“The Gift” (R) In this psychological thriller, there’s just something so nerve-wracking about somebody trying too hard to be your friend. Simon and Robyn (Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall) are a lovely young couple who recently moved from Chicago to Los Angeles. A chance encounter puts them in touch with Gordo (Joel Edgerton), an acquaintance from Simon’s high school— ”Gordo the Weirdo” they called him. Soon, Gordo’s being very generous with gifts, even dropping by their house unannounced in the middle of the day. Seems nice...but something is way off. The tension in the marriage, and the tension over what Simon could be hiding, will hang with you. “Southpaw” (R) Jake Gyllenhaal plays a boxer who must endure sparring round after round with almost every boxingmovie trope. Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) grew up an orphan, married the perfect woman, had a baby, became a champion and then lost everything. To save his daughter from being a ward of the state, Billy has to get a new manager (Forrest Whitaker) and get back in the ring.

Is this the beginning of the end of “The View”? For the past 20 years we’ve had to endure the revolving door of hosts. When we lost Rosie O’Donnell (twice), the wonderful Rosie Perez and Barbara Walters, it took some getting used to. Then ABC brought in new producer Dick Wolff, and he revamped the show with new, young and relatively unknown co-hosts, still, many viewers tuned in because of Whoopi Goldberg. Insiders insist

SENIOR DENTAL CARE

As we age, issues affect our mouth can increase or worsen. So it’s especially important to be aware of conditions associated with aging that can impact oral health. GUM (PERIODONTAL) DISEASE. Most people don’t realize how important it is to take care of their gums as well as their teeth. Gum disease is an infection of the gum tissue that supports the teeth and is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Your gums may begin to recede, pulling back from the teeth. TOOTH OR ROOT DECAY. Even at 55+ years, adults can still develop tooth decay, or root decay if gum recession has occurred. It is important for older adults to effectively clean the gums, the teeth and exposed root surfaces to remove dental plaque and food debris. Regular dentist visits can do more than keep your teeth healthy, they can tell a dentist a lot about your overall health. The best way to achieve good oral health is to prevent disease through daily brushing and flossing and visiting your dentist regularly.

We care about your FAMILY’s vision!

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION SURVIVING FLU SEASON

The CDC has a timely message for seniors: The use antiviral medications for the flu cuts the length of hospital stays for those who are hospitalized with the flu, and reduces the risk of needing care after discharge. The last thing seniors need this winter is catching the flu. It hits seniors harder than any other age group, with 80-90% of flu-related deaths being in people age 65 and older. The study cited by the CDC says that the earlier the antiviral medications are started, the better they work. The key is seeing your doctor right away if you think you have the flu, because the medications are available by prescription only. Antiviral drugs can be taken as liquid, pills, an inhaled powder or intravenously. The CDC says even with antiviral medications, it’s still important to get annual flu shots. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer. Additionally, eat healthy food, drink plenty of water and get enough sleep.

FAMILY FUN

FUN CONVERSATION STARTERS FOR THANKSGIVING

Get your guests talking about more than football during dinner

We all know that Thanksgiving is a perfect time to delve into conversations with our children, grandchildren and our neighbors. But, really, how many of us take the time before devouring the feast—which took most of the day to make—to reflect on the things for which we are truly thankful. This year, take a few moments before the guests arrive, to leave conversation starters around your home (under dessert plates, on the coasters, or use magic erase pens and write questions on the sliding glass door or mirror in the bathroom). While you take time to hit the market to find the right pens to direct your guests toward meaningful conversations between football, turkey and pumpkin pie, here are some questions to get you started: FOR GRANDCHILDREN TO GRANDPARENTS • What was your first Thanksgiving like? • Do you remember what your favorite food was? • What was your favorite thing to do with your family on Thanksgiving? • What is one of your favorite accomplishments in life?

