HOROSCOPE

WHAT IS THE FORECAST FOR TODAY?

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Trying to resolve a problem with a longtime friend can be difficult. Consider bringing in an impartial third party to help reach an acceptable solution. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time to assess your current career situation. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) With education being a dominant part of life, one of the things you might want to think about is taking courses to enhance your skills. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might have a problem trying to stay focused on a matter you’d rather not deal with. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An unforeseen complication creates a difficult problem. Things get resolved once you turn negative situations into positive experiences. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Doing the right thing at the right time helps you deal with a particularly troublesome situation. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A change doesn’t turn out quite as you’d hoped. Nevermind! Just treat yourself to a healthy dollop of that Aries self-confidence. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The support you might have hoped for in a difficult situation might not be there. But you have the strength to rely on your own capabilities if you must. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A disagreement with a friend can be painful, but it also can be a learning lesson. Insist on a full and complete airing of views. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A stalled relationship can be restarted with some give and take on both sides. While it could take more time than you expect, don’t rush it. LEO (July 23 to August 22) An opportunity to move a long-stalled project might be opening up for the Big Cat. Be prepared to spend more time dealing with family matters. VIRGO (August 23 of September 22) Use your Virgo organizational skills to line up support to help you deal with a sticky problem.

Q: I was recently given a Wells Fargo belt buckle that is identified as being made by Tiffany and Company. What can you tell me about it? — Keith, Crescent Valley, B.C., Canada. A: According to the Antique Trader Guide to Fakes and Reproductions by Mark Chervenka, your belt buckle is a knock-off and was probably made during the 1960s. In addition to Wells Fargo buckles, others also were issued, including ones featuring highly collectible names such as Winchester, Coca-Cola and Abraham Lincoln. Q: I began collecting Hallmark ornaments several years ago, and I am always looking for them in shops and at garage sales. Can you recommend a good, reliable price guide that I can stick in my purse? —Union, Lynchburg, VA.

The older we get, the cloudier our thinking becomes. It happened again today. A patient fell for a “cleaning and exam special” advertisement. He came back surprised that the $49.00 special found enough treatment to cost him $10,000! The cleaning took about 15-20 minutes whereas in our office, it takes the better part of an hour. WAYS TO WELCOME A SHELTER DOG INTO YOUR FAMILY

Are you looking for a new best friend for your family, but don’t want to start from scratch with a new puppy? Adopting a furry friend from a local animal shelter might be the perfect choice for you. Shelters are full of lovable dogs of all breeds, sizes and ages deserving of a good home and a family of their own. The ASPCA says nearly two million dogs are adopted into new homes each year. Choosing the right dog is just the beginning of the adoption process. The first several weeks after a pet is adopted are critical. During this time, it’s important to build a relationship and lay the groundwork for a lifelong connection. STEPS FOR SUCCESS It’s also important to create a pet-friendly environment. Keep items that may be harmful—such as chemicals and certain poisonous plants—out of reach from your new pet. Additionally, it might be wise to tuck away electrical cords and other objects that might be tempting for your new friend to chew. Also, if

certain areas of your home are off limits, by all means pick up a couple of baby gates to create boundaries for your furry friend. It goes without saying you should expect accidents— especially while house training any new dog. Even if a dog has previously been potty trained, the stress of transitioning into a new home can lead to accidents, so keep this in mind and be sure to provide your new pet plenty of opportunities to do their “business” outside. Finally, animals thrive when they know what to expect. Create a schedule early on for walks, feeding time and training so both of you can settle into a routine that feels a bit more familiar. Remember to approach training your adopted friend with patience. Without knowing how your pet was previously treated or trained, it can be difficult to predict how he will respond in his new environment. While introducing a new furry friend to the family may require a lot of attention at first, after a while, you will find it hard to remember life without your new four-legged friend.

FAMILY FUN

By Donna Erickson

And it’s a unique way to recall a trip to Clearwater Beach, Florida, in 2013, or Santa Monica, California, in 2015. For indoor fun with your grandkids, use some sticks and stones for crafting. Here are two ideas:

Set up a nature discovery nook

Cherish the memories you’ve made with your grandchildren with this simple idea.

