Is it safe?

Q: I saw a warning circulating on social media that said many household disinfecting cleaners are toxic to cats. Is this true? I’ve been spending extra time cleaning my apartment with germ-killing cleaners, and I’m worried. Is it possible I’ve poisoned my two cats? A: It’s true, to an extent. Household cleaners containing phenol, like Lysol and Pine-sol, are widely used to disinfect surfaces that would not respond well to bleach, like wood floors and furniture. Phenol can irritate the nasal passages and cause breathing problems in pets. If your cats are not wheezing or showing other unusual behaviors, they’re probably fine, but you can always call their veterinarian to make sure. It’s a good idea to put your cats into a different room before using any kind of cleaning product. Spray cleaners can linger in the air for a few minutes, and heavily scented cleaners, even when diluted in water, can irritate pets.

TIP 1 A hanging shoe rack is a handy place to keep office supplies and items you use around the house, but don’t know where to store them. TIP 2 If you fill a flowerpot with clean sand, you can use it to store your garden hand tools. It looks cute, and they are accessible, too! TIP 3 Clean the cracks in your keyboard with a paperclip covered by tissue. TIP 4 If you leave a load of laundry too long in the washer, you can re-run it and add a cup of white vinegar to the load to kill the musty smell of potential mildew.

LOVE TAKES COURAGE “Love was a leap into the unknown, not a cautious dipping of the toe.” Martina Boone

The word courage has a Latin root, cor, which means heart. The heart has long been a metaphor used to depict inner strength. And I’m not sure if there’s anything that requires more courage and inner strength these days than to love. To open your heart to someone, knowing that it might get broken. To share your deepest needs and desires, not knowing if they will be met. To love, even when that act of love may not be reciprocated, at least not in the same way it was given. It feels like a leap of faith to love someone deeply. There are no guarantees. And yes, sometimes love hurts. That’s why love takes courage.

Here’s what being courageous in love can look like: Saying I love you…and meaning it. Being the one to initiate a hug or a touch. Forgiving without anyone asking to be forgiven. Having the difficult conversations. Being vulnerable. Telling our partners what we need to feel loved, fulfilled and cared for. Sharing our dreams… and fears. VA police now carry opioid-reversing medication to combat overdose. These two steps lowered VA costs by $24 million. • Technological advances have allowed eyeglasses to be created in minutes rather than a whole day. • Over 350,000 VA customer-service employees were trained on modernized and improved data systems, allowing real-time feedback. • Processing times for disability compensation claims were reduced by automating claims. • A group of VA individuals analyzed criminal information and provided assistance to nab five criminals involved in identity theft and fraud schemes targeting VA employees and veterans.