FOR PARENTS TO ASK KIDS (OF ALL AGES) • Who is the funniest person at the table and why? • Pretend you just won $5 million. What’s the first thing you would buy? • What do you think is the hardest thing about being a parent? • What are you most thankful for this year? (You knew it was coming.) FOR KIDS TO ASK PARENTS • I f you could have named yourself, what name would you have chosen? • What do you think is the hardest thing about being a kid? • What thing about me is the most like you? • If you could eat only one food on this table for an entire year, which one would it be? FOR FRIENDS TO ASK FRIENDS • Which person here do you wish you knew better? • Which person at this table would make the best news anchor? • Who is the best golfer at this table? • Who is the best storyteller in the room? • What would you eat every month if it wasn’t Thanksgiving food? • What is your most creative leftover-turkey idea? Now that you’ve got the idea, turn these questions into a card game, a commercial break or a drinking game. Let the festivities begin!

STRANGE BUT TRUE

It was Pulitzer PrizeWinning American Journalist, Author and Historian Garry Wills who made the following sage observation: “Politicians make good company for a while just as children do— their self-enjoyment is contagious. But they soon exhaust their favorite subject— themselves.” You might be surprised to learn that, just as there is a market for used cars, there is a market for used roller coasters. With the skyrocketing costs of construction, it can be cheaper to disassemble, move and reassemble a coaster than to build one from scratch. Iconic songstress Madonna once worked as a coat-check girl at the Russian Tea Room. If all the salt in the world’s oceans were removed and spread out, it would cover all the world’s land in a layer 40 feet deep. Researchers using standard statistical methods have determined that it takes an average of 142 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. WWW.THEGRANDSEASON.COM

H HONORING ALL WHO SERVED H

VETERANS DAY

—————— UNITED STATES OF AMERICA ——————

In the USA, Veterans Day annually falls on November 11. This day is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which ended the World War I hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany in 1918. Veterans are thanked for their services to the United States on Veterans Day. VETERANS DAY HONORS THOSE WHO SERVED THE UNITED STATES IN ALL WARS. OBSERVANCE Veterans Day is intended to honor and thank all military personnel who served the United States in all wars, particularly living veterans. It is marked by parades and church services and in many places the American flag is hung at halfmast. A period of silence lasting two minutes may be held at 11am. Some schools are closed on Veterans Day, while others do not close, but choose to mark the occasion with special assemblies or other activities. Veterans Day is officially observed on November 11. However, if it falls on a week day, many communities hold their celebrations on the weekend closest to this date. This is to enable more people to attend and participate in the events. Federal Government offices are closed on November 11. HISTORY On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect. On November 11, 1919, Armistice Day was commemorated for the first time. In 1919, President Wilson proclaimed the day should be “filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory”. There were plans for parades, public meetings and a brief suspension of business activities at 11am. In 1926, the United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I and declared that the anniversary of the armistice should be FOR ADVERTISING INFORMATION CALL (623) 594-1630

commemorated with prayer and thanksgiving. The Congress also requested that the president should “issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.” An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) was approved on May 13, 1938, which made November 11 in each year a legal holiday, known as Armistice Day. This day was originally intended to honor veterans of World War I. A few years later, World War II required the largest mobilization of servicemen in the history of the United States. In 1954, the veterans service organizations urged Congress to change the word “Armistice” to “Veterans”. Congress approved this change and on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor all American veterans, wherever and whenever they had served. In 1968 the Uniforms Holiday Bill (Public Law 90-363 (82 Stat. 250)) made an attempt to move Veterans Day to the fourth Monday of October. The bill took effect in 1971. However, this caused a lot of confusion as many states disagreed with this decision and continued to hold Veterans Day activities on November 11. In 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed Public Law 94-97 (89 Stat. 479), which stated that Veterans Day would again be observed on November 11 from 1978 onwards. NOVEMBER 2015

altogether. More often than not, the biggest mistake player’s make is they use the wrong type of ball—if the golf ball does not suit the player or the circumstance, then the overall outcome of the shot will be adversely affected. Basically, there are two things to consider when choosing the correct ball: Are you a low handicap looking for spin and control? If so, choose a balata. This is a softer ball, and allows for more spin. If you are a higher handicap, you need more distance and durability. This is where a good twopiece ball will be best. This ball has a harder cover and less backspin, which allows you to hit it farther. It’s important to look at the weather and the course conditions when choosing a ball. Remember, you can cut a few strokes per round by choosing the correct ball. WWW.THEGRANDSEASON.COM

WHO WILL CARE FOR PETS WHEN YOU CAN’T?