Set aside a space on your kitchen counter or a table in your family room to showcase your grandkids’ summer nature collectibles. The miniature museum of the natural wonders your grandkids discovered can be a conversation starter when your friends visit. Coach your grandkids to learn more about their treasure, and share with others why the object captured their imagination. Best of all, this collection zone will be a constant reminder of the time you spent together discovering the mysteries and beauty of the world you explored together. If your family traveled to new places this past summer, or if you plan to take weekend trips this fall, items from those trips can be displayed in attractive ways. If you have collected sand from different beaches, for example, layer it in a clean, clear recycled jar. It’s fun to see the range of colors and types of sand from beach to beach.

•Flat rocks aren’t just for skipping across the surface of a lake. Make a turtle! Choose a flat oval stone for the body and glue small ones underneath, stretching out to the sides for four feet and a tail, with a larger one for a head. Add two pebbles for eyes. •Make a twig vase with a recycled tin can. Use shears to cut similar-width branches an inch or so longer than the height of the can. Place two large rubber bands around the outside of the can, one near the top and one near the bottom. Insert branches side by side, as if building a twig fence around the can. Wind twine or raffia over the rubber bands to cover them and tie the project off with a knot. To find more of Donna Erickson’s creative family recipes and activities, visit www.donnasday.com.

Jesse Ramirez, a native Arizonan, is passionate about feeding people in FOOD BANK need. Not long after he started the View Community Food Bank, NEEDS YOU Valley Jesse and his team were feeding 300 people daily in 2007. “He says, 48% of his clients are senior citizens over 65, and 32% are either children or adults in their 20s.” Each week the food bank distributes 34,000 pounds of food. You may ask, Where does the food come from? Jesse say’s most of the food is donated from private food drives, churches, Sam’s Club, local scouting groups, private donations, businesses and organizations. Each food box contains fresh produce, can goods, beans, rice, pasta, meat and dry foods. Unlike other foodbanks, Jesse says, “We don’t charges clients a fee for the boxes, they are distributed for free to those in need.” The main purpose of the Valley View Community Food Bank is to supply people in the community with wholesome food.” Jesse says, “When you combine current unemployment rates with higher food costs, the number of families needing assistance continues to grow. In order to keep up with the need, we honestly could use some additional help.” If you are interested in helping Jesse’s team meet the need, you can participate in various ways including, volunteering at the food bank or donating food (no dented cans) or money. Spy (PG-13) Melissa McCarthy stars as a CIA agent is launched from her usual office-work into the field of high-stake espionage. Susan (McCarthy) normally watches over her CIA colleagues, feeding information from a secluded office. When all the more Bond-like agents fall, the Company’s best bet is to send in Susan, the last person the bad guys would suspect of being a spy. Jason Statham does an excellent parody of his usual character, and Rose Byrne nails it as a haughty Euro-villain who trades eloquent insults with the more grounded McCarthy.

TIME TO DOWNSIZE? How to Plan for Your Next Home

Knowing when it’s time to move yourself or a loved one to a smaller or more accessible home, or even an assisted living center, can be tough. There are some signs that can help aid you in identifying when the time is right. Factors such as age, health and living situation can be signals it’s time to look for other living arrangements. For example, your house is more than 20 years old, there’s a good chance you may struggle to maintain your home. For 81-year-old Ned Kraft, he knew the time was right to consider living elsewhere after suffering a broken leg as a result of a fall. Living in a two-story home with his wife was no longer an option, and Kraft felt an urgent need to move into something smaller to manage his family’s lifestyle and overall well-being. He says, “With simple upkeep and maintenance becoming difficult, living in a safer home environment became the top priority.” If you need to sell your house quickly and get into a more suitable living situation. Here are a few steps to help with the transition:

Determine How Much Space You Need: Smaller homes and apartments are easier to maintain, and taking into account your lifestyle can help determine what to look for in your next home. If you’re home a majority of the day or expect to have gatherings and guests often, you may want something a bit bigger. If your health is a concern or you’d rather not have to worry about tasks such as yard work, something smaller or without stairs—such as a first floor apartment, may be more your speed. Sell Your Current Home: Working with professional to put your home on the market and help sell your home to potential buyers. Eliminate clutter around your home, and fix those to-do items that have never been done. A clean house makes for a quick sale. Also, if you need to make a home improvement reach out to a trusted source in your community and get things fixed. The money you spend now will help expedite the sale of your home when it’s time to go on the market. Take It or Leave It: Take inventory of everything you’ve accumulated over decades and decide what to keep, pass down, put in storage and or sell. Once you’ve determined what to do with your possessions, take the time to discard things you no longer need or want before you move, as it will make your transition easier.

TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR TRAVEL Your diabetes shouldn’t be the reason you hesitate to take a great trip. For people all across the country, October is peak travel season. Don’t let managing your diabetes stop you from taking a trip! To help you plan smart the American Diabetes Association suggests: • Visit your doctor. Schedule an appointment with your doctor about a month before your trip. Think of it as a check-up just for your diabetes. • Pack smart. If you’re traveling for one week, pack enough diabetes supplies for two. • Prepare for emergencies. When it comes to vacations, picture the best and plan for the worst. Having an emergency plan is essential. • Take your medical ID everywhere. As someone with diabetes, your medical ID should be part of your everyday attire. • Plan an arrival kit. Regardless of how you plan to travel, you’ll probably be excited to get out and stretch your legs at your journey’s end and explore. For more helpful tips visit Diabetes.org. www.thegrandseason.com

VETERANS POST By Freddy Groves

Allison Hickey, undersecretary for benefits at the Department of Veterans Affairs, says the number of backlogged (older than 125 days) disability claims has reduced to 98,535—the first time since 2013 that it’s been below 100,000. The number of total claims stands at 362,799 disability and pension claims, with an average of 105 days pending. Back in August, processing took an average of 149 days, and when you take all of 2015 claims as a group, the average processing time was at 172 days. The VA’s Office of the Inspector General is still looking into allegations documents were shred, unopened or returned to vets to intentionally delay service. These actions would mean the information was never added to a patient’s file, which could affect claims because they would be incomplete. In at least one office, there hadn’t been a records management officer for seven months to oversee any shredding. If you are having processing delays on your claims, be persistent and by all means don’t give up. In the case of working with the VA the squeaky wheel does get the grease.

Never before has there been a way for the nearly 6.5 million stroke survivors in the United States to rally together as they travel the path toward recovery. Unlike other survivor communities, there is no, symbol that survivors and the general public can identify with when it comes to stroke recovery. The National Stroke Association is changing that by supporting the Come Back Strong campaign, the first national movement to rally for stroke recovery. “This is a history-making moment for the stroke community,” said Matt Lopez, CEO of National Stroke Association. “Survivors and their caregivers have been asking for a unified message to support them as they recover from a stroke. The movement, created to raise awareness about the fifth-leading cause of death in the United States, is centered on a blue return symbol. Intentionally left open, it represents the drive for stroke survivors to come back strong and return to their former self, or a new normal. There are several resources to help you support the cause. Visit www.Stroke.org to make a donation or participate in upcoming community events.

DOLLARS & SENSE

INSURANCE COVERAGE IS ESSSENTIAL FOR FINANCIAL SUCCESS.

Successful financial planning means establishing goals, using the right tools and updating the plan to ensure it continues to meet your needs. Some of the most useful tools can be health, dental, life and disability insurance, all of which help protect families and preserve assets. “Financial planning is crucial for everyone. Defining goals for each stage of your life, whether it’s college or retirement, and outlining how you will reach those goals helps ensure success,” says Dan Danford, founder of Family Investment Center. The financial responsibilities of a single person are very different than those of a parent with three young children or a middle-aged couple who have retired. In each scenario, individuals need to determine which tools will best help them achieve their goals. Health and dental insurance are important to people in every phase of life. Securing adequate coverage not only protects your health — it can protect your assets and keep your financial plan on track if a catastrophe occurs. If basic health coverage doesn’t include vision and dental, these can be added on to provide important preventive care that helps keep expenses at bay. Vision checkups not only ensure good eye health, they are critical for success at school and at work. No one likes to think about becoming disabled, yet accidents and critical illnesses can happen anywhere, anytime and to anyone, and result in loss of income. Life insurance is a great way for families with children to ensure that youngsters’ needs are met if one or both parents were to die. And while single 20-somethings may think life insurance isn’t necessary, they could leave their own parents financially strapped if they have co-signed any loans for their children. Yes, parents want to protect their children from financial hardship, but they also have a responsibility to take care of themselves. A good thing to remember: Students can take out loans for education but you can’t take out loans for retirement. If you are currently retired, it’s important to keep reviewing your policies closely. Take a moment to have your financial planner summarize each piece of your portfolio, so you can make sure you and your family’s needs are cared for when the time arises that you may not be able to care for yourself. Advisors strongly suggest couples purchase long-term care insurance prior to retirement since unforeseen illness can drain a family’s finances faster than any other life event. If you haven’t taken a moment to evaluate your insurance coverage, take time in the next few weeks to examine your policies to secure your financial future. www.thegrandseason.com

