S EXPERIENCE OVER 30 YEAR
We Sell TV’s Cheaper Than Best B**
Happy 2016! At the beginning of each year, I like to consider ways to improve my life— physically, intellectually, emotionally, socially and spiritually. My emotional goals are always challenged by the obstacles I face during the year. Recently, I was reminded by my 98-yearold grandfather of the importance of telling those I care about how much I appreciate them. There’s no doubt that he has impacted the world but as we talked I realized that I had never specifically told him how much he had changed my life. This conversation reminded me how each of us desires to change the world around us. But we rarely receive affirmation about our contributions. So this year, I’d like to encourage you to write a note to those you care about—before it’s too late.

LIVE HAPPY By Shawn Achor & Michelle Gielan
DEALING WITH SECONDHAND STRESS
Over the past decade, we have learned how our brains are hardwired for emotional contagion. Emotions spread via a wireless network of mirror neurons, which are tiny parts of the brain that allow us to empathize with others and understand what they’re feeling. Your brain picks up the smiles, yawns and fatigue responses of someone sitting on the other side of the room. But it’s not just smiles and yawns that spread. We can pick up negativity, stress and uncertainty like secondhand smoke.
Observing someone who is stressed—especially a family member—can have an immediate effect upon our own nervous systems. Secondhand stress is much more contagious from a romantic partner than a stranger, but when observers watched a stressful event on video with strangers, 24% still showed a stress response. According to Heidi Hanna, “Most people have experienced spending time with someone who triggers a stress response just by walking in the door. This can be a conditioned response from previous interactions.” The cues that cause secondhand stress can be very subtle changes in the people around us— yet they can have huge impacts. (continued on pg. 44)

ANTIQUE ANSWERS Q: I collect Vogue dolls, and I wonder if there is a good reference book so I can establish values for the ones in my collection.
Take The Weekends Off And Let Us Do The Work! Rainfall Maintenance Services Weed Control Division
A: One of the better reference books is the “Collector’s Encyclopedia of Vogue Dolls,” by Judith Izen and Carol Stover, the expanded 2nd edition features 200 additional photos, with updated information and values. Also check out the Vogue Doll Company website at www. voguedolls.com.

Q: I have a print dated 1892 entitled “Columbus on His Return.” Although it has stains and several small tears, it is in fairly good condition. Does it have any value? A: Probably not very much. Even though your print is more than a century old and interesting, it remains a page from a newspaper that is of less than desirable quality. I would suspect it might be worth about $50.

HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson
TIP 1 Whip the whites of your eggs when you are working with heavy flours, like coconut and almond meal. The whipped whites will lighten cakes and muffins. TIP 2 If you have trouble holding your cat still to clip its claws, sneak up while it’s asleep. You might get only a couple done before your cat catches on and wriggles away. TIP 3 Have trouble opening jars? Keep a mousepad— those nifty computer desk pads— in your kitchen. The rubber side gives you a great grip on jars of all sizes. TIP 4 In the winter, keep your robe under the covers with you when you sleep. Pull it next to or over you a few minutes before you get up. It will be toasty and will help make the transition into the cold a little less harsh. WWW.THEGRANDSEASON.COM
SUN CITY PET MARKET
Offers High-Quality Goods
HI, MY NAME IS NINO AND I WAS A VERY SICK DOG. My mom, Ms. Edwards tried many things to make me better, but after thousands of dollars spent with many failed attempts with drugs, lotions, and shampoos, I was still very sick. I lost almost all of my hair with many sores over most of my body, and I also smelled very stinky. I had about as much energy as a stuffed animal. My Mom found a locally owned natural pet food store called Sun City Pet, and man I’ve got to tell you this is a great store with wonderful toys, collars, treats and really good food with none of it made in China. The owner has over 14 years of pet re-lated experience and has gone to many continuing pet education classes, and boy does he know a lot about pet nutrition. He knew exactly what it would take to make me the dog I am today. It was no easy task but after about one years time, look at me now! My coat is soft and beautiful and I have the energy of a mountain lion. I no longer have sores, with a perfect weight, and no more odor. I owe thanks to the fully trained staff at the store who were great to me. They helped transition me off of a very poor diet and onto a high quality natural dog food and veterinary grade supplements. They have a wide variety of high quality products, with a great selection of items all at reasonable prices. If you know of other Birds, Cats, or Dogs in need of some help, send them to Sun City Pet.