Q: There is an ongoing problem of cats that are being abandoned or released outside to fend for themselves when their owners are placed in an assisted-living facility, nursing home or pass away. What options are available for these pets? -- Rita and Michael, via email

A: Definitely, and it’s a bigger problem than many realize. Many adult children don’t anticipate assisted care for their parents or end-of-life planning for them. The situation is difficult no matter what, and too often, pets are forgotten as families try to find solutions. Here are a few: • Plan ahead. Pet owners themselves (at all ages) should consider the “what-if” scenarios and have a plan in place for their pet’s care. Make a will, discuss a pet’s care with family and put your wishes in writing. • Look for pet-friendly senior care facilities. It may take a bit of searching, but some facilities allow wellbehaved smaller pets.

HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson

TRY SOME OF THESE TIPS TO MAKE LIFE A LITTLE BIT EASIER

TIP 1 Apply petroleum jelly to the panes of your windows before painting the trim. This works better than masking tape in many ways. It is easily removed, and even large paint flecks come right off. TIP 2 For easy-cleanup pancakes, use a turkey baster to “squirt” the batter in the griddle or skillet. No drips, and it usually results in a pretty good circle, too! TIP 3 When you are able to pick up extra meat at a great price, you want to be sure that while it’s frozen, it maintains its best taste. Use this tip to vacuum seal your meat without any special equipment! Add meat pieces to a plastic, zipper-top bag. Fill a large

pot several inches deep with water. Seal all but an inch or so of the bag. As you lower the bag into the water (zipper top up) the air will escape through the unsealed portion. When no air remains, seal the bag and then remove from the water. TIP 4 Have you tried this single-serving blender hack using a mason jar? Many standard-size blender blades can be screwed on to a pint Mason jar. If you’re one of the lucky ones, you can make single servings of smoothies to blend and go. TIP 5 Baby have diaper rash? One of the best remedies is “air time”—that is, letting baby go without a diaper for a bit. Another simple soother is a baking soda bath. Try adding 2-4 tablespoons of baking soda to Junior’s bathwater. TIP 6 After you’ve cooked your chicken whole, remove the meat and throw the bones and remaining carcass in the slow cooker with 3-4 cups of water. Let it cook on low for several hours for a spectacularly flavorful broth.

TRAVEL BUG

DO YOU WANT TO TRAVEL AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD?

VOLUNTOURISM 101 Do you want to travel and make a difference in the world? Have you ever considered if there’s more to a vacation than beachside sunsets and bus line tours? Have you ever wanted to immerse yourself in a culture, all while connecting with the people? The successful movie series “The Exotic Marigold Hotel” has created a movement among retirees to take volunteer adventures. WHAT IS VOLUNTOURISM? Voluntourism is the art of traveling and volunteering for local nonprofits or charities. You could volunteer for a single day or the duration of your vacation. Many people think voluntourism only happens while being abroad, however, there are countless opportunities for traveling and volunteering within the United States. WHAT TYPES OF ACTIVITIES DO VOLUNTOURISTS ENGAGE IN? Voluntourist activities may include helping build a school in Peru, visiting an orphanage and teaching

children in Haiti or travelling to Hawaii to help with ocean preservation. TIPS FOR PLANNING A VOLUNTOURISM ADVENTURE: 1. THINK ABOUT WHAT MATTERS TO YOU Take time to think about your passions and what matters most to you. According to Travelocity, the top five volunteer programs include medical/health, education, wildlife, conservation and orphanage. Knowing what cause is most meaningful to you is the best starting point. 2. BRAINSTORM WHERE YOU’D LIKE TO GO Do you want to help fight hunger domestically or abroad? You should consider other things you’d like to do beyond volunteering so you can find a location where you can do it all. 3. LOOK INTO VOLUNTOURISM ASSISTANCE What if you could have some or all of your voluntourism expenses covered? There are a number of organizations that can assist with your travel expenses—for example, Volunteer Forever offers travel scholarships several times a year. 4. ADOPT THE RIGHT MINDSET Some people go on vacation to be served, while voluntourists go on vacation to serve. While volunteering, you may have experiences very different from your normal day-to-day life. Maintain a positive attitude, be flexible and be willing to help and learn.