KITCHEN DIVA Judy Wicks has been a leader in the “slow food” movement on the East Coast for more than 30 years. When she opened The White Dog in Philadelphia in 1983, it was a tiny muffin shop on the first floor of her historic Victorian brownstone. As her business grew, Wicks turned the muffin shop into a restaurant. She hired a chef who specialized in showcasing fresh, local meats and produce. The menu is a tribute to a visionary woman’s desire to support the community she loves.

Strawberry Parfait with Homemade Drop Biscuits and Lemon-Scented Chantilly featured at The White Dog restaurant Homemade Drop Biscuits 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon sugar 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter 1 cup whole milk Directions: 1. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar in a bowl. Cut the cold butter into small pieces; add to flour mixture. Using your hands, work the butter into the flour until pea-sized chunks of butter remain. 2. Add the milk all at once, and carefully fold in using a spatula. Scoop even spoonfuls of batter onto a lined sheet pan, and bake at 350 F for 10 minutes, or until golden. Set aside to cool completely. Makes 6 biscuits. Lemon Chantilly Cream 2 cups heavy cream plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar Zest from 1 lemon Directions: In a stand mixer or by hand, whip cream and sugar to firm peaks. Zest lemon over whipped cream and fold in. Set aside. Makes 1 cup. To assemble: 2 pints of local sliced berries Cut each biscuit in half lengthwise. Using a mason jar or bowl, layer the Lemon Chantilly Cream first, then half of a biscuit, followed by berries. Repeat until jars are full. Enjoy immediately or prepare ahead and refrigerate. Serves 4-6.

HERE’S A TIP!

to save the water wings to transport cruise or duty-free alcohol. Use blow-up arm floaties to protect your liquor bottles while being transported in luggage. Simply blow up the floatie to the appropriate size for the bottles you will be packing in your luggage. This not only keeps the alcohol safe, but protects the rest of your clothing from being stained.

TRY SOME OF THESE TIPS TO MAKE LIFE A LITTLE BIT EASIER

Wet weather can affect your outdoor appliances, making rust a problem. It can even happen to the metal end of a light bulb in an outdoor fixture. In order to make removal easier, coat threads of the light bulb with petroleum jelly to keep it from rusting and becoming hard to unscrew. To remove scuffs from linoleum floors, simply cut a small “X” into a tennis ball and push the tip of your broom handle into it. When you come across a black scuffs while sweeping, flip the broom and rub the spot with the tennis ball. Boots will be coming out of storage soon, while pool and beach supplies will be packed away for the winter. Use your pool noodles to help boots sit upright. Simply cut a pool noodle to the height of the boot top and insert. This will extend the life of your boots by keeping them from bending over. As you pack away your pool supplies, you might want

Got dogs? Here’s a great recipe to get the smell of skunk out: Mix 1 quart hydrogen peroxide (3 percent), 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 teaspoon liquid soap. Mix well and bathe pet in this solution, rubbing it into the coat and keeping away from the dog’s eyes. Since this mixture can’t be made ahead of time, it’s a wise to have the ingredients on hand if your curious pups try to befriend skunks. Is slime from bars of soap a problem in your bathroom? If so, rest your bar soap on a sponge. You won’t have a soap slime problem ever again, and the soap stays put. When the sponge starts to look questionable, you can replace it or just toss it in the wash with your towels. A great way to organize in the kitchen is to use the space on the inside of your cabinet doors. You can install a metal sheet (to stick magnetic items to), a chalkboard, a small rack or a section of a pocket organizer. The possibilities are endless.

