next, command her to either sit or lie down, and give her a chew toy. When she inevitably gets up to beg again, repeat the process. Don’t give her a treat at all. This will take time, but eventually she will get it. Many dog owners add a structured treat time to the day for improving behavior.

People who feel angry often and fail to deal with it well are more likely to have heart problems, including a heart attack, according to research from Johns Hopkins and other leading health institutions. The incidence of heart attack was almost five times higher in the two hours after an angry outburst, and the risk of stroke increased three-fold. What’s the connection? Anger results in the increased production of stress hormones called catecholamines. These hormones increase blood pressure and play a role in the development of artery-clogging plaque, which over the course of many years can lead to coronary artery disease. “But the harmful effects of anger can also occur quickly,” says Johns Hopkins expert Ilan Wittstein, M.D. “A sudden surge of catecholamines during fits of anger can cause heart attacks, lethal heart rhythms and rapid weakening of the heart muscle itself, a condition known as stress cardiomyopathy or broken heart syndrome that occurs primarily in women.” 42

Step back
Taking a brief time-out from a situation that makes you mad can help you think through it more logically. Count to 10 or walk away. This simple step can help you break a habit of hair-trigger reactions.
Aim for assertive, not aggressive You can stand up for yourself and make your feelings known without shouting, pointing fingers, making threats and shaking your fist.
Talk to your doctor
In addition to managing the heart risk factors you’re capable of controlling, such as high cholesterol, if you have a history of heart disease and trouble managing anger, there’s some evidence that betablockers may reduce your risk of heart attack.