The King Automotive Repair Team Works Together Like a Well-Oiled Machine Owners Dan Groman and Doug Campbell faced a fork in the middle of the road when construction on the 303 was headed straight toward destroying the business they loved. The team realized they needed to find a solution to keep their dream alive. That solution coupled with motivation, drive, creativity and tenacity transformed a former Southwest Ambulance station in Sun City into King Automotive Repair almost two years ago. “Our crew has worked together for 17 years and in that time, our operation has become a well-oiled machine,” says Dan, co-owner and manager of King Automotive Repair. Co-owner Doug Campbell is the company’s lead mechanic. The team at King Automotive Repair services, repairs, rebuilds or replaces engines and transmissions for most vehicles. Dan says, “When you work with us, you’ll get the complete service of a team that understands your vehicle’s engine inside and out. We can take care of your engine no matter what type of vehicle you have.” Other services performed by King Automotive Repair include air conditioning, brakes, steering and suspension, and routine maintenance. “Cars are expensive, but you don’t have to purchase a new vehicle every few years when you work with us for complete routine maintenance,” says Dan. “We’ll make sure everything is working properly and help you avoid costly repairs or purchases in the future.” Dan says “being an independent repair shop

owner amid national competitors has not altered his day-to-day operation. Back when I worked in the corporate world, I was told by a vice president, ‘Don’t be concerned about what the competition does. Be concerned about what you do.” The driving force behind King Automotive Repair includes a clear focus on the consistency of service, excellence in workmanship, fair pricing, free onehour diagnostic testing, free shuttle service, a 12-month/12,000- mile warranty, and the honoring of most extended and nationwide warranties, as well as the policy to put customers’ needs first. With this commitment to service, King Automotive Repair has maintained a 98 percent repeat customer base. Customers can be confident that King Automotive Repair can help find the right solutions to keep your car on the road for years to come—even setbacks caused by a DIY repair that finishes with leftover parts and this question: “How could that possibly happen to my vehicle?” Dan says, “Dave Coffman will have the answer. He’s been a mechanic for 25 years and has a photographic memory.” King Automotive Repair, located at 10002 W. Santa Fe Drive in Sun City, is Open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For immediate assistance or to make an appointment, call 623-933-4990. Dan says, “I didn’t start out to be a gearhead, but I am a people person who has learned about cars and sales. Now I really enjoy this business.”

MR. CLEAN EYE CARE SERVICES

If it’s time for a deep cleaning—invite your kids to splurge on a housekeeper for your next big gift. This 10-20 minute routine focuses on getting rid of trash and putting everything in its place and leaves things looking neat and tidy. WHAT YOU NEED: • Garbage bag • Recycling bag • Laundry basket • Dampened microfiber cloth The goal of tidying up (verses cleaning) is simple, you’re focusing on those items at eye level—quite frankly, if your friends are judging you on the cleanliness of your floors, keep them out on your patio. The most important goal is to make your home look tidy, organized and clutter-free. • Set your timer for 10 minutes and get a laundry basket, dampened cloth, recycling bag and a garbage bag. Choose a starting point. • Begin by picking up all items you can see that are not in their place. If they belong in another room, place them in your basket until your reach the room the item belongs in. If you need to toss items in the garbage (or recycling) place those items in the bag. Anything that is out of place or belongs in another room can go in the laundry basket as well, and can be dealt with at a later point. • Use the damp microfiber cloth to do quick cleans (i.e. wipe away a fingerprint, touch up a dust ring you see, remove scuff marks on the wall etc.) This is not heavy-duty clean up time—you are just touching up the glaring messes. • Organize items by lining them up or straightening them out. If you have stacks of papers, straighten them neatly and make sure the edges are together. If you have a lampshade tilted to one side, take a moment to center it. • Take a moment to fold blankets, fluff pillows and upholstery. • Finish off by taking the garbage directly to the garbage bin and taking all the items in the laundry basket to a place in the house that won’t be visited and promise yourself you’ll deal with it later. While your house won’t pass the feared white glove test of the 1950s, real friends will find your home comfortable and won’t be distracted from the clutter that abounds. 1 cup frozen corn 8 large burrito-style tortillas Optional toppings: shredded cheese, chopped cilantro, sour cream, diced avocado, salsa, hot sauce, diced green onions, shredded lettuce