STAYING SAFE BEHIND THE WHEEL
AUTO TALK By Derrick Grant
As we age, it’s normal for driving abilities to change.
By reducing risk factors and incorporating safe driving practices, many can continue driving safely long into their senior years. It’s important to pay attention to any warning signs that age is interfering with our driving safety and make appropriate adjustments. Even if you find you need to reduce your driving or give up the keys, it doesn’t mean the end of your independence. Alternative methods of transportation can offer health and social benefits. Everyone ages differently, so there’s no arbitrary cutoff as to when someone should stop driving. Older adults, however, are more likely to receive traffic citations and get into accidents than younger drivers. In fact, fatal crash rates rise sharply after a driver has reached the age of 70. What causes this increase? As we age, factors such as decreased
vision, impaired hearing or slowed motor reflexes may become a problem. You may have a chronic condition that gradually worsens with time, or you may have to adjust to a sudden change, such as a stroke. Aging tends to result in a reduction of strength, coordination and flexibility, which can affect your ability to safely control a car. For example: • P ain or stiffness in your neck can make it harder to look over your shoulder to change lanes or look both ways at intersections to check for traffic. • Leg pain can make it difficult to move your foot from the gas to the brake pedal. • D iminished arm strength can make it hard to turn the steering wheel. • Reaction times slow down with age, so you may be slower to spot vehicles emerging from side streets or realize the vehicle ahead stopped. • Keeping track of road signs, signals, traffic and pedestrians can become more difficult as you lose the ability to manage multiple activities. You may have driven your entire life and take great pride in your safety record, but as you age, it’s critical to realize your driving ability can change. To stay safe, you need to get help when changes happen and be willing to listen if others voice concerns.

VETERANS POST
by Freddy Groves
Cabin in the Woods Maine aims to reduce the number of homeless veterans in the state to zero. A project to build 21 cabins in the Maine woods for homeless veterans received another push forward recently when state lawmakers approved nearly $400,000 in federal tax credits. The project is being spearheaded by the Volunteers of America and is pulling in support from all sectors. The cabins will be built on an 11-acre wooded section of the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (Togus) property under a 75-year lease.

The fully furnished ADA-approved cabins will be for both men and women, and the site would include a community center. For homeless veterans, many of whom deal with PTSD and substance abuse, a cabin in the quiet Maine woods, with medical assistance and support services nearby, could be the perfect vehicle for healing and eventual wellness.

