LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

The Cactus League is in full swing, and so is the traffic, tourists and limited tee-times. While you may love the slower pace of the winter months, there’s no doubt the energy that comes from Spring Training is infectious. In addition, the citrus trees in your back yard are bursting with incredible color, smells and flavor. I love everything March represents—including the sunshine, tourists and opportunity to watch the dreams of young men become reality. As you endure the hustle and bustle of the next 6 weeks, will you do me a favor? Tell your friends and family about the great local restaurants and businesses featured in this month’s issue so they can support our local economy while visiting the West Valley. Now go out and cheer for your home team. But, don’t forget your hat, sunscreen and water!

ALBRECHT AND SON MARCH 2016

THE GRAND SEASON - SURPRISE AREA EDITION

Laurel and Hardy ruled movie theaters as one of the top comedy teams from 1921-1951. If you don’t know who they are, you’ll be able to discover them in the upcoming British film “Stan & Ollie,” which will star Englishman Steve Coogan. Also in the works is an upcoming English TV movie about the supposedly infamous time that Elizabeth Taylor (Stockard Channing), Marlon Brando (Brian Cox) and Michael Jackson (Joseph Finnes) rented a car after 9/11 to drive to Los Angeles because the airports were closed. The trio got as far as Ohio and flew the rest of the way. Since all three stars are gone, who knows what happened during that car trip? Imagine seeing Liz, Marlon and Jacko at a greasy spoon drinking “joe!”

A BETTER YOU

STAYING HEALTHY AS YOU AGE

Tips for staying connected with the outside world.

One of the greatest challenges of aging is how your support network changes. Staying connected isn’t easy as you grow older—even for those with an active social life. Career changes, retirement, illness, death and moves can distance or remove close friends and family members.

children. Even if you are not close by, call or email frequently to keep your relationships fresh. Make an effort to make new friends. As you lose people in your circle, it is vital to make new connections so your circle doesn’t dwindle. Make it a point to befriend people who are younger than you. Younger friends can reenergize you and help you see life from a fresh perspective. Spend time with at least one person every day. Whatever your living or work situation, you shouldn’t be alone day after day. Phone or email contact is not a replacement for spending time with other people. Regular face-to-face contact can help you ward off depression and stay positive.

It’s important to find ways to connect to people other than your spouse or partner. Having an array of people you can turn to for company and encouragement is a buffer against loneliness, depression, disability, hardship and loss. The good news is there are many opportunities to connect with new people. Here are some tips to keep connected:

Volunteer. Giving back to the community is a great way to cultivate social bonds and meet other people. Volunteering is a natural way to connect with others interested in similar activities or share similar values.

Meet regularly with friends and family. Spend time with people you enjoy and who make you feel upbeat. It may be a neighbor who you like to exercise with, a lunch date with an old friend or shopping with your

Find support groups in times of change. If you or a loved one is coping with a serious illness or recent loss, it can be helpful to participate in a support group with others experiencing the same challenges.

AUTO TALK

STAYING SAFE BEHIND THE WHEEL To drive or not to drive— that is the question.

Whether you’re 16 or 80, driving means independence. You can go where you want to go when you want to go. Unfortunately, as we age, driving can become more difficult. Roads are busier, cars are loaded with more features and the days of Sunday drives are all but gone. The decision whether or not to drive is one— hopefully—you can process and prepare for on your own terms. Adjusting to life without a car may be challenging at first. If you’ve been driving your whole life it can feel like quite a shock. It’s normal to be frustrated, angry or irritable. You might even feel ashamed or worry that you are losing your independence. It takes courage to stop driving and put the safety of yourself and others first. You may find, however, there are many benefits to living without a car that you may not have even considered. Some of those benefits may include the following:

