“The Gift” (R) In this psychological thriller, there’s just something so nerve-wracking about somebody trying too hard to be your friend. Simon and Robyn (Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall) are a lovely young couple who recently moved from Chicago to Los Angeles. A chance encounter puts them in touch with Gordo (Joel Edgerton), an acquaintance from Simon’s high school— ”Gordo the Weirdo” they called him. Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) grew up an orphan, married the perfect woman, had a baby, became a champion and then lost everything. To save his daughter from being a ward of the state, Billy has to get a new manager (Forrest Whitaker) and get back in the ring.

He invited the neighboring Wampanoag Indians to the feast. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • Mashed potatoes, pumpkin pies, popcorn, milk, corn on the cob and cranberries were not foods

THANKSGIVING FACTS THROUGHOUT HISTORY • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. • Abraham Lincoln issued a “Thanksgiving Proclamation” on October 3, 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920s. • Congress passed a law on December 26, 1941, ensuring that all Americans would celebrate a unified Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November every year.

In the USA, Veterans Day annually falls on November 11. This day is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which ended the World War I hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany in 1918. Veterans are thanked for their services to the United States on Veterans Day. VETERANS DAY HONORS THOSE WHO SERVED THE UNITED STATES IN ALL WARS. OBSERVANCE Veterans Day is intended to honor and thank all military personnel who served the United States in all wars, particularly living veterans. It is marked by parades and church services and in many places the American flag is hung at halfmast. A period of silence lasting two minutes may be held at 11am. Some schools are closed on Veterans Day, while others do not close, but choose to mark the occasion with special assemblies or other activities. Veterans Day is officially observed on November 11. However, if it falls on a week day, many communities hold their celebrations on the weekend closest to this date. This is to enable more people to attend and participate in the events. Federal Government offices are closed on November 11. HISTORY On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect. On November 11, 1919, Armistice Day was commemorated for the first time. In 1919, President Wilson proclaimed the day should be “filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory”. There were plans for parades, public meetings and a brief suspension of business activities at 11am. commemorated with prayer and thanksgiving. The Congress also requested that the president should “issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.” An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) was approved on May 13, 1938, which made November 11 in each year a legal holiday, known as Armistice Day. This day was originally intended to honor veterans of World War I. A few years later, World War II required the largest mobilization of servicemen in the history of the United States. In 1954, the veterans service organizations urged Congress to change the word “Armistice” to “Veterans”. Congress approved this change and on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor all American veterans, wherever and whenever they had served. In 1968 the Uniforms Holiday Bill (Public Law 90-363 (82 Stat. 250)) made an attempt to move Veterans Day to the fourth Monday of October. The bill took effect in 1971. However, this caused a lot of confusion as many states disagreed with this decision and continued to hold Veterans Day activities on November 11. In 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed Public Law 94-97 (89 Stat. 479), which stated that Veterans Day would again be observed on November 11 from 1978 onwards. NOVEMBER 2015

Greeks’ definition of happiness: “The joy you feel striving toward your potential.” Happiness in this definition cannot be stripped from meaning and from growth. This definition changes the way we pursue happiness and is linked to all four of the sustainers of happiness. Joy is something we can experience in the ups and downs of life, even when things are not pleasurable. We feel happiest when we feel we are growing in our relationships or our ability to change the world for the positive or when we see life as a challenge instead of a threat. HAPPINESS VERSUS PLEASURE We must not confuse having work, stress and challenge as the opposite of happiness. In fact, happiness requires all of those because those are necessary to achieve our potential. It’s time to move away from defining happiness as simply pleasure, and know, like the ancient Greeks, that it’s so much deeper: It’s the joy we feel when we’re striving toward our potential. So, go out into the world and continue this conversation about redefining happiness with your family, friends, co-workers, neighbors—anyone who will talk to you. Q: Can you address the ongoing problem of cats that are being abandoned or released outside to fend for themselves when their owners are placed in an assisted-living facility, nursing home or pass away, and the family is not interested in doing what is right for the beloved pet of their family member? What options are available for this pet? Rita and Michael, via email A: Definitely, and it’s a bigger problem than many realize. Many adult children don’t anticipate assisted care for their parents or end-of-life planning for them. The situation is difficult no matter what, and too often, pets are forgotten as families try to find solutions. Here are a few available options worth considering: • Plan ahead. Pet owners themselves (at all ages) should consider the “what-if” scenarios and have a plan in place for their pet’s care. Make a will, discuss a pet’s care with family members and put your wishes in writing. • Choose a pet “godparent.” Ask a reliable family member or friend if they would commit to caring for your pet should it become necessary. • Look for pet-friendly senior care facilities. It may take a bit of searching, but some facilities allow well-behaved smaller pets.

The CDC has a timely message for seniors: The use antiviral medications for the flu cuts the length of hospital stays for those who are hospitalized with the flu, and reduces the risk of needing care after discharge. The last thing seniors need this winter is catching the flu. It hits seniors harder than any other age group, with 80-90% of flu-related deaths being in people age 65 and older. The study cited by the CDC says that the earlier the antiviral medications are started, the better they work. The key is seeing your doctor right away if you think you have the flu, because the medications are available by prescription only. Antiviral drugs can be taken as liquid, pills, an inhaled powder or intravenously. The CDC says even with antiviral medications, it’s still important to get annual flu shots. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer. Additionally, eat healthy food, drink plenty of water and get enough sleep.