A BETTER YOU By Laura Stack
SNOOZING YOUR WAY TO PERSONAL PRODUCTIVITY
How much sleep is right for you?
Do You Get Enough Sleep at Night? Think back to the last time you missed a significant amount of sleep. How did you feel the next day? Were you able to get your work done efficiently and professionally? Probably not. I’ll bet you felt tense, irritable, red-eyed, edgy and drowsy— in other words, TIRED. Insufficient sleep can also leave you moody, lethargic and unmotivated, damage your creativity and problem-solving skills and make it difficult for you to make decisions and deal with stress. The Gold Stanard The standard required-sleep estimate for working-age adults comes to eight hours—a decent compromise between the 7.5 - 9 hours most experts cite as ideal. And yet American workers get an average of only six hours and forty minutes of sleep per night. We know better, so why do we do it?
Sometimes You Have No Choice Something comes up that steals part of your sleep time, or your mind stubbornly refuses to shut down. Generally, though, when and how long we sleep remains up to us. Unfortunately, we sometimes look at our busy day and the big chunk sleep takes out of it, and we decide we can afford to cut back. The Perfect Sleep Don’t assume the classic eight-hour figure is set in stone. Some of us need less or more. About 3% of us possess a gene that lets us get by on six hours per night, and for a rare few three hours is enough. On the other hand, some people feel lousy if they sleep less than 12 hours—something almost impossible to achieve in today’s world. Caveat Emptor All this assumes, of course, you don’t suffer from a sleep disorder. If you require sleeping pills just to get to sleep or you can’t seem to get enough restorative sleep no matter what you do, then you should consult your doctor in attempt to identify and treat the disorder. STRANGE BUT TRUE Historians say that on April 4, 1968, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. participated in a pillow fight in the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. This wouldn’t be noteworthy, of course, except for the fact that he was assassinated at the motel that same evening. Those who study such things say that men without beards are 40 percent more likely to describe themselves as happy. Before horseradish was called horseradish, it was known as “stingnose” in many areas. Odder still is that it was sometimes rubbed on a person’s forehead to relieve a headache. You might not think of tarantulas as fragile, but they are. Despite their soft, furry appearance, if one of these spiders has even a short fall without catching itself on its thread, the drop likely will shatter its exoskeleton or rupture its abdomen. If you ever have the good fortune to encounter a group of bunnies, you’ll know that you can collectively call them a “fluffle.”

PUTTS AND PARS By Barry Goldstein
FOUR TRICKS TO BECOME A BETTER PLAYER
Quick and easy tips to play better golf right now
TRICK 1: Align the Clubface The correct way to align your shots is to always begin by first assessing your target from behind the ball. This will give you a perspective of the entire hole and help you aim where you want the ball to go. Secondly, before you make your actual stance, set the clubface behind the golf ball and align it directly at the target. Do this before, not after, you get into your stance After you have the right clubface alignment, then comes time to situate the rest of your body. Keep your body aiming left of the target line, and experiment with what works best for you—make sure to align that clubface first. TRICK 2: Choose the Right Club Selecting the right club includes things like natural shot tendencies, wind, hazards and whether or not hidden dangers lurk in prime landing areas. A better player looks at what approach shot is to follow.

TRICK 3: Don’t Change Your Stance Maintaining a consistent stance is critical to becoming a better ballstriker. That’s not to say there aren’t minor adjustments in spine angle, ball position and stance width, but generally, how you stand over an iron should not be far off from how you situate yourself with a driver. TRICK 4: Make a Good Grip Better players always have a solid grip. To start, grip the club with your gloved hand and emphasize the handle’s placement in the fingers between the first knuckle and the palm. Then, apply the ungloved hand so it wraps comfortably around the handle. From there, the thumb and index fingers of both hands form two Vs, both of which should be pointed somewhere around the right side of your chest or right shoulder.

QUICK CLEANING TIPS
MR. CLEAN
Now that the holiday clutter has been put away, try using a few of these helpful tips may help you every day.
Cleaning your home is a chore you know all too well, but these tips can help you clean spaces easily ignored. Disinfect the Disposal: To get rid of odors, drop in a cut-up lemon, some salt and a few ice cubes. The lemon deodorizes, and the ice and salt clean away residue. Zap the Sponge: Sponges can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Disinfect yours every night by squeezing it out and microwaving it on high for a minute.
Make Doors Shine: Rubbing a teaspoon of lemon oil on glass shower doors twice a month causes water to bead up and roll off. Or, try Rain-X Original Glass Treatment, a car-care product made to keep rainwater off your windshield. Use it twice a year. Tame the Toilet: Drop a teaspoon of Tang Drink Mix in the bowl. The citric acid acts like a scrubber—and it’s nontoxic, in case the dog takes a sip. Let it sit for a few minutes, then swish and flush. Keep Static Away: Since fabric softener and dryer sheets can strip towels of their absorbency, add ¼ cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle or throw two (new, clean) tennis balls in your dryer to get rid of static electricity, soften fabrics and eliminate the need for dryer sheets.

