TRAVEL
GET-A-WAY
Book a quick trip, or book a staycation!
Sometimes you just need to get out of town, and you really can take a last-minute trip without paying premium prices. But if you just need a break from the office and don’t want the hassle of travel, there’s always another way to go: home! Use these tips for saving big on a last-minute booking or creating a fabulous “staycation.”
Troll the travel websites
Sites such as Expedia.com, Priceline. com, and Travelocity.com are treasure troves for last-minute travelers. A few clicks will provide you with the latest transportation and accommodation availability, as well as deals on bundled packages and allinclusive vacations.
Register for last-minute travel e-mail blasts
Those same travel websites, and most airlines, offer weekly e-mail newsletters that include up-to-the-minute deals on flights, cruises, hotels, and more. If you’re flexible about where and when you travel, finding a great deal to an exciting destination can be as easy as checking your inbox.
Play tourist
Since Pheonix has experienced tremendous growth, surely you haven’t done everything there is to do. Check out the latest gallery opening, grab tickets to a matinee, hop on a tour bus, or take a trip to your local historical centers. You’ll see the Valley of the Sun from a whole new perspective.
Don’t check e-mails
Set an out-of-office reply or a vacation message on your work and personal e-mail accounts and don’t peek until you “return” from your vacation.
Don’t tackle your to-dos
It’s easy to think that your time spent at home can be used to reorganize, clean, and do a few home improvements, but a vacation is no time to do extra work. If you were on an actual vacation, would you be upset that your floors at home weren’t being scrubbed? No way. Let things around the house stay as they are. Or, for a real treat, hire a cleaning service to come spruce the place up while you’re out on the town.
Order in
Hate to cook? Then don’t do it. It’s rare that you would be cooking your own food if you were out of town, so enjoy the benefits of ordering in or grabbing your favorite take-out.
Turn off your phone
Pretend that you’re half a world away with little access to your phone. Leave a voicemail that says that you’re on vacation and will only be checking messages when you get the chance. Forgetting about your phone will keep you focused on your main goal-relaxation.

VET POST
ADVOCATING FOR YOURSELF
The person who ran the tests quickly passed along the results to a surrogate provider...who sat on them for 28 days.
Tips for getting the best care
It’s easy to get lost in the shuffle of medical care. When something is wrong, you need to know what it is, and quickly. That didn’t happen with a veteran in New York not long ago. For that veteran, there was a delay in finding out about his abnormal test results. Policy says if the results require intervention or action, the patient needs to hear from the ordering provider within seven days, but in his case, there was a 36-day delay!
After handing them off to the next in line in the hierarchy (the chief of staff), the veteran was finally notified eight additional days later! What this demonstrates is that you, the patient, must ask questions. Specifically you need to know: When will the medical test results be ready? Who will have those results? Get the name and phone number. If you’re transported by ambulance and can communicate, ask where you’re being taken. The more medical people you query along the way, the better your chances of hearing what you need to know.

CARING
TAKING CARE OF LOVED ONES
Navigating the challenges
As the population of older U.S. adults grows, more Americans are taking on long-term caregiving duties for loved ones. An estimated 43.5 million adults in the U.S. have provided unpaid care in the past 12 months, according to AARP. “While caregiving presents many opportunities for growing strong bonds with loved ones, the work itself can be demanding, eventually taking a toll on those shouldering the burden,” says Lakelyn Hogan. Hogan shares the following tips to navigate the challenges. Use online resources To fully advocate for your loved one, it’s necessary to understand his or her medical conditions and the specific areas where extra help is needed. Doing so will help you secure support services, get information from doctors, ensure medications are being administered safely and even help you make appropriate meal and transportation arrangements. of condition-specific information can also double as a place for finding care and support. Search for innovative tools Innovative companies are taking note of the needs of caregivers, and are designing everyday products to help them make daily tasks easier and more comfortable for all involved. In the realm of personal care, this trend is especially important: personal care activities were identified in an AARP survey as among the most challenging daily activities to manage. Make space for yourself Prioritizing your own health and happiness is critical. After all, if your health suffers, it could make it impossible for you to continue caregiving. Rely on family and friends or a part-time professional to step in and give you a chance to recharge. Use the personal time to read, journal, exercise, take a nature walk, visit your doctor or simply meet with friends. You may also benefit from joining a caregivers’ support group. Luckily, social media has made it simple for people to find one another and connect. While the roles and responsibilities of caregiving vary, leveraging the resources designed to universally assist caregivers can help you navigate the many challenges of daily life.