Saving money on the cost of car ownership, including car insurance, maintenance, registration and gasoline. These savings can pay for alternative transportation if necessary. Many seniors who only used their car for short trips find that taxis or shuttle services end up costing far less. Improving your health. Giving up the car keys often means walking or cycling more, which can have a hugely beneficial effect on your health. Regular exercise from walking and cycling can help increase energy, improve sleep and boost confidence. Expanding your social circle. While you may have difficulty accepting ride offers from others, this can be a good time to reach out and connect to new people. Appreciating the change of pace. For many, stopping driving means slowing down. While that may not sound appealing to everyone, many older adults find they enjoy life far more living at a less stressful pace. If you decide it’s time to put the keys away, there are plenty of ways to get to the places you enjoy. Consider public transportation, ride sharing, shuttles/senior transit, taxis, private drivers, walking or cycling!

the washed orange in the freezer. Once the orange is frozen, get your grater, and shred the whole orange (no need to peel it) and sprinkle it on top of your foods. Sprinkle it on your salad, ice cream, soup, cereals, smoothies, noodles, spaghetti sauce, rice, sushi, fish dishes….the list is endless. All of the foods will have a wonderful taste.

3. Make an herbal tea. Traditionally, orange peels are used internally in teas to help with stomach cramps and as an appetite stimulant. 4. Make orange zest. Freeze it with water in ice cube trays. Use it for flavorful drinks on a hot day or to add some zing to your daily water routine.

HERE’S A TIP by JoAnn Derson

TIP 1 Protect your dog’s paws with petroleum jelly. Clean off your dog’s feet and rub a small amount of petroleum jelly into the pads. This is especially important in winter, as outside conditions can really do a number on their paws. TIP 2 Start giving gifts that are experiences rather than clutter, such as a beauty salon trip, a nice bottle of wine, a car wash/ oil change combo or a dinner out with friends and family. TIP 3 Cords you don’t use regularly can be hung up on the inside of your desk or computer cabinet. TIP 4 Use Borax to unclog a toilet. Try adding a ½ cup of Borax and letting it sit 10-20 minutes, followed by a few cups of boiling water.

PAW PRINTS

TAKING A TRIP AND FIDO CAN’T JOIN YOU? No worries, a pet sitter can spoil your pets while you spoil yourself.

Pet sitting is a new career choice. If you’re needing a pet sitter, ask your vet or look for “help wanted” signs at the community center or online.

The possibilities are endless but here are a couple ideas on additional responsibilities your pet sitter might be able to help with while you are travelling. House sitting A pile of newspapers in the driveway is advertising to burglars you’re not home. If you’re going away for a vacation or long weekend, why not have your pet sitter stay at the home and bring in the newspaper whenever he or she takes your pet out for some regular exercise?

When you hire a pet sitter, it’s a given they will love on, walk, feed, play and clean up after your beloved pet. But that doesn’t have to be all they do.

Cleaning up Ask if your pet sitter would be willing to wash the food and water bowls, brush your pet, check the food supplies and pick up the poop.

Often, pet sitters are willing to take on a few extra chores that could be really helpful. Talk to your sitter about the type of duties he or she would be willing to take on besides taking care of your four-legged friend. Have an honest talk with your sitter about what he or she is—and isn’t —interested in doing, to see if you can maxmize your return on your pet care investment.

Mail colleciton If you don’t want to put an official hold on your mail, ask your sitter to collect the mail and leave it in a neat stack inside your home. Knowing your pet and home are being cared for will allow you the freedom to enjoy your vacation—and not worry about your home while you’re gone.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver

It was columnist and editor Doug Larson who made the following sage observation: “Few things are more satisfying than seeing your children have teenagers of their own.” If you’re a fan of football, you’ve probably seen the leaping lion logo on the helmets of Detroit Lions players. You might not realize, though, that the lion has a name— Bubbles. Those who study such things say that your brain takes about 0.0004 seconds to retrieve a memory. The person who has been nominated for more Academy Awards than any other living person is American composer John Williams—who created scores for such films as the “Star Wars” series, “Jaws,” “Schindler’s List,” “Jurassic Park,” the “Indiana Jones” series, “Fiddler on the Roof” and the first three “Harry Potter” movies—has (so far) been nominated for a whopping 50 Oscars, and he has taken home five of the statuettes.