FAMILY FUN
THE UPSIDE OF AGE
Grandparenting is one of the best perks from being a parent.
As grandparents we all want to make the most of the precious family time we get with our grandchildren. You can create deep, loving relationships by sharing the things you love and learning what excites them. Whether you’re a full-time grandparent, step-grandparent or long-distance grandparent, you can find new ways to strengthen ties and provide meaningful memories and valuable life lessons.
• S ee the world in a new way through younger eyes. • Provide expanded support and encouragement to their grandchildren. • Use their breadth of experience to avoid the pitfalls they may have encountered as parents the first time around. • Watch children grow through all stages of life. • Learn about their grandkids’ music and passions. • P rovide input that parents cannot.
Grandparenting is an opportunity to play, to love someone new, to appreciate the magic of a developing mind and to be needed again.
Usually, grandparents have the benefit of interacting on a level that is once removed from the day-to-day responsibilities of parents. This can make it easier to develop a close bond. Grandparenting can provide continuity in a child’s life. Grandparents are often the family historians and can add a rich sense of family tradition. Contact with grandparents can also teach children positive attitudes towards aging and help them develop skills to enhance their own lifelong learning.
Grandparents can: • Share the things they’re passionate about with a new audience. • Experience games, music, nature, reading and other interests alongside a curious young mind.
Becoming a grandparent at a young age can also make some people feel prematurely old. And just like parents, they sometimes have to deal with colicky babies and moody teenagers. Nevertheless, for most, the benefits still far outweigh the drawbacks.

A Walk in the Woods (R) With a successful career, loving wife and years of experiences, writer Bill Bryson (Robert Redford) still feels lost, and gets a yearning for adventure. He’s going to hike all 2,200 miles of the Appalachian Trail, with his crazy old pal, Katz (Nick Nolte). The two grouch and bicker their way through majestic slopes with vague hopes of a meaningful journey. The Perfect Guy (PG-13) In this steamy thriller, we learn that finding a loyal, strong, protective and loving guy can be a bad thing if he’s also wide-eyed crazy. Not long after Leah (Sanaa Lathan) breaks up with her beau Dave (Morris Chestnut), she’s romantically rescued by the dashing Carter (Michael Ealy), who is quite possibly the perfect man. His perfection has a gaping flaw, however, and his fits of jealousy soon turn violent. WWW.THEGRANDSEASON.COM

LIVE HAPPY (continued from pg. 8)
Smile More Instead of responding to stressed nonverbals with an equally stressed grimace of your own, return it with a smile or a nod of understanding. Suddenly you have the power.
DEALING WITH SECONDHAND STRESS
In fact, you don’t have to see or hear someone to pick up their stress; you can also smell it. Research shows that stress causes people to sweat special stress hormones, which are picked up by the olfactory senses of others. In such a highly connected world, we need to find ways to improve our emotional immune system. Otherwise, we risk the negative effects of second hand stress. Here are three helpful tips to keep in mind as you resist adoping other people’s stress. Be Calm and Carry On We found that if you create a positive mindset about stress and stop fighting it, you experience a 23% drop in the negative effects of stress. When we see stress as a threat, our bodies and minds miss out on the enhancing effects of stress.
Be Confident One of the greatest buffers against picking up others’ stress is stable and strong self-esteem. The higher your self-esteem, the more likely you will feel that you can deal with whatever situation you face. Exercise is one of the best ways to build self-esteem, because your brain records a victory every time you exercise. Nowadays, we avoid smoking lounges and we wash our hands, but in the future, we may realize the key to health and happiness is improving our emotional immune system to protect ourselves from others’ stress. And of course, it’s not just other people’s stress that matters—our own mindset affects the happiness of those around us. A positive mindset can improve our own lives, and the lives of everyone around us. For more tips on how to live a happier life visit: www.goodthinkinc.com