KITCHEN DIVA

SLOW-COOKED COMFORT I live in Texas, and I’ve had a long love affair with tortillas. My recipe for Slow-Cooked Burrito Filling is an easy way to prepare burritos for a weeknight meal or a weekend crowd. SLOW-COOKED BURRITO FILLING You can put this filling into a bowl instead of a tortilla and finish it with your favorite toppings. INGREDIENTS 1 to 1 1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts, chicken thighs, or a mix, cut into 2-inch pieces 1 1/2 tablespoons chili powder 1/2 tablespoon cumin 2 teaspoons salt 1 (14.5-ounce) can hot or medium diced tomatoes with jalapeno peppers, plus juice 1 cup chicken stock, divided, plus more if needed 1 cup brown rice 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed

DIRECTIONS 1. Combine the chicken pieces, chili powder, cumin, salt and diced tomatoes together in the bowl of a 2 1/2- to 3 1/2-quart slow cooker until all of the pieces are coated. Add 1/2 cup of chicken stock or more as needed to ensure the chicken is covered. Cover with the lid and cook on low for 3 to 4 hours. 2. Remove the lid and add the rice, black beans, frozen corn and the remaining chicken broth. Replace the lid and continue cooking on low for another 3 to 4 hours. Check the rice periodically in the last hour of cooking, stirring once or twice to make sure rice cooks evenly and adding more chicken broth if the mixture seems dry. Cooking is done when the rice is tender. (If the rice is done while there still is liquid left in the slow cooker, remove the lid and cook on high to let the liquid evaporate.) 3. Roll the chicken filling and your choice of optional ingredients into a warm tortilla and form a burrito, or put the filling into a bowl and add your choice of toppings. Serves 6 to 8.

AROUND ARIZONA By Nancy L. Brandt

THE HEYDAY OF STEAMBOATS ON THE COLORADO Looking at the diminished flow of the Colorado River near Yuma today it is hard to visualize steamboats plying its waters, carrying freight and passengers from the mouth of the river to Fort Yuma. However, in the mid1800s side- and sternwheel steamboats with names like Uncle Sam, Esmeralda, Mohave, Gila, General Jessup, Explorer and Cocopah were a familiar sight on the river. Although the Uncle Sam was the first to appear in 1852, the Explorer was probably the most unique. Owned by the government, the iron hulled Explorer went into service in 1857. Her mission: to determine whether the Colorado could be navigated as far upstream as the confluence of the Virgin River. Ill-fated from the beginning, the Explorer was eventually sold to a Captain Johnson who used her as a barge to haul wood on the Gila River. In 1864 Explore broke free from a tree where workers had tied her and sailed off toward the Colorado but a prevailing current carried her deep into a slough. Before she could be rescued the river changed course

leaving her landlocked and forgotten. In 1930 the Explore once again made news when a Yuma newspaper reported that her rusting hull had been discovered nine miles from the riverbed some 16 miles below San Luis by a group of surveyors. The coming of the railroad in 1877 and construction of Laguna Dam in 1907 wrote paid to the romantic era of steamboat traffic on the Colorado River.

BE HAPPY!

HOW DO YOU DEFINE HAPPINESS?