DOLLARS AND SENSE by Stacy Kaiser

ARE YOU GUILTY OF THESE 4 UNHEALTHY SPENDING HABITS?

If so, you’re not alone—and we have the advice you need.

Financial stress can send us on an emotional rollercoaster that makes even the most even-keeled and happy of us feel distressed. As adults we are expected to somehow know how to handle money, yet few of us have been properly taught how to manage it correctly. How you feel about money comes largely from your childhood experiences— baggage you have accumulated, and skills and habits (both good and bad) that you’ve picked up along the way. While many financial problems are outside our control, you’ll feel more in control if you can identify your self-defeating spending habits and find a way to stop them. Do any of these habits sound familiar? 1. Burying your head in the sand Do you avoid thinking about money? Do you let bills pile up, engage in reckless shopping when you know

you don’t have the funds or avoid looking at bank statements because you’re in denial? 2. Filling the hole Some people spend compulsively as a way to fill a void. That void could be caused by anything from a bad day to a bad marriage. If you indulge in this kind of spending, you’ll quickly learn that the hole can never be filled with anything you can buy. 3. Penny-pinching Being thrifty is usually a virtue, but it can become a pathology when you have such a fear of losing money that you hold onto every penny, putting unnecessary stress on your own life and those around you. Sometimes it makes sense to buy new clothes or new furniture. You only live once; it’s okay to treat yourself to a few beautiful new things. 4. Digging the hole deeper Let’s say you know your expenses have already exceeded your income for the month. If you are the kind of person who thinks in extremes, you might say, “Well hey, in that case, why not just go all out and blow the rest on a cruise to the Bahamas!” Turns out, it’s not such a good idea.

KEEPING FIT

EXERCISE AND FITNESS AS YOU AGE Tips for building a balanced exercise plan.

Mixing different types of exercise helps keep your workouts interesting and improve your health. Here’s an overview of the four building blocks of fitness. Block #1: Cardio endurance exercise is using large muscle groups in rhythmic motions to get your heart pumping. You may even feel a little short of breath. Exercises include walking, swimming, hiking, cycling, rowing or dancing. Why it’s good for you: It helps reduce fatigue and shortness of breath and promotes independence by improving endurance for daily activities such as walking, house cleaning and errands. Building Block #2: Strength and power training builds up muscle with repetitive motion using weight or external resistance from body weight, machines, free weights or elastic bands.

Why it’s good for you: It helps prevent loss of bone mass, builds muscle and improves balance—both important in staying active and avoiding falls. Building strength and power will help you stay independent and make day-to-day activities easier. Building Block #3: Flexibility exercises are designed to enhance your body’s joints and their ability to move freely through a full range of motion. This can be done through stationary stretches and stretches that involve movement to keep your muscles and joints supple so they are less prone to injury. Yoga is an excellent means of improving flexibility. Why it’s good for you: It helps your body stay limber and increases your range of movement for ordinary physical activities such as looking behind while driving or playing with your grandchildren. Building Block #4: Balance exercises are intended to maintain standing strength and overall stability, whether you’re stationary or moving around. Tai Chi and posture exercises are excellent for developing improved confidence with balance. Why it’s good for you: It improves your posture, quality of walking and also reduces your risk of falling and being injured.