DOLLARS & SENSE
FINANCIAL AGILITY IMPROVES WITH AGE When it comes to retirement, practice makes perfect.
Retirees are better at controlling spending, feel more financially secure and find creative ways to cut expenses without giving up activities they enjoy, according to a study sponsored by MassMutual. According to Elaine Sarsynski, of MassMutual Retirement Services, “Satisfaction with life in retirement actually increases, indicating a high degree of adapta-bility by most retirees. Retirees typically rely more on Social Security and qualified savings like IRAs and pensions.”
Retirees say their ability to manage expenses improves the longer they are retired. “Retirees adapt to living on a fixed income by finding creative ways to cut expenses without forgoing activities they enjoy,” says Mathew Greenwald. “Some take part-time jobs at theaters or with orchestra groups in order to get free tickets. Many also seek out cheaper activities, such as senior center events or community theaters.” Sources of income shift for retirees the longer they are retired and few retirees report actually working as they get older. Many retirees defer taking Social Security income until 10-15 years into retirement. To realistically project expenses before retirement: 1. Connect with retirees to better understand their lifestyles.
Of the study respondents who retired 11-15 years ago, 83 percent say they feel financially secure and 62 percent say they are “very satisfied” with their lifestyle. However, 77 percent of respondents who retired fewer than five years ago say they feel financially secure and 56 percent say they are “very satisfied” with their lifestyle.
2. Track all purchases, especially on vacation, to better understand the cost of the activities you enjoy. 3. Look for ways to participate in activities you enjoy at lower costs, such as taking in local community theater in lieu of professionally produced shows. 4. Reconnect with your spouse, children and friends to help bolster your social networks.

LOOKING FOR LOVE
FOUR DATING TIPS
A guide to finding love again
Here’s the dating dilemma: The society we live in tells people of a certain age that their best opportunities for love and romance have come and gone. Deep down, you know it’s not too late— never too late—to find love. This is the “timeless you,” who experiences a tingle of excitement at the thought of new romantic possibilities. To help you navigate the most common senior single dating pitfalls, here are a few helpful tips to keep in mind. (Don’t) Act Your Age After spending a lifetime learning to be “serious” and “responsible,” it can be hard to remember the cardinal rule of dating: Have fun! While many dating rules have changed, laughter, spontaneity and a healthy appetite for fun are still highly attractive.
Be Here, Now. If you are dating again for the first time in years, you’ve probably overcome painful obstacles to arrive at this decision. Perhaps you’ve survived the death of a spouse, or maybe a divorce that tested your sense of self and ability to trust. Don’t let your past dominate the conversation. Leave Your Kids at Home Your children are adults now and have had homes of their own for years. But they can still tag along on your date, if you take their opinions too much to heart. Listen to your kids concerns—but live your own life. View Each Date as a Fresh Start Resist the temptation to compare each new person with past partners. Dating is not about filling someone’s empty shoes or avoiding a repeat of past hurts. It is about starting over entirely and finding new things to love about another unique person. Love is exciting and meaningful at any age. So have fun, be present, be free—and follow your heart where it leads. For more great dating tips, visit eharmony.com.

Arizona’s hot summers and monsoons can cause major damage to your roofs exterior and underlayment. Don’t wait until you have a leak, call Sun City Roofing to inspect your homes roof today! Winter residents should have their roof checked to help prevent costly repairs.
How old is your roof?
Your roof is one of the most important components of your home. If your roof is over 10 years old, if it has multiple layers or missing shingles or tiles, if there is physical damage, or if you have leaks it’s time to call Sun City Roofing.