• Begin by picking up all items you can see that are not in their place. If they belong in another room, place them in your basket until your reach the room the item belongs in. My recipe for Slow-Cooked Burrito Filling is an easy way to prepare burritos for a weeknight meal or a weekend crowd. SLOW-COOKED BURRITO FILLING You can put this filling into a bowl instead of a tortilla and finish it with your favorite toppings. INGREDIENTS 1 to 1 1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts, chicken thighs, or a mix, cut into 2-inch pieces 1 1/2 tablespoons chili powder 1/2 tablespoon cumin 2 teaspoons salt 1 (14.5-ounce) can hot or medium diced tomatoes with jalapeno peppers, plus juice 1 cup chicken stock, divided, plus more if needed 1 cup brown rice 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed

DIRECTIONS 1. Combine the chicken pieces, chili powder, cumin, salt and diced tomatoes together in the bowl of a 2 1/2- to 3 1/2-quart slow cooker until all of the pieces are coated. Add 1/2 cup of chicken stock or more as needed to ensure the chicken is covered. Cover with the lid and cook on low for 3 to 4 hours. 2. Remove the lid and add the rice, black beans, frozen corn and the remaining chicken broth. Replace the lid and continue cooking on low for another 3 to 4 hours. Check the rice periodically in the last hour of cooking, stirring once or twice to make sure rice cooks evenly and adding more chicken broth if the mixture seems dry. Cooking is done when the rice is tender. (If the rice is done while there still is liquid left in the slow cooker, remove the lid and cook on high to let the liquid evaporate.) 3. Roll the chicken filling and your choice of optional ingredients into a warm tortilla and form a burrito, or put the filling into a bowl and add your choice of toppings. Serves 6 to 8.

One of those things may be the good friends you share drinks with on the patio each afternoon. Try this Ginger Rum Shandies recipe to shake up the beverage routine. Total Time: 25 min Prep: 5 min Cook: 20 min Yield: 4 drinks Ingredients 10 thin slices peeled ginger, plus more for grating 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup apple juice 6 ounces spiced rum, preferably Sailor Jerry 2 cups wheat beer, preferably Hoegaarden Apple slices, for garnish Directions Make the ginger syrup: Combine the sliced ginger, sugar and 1 cup of water in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves; reduce the heat to medium and cook until syrupy, 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and let cool. For each cocktail, combine 2 tablespoons each of the ginger syrup and apple juice, 1 1/2 ounces rum and 3 or 4 gratings of ginger in a cocktail shaker with ice. While Americans tend to associate the holidays with togetherness, joyful occasions and feelings of warmth and happiness, the season can also worsen feelings of loneliness and isolation for some people—especially older adults. Loneliness is not only bad for seniors’ emotional health; it can affect their physical wellbeing, as well. “The holidays can present families with an opportunity to spot signs of loneliness in their older family members and take steps to do something about it,” says Dr. Kevin O’Neil, chief medical officer of Brookdale Senior Living. “Isolation and loneliness in seniors can lead to debilitating depression, high blood pressure, dementia and shorter life spans. Time and time again we see that when seniors overcome loneliness, make new friends and feel a part of a caring community, they’re happier and their physical health improves.” Research illustrates the link between loneliness and the advancement of dementia, deterioration

of physical health and shortened lifespans. Conversely, multiple studies show feeling connected and happy is good for your health and can lead to a longer lifespan. What’s more, happiness really can be contagious. “Social connections are vital for people of all ages,” O’Neil says. “Emotional ties are even more important for seniors, yet they are also more vulnerable to losing those bonds through the death of a spouse, grown children busy with their own lives or the relocation of a long-time friend who moves closer to be near their own family.” Dr. O’Neil recommends some tactics to help seniors combat loneliness: • GET MOVING. Physical exercise increases the body’s level of “feel good” hormones, and can contribute to improved sleep, as well as fewer aches and pains. Seniors should get 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise per day. • WATCH A FUNNY MOVIE OR TV SHOW TOGETHER. Laughter’s positive effects on the mind and body are well documented. Laughing together improves mood and can make people feel more connected. • MAKE NEW CONNECTIONS. Ask a neighbor to go for a walk with you. Seal all but an inch or so of the bag. As you lower the bag into the water (zipper top up) the air will escape through the unsealed portion. THE HEYDAY OF STEAMBOATS ON THE COLORADO Looking at the diminished flow of the Colorado River near Yuma today it is hard to visualize steamboats plying its waters, carrying freight and passengers from the mouth of the river to Fort Yuma. However, in the mid1800s side- and sternwheel steamboats with names like Uncle Sam, Esmeralda, Mohave, Gila, General Jessup, Explorer and Cocopah were a familiar sight on the river.

Although the Uncle Sam was the first to appear in 1852, the Explorer was probably the most unique. Owned by the government, the iron hulled Explorer went into service in 1857. Her mission: to determine whether the Colorado could be navigated as far upstream as the confluence of the Virgin River. Ill-fated from the beginning, the Explorer was eventually sold to a Captain Johnson who used her as a barge to haul wood on the Gila River. In 1864 Explore broke free from a tree where workers had tied her and sailed off toward the Colorado but a prevailing current carried her deep into a slough. Before she could be rescued

the river changed course leaving her landlocked and forgotten. In 1930 the Explore once again made news when a Yuma newspaper reported that her rusting hull had been discovered nine miles from the riverbed some 16 miles

below San Luis by a group of surveyors. The coming of the railroad in 1877 and construction of Laguna Dam in 1907 wrote paid to the romantic era of steamboat traffic on the Colorado River.