The Grand Season Business Profile

Is It Time to Update Your Entertainment System? A2Z Electronic Wizards can enhance your life with electronics expertise. A2Z Electronic Wizards was founded by Keith Brown in the 1990’s in St Louis, Ill. As a member of the U.S. Marine Corps 30 years ago, he was provided an opportunity to become an expert in the ever-evolving industry of electronics and entertainment. This background gave Keith the perfect experience to own and run an audio and video electronics business. In 2003, the Browns moved to Surprise and brought their business with them. As a family-owned business, they are a licensed audio and video electronics dealer providing services for residential and commercial needs. A2Z Electronic Wizards is one of the only companies in the Valley capable of providing such a wide variety of services, including home theater installations and home/business surveillance systems. In addition they’re able to provide television and satellite services for prices much lower than big box stores. In the words of Keith, “We are a one-stop shop.” A2Z Electronic Wizards can perform simple residential installations, such as Blue-Ray disc players, TVs, sound systems and computers, but can also handle far more complex services for businesses. In fact, they’re responsible for the audio/video and satellite services for one of Arizona’s largest banks. What makes A2Z Electronic Wizards different from their competitors is they truly believe there’s no job too small or too big—and they have the plenty of client testimonies to demonstrate their commitment to each person (and business) who trusts them with their electronic needs.

32

THE GRAND SEASON - SURPRISE AREA EDITION MARCH 2016

Keith says, “We have experience with most makes and models of TVs, sound systems, satellites, computers, security and camera systems, remote controls, intercoms and phone systems.” So whether you have a system that needs attention or are looking for help designing your dream system, A2Z Electronic Wizards is eager to help. Our core value is to treat everyone we serve with the respect they deserve—unlike other providers who may treat you like a number.” Whether it’s a pair of speakers on the patio, a soundbar for the TV or a complete surround sound home theater, A2Z Electronic Wizards can supply the equipment, wiring and installation to meet your needs. If you’re interested in meeting Keith and his team, call him to schedule an in-home consultation that allows them to help you determine which products are the right size, quality and price-point for your needs. After the initial consultation, he’ll ask you to visit some of the big box stores to find the electronics you like. Then you simply call him with model numbers and he’ll shop for the best price, deliver and setup your new equipment and dispose of your old gear (if needed). Keith’s team will also set you up with a universal remote to control all your new toys with the touch of a button. See our ad on page 3. COPING WITH CRANKY PEOPLE

LIVE HAPPY by Dani DiPirro

How to engage positively to defuse a potentially explosive situation.

Regardless of where you spend your time, you’re bound to find yourself faced with a cranky person. Here are some ways you can keep them from ruining your mood. 1. Use a kind (or neutral) tone. It’s tempting to respond the way you’ve been spoken to, but that will only make an unpleasant interaction worse. Keep in mind that you’re encountering someone at his or her worst (perhaps in the middle of a bad day, during a period of low blood sugar, etc.) and pause before you respond. Remind yourself to use a kind or neutral tone. 2. Try reversing your reaction. If you want to yell, speak softly. Responding the opposite way from how you want to react can lead to a much more positive interaction—and it’s another great way to help you keep your cool.

3. Don’t take it (too) personally. If someone snaps at you, it can feel as if you’re somehow the cause of this change in mood. Crankiness is often a result of something going on internally or something unrelated to the current interaction. Consider how you feel when you’re cranky. Usually it has little to do with the other person, right? 4. Break it up with a time out. The last thing a cranky person wants to hear is: “Are you okay? Why are you in a bad mood?” Questions like these are rarely answered honestly and often irritate those feeling cranky. Instead of peppering someone with questions, step back and do something different. 5. Create a crankiness code word. To communicate quickly about crankiness (without having to ask questions), create a simple one-word signal to say, “Hey, you’re being a bit cranky now so I’m going to give you your space.” Although you might like to, you’ll never be able to completely avoid the crankiness of others, but with these tips you’ll be able to better cope when the moods of others go from good to grouchy.

GARLIC AND LEMON SARDINES WITH PARMESAN PASTA

If you don’t care for sardines, replace them with 2 (5-6 ounces) cans of chunk tuna packed in oil.