Smart budget travel tips for that dream vacation
Dream vacations come in all shapes and sizes. For some, it may be visiting every ballpark nationwide. For others, it’s island hopping in the Caribbean. Yet nearly threequarters of Americans haven’t taken their dream vacation because they think it’s too expensive, according to a recent Bank of America survey. Dream vacations, however, don’t have to be out of reach. Travel Expert and Food Network Host Ted Allen has teamed with Bank of America to provide these smart budget travel tips: Monitor airfare and hotel rates a few months out to potentially save hundreds of dollars on last-minute
price surges. Travel during off-peak times to stretch your budget and avoid crowds. Use a credit card that rewards you for purchases made throughout the year. “My BankAmericard Travel Rewards credit card earns an unlimited 1.5 points per dollar on all purchases, and since my points don’t expire I can save them up to offset future travel expenses,” says Allen. “And it’s great when I travel overseas because there are no foreign transaction fees.” Establish a personal connection with travel representatives who can help open doors for hidden upgrades and deals. For example, with one phone call you may be able to check a bag for free. Don’t defer your dream vacation forever. These simple tips can help make your dream a reality. AGING WELL
STAYING HEALTHY AS YOU AGE
How to feel young and live life to the fullest
As we grow older, we experience an increasing number of major life changes. How we handle and grow from these changes is the key to staying healthy. Coping with change is difficult, no matter how old you are. The particular challenge for adults over 50 is the sheer number of changes and transitions that start to occur— including children moving away, the loss of parents, friends and other loved ones, changes to or the end of your career, declining health and even loss of independence. Healthy aging means continually reinventing yourself as you age. It means finding new things you enjoy, learning to adapt to change, staying physically and socially active. Unfortunately, for many, aging brings anxiety and fear instead. Many of the fears stem from myths about aging that are exaggerated by the media. The truth is that you are stronger and more resilient than you may think.
MYTH: Aging means declining health or disability. FACT: Some diseases become more common as we age but getting older does not automatically mean poor health or that you’ll be confined to a walker or wheelchair. Plenty of older adults enjoy vigorous health, often better than many younger people. MYTH: Memory loss is an inevitable part of aging. FACT: As you age, you may eventually notice you don’t remember things as easily as in the past, or memories may start to take a little longer to retrieve. Brain training and new learning can occur at any age. There are many things you can do to keep your memory sharp. MYTH: You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. FACT: One of the more damaging myths of aging is that after a certain age, you just won’t be able to try anything new or contribute things anymore. The opposite is true. Middle aged and older adults are just as capable of learning new things and thriving in new environments, plus they have the wisdom that comes with life experience. If you have confidence in yourself, you’re fostering a positive environment for change at any age.

Physical: Do something that improves your physical health. Instead of watching TV for two hours turn it off and go for a 20-minute walk. Emotional: Spend your emotional energy wisely. Surround yourself with people who will uplift and inspire you—not deplete and depress you. Mental: The mind is like a muscle and needs exercise. Think about learning one new thing each day—it doesn’t matter how big or small. Learn a new habit, a new skill, or watch a YouTube video on something you’ve always been curious about. Spiritual: Clear your life of negative clutter, and spend time being thankful. Practice gratitude daily. Pick out the things in your life that you are grateful for— especially those things you would normally take for granted. The most effective prayer in the world has two words: “Thank you.” Relational: Reach out to someone who has impacted your life daily. It costs nothing to pick up the phone, or write a note to those you care about. Remember, we need other people, just as other people need us. The New Year brings renewed hope, and the chance to begin again. So why not make this the year you resolve to be a part of the change you would like to see in the world? YOUR HEALTH
FOUR MYTHS ABOUT GRIEF AND LOSS
Understanding the process of losing someone you love
Losing someone or something you love is very painful. You may experience all kinds of difficult emotions and it may feel like the pain and sadness will never let up. These are normal reactions to a significant loss. But while there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there are healthy ways to cope with the pain that, in time, can help you move on. What Is Grief? It’s a natural response to loss. It’s the emotional suffering you feel when something or someone you love is taken away. The more significant the loss, the more intense the grief will be. You may associate grief with the death of a loved one—which is often the cause of the most intense type of grief—but any loss can cause grief, including: • Divorce or relationship breakup • Losing a job • Loss of health • Retirement • Death of a spouse • Death of a child • Death of a pet • Loss of financial stability
Myths About Grief Whatever your grief experience, it’s important to be patient with yourself and allow the process to naturally unfold. MYTH: The pain will go away faster if you ignore it. FACT: Trying to ignore your pain or keep it from surfacing will only make it worse. For real healing it’s necessary to face your grief and actively deal with it. MYTH: You must “be strong” in the face of loss. FACT: Feeling sad, frightened or lonely is a normal reaction to loss. Crying doesn’t mean you’re weak. You don’t need to “protect” your family or friends with a brave front. Showing your true feelings helps. MYTH: If you don’t cry, it means you aren’t sorry about the loss. FACT: Crying is a normal response to sadness, but it’s not the only one. Those who don’t cry may feel the pain just as deeply as others. They may simply have other ways of showing it. MYTH: Grief should last about a year. FACT: There’s no right or wrong time frame for grieving. It differs from person to person. To learn more, visit www.griefloss.org