It’s important to recognize that there are enormous differences in what causes happiness and unhappiness among individuals. Our own triggers of happiness are as varied as our fingerprints. However, while the triggers of short-term happiness are different, what sustains long-term happiness is universal across all cultures. There are four main qualities that sustain happiness: 1. Optimism (believing that our behavior will eventually matter) 2. Social Connection (the breadth and depth of our relationships) 3. The Way We Perceive Stresses (as challenges instead of threats) 4. Meaning (the connection between our actions and our values) In order to sustain happiness, we need to redefine it for the world. We need to differentiate pleasure from happiness. According to The Happiness Advantage, we need to use the ancient

48

GRAND SEASON - SURPRISE AREA EDITION

NOVEMBER 2015

Greeks’ definition of happiness: “The joy you feel striving toward your potential.” Happiness in this definition cannot be stripped from meaning and from growth. This definition changes the way we pursue happiness and is linked to all four of the sustainers of happiness. Joy is something we can experience in the ups and downs of life, even when things are not pleasurable. We feel happiest when we feel we are growing in our relationships or our ability to change the world for the positive or when we see life as a challenge instead of a threat. HAPPINESS VERSUS PLEASURE We must not confuse having work, stress and challenge as the opposite of happiness. In fact, happiness requires all of those because those are necessary to achieve our potential. It’s time to move away from defining happiness as simply pleasure, and know, like the ancient Greeks, that it’s so much deeper: It’s the joy we feel when we’re striving toward our potential. So, go out into the world and continue this conversation about redefining happiness with your family, friends, co-workers, neighbors—anyone who will talk to you. Together, we can lead a movement to change how our world defines what being happy truly means. For more information, visit Goodthinkinc.com

GET PHYSICAL LET’S GET INTO PHYSICAL (THERAPY) Most of us assume we’ll still be living independently at age 80. That’s the good news, with 68% of us believing we’ll be able to do the same types of activities at age 65 and older. But, half of us think we’ll lose flexibility and strength as we age. A study of 1,000 participants by the American Physical Therapy Association shows that even we are conflicted about when we start to show signs of aging. More than half of us believe we will start to see signs in our 60s. No matter how old you are—60s, 70s, 80s— improvements can be made in your physical condition, often without surgery or medication. Many conditions can be made better with physical therapy: diabetes, arthritis, chronic back pain, knee problems, heart disease, osteoporosis and more. Physical therapy also improves strength, prevents frailty and diabetes with regular activity, improves balance and reduces risk of falls, strengthens bones and reduces the risk of fracture, improves or prevents heart disease, and helps avoid memory problems.

While through the years we have focused mainly on prosthetics, the office also has established a reputation in restorative dentistry such as crowns and bridges for our patients.

present on the first Thanksgiving’s feast table. Instead, it’s believed that lobster, rabbit, chicken, fish, squashes, beans, chestnuts, hickory nuts, onions, leeks, dried fruits, maple syrup, honey, radishes, cabbage, carrots, eggs, and goat cheese made up the first Thanksgiving feast.

TURKEY TALK While the following facts may seem obvious, you might take a moment to share these facts with your grandchildren and great-grandchildren about the holiday so much of our history was built on: • The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving. • The Pilgrims sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to reach North America. • They sailed on the ship known as the ‘Mayflower’. • They celebrated the first Thanksgiving Day at Plymouth, Massachusetts. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The Pilgrim leader, Governor William Bradford organized the first Thanksgiving feast in 1621. He invited the neighboring Wampanoag Indians to the feast. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • Mashed potatoes, pumpkin pies, popcorn, milk, corn on the cob and cranberries were not foods

THANKSGIVING FACTS THROUGHOUT HISTORY • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. • Abraham Lincoln issued a “Thanksgiving Proclamation” on October 3, 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920s. • Congress passed a law on December 26, 1941, ensuring that all Americans would celebrate a unified Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November every year.