Ingredients • 8 oz. linguine or fettuccine • 4 tbsps. extra-virgin olive oil, divided • 4 cloves garlic, minced • 1/2 small yellow onion, peeled and diced • 2 tbsps. tomato paste • 1/2 tsp. ground sage • 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes • 2 slices bread, white or whole-wheat, for breadcrumbs; or 1 cup packaged breadcrumbs • 1/4 cup lemon juice • 1 tsp. freshly ground pepper • 1 tsp. salt • 2 (3- to 4-oz.) cans boneless, skinless sardines, drained and flaked • 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley • 1 cup finely shredded Parmesan cheese Directions 1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add enough salt so that the water tastes salty. Add pasta and

cook according to package directions. Drain, reserving 1/2 cup of the water to add to the sauce. 2. Meanwhile, heat 2 tbsps. oil in a small nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and onion, cook, stirring, until fragrant and sizzling but not brown, about 20 seconds. Add the tomato paste, sage and 1/8 tsp. of the cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes, and cook for 1-2 minutes. Transfer the garlic mixture to a large bowl. 3. To make fresh breadcrumbs: Trim crusts from the bread slices. Tear bread into pieces and process in a food processor until coarse crumbs form. 4. Wipe out the pan. Heat the remaining 2 tbsps. of the oil in the pan over medium heat. Add breadcrumbs and 1/8 tsp. of the cayenne or red pepper flakes and cook, stirring, until crispy and golden brown, 5 to 6 minutes. Transfer to a plate. 5. Whisk the lemon juice, the pepper and salt into the garlic oil. Add the pasta to the bowl along with the sardines, 1/4 cup of the parsley, 3/4 cup of the Parmesan and the reserved pasta water, about 1/4 cup at a time, to bring the sauce together. Gently stir to combine. Serve sprinkled with the breadcrumbs, and the remaining parsley and Parmesan. Sunday Breakfast Buffet 8:30am to 12:30pm • Only $14 per person Includes coffee and juice.

VETERANS POST by Freddy Groves

Rates are still low—

now is a good time to consider a new mortgage. . There are many options out there and it may seem overwhelming. Call me today and I’ll be happy to answer your

Taking any type of monetary payment from the Department of Veterans Affairs means that at any time, it can ask for the money back. A Washington veteran recently went through the process of the VA trying to collect money it said he owed. Fortunately for him, he had kept every single piece of paper and receipt, and a copy of every letter he’d written to the VA. That incheshigh stack of copies was helpful to the attorney he had to hire.

Mollie Abner, Mortgage Banker T: 602-589-3012 C: 623-363-1701 mollie.m.abner@chase.com http://homeloan.chase.com/mollie.m.abner NMLS ID: 694885

One document was a letter saying he was in prison but needed the money to take care of his family. The VA kept the payments coming. Once he got out, the VA suddenly wanted all its money back—either in one big bite or they’d cut off all his benefits. Multiple letters were ignored until suddenly, the veteran received a waiver of the debt. Direct overpayment isn’t the only way a veteran can end up with cash that needs to be returned. If you get monetary benefits from the VA, keep track of it. If it asks for any money back, go online to ww.va.gov/debtman, or call 800-827-0648. FOR ADVERTISING INFORMATION CALL (623) 594-1630

Spotlight (R) This based-on-a-truestory film gives a riveting and relevant look into the world of investigative journalism, without the pomp and bombast of sanctifying the investigators. Robby Robinson (Michael Keaton) leads a team including Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams as they take on the live-wire topic of child abuse in the Catholic Church, and the systems that keep it covered up. Secret in Their Eyes (R) A group of counterterrorist investigators are shaken to the core when the daughter of one of their own is brutally murdered. Jess (Julia Roberts) carries the grief with her after her daughter’s killer is let go. Her friend Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) continued working on the case all that time, and brings a new lead to Jess and district attorney Claire (Nicole Kidman), setting off a violent vendetta. The Grand Season Business Profile

Putting the “Custom” in Customer Service!