IS THERE A ROBOT IN YOUR FUTURE?
The National Institutes of Health is about to develop robots to improve our quality of life.
The future is coming! The NIH has announced it plans to spend $2.2 million on three versions of a robot that they are working to develop. • A social companion for children to promote curiosity. • A n assistant for the visually impaired to help with identifying and grasping objects.
The purpose of the smart robots is to keep individuals with specific limitations physically active. Catch a Glimpse To see the prototype, visit www.nibib.nih.gov, click on News & Events and scroll to “NIH funds development of robots to improve health, quality of life.” The user would actually stand in the robot, with four sturdy legs on all sides keeping balance, and choose the level of assistance. This model uses a computer camera to scan the environment and navigate obstacles while sensing the user’s motions. The walk-along mule would be good for keeping balance while also letting the robot carry a load, perhaps a basket of laundry. Many questions have been asked since the programs announcement:
• A n assisted-mobility device for seniors. The senior’s version will be a dual-mode robotic Smart Walker to help keep us moving without the assistance of others and without the need for home remodeling or installing ramps for wheelchairs. It will have two abilities: a power-assisted Smart Walker and a Smart Mule that will walk alongside.

How much will this gadget weigh? Will it fold up and fit in the car? How easily will it assemble? Will it go over curbs?

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

Helping Seniors and Their Families Find Living Care Options AAA Senior Placement Resources Compassionately Helps Those Making Hard Care Decisions By providing seniors and their families with personalized care and an incredible network of resources to identify the right level of assistance for each stage of a senior’s life. AAA helps families find the right care for their loved ones. AAA Senior Placement Resources is a family-owned and operated business in Surprise. AAA specializes in helping the senior community and their families navigate the challenges individuals face as they find the need to transition from independent living to identifying which type of assisted living will best meet their specific needs. Sue Royer, the owner of AAA Senior Placement Resources, sees her passion for assisting the senior community directly connected to her experience as a child. Sue says, “When I was a child I had the responsibility of caring for my 17 siblings. While I complained to my parents, who were too busy themselves, to give me a break. Little did I know that all those experiences with my family would shape my life’s work.” Since AAA Senior Placement Resources is a familyrun business, they are able to maintain their integrity by closely monitoring all of their seniors’ needs. Working with family members allows Sue to know each client is receiving excellent service as well as the highest standard of care. Sue says, “We are a great team and are truly thankful for our client’s trust.” Sue recalls, “Often, when I first meet a client, the look of sadness and despair is evident on their face. Through the process, we are blessed to bond over tears, laughter and empathy.” FOR ADVERTISING INFORMATION CALL (623) 594-1630
Sue continues, “Sometimes families are unaware of the options available to them and their loved ones. As I walk them through the many options available, a wonderful transformation takes place. It’s almost like our clients feel a heavy weight has been lifted from their shoulders.” Sue says, “We have had so many wonderful experiences through the years with our clients. Some have gone through rehabilitation and have been able to return to their homes, while others haven’t returned home because of the level of care needed. But we’ve be able to help settle them in to a safe and loving environment with 24 hour care to meet their needs— bringing peace to their families and loved ones. Sue says with a smile, “As a resource center for seniors, we have had requests for all kinds of needs, but my favorite is when a bright eyed cowboy walked into my office with a great smile. I was thinking he must have a loved one in need of our help. I asked what we could do for him. He explained how his home was paid off, and he had a good monthly income and all his teeth, and said all he needed was a woman to move in with him a share the rest of our lives together. Unfortunately, I had to tell him that kind of matchmaking wasn’t a service we offered.” Continued on page 64