While Americans tend to associate the holidays with togetherness, joyful occasions and feelings of warmth and happiness, the season can also worsen feelings of loneliness and isolation for some people—especially older adults. Loneliness is not only bad for seniors’ emotional health; it can affect their physical wellbeing, as well. “The holidays can present families with an opportunity to spot signs of loneliness in their older family members and take steps to do something about it,” says Dr. Kevin O’Neil, chief medical officer of Brookdale Senior Living. “Isolation and loneliness in seniors can lead to debilitating depression, high blood pressure, dementia and shorter life spans. Time and time again we see that when seniors overcome loneliness, make new friends and feel a part of a caring community, they’re happier and their physical health improves.” Research illustrates the link between loneliness and the advancement of dementia, deterioration

of physical health and shortened lifespans. Conversely, multiple studies show feeling connected and happy is good for your health and can lead to a longer lifespan. What’s more, happiness really can be contagious. “Social connections are vital for people of all ages,” O’Neil says. “Emotional ties are even more important for seniors, yet they are also more vulnerable to losing those bonds through the death of a spouse, grown children busy with their own lives or the relocation of a long-time friend who moves closer to be near their own family.” Dr. O’Neil recommends some tactics to help seniors combat loneliness: • GET MOVING. Physical exercise increases the body’s level of “feel good” hormones, and can contribute to improved sleep, as well as fewer aches and pains. Seniors should get 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise per day. • WATCH A FUNNY MOVIE OR TV SHOW TOGETHER. Laughter’s positive effects on the mind and body are well documented. Laughing together improves mood and can make people feel more connected. • MAKE NEW CONNECTIONS. Ask a neighbor to go for a walk with you. Join a club or social organization. • FEEL BETTER BY HELPING OTHERS. Volunteering has many positive effects on mental health. Visit www.brookdale.com for tips on combating loneliness.

SOCIAL HOUR

ARE YOU PREPARED FOR A 30 YEAR VACATION?

Now that vacation season has passed, it’s easier to remember the work you put into your amazing journey. There are many things to consider depending on the type of experience a person wants to have and what they need to bring along. Imagine preparing for a 30-year vacation. As life expectancy increases, that’s essentially what retirement could be for many Americans. Their financial strategy has to accommodate routine expenses like food and shelter, healthcare costs, lifestyle needs and perhaps even a legacy for loved ones or favorite philanthropy. Yet research shows that when it comes to retirement planning, many Americans are flying blind. According to Northwestern Mutual’s 2015 Planning & Progress Study, while not having sufficient savings to retire comfortably is a leading financial fear, more than a third of adults don’t even know how much income they need to retire. The lack of confidence in financial preparedness may explain why Americans are increasingly delaying retirement involuntarily. The good news is that it’s rarely too late to take control of your financial situation. Experts suggest considering the following “retirement vacation checklist” to help assess whether your financial foundation can support your desired lifestyle through your life span: DETERMINE YOUR DESTINATION Like an actual vacation, what you need to take depends on where you’re going and how long you’re planning to stay. So, if your goal is to retire as early as possible and lead a life of leisure without working for supplemental income, you’ll likely need more resources than if you choose to remain in the workforce as long as possible. DISCUSS GOALS WITH YOUR COMPANION If you’re retiring with a spouse or partner, it’s essential to ensure your retirement expectations and priorities are aligned. However, maintaining open and ongoing communication about financial matters may be harder than it sounds. In fact, research shows that Americans prefer discussing death and intimacy over money. CONSULT AN EXPERT While the Internet has empowered us to become a nation of DIYers, there are still some areas where professional guidance is valuable, a professional advisor can objectively look at your finances and goals, and devise a strategy to meet immediate and future needs. AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