Southwest Golf Cars has the perfect golf car for your specific needs. Are you looking for a new golf car for personal, recreational or business use? Regardless of your golf car needs, Southwest Golf Cars can provide you with the knowledge, service, parts and care to help you care for your car— from airing up tires to a complete rebuild— or help you purchase and design a new car for your changing needs. The McIntosh family has owned and operated Southwest Golf Cars in the West Valley since 1975. Southwest Golf Cars prides itself on customer service. “We treat people the way we would like to be treated,” says Co-Owner and General Manager Nancy McIntosh. “We listen to our customers to ensure we understand their needs.” Southwest Golf Cars’ excellent customer service, quality products and outstanding service back up their longstanding stellar reputation as one of the best golf car dealers in Arizona. “We rely on repeat customers and referrals for a large part of our business,” says McIntosh. “And we do everything we can to make a customer’s experience a positive one. Southwest Golf Cars is Arizona’s No. 1 leading dealer of neighborhood vehicles, golf cars, transportation vehicles and utility vehicles.” As the West Valley’s only authorized Star EV and Club Car dealer, Southwest Golf Cars can sell you new cars to fit your needs and will take trade-ins of nearly any brand. If you aren’t ready for a brand new car, they have a large, ever-changing supply of pre-owned and rebuilt vehicles to suit your budget. According to McIntosh, all pre-owned cars go through the service department to assure a

prospective buyer that the car is in tip-top running condition. “Southwest Golf Cars sells gas- and electric-powered vehicles for personal use on the street or recreational use on the golf course, off-road vehicles for summer cabins or the sand dunes, and our commercial vehicles offer either a cargo box or flatbed option for work that a handles a load of up to 1,200 pounds,” says McIntosh. “You can have a sporty little two-seater to run around the neighborhood and to play golf that, with a flick of a latch, will turn into a four-seater.” They also have the ability to adapt golf cars to their owners’ changing health needs. Southwest Golf Cars carries a fully stocked parts department with access to OEM and after-market parts. “Like regular cars, golf car parts are not interchangeable between brands,” McIntosh explains. “If we don’t have what you need in stock, we are happy to order it.” Southwest Golf Cars has factory-trained technicians to work on your vehicle, and if you can’t get your car to one of their locations, they even offer convenient pick-up and delivery service. Whether you’re looking for parts, service or a new car, with three locations, pick-up and delivery service, and a knowledgeable, efficient and friendly staff, Southwest Golf Cars is the ultimate final destination for all your golf car needs. QUICK TIPS TO FIX YOUR GAME

Your hopes of playing as a professional may have faded but don’t stop learning!

You Can Carry 14 Clubs—But Which 14? Proper set makeup is largely a distance-gapping question, so spend time at the range determining how far you hit each club. You may have a 15- or 20-yard hole that a hybrid, driving iron or fairway wood can fill. “More critical,” says custom clubmaker Mark Timms, “is dialing in your scoring clubs because they’ll help you get the ball close to the hole.” Don’t be afraid to replace a long club (adios, 3-iron!) with a 58- or 60-degree wedge, even with multiple wedges in your bag. You Catch Your Irons Thin “This results either from swinging on a plane that’s too flat, or from lifting up through impact,” says Top 100 Teacher Brady Riggs. “Either way, you need to deliver the club to the ball on a steeper descending path. Move your feet closer together at address and make sure your left shoulder is pointing down toward the ball in your down-swing. As you swing down, rather than using your arms and shoulders to power the club, let the club’s weight fall down into the ground. The club should feel

heavy through impact and make a nice ‘thump’ as it passes through the ball.” You’re a Trigger-Shy Head Case Over the Ball Rediscover the kid in you. “When you were young you didn’t think about how to shoot a foul shot or throw a baseball—you looked at the target and pulled the trigger,” says Top 100 Teacher Keith Lyford. “Try my ‘Two-Second Rule,’ which requires you to swing within two seconds of your last look at the target. This prevents you from staring at the ball for too long.” Your Back Hurts Squat down and hug your knees to your chest, or simply bend over and touch your toes, says PGA Tour physical therapist Jeff Hendra. Both exercises loosen your lowerback muscles and can help relieve pain mid-round. If you’re a walker, make sure your bag straps are adjusted for even weight distribution. You Have the Shanks Shanks happen because your hands moved closer than normal to the ball at impact, says Top 100 Teacher Chris Como. “To fix them, imagine that you’re going to stick the butt of the club into your left thigh as you swing through impact,” he says. “This simple move ensures that your hands square the clubface and move slightly away from the ball, not at it.”