The Grand Season Business Profile
Give Your Favorite Clothes a New Lease on Life Leslie’s Alterations Can Professionally Make Things Fit Just Right Again Looking for a local business that specializes in tailoring your favorite clothing? Look no further than Leslie’s Alterations to help make your outfit just right. It’s that time of the year! You need the perfect outfit, for the perfect occasion, but you have no idea what to wear. Chances are you have several fabulous options in the back of your closet you haven’t worn in years because they don’t fit just “right.” You know the reality of wearing your favorite skirt or shirt is slim, but it remains in your closet because it’s a reminder of a special event in your life. Do yourself a favor this year and pull that skirt, dress or suit out of the closet and take it to Leslie’s Alterations. Allow their professional tailors to customize that cherished outfit into something you’ll wear to your next event, rather than something you reminisce over. Leslie’s Alterations has been serving men and women in the West Valley for more than 18 years. Their qualified team of tailors can work with all fabrics—but they specialize in leather care, wedding attire, ballroom gowns and suits. They can also provide customized service for furs that may need special attentions. Leslie’s Alterations is owned by the Meyer family, and is a business close to Melissa Meyer’s heart. As a sewing enthusiast herself, when the original owners of Leslie’s fell ill and needed to sell the business, Melissa knew it was a business she could help build and grow. Walking into Leslie’s Alterations, you feel like you’ve dropped by an old friends home for a cup of coffee. Their warm and friendly team is committed to quality service and excellent craftsmanship. Whether you need a dress taken in, a pair of pants hemmed or the cuffs on your shirt need to be adjusted, the team at Leslie’s will make the changes without missing a beat. Additionally, they can rush your order for a minimal charge if for some reason you thought an outfit would look great—but in reality it needs a little nip and tuck to fit perfectly.

One of the most amazing services Leslie’s provides is altering bras’s for women undergoing or recovering from treatment for breast cancer. As you can imagine, getting adjusted to a new frame is hard enough without having to go searching for a bra to fit your new body. Leslie’s also takes pride in taking care of dress uniforms for those who serve our country and our community—meaning alterations and changes to all military, police and firefighter uniforms are done for a special rate. Additionally, Leslie’s Alterations provides customized fitting areas to accommodate customers who may have special needs, or may require a wheelchair or motorized device to get around. This year, instead of passing by the perfect outfit because it’s the wrong size, make it your goal to spend your valuable time and money at Leslie’s Alterations to make those items fit perfectly, rather than wander around the mall looking for something that will just do. Visit Leslie’s Alterations in the Sun Dome Plaza in Sun City West, open Monday-Friday from 8:00 am 4:00 pm and on Saturdays from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm. QUOTES & NOTES The New Year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. We can help write that story by setting goals. —Melody Beattie, Author I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something. —Neil Gaiman, British Author All of us every single year, we’re a different person. I don’t think we’re the same person all our lives. —Steven Spielberg, Director There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age. —Sophia Loren, Italian Actress For more inspiration, visit www.brainyquote.com