Golf is a great way to have some fun and get fit at the same time, especially if you skip the golf cart and walk a few holes instead. It’s no secret, walking is one of the best ways to exercise for people of all ages. It’s easy on the joints, burns calories, and builds muscle and bone density. If you’re new to walking for fitness, start gradually and work your way up to 60 minutes of walking, three or four times a week, by adding a few minutes to your walks each time you head out. Training exercises not only improve your golf game, but they also help prevent injury. Golf injuries most often impact the ankles, hips and shoulders. You can do a number of exercises to help improve your strength and flexibility in these areas. Visit your local gym, and ask a trainer to develop a plan to keep you fit. Daily exercise can be your secret weapon to drop strokes off your golf game, and add more rounds to your life. For Advertising Information Call (623) 594-1630

MR. CLEAN By Andrea Davis

SIMPLE WAYS TO SOLVE PESKY PROBLEMS

Cleaning your house is a chore that takes you hours to complete. If you have the budget you can hire a cleaning service. Or, here are some great tips on how you can clean your house as fast as they do: Quickly dust. Cloths remove dust okay, but you can save a lot of time with a feather duster. These dusters are really efficient—especially for cleaning blinds, pictures and hard to reach areas. They’re also great for routine dusting or to quickly clean a room before company comes. Get shiny stainless steel. While stainless steel is beautiful, efficient and stain-resistant, it’s also quick to show smudges and fingerprints. One way to clean it is by pouring mineral oil on a cloth and wiping it across your countertops, sinks and other surfaces. Mineral oil repels water and increases resistance -- preventing sticky materials from attaching to the steel and cutting down on your future cleaning time.

OCTOBER 2015

Remove smells from the disposal. To quickly clean a smelly disposal, drop lemon or orange peels down the drain. Run the disposal for fifteen seconds with the water going at half-pressure, then drop some ice cubes in the disposal and turn it on again. Turn off the disposal, put the stopper over it and fill up your sink until it’s about half-full. Pull out the stopper and let the water flush out the disposal for a fresh scent. Streak-proof your windows. A paper towel and window cleaner doesn’t always cut it. If your windows are small, use newspaper to clean the glass and avoid streaks. If your windows are particularly large, the best approach is to use a squeegee. This cuts down on time and helps you reach the edges where dust can build up. Vacuum in half the time. To cover the most amount of carpeting in the least amount of time, utilize the central outlet in your home. By plugging your vacuum cleaner into the central outlet, you save time on re-plugging it -- time you can spend continuing to vacuum. If your vacuum has a particularly short cord, add an extension cord and hold it as you vacuum to avoid sucking it up. These are a few trick cleaning pros use to get through your house in a flash. By adding them to your own cleaning routine, you’ll spend less time working on your home and more time just enjoying it.

With the recent turbulence the stock market has experienced, keeping in touch with your financial FINANCIAL advisor is key to a healthy portfolio. FORUM Considering the latest Wall Street By Kate Warne roller coaster, you may need to take some actions to improve your portfolio’s longevity, so it’s probably IS YOUR time to call your financial advisor. FINANCIAL A snapshot of healthy market PORTFOLIO indicators: U.S. economic growth continues HEALTHY? at a modest pace. Despite the media headlines about how poorly the economy is doing, it has been resilient and continues to grow slightly faster than 2%. That has been enough to add an average of more than 200,000 jobs a month. More jobs can help boost consumer confidence and spending, giving companies the ability to hire more workers. This cycle has helped the economy grow in the past. Lower oil prices can help economic growth. Oil prices have dropped more than 50% from mid2014, bringing pain to oil-producing areas. But lower oil prices also have reduced gasoline prices. And historically, low oil prices have led to faster economic growth in the U.S. and in Europe, Japan and China. Developed market economies are improving. Economic growth is improving modestly in developed markets like Europe and Japan, but economic growth in many emerging markets is slowing. is the world’s second-largest economy, but is an emerging market. After under-performing for two years, foreign developed-market stocks outperformed U.S. stocks in the first half of 2015. Remember that stock performance is never guaranteed – stocks rise and fall without warning. We think improving earnings will drive stocks in 2015 and 2016, but it’s likely to continue to be a bumpier road ahead than over the past few years. What are investors watching closely? After watching the evening news, you may have some grave concerns about things you hear in the media. Make sure you don’t become overly concerned; instead, keep the following concerns in perspective, as decisions around your portfolio should not be made due to emotions. Low but rising interest rates – The Federal Reserve (Fed) has said it may raise short-term interest rates later this year if the economy continues to improve. Long-term rates are also likely to rise modestly and slowly, because interest rates in the rest of the world remain even lower, which will likely put downward pressure on U.S. rates. Stronger U.S. dollar – The U.S. dollar rose sharply compared to the value of most other currencies over the past year. A stronger dollar reduces the value of foreign earnings and also is a challenge for U.S. exports. As a result, many companies have blamed the stronger dollar for their lackluster results. Experts think the dollar is likely to continue to rise modestly as the U.S. starts to increase interest rates. Talk with your financial advisor about whether you should consider the following: Review your risk tolerance and goals – Make sure you’ve reviewed your financial goals and your comfort level with risk to ensure your portfolio has the mix of equity (stocks) and fixed income that’s appropriate for you. Realistic expectations – After three years of double-digit returns and almost four years without a stock market pullback of 10% or more, you may have been surprised by large market moves. Realistic expectations can help you stay invested when markets churn and avoid disappointment. Rebalance to an appropriate mix of stocks and bonds – Over time, the mix of stocks and bonds determines as much as 90% of portfolio performance. That’s why it’s one of your most important investment decisions. Historically, a portfolio with 65% in stocks and 35% in fixed income hasn’t had a negative five-year return since World War II, if rebalanced annually. Look for opportunities – You’ll always hear more about the troubled market indicators than the ones doing fine, so don’t overlook attractive opportunities in the market today, especially since many prices have declined by 10% or more. Maintaining communication with your financial advisor is critical to achieving your financial goals. While the market may get bumpy from time to time, don’t hesitate to reach out to your advisor to insure you are achieving the goals you desire. For Advertising Information Call (623) 594-1630