FAMILY TIME

LOOKING TO BE A BETTER GRANDPARENT? The world has changed, and time with your grandkids is nothing like the time your spent with yours.

You can create a deep, loving relationship with your grandchildren by sharing the things you love with them, and by being available to learn about the ideas and activities that excite them. Take it easy together. Make an effort to enjoy leisure time with your grandchildren. As a grandparent, you get to interact with your grandchildren without the same daily pressures of a parent. Allow yourself to slow down and become really absorbed in an activity. Moving at a slower pace than usual can give children a sense that time can be ‘stretched’—that you don’t need to hurry through activities. And, as with adults, it gives them the psychic space to feel, reflect and express emotions without feeling rushed. Go outside. Children love the outdoors and trips to the park or the beach can be a great jumping-off point for some wonderful adventures and happy memories. Nature

let us make your dream kitchen a beautiful reality!

walks and day hikes can provide lots of interesting things to talk about, and water activities can be especially fun. Throwing stones into the water or watching the current play with sticks are simple activities that can be fascinating to children. Share your interests. Engaging in hobbies and activities that you or your grandchild loves can be a great way to spend time together and learn about each other. Sometimes activities that you might not expect your grandchildren to be interested in, like knitting or gardening, might turn out to provide an important point of connection. Similarly, if you take an interest in their passions, like trading cards or the Harry Potter books, they get to share their knowledge and it may open them up more. Making the most of your time together. On occasion, spend time with individual grandchildren. It will give you an opportunity to bond, without competition, with one grandchild at a time. Concerts and plays, movies, science centers and museums, parks or walks in the neighborhood provide opportunities to be together and to exchange ideas and opinions. Tell stories about games or trips you shared when the grandchild’s parents were young. This is a great way to weave a ‘tapestry’ of shared experiences for the whole family.

If you’re a senior over age 60—or know someone who is—and you don’t get enough to eat, it’s important to understand that there are options to help you get the nutrition you need. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can provide an average $126 each month to go toward food. For more information visit www.fns.usda.gov/ snap.

If you need help, or want to help a friend in need, contact the Council on Aging (www.ncoa.org) branch in your state for a full list of programs an individual can apply for. If you have been turned down for food benefits in the past, apply again, especially if your situation has changed in any way. Many communities have a Meals on Wheels program that can be a wonderful resource. If they don’t currently have an opening, ask to be put on the waiting list.

In some states, as part of SNAP, you also might be eligible for The Senior Farmers Markets Nutrition Program (SFMNP), which will provide a coupon booklet that can be used at farmers markets to buy fresh fruit and vegetables. Information is available on the USDA.gov website. Ask about a Senior Grocery Program in your state or the local food bank. More and more senior

centers are providing food programs. The center also might host a monthly luncheon, or perhaps a weekly get-together lunch. You’ll make contacts at any of these events that can steer you to other local food programs.

Many churches operate community food bank ministries, especially since the economic conditions in our country have been unstable for families of all ages. Contact them and don’t be ashamed to share your needs. Remember: Asking for help doesn’t make you weak— it’s actually is a healthy sign of strength!

MR. CLEAN

MAKE YOUR HOME HEALTHIER

There are things you need to throw out to keep yourself healthy.