The Grand Season Business Profile

Vistancia Orthodontics

Dr. Devin Croft and his team will not only help you look better, but also has the tools to help you feel better. Finding a qualified orthodontist seems like it’s the perfect item on the top of a “to-do” list in a family who has pre-teens and is trying to get their smile fixed prior to all of the important activities during their teen years. What may surprise you is that children and adults of all ages can benefit from the care of a qualified orthodontist. Vistancia Orthodontics cares for patients of all ages, and all stages. While improving patient’s smiles through the most advanced technologies is a priority to Dr. Croft, it was a personal experience with sleep apnea that motivated his professional growth and passion to provide state of the art care for those struggling with sleep related breathing problems. CUTTING EDGE KNOWLEDGE & CARE Dr. Devin Croft is a native of Glendale, Arizona. He attended the University of Arizona for undergraduate studies. He then attended dental school at the University of Minnesota and graduated in 2004 as a Doctor of Dental Surgery. After graduating from dental school, Dr. Croft practiced as a general dentist in Eden Prairie, Minnesota for two years for a large group practice. Realizing that he wanted to further his education, he applied and was selected to attend the prestigious Temple University Orthodontic Residency Program in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for 27 months where he received a Certificate in Orthodontics and a Masters of Science in Oral Biology. During his residency, his Master’s thesis research focused on the application of 3D imaging on orthodontic treatment effects. When he’s not working with his patients, Dr. Croft enjoys spending time with his family and following the Phoenix Suns, Coyotes and cheering for the Arizona Wildcat’s basketball team. THE PERSONAL TOUCH Dr. Croft and his team value the relationships they developed with their clients and consider patient referrals the greatest compliment their practice can receive. What sets Dr. Croft and his team apart is their ability to successfully work with patients (children and adults) who suffer from sleep related issues, and may be intolerant to treatment with a CPAP mask. Dr. Croft says he loves knowing his patients are sleeping better, snoring less, and as a result are experiencing more energy and happiness in their daily

NOVEMBER 2015

Dr. Devin Croft of Vistancia Orthodontics lives due to successfully treating sleep disorders with state of the art treatment plan. One of the benefits Vistancia Orthodontic’s patients receive is help navigating the complex insurance maze in seeking proper coverage for treatment plan prior to it starting. Dr Croft says, “Insurance can be one of the most annoying aspect of care for patients because traditional orthodontic care is often a component covered by dental of insurance, and the treatment of obstructive sleep disorders is often covered by medical insurance.” That’s why he has a team of experts dedicated to helping his patients have a clear plan of care, and know exactly what costs will be incurred before treatment begins. IS IT TIME TO SEEK TREATMENT? You may wonder if it’s time for you to see orthodontic or sleep disorder treatment, Dr. Croft says, “if you have crooked teeth, spacing, overbites, crossbites, or a desire to make your teeth straighter and improve your smile it’s time to consider orthodontic care. And if you are experiencing excessive daytime tiredness, low energy, poor concentration, loud snoring, poor sleep and are aware that you’re not breathing right at night, these would be reasons to consider treatment for sleep apnea.” Dr. Croft’s orthodontic practice is located in Peoria, and can usually schedule new patient appointments within a few days of receiving your call. To learn more about Dr. Devin Croft, and his team at Vistancia Orthodontics give them a call at (623) 566-0800 or visit them at www.vistanciaortho.com WWW.THEGRANDSEASON.COM

HEPATITIS C More than a million Americans are unaware they are infected with a potentially life-threatening virus WHAT IS HEPATITIS C (HCV)? HCV, the most prevalent chronic blood-borne infection in the United States, affects more than 3 million Americans and causes approximately 15,000 deaths each year. HCV is the number one cause of liver failure and liver-related death and a major cause of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. HCV is also associated with a variety of other conditions, including diabetes, thyroid disease and kidney disease. HCV is a “silent disease.” However, when symptoms occur, they can include fatigue, joint pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, loss of appetite and abdominal pain. The good news, however, is HCV can be cured. WHO DOES HCV AFFECT? Baby Boomers, or people born between 1945 and 1965, are disproportionately affected by HCV,

accounting for three out of four people with the virus. In addition, before the availability of widespread screening of the blood supply in 1992, the virus was often spread through blood transfusions and organ transplants. WHO SHOULD GET TESTED? The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the following people get tested for HCV: • Anyone born from 1945 through 1965 • Anyone who received donated blood or organs before 1992 • Health and safety workers who have been exposed to blood on the job through a needle stick or injury with a sharp object • Anyone born to a mother with hepatitis • Anyone with certain medical conditions, such as chronic liver disease and HIV or AIDS • Anyone who has injected drugs • Anyone with abnormal liver tests or liver disease WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU HAVE THE CHRONIC HEPATITIS C VIRUS? If both tests indicate a person is infected with HCV, it is important to consult a Hepatitis C specialist to discuss the opportunity for treatment and to potentially be cured. To learn more about HCV, visit HepCHope.com.