BUFFALO SOLDIERS ARRIVE IN ARIZONA

When the Civil War ended five U.S. Army regiments were sent west to protect settlers and help open up the territory. Among them were the 9th and 10th Cavalry, two black units, heralding the beginning of the era of the “Buffalo Soldiers” in Arizona. The first units arrived at Fort Huachuca in Southern Arizona in 1892, with troops of the 9th Cavalry joining the 25th Infantry in 1898. It wasn’t until the arrival of the 10th Cavalry in December of 1913 that the era of the black soldier really began at Fort Huachuca. The men of the 10th were dubbed

IN SURPRISE

“Buffalo Soldiers” by the plains Indians because their curly black hair reminded them of buffalo. The nickname stuck. Maj. Gen. John B. Brook, USAF Retired, in an interview in Huachuca Illustrated, a magazine published by the Fort Huachuca Museum, described the scramble by junior officers of the 10th to find an atlas when word came that they were moving to Fort Huachuca. No one knew where Fort Huachuca was, let alone how to pronounce the name. Things haven’t changed much. In the 1950s a telephone information operator in Tucson was asked if she knew the name of the Fort in southern Arizona that sounded like a sneeze. Located at Sierra Vista, Fort Huachuca is the home of the U.S. Army Intelligence Center and the U.S. Army Network Enterprise Technology Command (NETCOM)/9th Army Signal Command.

AUTO TALK

DO YOU TAKE YOUR CAR’S “HEALTH” FOR GRANTED?

Do you know what to do when the check engine light comes on? While you know the importance of your car running well, do you ever worry about your car breaking down? Or have that sinking feeling you should have changed your oil sooner? If so, you’re not alone. For many consumers routine car maintenance can cause anxiety and stress. While knowledge is power, finding a mechanic you can trust or knowing the costs of your repairs are reasonable, sometimes provide the right excuse for ignoring the routine maintenance that will make your car reliable. Here are a few expert tips, resources and busted myths to prepare you with the information you need to make informed, confident decisions about car service: You probably don’t need to change your oil every 3,000 miles. Due to technology advancements, many auto manufacturers recommend changing oil at intervals of 7,500 miles or more for new cars. Does a dirty air filter really hurt performance? A clogged air filter won’t significantly affect fuel economy, but it can reduce acceleration from 6 to 11

percent, according to a U.S. Department of Energy Study. It’s a good idea to periodically visually check the engine air filter. Cars.com has launched a new “Service & Repair” feature that provides a fair price estimate for different types of service, ensure drivers never overpay for needed services. The online tool also helps drivers find local service providers and offers reviews from actual customers to help them find a quality mechanic. Don’t expect the tires that come with your new vehicle to last a long time. The reality of a tire’s life depends on many factors, including: the quality of the tire, whether it is an all-season, summer performance or winter tire, the type of vehicle and where and how it is driven. Make sure the tires on your car are right for the region and conditions you drive in. If the check engine light comes on and stays on it may possibly indicate a serious issue, a mechanic should look at the problem quickly. If the check engine light is flashing, find a place to park the vehicle and turn the engine off as quickly as you safely can. Ignoring your check engine light increases the likelihood of additional problems—and perhaps more expensive repairs. Taking care of routine auto care will not only save you money, but it will ultimately save you time and ensure your safety while driving your car. SOCIAL HOUR