Ratty, Stretched Out Bras Ladies, your “girls” need to be cradled in a supportive bra, which takes the weight off your shoulders and can reduce or prevent neck and back pain. A wellfitting bra also improves your posture. Margarine Not only do some margarines contain cholesterol-raising trans fat, but a moderate amount of real butter may be better for your health. A 2013 National Institutes of Health analysis found fewer deaths among patients who used butter instead of polyunsaturated margarine and oils such as safflower, corn and soybean. Old Nonstick Pans In 2006, the government gave nonstick pan makers until 2015 to eliminate a harmful chemical used in

making the nonstick lining of the pan. Canned Soup It’s time to kick the can. A 2011 Harvard study found that consuming canned soup daily for five days caused a 1,000 percent increase in the urine level of the chemical BPA, thanks to the can’s lining. BPA has been linked to reproductive problems in lab animals, and diabetes and obesity in humans. Your Toothbrush Just like the kitchen sponge that collects germs in its damp, dark crevices, your toothbrush can do the same. Replace it every three months or so and store it upright in an open container so that it can air-dry Expired, Improperly Stored Vitamins Check the expiration date on your vitamins. Although expired pills won’t make you sick, they can lose potency and prevent you from getting their full benefit. That’s especially the case if you’ve left them exposed to heat, light and air. Vitamins should be stored in a cool, dry place. Leftovers How old is that container of leftover whatever-it-is in your fridge? If it’s older than four days, pitch it.

To me, baseball is as honorable as any other business. It is the most honest pastime in the world. It has to be, or it could not last a season out. It will be greater yet. This year, 1919, is the greatest season of them all. —Charles Comiskey

OUNCE OF PREVENTION

IT’S COLD SEASON

Tips for avoiding stress when caring for a spouse who’s under the weather.

To help you become a better caregiver for a spouse during cough, cold and flu season, therapist and relationship expert Rachel Sussman recommends the following tips: Bring on the food for the soul. No cold or flu remedy is complete without a warm bowl of chicken soup. Whether homemade or store-bought, you partner will appreciate the gesture. If your partner has a larger appetite, prepare their favorite foods and serve them in bed. Stock the medicine cabinet. Preparation is key to being a good caregiver. Keep the medicine cabinet stocked with product to combat tough cold and sinus symptoms, like Advil Sinus Congestion and Pain. Provide entertainment. Sickness can take its toll not only on physical health, but also emotional well-being when one is spending the day resting. Help your partner get through a long, dull day by having entertaining books, movies and magazines at the ready. For the music lover, create a personalized playlist. Keep them warm. A warm, soft blanket and comfy clothes can make a big difference when feeling under the weather. Ask your spouse what their favorite convalescence clothes are, whether comfy pajamas, cozy sweatpants or fuzzy slippers and be sure they have them on hand throughout. Help with chores. When one is sick, chores and errands tend to fall to the wayside. Offer to help your partner with the small tasks like laundry, paying bills or urgent phone calls. Has your partner been to the doctor? Almost eight in 10 married individuals report their spouse doesn’t seek professional help as soon as possible to get better. Set up an appointment to ensure your partner is on the road to recovery as fast as possible. Show patience and understanding Above all, remain patient, be a good listener and show you can handle the extra stress. Listening to your partner attentively offers them a chance to unburden and vent, leading to a greater sense of calm and understanding. Couples who engage in this behavior are presented with an opportunity to achieve greater intimacy and connection.

ANTIQUE ANSWERS

IMPLANT DENTURES

Q: I have read your column for a number of years. Is there a trend you have spotted that surprised you? A: I visit antique malls and shops on a regular basis, and one thing I’ve noticed is the popularity of older typewriters. Royal and Underwood typewriters from the 1930s and ‘40s are selling at a premium. Almost as quickly as they are priced and placed for sale, they are snapped up by enthusiasts. I spoke to a Phoenix dealer who has sold three dozen typewriters during the past year, an incredible number but one that reflects how much in demand they seem to be. Q: Several weeks ago, I purchased some early bottles that originally contained Lemp Beer. I have never heard of Lemp Beer, but assume they must be worth more than the 25 cents each I paid for them. A: Adam Lemp began brewing beer in St. Louis in either 1838 or 1840 (the date varies according to the source). Operations continued until 1918 when the brewery closed quietly. Lemp Beer collectibles are extremely popular throughout the Midwest. WWW.THEGRANDSEASON.COM