IT ONLY TAKES A MOMENT TO MAKE SOMEONE FEEL SPECIAL

Finding quick ways to stay connected with your spouse or significant others can make difficult times less strained, and great times even more dynamic. Small emotional connections can keep a relationship from getting stuck in a rut. Whether you’ve been married for 35 years or dating for 35 days, here are some simple ideas that will make the time you invest together reap dividends for years to come. • Do something unexpected for your partner • Place a love note in a purse or pocket • Send a funny or romantic card by snail mail or e-mail • Learn how to give a great massage • Snuggle on the couch • Hold hands • Make eye contact when you talk • Leave a kind voice mail • Text a nice note • Cook a romantic dinner • Take a moment to look at the stars

• Ask questions about each other’s day • Listen completely to each other (put the phone down) • Smile at each other • Start a load of laundry • Fold a basket of clothes • Post photos on the bathroom mirror of photos from memories you’ve shared • Write a love note on the bathroom mirror • Write a love note on the sidewalk next to the car • Watch the sun rise or set • Take a walk together • Discover a new hobby • Say “Thank You” • Say “You’re Welcome” • Take time to talk before bedtime • Bring “Take Out” home from your favorite restaurant • Give your spouse a small token they can carry each day to think of you • Learn to say “I love you in a foreign language.” Use these tips for the next 30 days, and see if you can tell a difference in how you feel about your relationship. Experts say, it’s not the grand gestures that make relationships thrive, but rather consistently doing little things on a daily basis that build relational satisfaction.

COSTLY MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE WITH MEDICARE

Each day, thousands of people in the United States turn 65, and they’re faced with making choices about which Medicare program is right for them. Unfortunately, many people make costly mistakes, and end up paying too much for healthcare coverage. A study published by Health Affairs, a peerreviewed healthcare journal, estimated that more than 20 percent of people are paying at least $500 too much each year for their prescription drug Part D plans. Tricia Blazier, director of the Allsup Medicare Advisor says the study found that only five percent of Medicare beneficiaries chose the lowest cost Part D plan. Researchers also found that many people overpaid for a Medicare plan, missing out on other plans that would better meet their needs at less cost. She says, “You may have 20 or more plans to choose from with different features. These plans come with a wide range of costs, and the highest premiums are sometimes double the lowest.” If you are a baby boomer, here are a couple of costly and common mistakes you may have made with your Medicare coverage. • Using high-deductible health plans (HDHP). These plans carry restrictions for people who want to use Medicare. • Improperly delaying enrollment in certain parts of Medicare, if you fail to follow the process you will pay a penalty. Nearly 16 million people enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans in 2014, an increase of almost 20 percent since 2012, according to data provided by the Kaiser Family Foundation. Looking for shortcuts by choosing a family member or friend’s Medicare plan may lead to buyer’s remorse because one plan does not fit all. Some of the biggest mistakes happen when individuals turn 65 and enroll in Medicare for the first time. It can be challenging to find accurate, up-todate information in order to make fair comparisons among all the options. The time you spending researching the plans with the help of a Medicare specialist can mean big savings. Don’t get shortchanged as you join Medicare. The last thing you want to celebrate when you’re 65 is paying for health care coverage you don’t need.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Sometime in July of 1518, a strange malady STRANGE swept the town of BUT TRUE Strasbourg, France, By Samantha Weaver when hundreds of people were overcome with an irresistible compulsion to dance. Some believed that the only cure was to dance day and night until the compulsion ended, so city leaders hired musicians and set aside guild halls for dancing. According to eyewitness documents, people so enthralled expressed their misery but were unable to stop dancing. Those with weak hearts actually died while under the compulsion. As inexplicably as the malady struck, it ended in early September, after affecting about 400 residents. Those who study such things say that, on a percapita basis, residents of Louisiana consume twice as much electricity as residents of Maine. Of all the works of art stolen in Europe, 60 percent of it ends up in London. It was Che Guevara—physician, author, revolutionary, guerrilla leader and diplomat—who made the following sage observation: “Silence is argument carried out by other means.”
